My understanding was that the old fella who owned all that land including the land behind the townhouses was left to the afl/vfl on the proviso that it was used for football. Hence keeping one stand and the ground for training for Hawthorn, which is how they got around it. Rest was sold to developers. It was a great venue for football and cricket. Packer's World Series Cricket first season started there. The bullshit they touted about druggies breaking in and shooting up in the rooms was all BS, they used this as pressure to seal the deal. Poor old bloke will be turning in his grave. Have a great break Bucky and look forward to your content next year.

Great memories and some bad ones. None more than 1986 when I first watched my school (Melbourne High) went down to Xavier in the dying moments of the Herald Shield Grand Final to only then see Hawthorn beat us in the Night Grand Final. We played some great finals against the Hawks in the 80’s and of course the famous straight sets exit against the Cats in 1994. But my all time favourite is Rd 1 v Richmond in 1981. Playing the reigning Premierships (Richmond) with the introduction of Peter Bosustow and Kenny Hunter. That was the day I became fanatical.

Bucky that was fukn fantastic being a fellow old bastard born 1967 😅, many many fond memories of VFL park young & old many of which you showed in this tribute video none more than in 1999 my wife and I took our then 3 year old son for his very 1st game of footy Craig Bradly’s 300th game to watch our Blues win it’s always been the most sentimental game & favourite memory because it was a special occasion for me & an iconic game in Carlton’s history aswell , thank you mate for this video keep up the great work cheers Bucky, Muzz 💙

Brought back a lot of great memories. I used to be 1 of the black bombers escorting the umps on and off the ground in the final 2 years. Was great watching games from the grass. Escorting my fav player Braddles off on his 300th game was a buzz. They packed in about close to 95k people in the 93 Fosters cup GF and lied that they had 75k odd as that was their OHS limit. Coming from the ground manager Graeme. Great days 😢 Can see you were a very skillful player Bucks, very balanced and effortless.

Braddles 300th was a Waverley right?
I remember that game against the Hawks (I think).
We had a pretty good team then even though Sticks, Diesel and Madden had retired.
Lance, Hammil, Kouta, Ratts, McKay, SOS, Sexton, Campo, Allen etc made us fairly competitive.
Braddles was running almost half marathons even towards the end of his career.
If you include his games in Adelaide Braddles played 500+ games at first class state level.
The best Carlton player I saw play was Doull and it was Braddles who broke his games record of about 350 games.
Gee, Princes Park was blessed with great players over many decades.
      Cheers

@@PetraKann yeah, it was Rd 14 1999 out at VFL Park. He had 26 touches & kicked a goal. It was when Hawthorn & St Kilda were co-tenants at Waverley.

    • @PetraKann
      @PetraKann День тому +2

I went out to waverley many times to see the Blues (and Fitzroy as well) - hated to trip out there and getting home.
Saw some classic games. Sticks sinking the Kangaroos after the siren in 1987. Warren Ralph’s first game at full forward when he kicked 9 goals (Hunter also kicked a bag in the same game).
The final against the Hawks in 1987 when we won by a couple of goals to give us the week’s rest).
Saw Conlan sink the Bombers in the wet with a goal in the dying seconds.
The angriest i think I’ve been at a game of football was seeing Billy Duckworth put his knees into Hunter’s back he took a mark in the goal square.
Saw Buzza’s ridiculous goal against the Cats in 1981 but I was on the other side of the ground.
Great memories make up for the pain of getting to the ground and overall poor atmosphere at the ground. You needed 60k plus to generate enough noise. Fans were further away from the play I felt.
I understand that the long term plan for VFL park was a 2nd tier going around the ground which would have taken the ground’s capacity to over 160,000.
