      Yeah he did. We have a video of him talking about his early days training with Ip Man on this channel. I think it's titled something like ' CST early training days with Ip man'.
      Apart from his exercises (swimming and hiking) he trained around 7 hours a day and in the beginning that consisted mostly of Siu Nim Tao.

    This was just incredible. Thank you for this priceless teaching. The only problem is now I am really confused, I just got to a stage of learning or understanding the important value of not being on autopilot and mindless, that one needs to be mindful and move the body first using intention directed by the mind to move the body. All my recent internal teachings, from teachers of Xingyiquan, Taiji, and I could swear, (correct me if I’m wrong) also by videos made by you, Sifu Nima, have said this. I understand that One should lead with intention and mindfulness, but what GM Chu says in this video seems to completely contradict that practice and method and instead work to achieve automation as opposed to focused attention.

    • @wingchun-simplekungfu7584
      @wingchun-simplekungfu7584 2 роки тому +2

      This is a fantastic video. Although our grand master was considered the “king” of this form , Nima has a fantastic understanding after spending many years training with CST in Hong Kong . Don’t allow yourself to be discouraged by any confusion. It’s part of the learning process. We may never reach the same level as he did but don’t let that stop you from this journey. Only those who believe they have mastered this can demonstrate their ignorance and lack of understanding

    • @MindfulWingChun
      @MindfulWingChun  2 роки тому +9

      So there are different levels of the practice. To get to highest level (Nim Lik) it means you have done SNT correctly and mindfully so many times that there is a holistic intention for every movement. For example, at first the level of mindfulness in a Tan sau is the practitioner feeling the spine, and perhaps feeling relaxation of the shoulder joint, and then controlling the joint to move the elbow while ensuring the wrist is traveling in a straight line etc.
      At the highest level, the arm doesn't feel separate to the body, the whole process is one of a holistic one, almost as if there is no arm. CST used that phrase a lot in his final years of teaching "forget your arms and legs" which is so contradictory to everything he taught us prior to that like releasing the muscles, feeling and controlling the joints etc.
      Simply stated the level of the 'mindful' state becomes holistic and all encompassing instead of micro Managing every movement. there for each movement simply happens with the lightest (and whole body encompassing) intention.
      As Rob said try not to get frustrated or discouraged when feeling confused. Just go back to the drawing board and keep things very simple. These levels are truly understood once experienced. 👍
      You're on the online school right? if so just try and stick to the sequence of ideas to work on the way presented on the program, that way you are sure to build the right foundations and not rush into a level that you're not ready for which would be detrimental to your progress.

      What the Master is speaking about here is not mindfulness or intention as these are active states of consciousness. He is directing you towards something else completely which moves on its own without intention or consciousness. This is why he says, phase 1 learn the precise movement, phase 2 let your body move itself into each position and phase 3, let the Body's Life-Force (Chi) direct and move the Body into position without any conscious control or intention. Listen carefully to what he says, "something inside me inflates my arm." This is why Wing Tsun is so hard to teach because there are no words adequate enough in any language to accurately describe this. And this is also why you have to train with a Master because when he touches you, your Body, subconsciously will access this pathway, and it will feel very strange to you when it first happens. When the pathway opens inside you the Master will both sense and feel it when he looks and touches you. And he will probably say, "there it is" and you will probably break away from the unconscious pathway back into consciousness by trying to think, analyze and understand what it was that the Master sensed and felt awakening inside of you. And so the door will close to you and you will have to start all over again. The key is not to be mindful or set an intention. Just be respectful, patient, natural with No form of conscious mind which will interfere....and when you are not looking for it, suddenly it will appear. Read the book, Sword of No Sword by Yamaoka Tesshu, Poet, Calligrapher, sword-master and Zen Master, considered Japans greatest swordsman....

    I moved away from Wing Chun long time ago and practice Kickboxing, now I am a full on BJJ practitioner, however, ironically the only thing I practice from Wing Chun, still to this day, is the Sil Lum Tao Form. I remember my friends at the time telling me when I felt disillusioned with Wing Chun 'Whatever art your gonna do mate, keep practicing SLT'.
    I did it on and off, then recently I have been 'reverse engineering' my Wing Chun while I spar and grapple, and I restarted practicing the SLT form the way Susana Ho and CST taught me and I must say I appreciate it allot more now, it is a VERY powerful form, it has healed my injuries, its meditative and clears my mind, I am very aware of what he was saying in this video as that was hammered into my head at the time I was training with him. We can do certain movements mechanically till cow reaches home or let movement arise when connecting with felt-sense of tension or whatever--most people do not have the patience for it and would rather imitate movements that ought to come before thought. I heard John Kaufman saying (interview with Joey Only) CST would patiently do Sim Nim Tao and find that joyful space even when initially he got hit often in fighting but he kept at it trusting that process to bear fruit at its own pace. Only if you have the footwork required in modern martial art. If you can't close the distance and if you can't avoid being kicked by Muay Thai or taken down by BJJ, nothing matters.

      yes of course. this is just to cultivate the state. If things like footwork, range, timing, conditioning etc. arent practiced then its just a mental and physical health tool

      @@MindfulWingChun Thank you for your reply. You might have already done some research on the history of Wing Chun. But here is an additional piece of information that you may find helpful. Wing Chun was first introduced to the Red Boat people, a group of people who performed Cantonese Opera along the Pearl River. Wing Chun was first brought to Guangdong by a guy from Hubei called Tan Sau Ng. Tan Sau was his signature and his last name was Ng. He was a fugitive who was wanted by the Manchurian government because he was involved in some triad activities trying to overthrow the Manchurian government in Hubei. Yes, triad. In the very old days, triads were not criminals, but a bunch of people organized to act against the government. Tan Sau Ng was working in a Chinese Opera, which is different from Cantonese Operas, before becoming a fugitive. Chinese Operas are more correctly called Capital Operas because they were originally performed in Beijing which was called Peking at that time. These operas were performed in a language that is a hybrid of Mandarin and Manchurian which is called 京腔, the capital singing style. Why would people from Hubei be performing in Chinese Opera? It was because Hubeinese have been known to be short but stocky. They were selected to do the fighting scenes in these operas. In case you haven't seen it, here is a link ua-cam.com/video/Kqim7q05ZdI/v-deo.html . The first Olympics gold medal in men's floor gymnastics for China was won by a guy from Hubei who was selected from a Chinese opera school in China. That guy was called the king of summersault. For these Hubei Chinese opera people, footwork is nothing. And the people of Hung Sun, the Red Boats, did not need this kind of footwork cause they were merely fighting on boats most of the time. Footwork is the most important thing in any fighting style. I hope you can invent some good footwork for Wing Chun that allows it to prevail as a real modern fighting style. My father was originally from Hubei who went to Hong Kong before the civil war and that's why I am interested in Wing Chun and its history. You have a good day.

      He was invited to go to Australia by a group of doctors to get extensive testing done on him in a lab so to find out which part of the brain was firing, whether they could find anything special in the tissues when he applied this force etc. Unfortunately this didn't happen cause when he was diagnosed with cancer he was asked not to take any longs flights

    First of all how come we do not see his whole Body? What is he doing with his feet for the opening and the close? are his knees bent? is he sitting? His Hume Sau...how is he going to trap a 200 LB man without moving his arms , not just the wrist, to make a circle and trap? A mans arm is 3 inches thick.
    His Tan sau..the mirror hand does not come up to his eyebrow level, if he is fighting a tall man with reach, he will get punched in face.
    And bad Tan Sau habit will ruin his Gong Sau and Quan Sau blocks(because the top half of both of those 2 arm blocks is a Tan sau, )
    Proper Wing Chun is in the details. When he gets to the Mook Jong form , his hands won't line up with the upper arms of the dummy.
    This is what happened to Bruce Lee, Yip Man did not trust him. So he got lazy in the details, when teaching, essentially a bad modified version. (Not Mans fault , Lee was a bully in Hong Kong)
    Lee was so locked in, he figured it out.
    It wasn't until he spent time with Dai Si Hing William Cheung, that he was taught proper Traditional Wing Chun. Lee was a ALL about the details. "
    Be like water, my friend!"

      there are so many videos of CST doing SNT. UA-cam search 'CST SNT compilation' for visible details.
      William Cheung was actually taught his SNT form and basics by CST as he mentions in one of his interviews on UA-cam. As was Derek Fung and most of the people who started with Ip Man in the first half of the 50s.

      @@MindfulWingChun I was taught by a Master that learned TWC Under Cheung, but also was training Golden Gloves Boxers, in NYC, and he was a 9th Dan black Belt in Goju Ryu Karate, before he met Cheung. He Added some Chi-Na, because (and so did Cheung its in a few videos) you need to deal with someone grabbing you.
      But as far as the SIL Lim Tao , Every movement HAD to be explained. from your toe to not bobbing your head. The whole system was based on FOOTWORK, that they don't teach anymore. That's why many think Wing Chun does not work anymore...they are just ignorant. or they were trained wrong. Most were trained wrong.

      @@ianweir2115 You literally said "His Hume Sau...how is he going to trap a 200 LB man without moving his arms, not just the wrist, to make a circle and trap. A mans arm is 3 inches thick. "
      That is a stupid thing to say because you are implying that he would move like this in a fight. I'm saying that this thinking is idiotic because you dont move like this is a fight. SNT develops a quality of internal force that does not matter about positioning. CST said many times that low level practitioners believe for example that bong sau should be done at a certain height or tan sau should be done at a certain position. These things don't matter. What matters is that you can generate force with your movement in an effortless way and overcome your opponents resistance.
      Every opponent has a different body so how can you think that there is only one correct way to do a huen sau? This kind of thinking is stupid....hence, my comment.
