Ted Williams didn’t identify as Latino, but it’s worth noting that his mother was Mexican. Her family originally hailed from Chihuahua. _Ted Williams: First Latino in the Baseball Hall of Fame_ is a book on his Latino heritage for anyone interested.

What a great find on UA-cam. Born in 1953 and lifelong Cardinals fan with baseball memories that being in 1960 I remember all the MLB players on the all-star game rosters. Now I play them in my Baseball strat-o-matic game as I have all the contender teams from the 1960s. This was during the period of 1963 through 1967 when I was really in to Topps bubble gum pack baseball card collecting and knew the starters of all the teams. Some like Cepeda did short stints with the Cardinals but Julian Javier was the long time Cardinals second baseman through my elementary and high scool years. Thanks for placing on UA-cam. I love reading baseball history of what I missed.

You imply it was racism that prevented Orlando Cepeda from receiving his Hall-of Fame honor for so long. Not long after his playing career, he was arrested on drug charges and spent time in prison. The Hall-of-Fame has a "morals clause" in their rules, the same one that today keeps out players like Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens as well as eliminating Rafael Palmeiro who exceeded both 3000 hits and 500 homers - typically "automatic" for entry to the Hall. Whether you think these are valid reasons for omission, the clause exists and is cited by the nearly all-white BBWAA voters who select who enters the Hall.

I did a small 4th grade speech on this game and failed since my teacher, who claimed he was a baseball fan, claimed "this game was never played".

great video! Such an interesting topic, and very well paced! It would be really cool to see a Latino all star game now, especially as a way to grow the game and at the same time show the great talent in the majors. I guess the WBC has been a cool substitute in the past.

Felipe Alou also made history when he joined his brothers Matty and Jesus in the outfield for the San Francisco Giants, becoming the first, and to my knowledge only, brothers to man an entire outfield during a game. I have it on good authority that their brother Bob lobbied for a spot but a four man outfield was deemed too softballish by Yogi Berra, who didn't really have a say in the matter but he was hanging around that day so they decided to find out what he thought about the concept. Of course, by that point Bob had already been immortalized by Ricky Ricardo but since his royalty percentage remains a mystery it's hard to say for certain how he made out in the deal. 🤔

    My first two thoughts were:
    1) Where were the other two Alou brothers? :-(
    2) Where's Luis Tiant? Except he came up one year later, making a rookie splash in Cleveland with 10-4 / 2.83 ERA in 19 games, 16 of them starts.

Luis Tiant was one of the starting pitchers for the first baseball game I ever attended. The other starter was Nolan Ryan. Angels vs Red Sox at Anaheim on June 2nd, 1978. Tiant got the win.

You should try living in Las Vegas for a decade or two. It's like being in the movie Dark City. Implosion is a word that comes up a lot as things go down. The casino where I got married? Implosion! The cafe where I met my wife? Torn down to the foundation. The building where I worked for many years? Likewise torn down. The history of Las Vegas is one of constant erasure.

I’ll tell you what would be a really great idea: a video on the tri-corner game in the 1940s. In support of WWII the Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants all played a single game against each other, where one team would pitch, another hit, and the third sat for the inning. Such an interesting concept, and I don’t think anyone’s done a video on it
