The foothills Trail was an awesome hike, I would love to go back there again someday, especially around the Burroughs Ford area and the Chattooga river. Happy 45th!
Super embarrassing noob question, but here it goes. When you say something like "it's 2 pm and I have 7 1/2 miles left to go," how are you determining that? Are you constantly checking the map, identifying where you are (from surroundings or the shape/ curves of the trail?) and then measuring from there? Or did you make notes on the map before you left like "from here to here is 5 miles?"
That’s ok. There are several ways to know this. Sometimes the trails have mile marker posts, or signs at some intersections with the mileage to the next trailhead or campsite. Another way that I know is by carrying a paper map, which will often show mileage of campsites and trailheads and I always know where I’m at because of the GPS app and watch I use so I always know exactly how many miles I’ve gone and where I am at on the trail.
Awesome - we look forward to having you! We were trying to do the Foothills in January, but it was just too cold and rainy and now our hostel is open. Can’t believe all the blow downs you had! What a pain. - Chica

Hi Jason! We are looking at doing this trail in mid May this year. Any advice, tips, or suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
When I was researching the trail I could not decide on which end to start at: table rock is a much more difficult start and much more scenic that would make for an easier finish. The last 15 miles to Oconee are very boring and mostly flat but just before that is the Chattooga river and Burroughs Ford campground which are absolutely amazing! I would just suggest researching the foothills Trail Facebook page because there is a wealth of information on there and any question you have will get answered quickly. Make sure you have Some sort of GPS device and even one of the little pocket maps which will show many of the details for water and campsites. Hope this helps!
@@jasonwish- Thank you! We were debating which direction to go and were thinking we would start at Tablerock to get the hard stuff over first!! We will definitely checkout the FB page. Thanks so much!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Its a pretty amazing trail, and should be on everyone's list that lives in the East if you like rivers and waterfalls! Thanks Andy and Kevin!

Great choice for a hike. Adding it to my list for this year. Thank you for the video. You did great covering those miles with the short days of Winter and the conditions. Beautiful river.
Happy Belated Birthday! My family and I just attempted the Foothills Trail just a few weeks ago. I am happy to say that all those blow downs have been cleared! I think they would have quit a lot sooner if we had to deal with those obstacles! Thank you for sharing your adventure! I can not wait for our 2nd attempt next year.
Sorry you didn't get to see the entire trail this year, hope you all can finish next time...it is an awesome trail! Those blowdowns about got me lost a few times trying to navigate around them!
Wow. What a great misadventure!! Sorry to hear about Taz’s dog. I can’t believe you were hiking in shorts in the snow. It must have warmed up. Glad you didn’t get hurt when you slipped on the bridge. I can’t believe that other bridge cost 1.6 million. Neat suspension bridge though. I learned about using the smart water bottle with my sawyer from Evans backpacking. It’s much easier when you’re on the go. I think I hear a pig, so you might have been on the right section. Lol. Looks like you had a great trip.
Thanks for tuning in Scott! I learn something new every time I'm on the trail. I'm a shorts guy anytime its above 40, lol. It was a great trip despite its challenges.
I’m going to do this in March. I have not finished your vid yet but I will. My question so far. Do u just get water anywhere that you see? Or is there a designated spot to get water? So far I have not seen you get water to filter. Do you use a gps for this trail?
Great questions! There was water everywhere along this trail in the form of streams and rivers. There are no designated areas with water that I’m aware of so you need to have a filter system with you. The trail was blazed very well but it’s very helpful to have a little pocket map with you to know where the upcoming water sources and campsites are. I would recommend getting on the foothills Trail Facebook page and website to glean information from. I can’t remember the name of the Maps right off hand, just let me know if you need anymore help and I’m happy to advise. If you need a shuttle be sure to reach out to Jim Simpson a.k.a. Taz, he was awesome.

I would think so just because this time of year you will encounter many people along the trail including day hikers. However, there will still be remote areas where I'm sure you will be alone many times. To best get your question answered I would suggest asking the Foothills Trail Facebook group....there is a wealth of information on there and I'm sure this topic has been covered before. Happy hiking!
Senior Hiker 77 Thanks so much! It’s a great trail and I would love to go back again Some day! I would be sure to include the section along the Chattooga river and stay at Burroughs Ford campground for at least one night that area was beautiful!
Awesome hike and video! I've completed the FHT in two sections but am thinking about going back in December 2019 to do a thru. Would be the same time frame as your hike - late Dec/early January. If you remember, how much daylight did you have? What times were sunrise/sunset? Thanks, again congrats on the hike.
It was a great time to be on that trail especially if you dislike heat and humidity like me. I can't remember for sure on the sunrise but I believe it was close to 7:30 or 7:45 or so and sunset was very early, around 5:30. That's the only problem for me when hiking in early winter, the nights come so quickly. Thanks for watching and commenting and I hope you enjoy your hike!
Another great video adventure. I'm planning on hiking this trail the first week of March. Any advice for this trail? Also, what camera do you use and what pack is that you carry?
This is a great trail! Table Rock was a more difficult start and a more beautiful area and Oconee would be an easy start or finish and much more plain section of the trail, once you leave the Chattooga River. For me, I wanted to end my hike with a stay at Burrels Ford Campground along the Chattooga, which was about 17 miles from the finish, and absolutely amazing! There is also an amazing camping area near the newly built suspension bridge that has picnic tables and firerings near heartbreak hill. I would recommend the Scott Lynch pocket guide book and the AntiGravityGear pocket map as well. I use a cannon G7X mark 2 and actually ordering the newer version, mark 3, today, as my mark 2 is starting to give me some issues. The pack I took on the FHT is the Zpacks Arc Haul and on the ST it was the Lite AF Curve 35. Let me know if you have any other questions.
It was about what I expected, but the blow downs, the snow, and the short days certainly made it much more difficult than it should have been. Thanks Joe!
The video did not do justice to how roaring that river was in spots.....at least a 5 foot drop! It would have turned me into "pelican" food for sure, lol!

Good job. A big group of us are heading out tomorrow to clean up some of those blow downs. It takes time to remove that much crap from a trail for sure.
Just finished your amazing journey on the FHT! The amount of blow downs there was insane. Heck of job staying with it and enduring those long miles and go around the debris. Very nice hike. Thinking about doing part of the Foot Hills Trail Thanksgiving 2019.👍
Senior Hiker 77 Thanks so much! It’s a great trail and I would love to go back again Some day! I would be sure to include the section along the Chattooga river and stay at Burroughs Ford campground for at least one night that area was beautiful!
Great video, you killed that trail. Awesome job
It about killed me at times, lol! Thanks man!
Enjoyed the video. If you make it back to Burrells Ford take a fishing rod. I've hauled a bunch of trout from that area.
Definitely plan to go back someday with my wife and hopefully catch some trout! Thanks Chuck!
Happy birthday brother! You beasted it! Glad I was finally able to get to this one.
Thanks Tim, I appreciate the comment!
really great vid man. Crazy how much blow down there was. I can imagine how frustrating that would be when your trying to bust out high miles!
Bryce Newbold very frustrating! But still an amazing trip! Thanks Bryce!
Great video as always! Looks like an awesome trail!
Love hiking in the Carolina's! Thanks!
@@jasonwish- Thanks for they reply! You confirmed what I thought the times would be.
Really, really well done, Jason. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. New subscriber!
Thanks so much PatJ61! Glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoyed this one. I love long mileage trips might have to do one soon. Your filming and editing is awesome man keep it up.
Thanks Jason, wish you could have made this one....it was some great conditioning for sure.
Amazing trail, Jason! Loved this one!
Thanks Lance, I appreciate that!
Absolutely beautiful like you got there thank you for showing I mean this is absolutely beautiful and I'm sorry about the man's dog it's a shame
Made for a very memorable hike for sure! Thanks for watching!
That snail was moving about as slow as I do on the trail 😂 Great Video man!
LOL! You probably would have slipped and/or fell about a dozen times too 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks Josh!
Congratulations on your thru-hike. Was it easier or harder than you expected?
It was about what I expected, but the blow downs, the snow, and the short days certainly made it much more difficult than it should have been. Thanks Joe!
If it was warm I'd sure try the river in the talon you talked about at 33:10
The video did not do justice to how roaring that river was in spots.....at least a 5 foot drop! It would have turned me into "pelican" food for sure, lol!
Sorry about your dog
Great video. I did 26 miles with the creekchicken outdoors guys and we enjoyed every min. Go check it out. We had to name drop you in the video because we got to meet taz while on trail and had to remember where we knew him from(this video). Keep up the great work.
Good job. A big group of us are heading out tomorrow to clean up some of those blow downs. It takes time to remove that much crap from a trail for sure.
Great! Thanks for all you do for the trail....I'm sure it's more appreciated than you know!
Just finished your amazing journey on the FHT! The amount of blow downs there was insane. Heck of job staying with it and enduring those long miles and go around the debris. My wife and I really enjoyed it. Especially all of the waterfalls. She also said man he has a good camera. She didn’t realize you were the same person we were watching yesterday lol. Great stuff man! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Hope you got that juicy steak
I had no idea what I was getting myself into on those blow downs! I've heard that they are still getting cleaned up!! Love my g7x! The steak was awesome! Thanks Jeremiah!
Subscribed!!! It looks like a perfect time of year for that area! When did you do this hike?
Thanks! It was Dec. 17-20. The week prior was cold, rainy and windy, so I just watched the forcast and since I was flexible I made sure to go when the weather settled down.
First....BOOM!!!
You must have been waiting, lol!
Finished watching...awesome hike man!!! The views were killer!!! Way more scenic than the LHHT... the blow downs looked miserable... oh well, at least you beat your own personal record!!!
@@RESTLESSOUTDOORS Thanks man! I edited out most of my complaining....there was plenty of it, lol! But all in all, it was an amazing place. Would love to see it it the summer to enjoy all the rivers. I didn't see any rope swings though 😉
My dog will not get any more shots after the first set. It lasts for a lifetime. It’s poison
Yeah, I think you're right.
This one is on my bucket list, can't wait to do this trail. Thanks for taking us along.
