  • The Curse cast members Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder, Benny Safdie, & Nizhonniya Luxi Austin and Executive Producer Dave McCary discuss the new series with FLC Programmer Dan Sullivan. Learn more: www.filmlinc.org/series/the-c...
In this brilliantly discomfiting collaboration between Nathan Fielder (hot on the heels of his revelatory comic creation The Rehearsal) and Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems, NYFF57; Oppenheimer), Fielder and Emma Stone (La La Land; The Favourite, NYFF56) play Asher and Whitney Siegel, married entrepreneurs (don’t call them gentrifiers!) whose latest plan is to flip houses and convert them into eco-friendly homes for the struggling residents of Española, New Mexico-all for a home improvement-style reality show being overseen by an ingratiating producer (Safdie) with demons of his own. From this premise, which nimbly touches upon inescapable American issues of race, class, and capital, Fielder and Safdie branch out into an increasingly tangled network of ethical and moral gray zones, expertly balancing the tender and the merciless. Following the world premiere of episodes 1-3 at the 61st New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center is pleased to present the remaining seven episodes from this genre-defying, riotously funny series, directed by Fielder and David and Nathan Zellner. An A24/Showtime release.

Love how the host manages to make that first relatively simple question into a convoluted multi paragraph confusing mess that he just leaves the actors with. It’s very artful in its own way. Not many people could do that bad of a job without intention!

Commented this after being astounded by the first question but I am here to confirm that it is every question! My guy talks like he is trying to fluff up the word count to his questions even going as far as repeating the same word over and over instead of pausing to actually use his brain and think about what he is saying. Once again I would like to applaud this level of commitment to failure. Incredible performance.

“The slicing of the meat is me giving pieces of myself to people, whether I want to or not, and as a Native person that’s basically what you are doing every day. Whether people choose to eat it is totally up to them. And you ate it.”
And then Whitney just completely misses the point, doesn’t realize she was just called out, and says “That was beautiful.” That part was so great.

I actually hated that line. It was faux victimhood, which sadly is so pervasive today. In 2024, a Native American has the exact same rights as everyone else. No one is being oppressed or expecting anything more from a Native American or any other race. I would understand that quote if we were living in the 1830s though

    • @richardbreen1026

I definitely feel what Emma said about Whitney and Cara's dialogue really starkly defining Whitney. Its like Cara just by being her honest self and having both a forthrightness AND a measured, distanced relationship with her shines a light so bright on her negative/superficial/artificial traits that they practically set on fire. I really hope to see more of Nizhonniya in the future, shes really amazing. The details about her improvising those important lines were wild, it felt like something that almost could have seeded the whole idea of the show, but instead was just her unscripted interpretation of her characters internality. Thats Actor-y AF.

I think his pain was easiest to see, and he was willing to change himself in ways that he thought would make himself good. Even if they wouldn't, that predicament is easy to empathize with, we want him to fulfill his emotional arc and he seems to want that as well. Safdies character actively wants to ignore what he should do while creating the appearance he would never do that, and Emmas character actively leans into her worst attributes and seems to feel no shame at all, so it's easy to want both of them to fail.@@odog8x16

i see a lot of comments alleging emma is "like whitney" and that just ... is the opposite of the truth. first of all, she has diagnosed anxiety disorder and panic disorder, hence the discomfort and what could be interpreted as hostility or tension you see that may look like whitney and her ever conflicting array of emotions but emma's isn't due to any kind of ill intent lying underneath a fake smile or whatever. it's rather a "fake it till you make it" as in "pretend things are fine even though i'm terrified." she's talked about being terrified of public speaking. the tension isn't hostility but rather, nerves. she's said and i quote that she's "a bundle of nerves" and "constantly overthinking" everything she says and doesn't say.
next, her "attitude" is being taken literally when in reality, she, like nathan, does a lot of bits, sarcasm, and dry humor in the natural way she communicates. to this tune, emma knows nathan and benny a lot better and is close friends with the two as opposed to not knowing nizhonniya as well, hence a presence of more anxiety when speaking to her that, like i said, seems to be read as hostility.
finally, her not wanting to be the one to speak *first* when prompted about oppressive systems that she doesn't experience and in turn obviously shouldn't be the one to lead the discourse about is GOOD !! that and as she later says, she had a lot of comments to make but wanted to take time to make sure things were articulated properly for such an important subject. that hesitation shows how much she cares. she's talked in the past about being apprehensive to speak on oppressive systems she isn't affected by in a spokesperson role like this for fear she would indeed be speaking over someone or unintentionally causing other harm. if you listen to nathan talk about how she and dave were the ones who wanted *cara's* explanation about the meat in the show, that is a direct testament to my point: that she wants to center the people who experience the oppression so that their voices can be heard.

Yea, she's really smart and I wish she was able to direct an episode with the fellas this season. Super self aware and not only gets the jokes, but knows how the reception of the jokes will go and the follow up questions that will come from it. I'm would love to see more footage of the three of them behind the scenes. She's got this strong energy to her, and she seems like the type to be aware of everybody's comfort levels at a party, and just sees things differently. My take.
Nathan seems to appreciate how Emma works through things, and I know he has a lot going on behind the scenes. Nathan works hard, and I think he always has. He's like Tim Heidecker in that he can't back track, so he's always going further than before when it comes to his performance as Nathan :) I can't imagine how stressed he had to be getting into character as Asher. Dark, dark shit.
Nathan Fielder's role as 'Nathan Fielder', and obviously Asher, have set him up as this celeb where it's so hard to imagine him with a girlfriend that the news of the two getting together would hit harder than usual. He 's a bit too smart for a lot of people, and they get frustrated trying to figure him out - it can lead to obsession (UA-cam has tons of hours+ videos of fan theories on Nathan etc etc.. strange) I'm glad he's able to establish that he's actually been acting the whole time, and that he's always been this good. I hope he doesn't end up in tons of Rom Coms somehow (unless he wants the money) because his performance was super rawdog/can't fake this. Top Tier TalentI love how Nathan Fielder's role as 'Nathan Fielder', obviously Asher, have set him up as a celeb where it's so hard to imagine him with a girlfriend that the news of the two getting together would hit harder than usual.
You see the stressors in him more than you do with Benny, but Benny is a god damn Ringmaster, and he is captivating by nature. Did you see him on Jimmy Kimmel? Insane. I love his anti humor roots, and I love how he pranked Tom Sharpling's show. If him and his brother end up parting for good professionally, then I think Nathan is a good Safdie net. I love Benny's tricky little mind and I will never be able to predict where his scripts go! He thinks in a way I don't, and I think a lot of that is where he grew up, and just that level of chaos/concurrency with shit going on all the time everywhere. And he just loves it so him and his brother have scenes where conversations cancel each other out, or there's mumbling. It's just real, and the way he writes/directs children feels real. Love it.

      @marcusmason8328 5 місяців тому +14

Not saying Emma wasn't being genuine, nor do I expect her to be a great speaker on injustices/capitalism/racial themes presented in the show. I actually think Whitney was "genuinely" praising Cara in many moments of the show too. Regardless of intent or how morally sound Emma/Whitney are, the dynamic between a very successful white actor/producer and an up and coming indigenous actor/writer/artist is just sort of similar to their characters on the show, and was reflected on in this panel.

And is refreshing that an actress that like so much, for many many years stands behind the ideas of this show, and not with the crap Hollywood is trying to brainwash people everyday.

Great opportunity and very thankful for the Q/A. But for anyone in the situation in the future, the crowd should be queried for questions for all the panelists. Specifically here for Nizhonniya, and also Emma to an extent. Nathan and Benny are ready at any chance to talk talk talk and as tricksters also to derail. A moderator needs to know this and be ready for it. Dave had the right idea with a lightening round but that was only necessary because the moderator had already not commanded the space properly. A moderator should make everyone feel in their right place, such that they are not having to spill over their sides with responsibilities that shouldn't be theirs; when that happens, what each individual desires from the situation gets muddied by cross-talk and a confusion of places. Not throwing any shade here, just offering a reflection on how to respect the panelists and the crowd, so everyone is involved in the most optimum way and can shine for what they are. (For example, on the good/bad character question, that is a time for the moderator to jump in and direct it straight to Nizhonniya first; then the others would 'remember' that she hadn't spoken in over half an hour, and likely would gladly wait upon her words. I for one would have loved to hear her answer on that question; and been saved Benny's captious rejection of the binary, in any case.)

I thought his takes were p good on the show! He clearly studies film and reads a lot since he formulate his thoughts amazingly, but I agree, maybe his questions were posed a but confusingly since they weren't straight forward. Honestly, it felt as though his listeners were attempting to catch the previous train of thought before riding it out, and therefore when he arrived at the station (the question), they were lost already.
Simpler, punchier questions seem to create more discussion, much like shitty abstract art. Sometimes when something is so beautiful outright, it leaves less room for thought for the audience.

The BAC thing isn't accurate. One drink will have the average person blow around a .06+ within the hour. Two drinks within an hour and people usually beyond the legal limit. In order to stay under the limit,it requires the average person to only have one drink per hour. There's obviously a lot of variables, but those limits are in place exactly because of the BAC averages that people will have when drinking. The idea is that the law really only wants people having 1 drink per hour if they're gonna drive.
