This song has existed in my mind for nearly twenty years now, at the first chime of an acoustic I can't help but hear the opening lyrics play in my ears. I'm very glad you guys are still able to do what you do and your passion shines through in it. May many more find your music permanently scrawled in their minds and feel enriched for it.
@@somerandomguy3129 The Brotherhood of the Coast were a loose coalition of privateers who ravaged the Caribbean. They were generally Protestants (mostly from England but some French Huguenots as well) and were legally authorized to attack Spanish and French (Catholic) settlements, ships and property. This song describes a (hopefully fictional but not necessarily) attack on a town in Panama where they massacre the innocent civilians.
Hiding in the jungle in the dregs of night steel flinging in the pre-dawn light citizens all lying down in bed our ships come round full of bold Buccaneers We'll own Panama before the sun goes down there is no safe place in the lands of Spain we'll take the ships and we all own the place we are the ones they fear the most the Brotherhood. Brotherhood. Brotherhood. Brotherhood of the coooooast
Hi, Matija, I'm Mark, one of the guitarists. Thanks for the comment! Funny thing - we asked our good friend A Lee Worman to write the music for this. He gave us a melody with no chords and we had to figure those out for ourselves! This is what we came up with for the melody Lee wrote: INTRO-- B7 A G B7 Em VERSES-- Em G Em D Em G Em B7 (4X) CHORUSES-- G A Em D G A Em B7 Em G Em D G A D Em Em G Em D B7 A G B7 Em LAST LINE-- B7 A G F# B7 Em Hope that helps. I think that's how I play it, anyway.
It's the brethren of the coast lol idk about you guy but I want alot pieces of eight fun fact pieces of eight was a gold coin that could be split into eight pieces thus pieces of eight
Have a question for you.. is this song about Captain I'Olonnais? Trecking through the jungle.. locking the citizens in the church torturing the locals.... pure hatred for the Spanish?
No, this is referencing a group called The Brethren or the Brethren of the Coast, a coalition of pirates raiding the Spanish Main. But fear not! You want a song about L'Ollonois? We've got you covered - as long as you speak French, that is: ua-cam.com/video/w_YQRcVituA/v-deo.html
@TheJollyRogers ah, I know of the brethren. the story reminded me heavily of I'Olonnais since I've been reading of him today, was curious if he would've been a part of it himself!
@@gamecarnival2024 Great question! L'Ollonois operated out of Tortuga, which is where the Brethren were based out of. We can't say for certain that he was with the Brethren, but perhaps? If anyone knows, we'd love to learn more!
You're not wrong, REZA2, but there is one very important thing to keep in mind: this song is actually based on real events and real pirates. We're telling the story of the Brethren of the Coast, which was a group of privateers who held letters of marque allowing them to attack Spanish ships without fear of being branded as pirates by either England or France. So we would argue that it isn't the song (or us) that's biased against the Spanish, but rather the group who's history we're relating. A fine line to be sure, but an important one.
