  • Today I am planting 60 golden rain trees from seed. I will take you out on location to show you the beautiful tree and harvest seeds for planting. Golden Rain Tree is the best heat tolerant tree for garden zone 9b it gets beautiful yellow flowers in the late spring and early summer. The flowers become lantern shaped paper like seed pods that are very attractive and always changing colors. Golden Rain Trees are a wonderful heat tolerant fast growing shade tree. Golden rain tree is also a pollinator magnet! Garden Happy with Liz in California garden zone 9b

There is so much interest in this tree in every season. My favorite is the little lantern shaped seed pods. Maybe I will just have to buy one at the nursery. Thank you for your comment! Hello Bettina, thank you for taking the time to watch this video and leave me this comment. I am going to be 100% completely honest with you. Not one seed germinated. I am so disappointed. And this is the second time I have tried growing them for seed. I also gave my sister some seeds and none of hers germinated as well. That is why I have not been able to post any updates. I really appreciate you for asking and showing interest. Please if you find out some thing that I am doing wrong I would love to hear your thoughts and experience. But this was a big failure for me. The only thing I can think of is maybe the seeds I gathered off the ground were contaminated because the city may have sprayed the ground for weeds. So what I will do is get some seeds directly from the pod before they drop and try again. Three is a charm right? Hahaha 🌸😇👍

The only thing I can think of is a location where I harvest the seeds perhaps it was contaminated. Maybe the workers sprayed the ground for weeds or pesticides. Hey Happy Garden,
    Well my golden rain tree has been in the ground for a while. Well, this summer has been extremely hot here in central Texas. I have been watering ever so often. My tree is about 4 feet tall with a collection of leaves. Well my tree has a case of black spots which I was thinking it was brought on being in direct sun. South area of my property. I believe this plant may take a lot of heat but needs a time in shade at some point during the day with these extreme temperatures. I don’t have another place to move this tree. I’m scared that it will eventually die. I could perhaps plant a blue ice cypress in font of it, but that will take a few years before the golden rain tree gets any relief from that. The good thing, that now that we are in September, we should eventually get some relief from the heat in a couple of weeks.

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy  11 місяців тому +1

      Oh my goodness I am so excited for you and envious as well. The golden rain tree loves heat and sun so I think having it there is a great spot. Maybe the black spots are due to too much water. Maybe you can back off of the water a little bit and let it dry out. Congratulations and keep me posted this is such a fun topic and I am so happy for you. Yay!!! 👍😍❤️Liz

      Thanks. I will be keeping an eye on it. The ground around the golden rain tree was bone dry this morning. I put a gallon of water around it. This is this tree’s first summer. So how often should I water it. I actually don’t water it but once a week and only a few gallons. The tree is an area of my property that is about 10 or 12 feet lower than my house. It’s hard for me to carry water out to this area of my property. Thanks for getting back with me.

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy  11 місяців тому +1

      I am thinking that although the ground around your tree was dry underneath may not be, especially since it’s lower down than all the other areas in your garden. I would only water it once a week. But then as soon as fall begins I would not water it again because it will start raining in the winter. I have a feeling your tree might be getting water under the ground. I’m not an expert gardener so I may not be the one to ask. But I do know the tree is very drought tolerant and grows great in areas where they are not watered every day.

    • @tessloneill7978
      @tessloneill7978 5 місяців тому +1

      Well, it is spring now. I am 40 minutes from Austin Texas. My golden rain tree is growing very well… finally and I am not watering like I did last summer. The reason why I planted it was the deer won’t touch it. Not even to rub their antlers on them. The back of my property seemed to be eroding into the creek. That’s what I thought three years ago. So I quickly tried to plant some trees. The deer took everything down. Even the yaupon holly. But I worry about it being considered invasive. If I get something to grow, I can hardly bring myself to take it down. The only vegetable I am successful at is potatoes. So I grow potatoes and sunflowers and zinnias. Anyway, a large conversation about my rain tree. I planted it basically in the woods. The creek is almost always dry. I can’t see this tree getting out of hand. Needs water to germinate I believe. It rained two inches about eight weeks ago. Hope everything is going well for you.

    I planted this tree last November with some reservation. I heard it was invasive. But I figured since it rarely rains where I live-between San Antonio and
    Austin and can be very dry here that it wouldn’t take off like it does in other places. What do you think?

    • @GardenHappy
      @GardenHappy  Рік тому +1

      Hello Tessloneill and thank you for taking the time to watch my video. I think the Golden Rain Tree is an excellent choice for your area. And it adds so much visual interest all year long. I don't think it is invasive at all!!! I planted 60 seeds and I was NOT able to germinate any of them. I tried again a few months later with no luck again. . . and my sister who lives in Oregon was not able to germinate of of her seeds either. So my point is. . . . it does not sprout from seed easily therefore I don't feel it is invasive at all. It's just the opposite! hahaha So I hope you will enjoy your beautiful tree without any worries. Liz

The growth seems slower, and some of the leaves have damaged areas around the margins. I don't think it's from an insect. Maybe a fungus, I don't know. Some of the damage is black at the edges.
