2021+ Ford Bronco - I made a custom leather shift boot and it almost broke me!

- This was my most difficult project thus far! It might not seem like a lot, but I had to figure this out on my own, and I have almost ZERO experience using a sewing machine. Fortunately, my Mom gave me some guidance and that helped a lot.
The results are pretty good. Not professional level good, but good, and nothing compares to the satisfaction of blazing your own path and figuring something out for the first time. The leather with matching accent stitching is a huge improvement over the very ugly stock shift boot.
When I started this project, there were no vendors out there selling anything like it. Now that I am finished many months later, there is one that looks pretty good. If you don't want to sew your own, check them out at www.redlinegoo... and if you do buy one from them, my video will still help you with the installation process.
Here are some links to the products I used in this video:
Leather: amzn.to/3Ua1GYC
All of the other items needed are readily available from Joann Fabrics or a similar store: heavy duty thread (one black, and one in the accent color of your choosing) and a sewing machine needle specifically made to sew leather. All in costs for this project were about $25.
Comments and feedback welcome! I strive to reply to all of them. Thanks for watching!!
Thank you for posting this - I was able to make one today and with your instruction on reassembling the boot, it turned out perfect!
Awesome!! You are the first person to let me know they were able to replicate my work.
That's an ambitious project. You will be the only person with a custom boot.
Definitely among the very very few who have sewn their own, for sure! Thanks for watching!
I'll be attempting to dye my stock boot orange-brown to match my Mabett seat covers. But unlike @BudgetBronco, I don't trust my own upholstery skills so I bought a brown leather boot from an old Toyota MR2 just in case the dye-job goes badly. Huge props to Budget Bronco for inspiring me to go on this endeavor!
Looking good! I’m waiting on a 2-door big bend that is being built this month, I’m definitely going to be doing several of the upgrades I’ve found on your channel!
AWESOME!! Good luck with your delivery
Thank you for posting how to dismantle the shift boot
It is pretty easy to get off if you know where the clips are...thanks for the comment!
Good job! I was worried for your hand when you used the exacto instead of a seamripper/unpicker. But you got it done. 👍
HAHA! I knew somebody would say that! I kinda even thought it myself when I was editing the footage, was not my safest move. And I later learned that people that sew regularly have a special tool just for this. Thanks for watching.
Great stuff you've done on the Bronco enjoy watching all videos.keep them coming.
Thanks 👍
Amazing video. Reslly clear guide and easy to follow what you're doing. I think I'm going to try this with my mazda 3
Thanks I hope it works out well for you! If you decide to go the easier route and buy one, check out these guys www.redlinegoods.com/ if nothing else the installation guide for your specific vehicle may help
Awesome. Love this channels uniqueness
I appreciate that...thanks for the comment!
That looks great ! Awesome job 👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I just saw your Bronco in Houston. Welcome to TX.
Thanks...that was me! Here on business.
The stock boot does have a cheap look and feel to it. I'll keep mine as long as it's durable but appreciate what you've done.
Sure, it is perfectly functional, no reason to replace it other than for looks....thanks for watching!
Could you do an update of how the vinyal wrap is holding up after a year?
Check out my video 'Ford Bronco - One year of ownership - Viewer Q & A' and I discuss and show pictures of how the wrap is holding up. Short answer, there are a few bubbles which I think are the result of my newbie installation job.
If I bought my own leather boot from redline goods and got my dealership to install it how long do you think it would take for them to take the vinyl one out and put the new leather one in and do you think they would have any problems with it or would it be easy for them?
Thanks.
SUPER easy. If you were doing it the first time, maybe 15 minutes tops. If I were doing it a second time, easily under 5 minutes.
ok awesome thanks@@BudgetBronco
Great work! I feel that your mother probably was more involved in the sewing than you showed! Sewing is a great skill to have and the only way to get better is to make mistakes. The boot looks great tho! congrats!
HAHA no actually she really wanted me to do all the actual work myself. He did help me get it set up and gave me lots of advice though. Oh and when I goofed a couple of times (edited out) she helped rip out the bad stitches. Thanks for the comment!
Nice work 😎👍
Thanks ✌
I purchased a similar boot from Redline Goods for my 2012 Wrangler. They seem to have all these boots available for the Bronco. They sell a leather steering wheel cover, maybe the installation can make it into a future video.
Yes, the did recently start selling them for the Bronco as well. Back when I started this project 6+ months ago they were not available yet. How is the quality of the boot for your Wrangler? And you must have read my mind because I am definitely going to do the steering wheel cover in a future video. Thanks for watching!
@@BudgetBronco The boot has held up great with barely any maintenance but it was purchased about a decade ago, when quality meant a bit more than now... My Basesquatch was built a week ago and I expect it at the dealer in about a month, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of your videos! Keep up the great work.
Hey! How is the white paint holding up on the wheels? Any cracking, chipping or peeling?
Still looks great, no cracking or chipping or peeling! I did ding it one time when I dropped a wrench while removing lug nuts, but I just sprayed some paint on a little craft brush and touched it up, good as new. I will say this, the white gets dirty real quick, but washes up easily.
Very nice. Is this the first time you have shown/mentioned your Bronco is a manual?
Thanks! No, I don't think so. I am pretty sure I have mentioned it in some of my other videos, for example my Q&A video and my 'Off road driving and testing hill descent control' video
Nice work. Nice detail, I think I’ll try it myself. That boot has bothered me as well.
Cool, go for it! Check out this post I made on Bronco6g forum, and you will find a pattern that you can print out and it might save you some time, and you can work on making your own without having to disassemble the stock one. www.bronco6g.com/forum/threads/diy-custom-stitched-leather-manual-shift-boot.70170/
@@BudgetBronco I think I will make my own based on your pattern. I actually enjoy sewing and I would like to alternate some orange and blue stitching. Thanks again for the inspiration.
You are welcome and good luck with your project!
I guess I'm from the riff raff class because you could put a leather shift boot next to my vinyl boot, and I could not tell you the difference unless I turned them inside out. Then again I think the base sound system is fine, so......
Nah you could tell for sure. But hey go with what works for you, nothing wrong with keeping things stock if it suits you. Thanks for watching!
It would have been a lot easier if you had only cut one seam. You had the skin for it. Sorry, I spent 20 years as a leather accessory designer. You did a great job with it.
For sure, first time doing ANYTHING like this so lots to learn. Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching!
I love Guinea pigs
Nice!! 😂
NOT WORTH THE TROUBLES BUDD .. STOCK COVER LOOKS GOOD ENOUGH FOR A B.B. BRONCO !!
Not worth the trouble? Maybe. Stock cover looks good? I fully disagree on that part, I think it looks horribly cheap, even for an off-road vehicle. Thanks for watching!
It’s always worth the trouble. If only to have the satisfaction.
