- "Active learning" means you participate, collaborate with others, and apply concepts to the real world. It requires hard mental effort but leads to better retention and an understanding of the material that can be transferred to other situations. To explain how to apply Active Learning in classrooms, we collaborated with Professor Carl Wieman, a Nobel Prize winning physicist, who researches and champions the approach. Prof. Wieman helped us proofread, fact check and write the script - he was an invaluable source of information. It was our greatest honor to be able to work with a mind as bright as his. #activelearning

That's why it's important to have work and life experience. Once you have work and life experience, the classroom theory makes a lot more sense, and the information is retained better. As you would be able to apply that in real life.

In Germany there is a thing here called Ausbildung(Apprenticeship) we’re you learn the information and then put it in practice. All of this is part of the learning curriculum and most of the times you get payed. I wish the world had more of this. We could solve a big problem in a society with this educational system.

Unfortunately there are many rules and regulations schools need to follow, whether it’s beneficial or not.
In order to use techniques like this you sort of need to bend the rules a bit.
In order to receive funding schools focus on stuff like writing traditional curriculums and raising state test scores, not much else.

I've noticed that active learning encourages students to think hard and understand topics quickly. It was kind of difficult at the very beginning, but they have realized they have improved a lot in a couple of months.

And that ladies and gentlemens, is how\why I forgot almost all of the content I learn in high school and college.
I had a module for thermodynamics and the lecturer was so brilliant we all finished with a distinction. Still praise that man.
My grade 8 class was an at least a semi-active environment. I still remember that call pretty well and what we learnt, although it has been some time now. It truly does help to engage students somewhat. I miss that with 90% of my math teachers, non were as good as my 8th-grade math teacher.
Yes similar, this was called prac work within the computer systems course we did. Unfortunately it's difficult to find offline study like this anymore, I was lucky to be taught with people who knew there subject matter from real life experiences
Our english teacher teaches us by active learning and because of that, we could easily remember the details of the literary works that she taught us. Compared to our other subject teachers who use the conventional style of teaching, we get sleepy even though the discussion was short.

Going through the classes was merely a process of memorization
Subjects that were science based were a nightmare
I barely graduated from high school and wasn't interested in college
With time I knew that learning should not be like that, and started studying on my own using more useful, interactive and hands on methods
And now I'm a web developer in charge of a whole team
So yea, if you're struggling to learn, It's most likely not your fault
Try new learning methods like this one and you'll see the results for yourself

Beautiful and great ideas, such methods must be included in the educational curricula.
At uni my some of my professors do this, but one important aspect is that it requires effort (with practice it gets easier), at the end of the day my brain feels crushed haha but I do retain information for longer periods of time,so sometimes I only revise certain topics instead of everything (as I used to do)...also if you don't read before the class, there's no way you can solve the problems...so organization and consistency are also other main points for the method to work
I love active learning. In chemistry my teacher gives me question then we discus why we are right. Then we watch a video or he teaches us then we go in groups and make a short presentation.
The active learning method is fun done w interested learners and a guide, I can recall how my college psychology teacher used this form of pedagogy and it made a lasting impact. Thank you Mr. B and the creators behind this vid c:

my first-year physics course uses active learning. I really believe this works. since the form is too novel to me, I hardly ever forget anything from the course! the understanding of the material is definitely another level. it is hard at the beginning, but after I became adapted to it, this course becomes my highest course among courses this semester. Other courses are not using active learning.

my computer science prof tought a lot like this. Also, everytime as student came up with an idea thats wrong, he didnt say "thats wrong". he tested their ideas against other ideas and challenged a deep understanding of the topic. He never really explained, he showed us.
I wish this was how our teachers taught us in school
As a professor, I have no idea how we can perform this teaching style in our class. I am a math professor. It is impossible to cover all the material from the syllabus by this method, since it would take time to teach just one topic..
I am a very visual person and this makes it many times easy and interesting.

Active Learning in classes would mean teachers have to put in some effort to engage a class and work with the students. In essence, a happy classroom. The process becomes efficient over weeks thanks to neuroplasticity and compounding knowledge, making the job easier. But instead of that they'd rather keep the class quiet and in check, 'disciplined' (or should I say suppressed), do all the toxic atrocities to 'manage'(should I say control) a student, waste effort achieve nothing, be incompetent and unproductive, for some job satisfaction and feel miserable all the same ; idiocy at its finest.
Many times, we teachers, get observed because our children "are having too much fun with you"...... 😥😥
I can (and do) make the most engaging and fun lessons that challenge students... but they don't want to do it... they just want you to tell them the answer... they want an A but won't put in time or effort to get it...
We should even change the word "education" to discovery
Many students are used to being passive listeners OR just get unfocused if they are given a task. Facilitating productive active learning is a higher skill set, it's worth it, but it's significantly harder than preparing a lecture (for most teachers).
I have learned as student and thought active learning as teacher in my class. Thank you sprouts for helping teachers teach more effectively.

I hate it when I have to do all the talking. so now I learnt that instead of talking about what I want my students to know, i just design it as an interesting activity that they have to spend time doing together

If u want somewhat detailed explanation I have provided below well my exact state
it's more rote coz we evem remember assumptions (which will be totally wrong ) and for the following assumptions we mug up extra stuff and the pathetic part is teacher will even defend answer if it's wrong coz well if they accept means u know the concept and by knowing concepts u will apply the correct logic for a wrng question(which again requires wrng knowledge) and u will score less then teacher's name spoiled so the cycle just continues

I just realized that my favourite lecturers were the ones who used this method.
Though i am not a teacher(but of course a student) , i always had a intution that best way to teach someone something is by asking a question first(i firmly believe a teacher who understands his topic well, will know what question to ask to trigger right thinking among learners) , then getting answers & plausible explanations for it from learners(even though they have slightest prior knowledge) and after that give actual concept explanation to learners by frequently referring to the wrong explanation given by them at starting(if any) so to tell them where they lost the track to actual explanation.
Now i know why this method will work. Today I am glad to know that my intution has a testimony from a nobel prize winner. Nice VideO!!! 👍🙂

I’m a little bit curious about how we can ascertain students would read textbooks and understand concepts before classes. In my country, most students don’t take preview assignments seriously. How can we deal with it?

I thought this method seemed oddly familiar... and it was! Wieman taught at my university and we use his method.

Sprouts Yes. I understood things better which helped with long term retention.
How did you end up finishing the course as it seems that it will take a lot of time to cover one topic?
This is very possible when every next lesson has concepts from almost every lesson previously taught
Taking Science in India has this benefit that we are asked every 2nd day about the concept we learned long back
The questions need to be real life examples cause this gives a new perspective of how we look at things
At the end, its all about your curiosity to learn something irrespective of teacher, sub or your environment

I've developed a personal learning plan that is both effective and suitable for me with one UA-cam search. Wish the schools could do the same. I reall have a hard time at school since I don't learn much with their teaching so I self study and then get good marks during exams. But during our discussions I cant answer most of the questions they ask so they think I dont know anything thus if I get good marks they usually suspect me of cheating. It's depressing at this point.

In practice, work in groups happens like this: 5 fuckers all insist on the wrong answer, you say the right one, everyone votes, you lose. In the end, it turns out that the answer is wrong, but no one cares, since no one is responsible for it. No matter how specific no one suggested it, this is the group's answer, which means that you can't point your finger at someone alone and say, you're wrong. Everyone will shift the answer to each other and in the end, everyone will not care about defeat and they will not learn anything. And they will do the same next time. Inspired by my own university studies.
