2001 Acura Integra Type R | Review

- The saying says "Don't meet your heroes" but it's not always correct, as this 2001 Acura Integra Type R so deftly proves. This is the best front-wheel-drive car, ever built.
Acura loaned me a museum-quality Integra Type R for a full week and it's the most nervous I've ever been with a press vehicle. The engine is a joy to rev into the sky, the shift lever is tight, the suspension is properly stiff, and everything about the Type R just feels perfect.
These opportunities are rare, but I enjoy them when they come around... and this one lived up to all the hopes I had for it. The 2001 Acura Integra Type R is a truly excellent and amazing machine.

Jeff I 100000% agree with you, I love the S2000 and absolutely love the NSX.....but to me, and this has been my thought for going on what 20 some years now?...the Integra Type R is THE best car, the BEST car Honda have ever made. I like that car that damn much 👌
thanks.. i love mine alot too.. I'm holding on to it for life
Got my jdm 98 dc2 in may, ive wanted one for 8 years now and it makes me smile every time i drive it
Hell yeah love the part when you said you’d rather own this integra than a S2000.
I can't believe Acura pulled this out of the museum!!
The best FW chassis. Three reasons: low weight, seam welded and the last Integra with double-wishbone. It holds the FW record at Road Atlanta. My RSX is like an aspiring understudy waiting just offstage while the master thespian performs their art.
So well put. I carry the same emotion.
As someone who's also driven an Integra Type R, I totally understand the love. I thought it was just hype bullshit before I drove one, but afterwards... Yeah it makes sense, they're REALLY fucking good. Everyone should try to get their hands on one at some point. It's worth the effort.
I bought mine without ever getting to test drive it. The dealer just put it out on the showroom floor as I was passing by. I left with it that morning. I feel fortunate that I was able to own and drive one for two years before selling it.
I got 1 for Christmas @ age 16 in 2006! Then I got in lots of trouble with it 😅 Lol Definitely Worth it!! ...& I had to get rid of it.....😔😪I'm Drooling 🤤 right now ahhhh... Phoenix Yellow is the 1 I had!
I absolutely love mine. I also agree about the S2000. Not that the S2000 is a bad car, I just feel the Type R is a better car.
Those double wishbone FWD Honda’s with a standard transmission are the best
Likewise and I have had both.
I wish that I had hung onto my Type R. I added the factory side skirts, factory round fog lights, comptech exhaust, headers and intake. I also bought the type R carbon fiber key chain from Honda of Japan. I still have it hanging in my garage. I have never seen another one like it. I keep all of my old Type R memorabilia on a shelf. I have dozens of models and die cast cars along with the window sticker and touch up paint.
@@mocheen4837 Damn that’s cool! What year ITR and what country? So awesome to have the window sticker. I have never seen that key chain before. I have a 98 ITR CDM. CT ice box, RMF header, high flow cat, Hytech twin loop exhaust, Spoon springs and dampers with Hardrace camber arms, Kosei K1 15x7+ 38 with RE71R tires, JDM Recaro and 98 spec steering wheel.
@@mocheen4837 I had a Phoenix Yellow 2000 Type-R. Ordered it in December of 1999 and it was at the dealer in February of 2000. Badge number #625. I put Apexi N1 coilovers, JDM rear strut bar, OEM round fog lights, JDM fog light switch, JDM shift boot, Apexi N1 exhaust, JDM ITR header, and AEM intake. The car literally sounded like a sport bike. God I miss that car! It was so raw and fun to drive.
my first car was an integra. 17 years later I still own one. just an absolute blast to drive
Is yours a Type R ?
Spot on with your comparisons of the Integra Type R dc2 to the S2000. I own both and the Integra just feels more special to the S2000 in terms of driving enjoyment. The sitting position, rawness, light weight, steering feel and gearing of the integra makes it feel more like a race car compared to the S2000.
Just how I imagine it. Rsx-s driver here.
Still looks amazing and one of those rare cars that just seems timeless in design and drivability. Love it
I was waiting for this review after your IG post and it was exactly what I expected. These were special cars that showed what a well set up FWD car can be if the engineers have the time and are willing to get rid of the understeer safety net. The Fiesta and Focus ST recapture some of that magic for me. Probably why I owned two of them and am probably going to buy another when I can afford to have two vehicles. The key is that big rear swaybar and stiffer rear suspension that pretty much eliminates understeer. It even allows oversteer in the right conditions. It just feels right.
Perfectly timed video! This yellow beasty perfectly shows how modern cars have lost their way and gotten way to tubby
I hate that these are unobtanium now, but I love how much they’re appreciated. #1 on my hope to drive someday list.
100% TRUTH damn I miss those cars such a fantastic driving experience, fucking fanTASTIC
Currently driving an Integra GS in college rn. I’d kill to have that car. I love mine but there’s just something about it that is just awesome on another level.
Despite its age, a great example of pure mechanical connection.
Integra Type R is jus soooo amazing I got to test drive one back in 2002 it was a 2000 phoenix yellow with very low mileage for 23k but unfortunately I didn't have any credit which sukd, but still remember driving it was such a great day
Acura must be coming out with an Integra since they are letting the press drive this car.
Acura needs to bring back the integra I’d be super happy if they bring it back
that would be pretty cool.. that means i HAVE TO get one for sure
i didnt care for the new CTR i think it's ugly AF
Itr 1244 most newer cars now and days are ugly Af there’s some good looking newer cars but a majority of them aren’t good looking
If they were it better be a coupe. It's a shame Honda seems to be allergic to 2 door cars lately.
Makes you wonder if they have a reboot coming.
I just bought one on BAT for stupid money! Should take delivery next week
DId you just buy the one that went for $60?! lol!
The Hooniverse possibly....
Nice! You will not be disappointed.
I have that car and agree with the s2k comment 💯 it's an unbelievable car to this day.. slow compared to today's standardization but so well balanced and so fun
I own a 95 delsol, with the b16a3 vtec motor, i love it
Agreed the S2000 supposed to be top notch but the Type R is one of a kind.
Great honest review of a great car. You just can't beat vtec or a dc2🤩🤩🤩
Put a cold air intake under the hood and VTEC gets really angry. I know by experience. 😁
In Australia we also have Milano red, Recaro seats, Momo seats and a centre console delete
Ausie spec is similar to the euro spec... Just rhd and no rear fog light.
@@martins4340 mine is a 01 model and doesn't have rear fog lights either
I agree 1000 Times! Wish Honda/Acura still would have it in their lineup!
Such a beautiful car my dream car good review.
You should get/drive that 2001 prelude sh, that Red Line Reviews did.
Love this! I have had an 01 ITR now 98 ITR. They are special cars. In Canada white is far more common than yellow. We had CW 97-99 and PY in 00 only. 2001 CW on red only for Canada. One of the biggest challenges is finding parts. Everything is going discontinued now. Find a clean and unmodified car if you can.
I too would take the type R Jeff!!!!
huh?? im jeff and i also own a 2001 integra type R..
Very good review.
Weird thing is that doesn't look like the stock Titanium shift knob. Looks like the RSX non-Type S aluminum one.
They were red ones too, at least in Europe
I wish I had my engine in that chasis!!!! Type R mated with a 2.0 bottom .
I rallied and raced one of mine since 2005 (JDM '96) fully caged homologated race car, K20a swapped 2014, K24 swapped 2020. All engines factory original long blocks, totally reliable.
The other one I have is also '96 JDM in Championship White, fully factory original except for Mugen headers and exhaust through to twin loop rear box, 53000miles, rust free. A fabulous car to drive on our wonderful New Zealand roads.
Plenty of race footage on my channel.
I had a black 01 type R. Amazing brakes and cornered like it was on rails on freeway on-ramps but I didn’t like cruising on the highway doing 65 mph at about 4300 rpm. I was always looking to shift into 6 gear which it didn’t have. If you have an Rsx type S like I do, try staying in 5th gear doing 65-70 on the highway for as long as you can. It gets tiresome. Attacking looping freeway on-ramps were blissful with the Itr.
I feel you, I have a 98 prelude SH low miles bone stock and I wish it had that 6th gear...its at 4000rpm when going 80mph...the prelude is a quieter heavier car but still it would have been perfect with an extra gear...
Loved my 98 Prelude, best ride/handling balance right out of the box.
I would own that type r over a s2000 any day without hesitation
Same.
Me too, and by the way I Do!
One of the best Honda of all time
No doubt the NSX is the top of the mountain but at the same time dont forget the S2000, Integra, Prelude or CRX these cars are great in their own ways;D
Euro Accords has 2 engines 2.0 what is the K20A6 engine and the stronger the 2.2 what is K24A. Yes the 4th generation Preludes got 3 variations, first for japanese and european market the 2.0i F20A4, second the H23 what contains 160horsepower and the H22A the strongest, but dont forget the Preludes was the only Honda what has the 4WS what is awesome in handling.
I love S2000 too 240horsepower for a non turbo 2.0 litre engine is awesome
Thanks! Yes you right i like these treasures:D
Damn I miss mine and my 2002 honda integra type r
I admit that it was a really fun car to drive. I could not deal with people constantly looking in the windows or trying to steal it. I remember always having to check the hood and trunk to make sure my emblems were still there.
The closest i will ever come to one of these is my 99 EK coupe with my jdm B16a with full exhaust system and street coils.
Had a 2000 EM1. Still think about that car...
Integra TypeR 🤤😍
- a proud owner of 94 & 01 integra
Hands down this is my favorite car 👍
👍. Good job on description
I love my RSX type S, I realize the suspension isnt as good as the type R, but its still great nonetheless, I would rather keep my RSX than get a type R, unless its a dc5 type R that is...other than the suspension and lack of LSD, I prefer everything about the RSX type S over the dc2 type R, and there is always the aftermarket...
I have been saying 2001 was the last one made, everyone said it only went to 2000
I purchased my yellow Type R back in 2000 for $24,500. I paid $500 over invoice for it.
ojala algún dia tenga el mio
Always found it funny how the US/Acura version got the crappy seats, whereas the rest of the world got Recaro's. Can't remember what other spec differences there are, other than perhaps the header on that version being inferior to the JDM model. 5700rpm changover...must just be USDM also. Again, can't remember the specific engine code but UK got B18C6 and changover was about 6k.
I'm sorry but "the best car ever" that's 20 years old with 40k miles or 4600 miles or whatever is criminal. Cars are meant to be driven, get out and drive your f'n car, who cares what the value is? What's the point of sitting around saying "yeah I have a Type-R, it's amazing, I never drive it?"
When I sold my Type R it had 24,000 miles on it after 2 years of driving. Although now my M3 and 911 S sit in the garage. My lifted 4Runner and Tesla Model 3 Performance are outside and hardly ever move due to COVID 19.
Mazdaspeed 3 gen 2 hands down the best fwd 4 cylinder car
How would you compare the Integra Type-R to the Integra Type-S?
This to the new Type S? Pretty difficult to compare the two, to be honest. Different machines for different points in time... If someone had the keys to either in front of me, and I had to take a road trip alone it's in the Type R but with friends or family it's the Type S.
Love you Jeff! U rule
Found one listed for $47,900 USD By dealer located in the North East ,USA . cheers
How does it compare to the Civic Type R?
It's a special machine
I owned more than 30ITRs since 2004 most of them was crashed vehicles that i have parted out.
At the moment i have 3, one is a black car in very mint, bone stock condition. I want to sell that one (international buyers welcome)
Awesome
Low mileage? That is a brand new car
Annnnnd seeing this makes me mad why HONDA/ACURA didn't just TWEAK & REFINE THIS MASTERPIECE!! TOYO/LEXUS, NISSAN/INFINITI, MITSUBISHI all make mistakes by not keeping their most BELOVED CARS in the LOOP of LIFE
mmmmm love it!!!!!!
i wonder how tall he is to see if i would fit
6’3” 210lbs
@@TheHooniverse thank you , im 6'1 think i might get it for my first car.
Ain't a Tight Car. If it Ain't a Type R.
4700 miles? What
Thats why I never sold mine despite every family member and friend
Nice! I wish that I had held onto mine. I sold it to buy a BMW M3. I think it would be a great car to give to my son. He can appreciate the older JDM cars.
Nope I disagree I had both I love my S2000 over the Integra. It’s a special car but if you want the closest thing to a race car with a formula 1 history nostalgia feel it’s the S2000.
baaaaaaaaavtec.
Very Low km 4 million yen in Japan , $60000usd a rip off
Can't compare the S2000 to the ITR.
ITR>S2
I rather buy a cobalt ss supercharged 300 hp
Stage 1 MK7 GTI way better car.
1) you're comparing a modified car to a bone stock car.
and
2) LOL no... (Love the GTI, but no - the manual gearbox in those is mediocre at best and the clutch is a joke. Nicer interior though, but this Acura is from 2001 so that's not fair either.)
dean marriott 😂😂😂nah
@@TheHooniverse Stock vs stock 228 hp vs 195hp. Even a bone stock GTI will smoke a Integra type R. Clubsport S 1 minute faster than the integra on the Nürburgring ring. You are correct about the vw manual. DSG for the win.
Again, I feel like a little bit of straw grasping is going on here. The Integra is 12 years OLDER than the GTI (16 years, if we go back to the 97 Type R). It weighs 300 lbs less. And has *significantly* more feel to it. It's a far more entertaining machine to drive. And to factor in the Clubsport in the argument? That's a car that didn't come to the States so it doesn't work in this argument, because then we could add in all sorts of other front-drivers that weren't sold here.
Look, I love the GTI. It's an absolute blast. But driving this Type R is a revelation and the GTI may as well be a luxury car by comparison.
The GTI is great... but it's got NOTHING on the Type R.
@@TheHooniverse We disagree. Keep up the good reviews.
