    Hi Dev.
    The problem with any discard mechanics is that they do nothing once an opponent has no cards in hand.
    However, in current standard we have two engines that makes both us and our opponent do draw a card: Howling Golem and Kumena's Awakening. Both of these permanents make an opponent draw a card during our turn and that means they won't be able to play lands or non-instatnt spells before we make them discrad. And both of these cards fit into Grixis colors.

    For the sideboard of the budget deck consider phyrexian scriptures as another boardwipe. It’s a second turn board wipe yes but it buffs one of your points of damage and it will probably cause your opponent to hold back on playing out their hand, which is great for your discard package.

    I play a Black/Green discard deck that is similar to your mono black version only it involves holding discard cards and using green to ramp quickly into a spectre on turn 3, with an additional turn 3 1 drop like duress or viscous rumours. Normally (especially if you play first) you have the spectre down and you opponent still has a 4 or 5 card hand. If you manage to get a second spectre or raiders wake on T4, then you drain there hand with cheap cards, or 1 copy of “awaken the erstwhile” I’ve made my opponent discard 5 cards with Awaken many times, while having 4dmg per card punishment. That’s 20 life gone in one turn. I’m still working out the kinks against Aggro, but try it out it works surprisingly well.... Awaken the erstwhile replaces their hand with zombies on the field, but who cares if you use it to bring them down 16 or 20 health. 🤷‍♂️

      Also decks like mono blue or, izzet that utilize drawing cards are absolutely hilarious to play against. And even playing red has its perks (I’m looking at you risk factor) “heck yes I’ll let my opponent draw four card.... and then make him/her discard them”

    I’ve had a grixis discard deck on arena for a while and i love it. The idea i had for it was to get them to empty their hand as fast as possible and then have some counter spells to stop them from topdecking something. I play a lot of similar cards to your version too like the burn package. I have an idea i want to work on using more of a creature focused discard/control with cards like plaguecrafter, chupacabra, etc

    I have been playing a discard deck on arena grinding up to plat. It is pretty similar to your deck. Here is what I run.
    4x Thought Erasure
    4x Discovery/Dispersal
    2x Blink of an Eye
    2x Moment of craving
    2x Cast down
    4x Disinformation Campaign
    2x Bedevil
    2x Thief of Sanity
    4x Nicol Bolas
    1x Rekindling Pheonix
    3x Ritual of soot
    3x Angrath
    3x The Eldest Reborn
    This deck is really fun, and I would recommend trying it out sometime if you like!! Sideboard has a few more phoenix, more discard (duress), a couple negates for control, cry of the carnarium, and unmoored ego for the stupid nexus decks.

    • @jacobdachauer4377
      @jacobdachauer4377 5 років тому +1

      Pretty much what you would expect for a 3 color mana base.
      4x Watery Grave
      3x Blood Crypt
      3x Steam Vent
      4x Drowned Catacomb
      2x Dragonskull Summit
      2x Sulfur Falls
      1x Field of Ruin
      2x Swamp
      2x Island
      1x Mountain
      The field of ruin might be greedy, but I wanted at least 1 answer to a flipped Search for Azcanta. I have blink of an eye in the deck to help get rid of enchantments or other threats by bouncing it back to their hand (and drawing a card!), then using Angrath to make them discard it. Ritual of soot is really good right now. It gets almost every single card in Sultai, mono blue and aggro decks. I hope you play it an enjoy it!

    Discard, Mana burn and fog.
    But I have one addition to the competitive list:
    Elektrodominance! don't miss the opportunity to instant hit a bolas and 4 damage on the field and come the next turn with a flip of bolas out of nowhere. Banefire and elektrodom are enough with bedevil and bedeck/bedazzle u don't need more removal except boardwipe^^

    Ok so I tried running a discard deck similar to this on Arena, and I found that my opponent will have no cards in hand but will eventually start top decking and getting something amazing. And since they played the card, theres no more cards in hand, while I have nothing but discard spells in hand. I feel like running the shocks and lightning strikes are pretty essential.

    • @pyronicdesign
      @pyronicdesign 5 років тому +2

      Yeah, going all on on the discard plan is not a good idea without ways to deal with threats opponent's top deck or manage to get into play early on. Your best bet is to run a mono black control she'll with belz, eldest reborn, Karn, and treasure map. Play removal and sweepers and your side board should be all in on the discard plan to go up against control, and combo.
      For best of one run, burglar rats, duress, never happened, golden demise, murder, eldest reborn, your choice of bug flying threat...I run belzenlok. I run 3 cards each instead of 4 to fit in my discard plan. And about the only thing that I can beat is dimir torment decks...but if I was in best of three my deck ould wreck those decks because I could sideboard hard into the anti control game and then play their own win con out of their graveyard.

      Do you run the Rix Maadi? The more I play it, the better I come to love this card. It is a bit off topic, but I am looking to build a Rakkdos splash in red Aggro with it and Sovereign's Bite and the usual others. I think adding the extra draw and an extra damage spell with life gain will help out enough to put it over the top.

    • @Ceyx000
      @Ceyx000 5 років тому

      Yes. It's too slow against any mono color aggro, and never hits the board vs control, when & if it does resolve it gets taken Hostage.
      Great thing about the Megrim deck was The Rack (davriel), Megrim (fell specter/raiders wake), and ensnaring bridge (artifact, no comparison currently in standard).
      There's so many ways to make discard currently. I prefer B/W discard/prison, U/B , or Grixis.

  • @architectofdreams73
    @architectofdreams73 5 років тому

    The problem with discard strategies, especially in current standard is either there isnt enough discard to get the hand emptied early on or you have so much discard in order to have plenty early game that a lot of it becomes dead once they start top decking. I am not saying it isnt possibile, just generally a narrow plan that could go sour fast. But I do like the discard with maybe bounce to remove threats and discard both. One major issue is, most discard creatures are easy to kill or too expensive to matter. This is coming from someobe who played the old rack with spells like Hymn and Mind Twist

He most likely won't be able to afford a playset unless I removed all the Vampire Sovereigns and Urboros, but would there be any other cards in the deck which could make way for a RotG without severely gimping the flow? Otherwise, I'll probably just put in the one in place of a Sovereign.

    One of the first successful decks I had built when I started was a black/blue discard deck with Megrim and Cephalid Broker/Looters and a lot of counter and discard spells with Reminisce and was difficult to beat, especially with a turn 1 Megrim followed by a turn 2 Mind Rot. (I also ran 4 Dark Rituals in that deck.)
    I built a newer version of that deck that runs:
    4 Cephalid Looters
    4 Cephalid Brokers
    4 Fellspectres
    4 Megrims
    4 Raider's Wakes
    2 Reminisces
    2 Dark Rituals

      I have a mono black deck on Arena that does more removal and weenies that remove. It performs surprisingly well.

      So I guess it is weaker in Bo1 because you are more reactive than most other Magic Strategies.
      Also you need to know the threats of the ongoing rotation. Controll could be a bit trickier for new players.
      Games tend to be longer as a Controll Player and if you want to rank up fast it wont be with controll

      It's 3 mana for a pseudo-discard effect that does not even trigger discard since it exiles the card. It doesn't synergize with the budget that needs lots of discard and it is too bad of a card for the competitive one.
