I've never left a comment on a UA-cam video in my life. But you sir, have saved me. I've had hip pain for the past few years, had MRI's, was diagnosed with FAI and torn labrums, and have been considering surgery. Not once was Anterior Femoral Glide Syndrome ever so much as mentioned by any doctors. After viewing your hip videos, it led me to believe that is exactly the cause of my hip pain. Which led me to search for the syndrome and find multiple articles and success stories of people overcoming their hip pain due to AFGS. So from the bottom of heart, thank you. Without your video, I may have wound up having unsuccessful arthroscopic surgery and still be enduring the pain. I am just beginning my journey to recovery, but I am optimistic for the first time in 3 years.

This was amazing! I’m training for a 50k and had to stop running due to frontal hip pain. I’ve suspected hip impingement but couldn’t find help anywhere on the internet. You explained it all so well and made it understandable for me. This was really an answer to prayer. I just subscribed to your channel. Can’t wait to try these. Thank you so much!!!!!

I have had exactly the type of hip pain for exact 1 year now! I have been to countless different types of practitioners (MD's, PT's, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, etc), and have not found any relief whatsoever. I am becoming more and more discouraged, as my pain is increasing as time goes by. I am also experiencing pain in my knee now, as well (medial, front), and I can tell that it is not in the joint itself, but soft tissue. I am at a point now where I am in pain pretty much with any motion at all that involves flexion of the nip and knee (which is pretty much all movement!).
I will try these exercises and see if they help. Thank you for this!

Thank you for the information! I was a year-long athlete my whole life and had lapriscopic surgery when I was 21 to fix a badly thrashed labrum that occurred as a result of FAI. Four years later and it still hurts about the same. My doctor didn't give me much information beyond "don't flex your hip too much." and I never had time for PT. After initially not finding much information, I'm happy to finally see more on this issue. Especially good to know that I shouldn't do hip flexor stretches so much! I had the misconception that the pain was that "good pain" of stretching out tight muscles, but would always find it made things worse.
    Keep up the great work!

Holy crap!!!!! I haven't been able to squat for 8 months now because of horrible pinching pain at the front of the hip. I tried doing a squat after and while I still felt a minor pain it was no where near as bad/unbearable as it once was. I'm going to continue doing this because it was incredibly helpful. Thank you seriously

I have had this pain for probably well over a decade now, can't remember exactly when it started. I tried a lot of things to get rid of it and nothing worked, thought I was just stuck with it, nothing I could do. It hurt in my right hip every time I squatted but I could tough it until it started causing other injuries in that area, after several other attempts that failed, I have finally fixed it (the pain is now almost gone) and I did exactly what you showed here. So thank you very much, and I'd just like you to know that I prayed to God for this injury to heal :D

I just want to let you how helpful this video is. It improved my pain in the front side of my hip joint, which was not really diagnosed by several orthopedic and rehabilitation doctors. Even one physiotherapy clinic did figure out where my pain is from, they encouraged me to do stretches you mentioned in the end of your video, which made me even uncomfortable sometimes... I even comforted myself maybe the pain is a signal of getting better 😢.
Thank you so much for this video.

Definitely would appreciate more on the topic, especially how to distinguish it from tight hip flexors.
I haven't been able to squat comfortably for about a year and a half so I've been stretching anterior hip. But doing that test you show - going on all fours, crossing leg over and rocking back - give me that familiar pinching sensation. I also get it if I lie on my back, bring my knee up then let it fall in or out.
I did a pretty intense squatting program before this came on, so I suppose I fit the profile of active under 30 that you described.
Thanks for great content. Subbed and awaiting more :)

  • @Patrick33456

I've had issues squatting for the past 6 months or so and it's gotten very frustrating. I've tried a few things that didn't seem to work (much like how you explained static stretches may make things worse). I haven't tried this quite yet, but it makes perfect sense. When you explained the way the femur is supposed to glide back when moving the knee up, and how using the band will force the femur to the back of the hip socket... it's like my hip hurt less just thinking about that.
I haven't had pain in anything other than squats. I have two questions for you, 1) which resistance band is best for this (as I don't currently own one) and 2) Since Googling "Femoral Acetabular Impingement" it seems some people have very serious issues with this. At what point does this become a problem best fixed with surgery? I would assume I am no where near needing surgery, but it makes me worry a bit that I may have done too much damage to the hip joint.
Thanks so much for this video!

Hi Blake. Thanks for this video. This is exactly what I have struggled with for years. Been putting off a hip replacement with lots of exercises and swimming. I have told numerous PTs that I can be in so much pain that I can hardly walk.... Get down on my Rumble roller for 15 minutes and soften my groin and leg and stand up and walk with no pain. Not one person has mentioned this syndrome. Wow!! I felt better immediately. In the first exercise, how long should you stay with weight on the knee? No matter how much I try to strengthen my hip it makes it worse because it tightens up all the muscles again! Do you have any videos to help with strengthening once the hip gets back into position? Water exercises and swimming seems to help a lot, but its a very slow process. Thanks again!

I've been watching all of your videos for the past few months. They are extremely helpful! All of your corrective exercises are exactly that I need. I've had bad hamstring tendonosis for over 3 years. I've also had years of SI Joint pain. My physical therapist is helping with muscle imbalances (glutes, abs and adductors) but one area I can't seem to hack is my pelvic floor and obturator internus muscle. They get extremely tight and it is very painful. I can get the trigger points to release but it isn't a fun process. Can you do a video on how the pelvic floor muscles (levator ani, coccygeus, obturator internus) develop trigger points and which movements are involved that could be aggravating these? I'm not fully understanding how these muscles are recruited during movement. All the videos I find are on the surrounding muscles (SI Joint, hamstring, glutes, back, abs) but nothing directly about the pelvic floor is involved and how they connect to these other muscle groups. Some people have bladder issues but I'm lucking not to have that. Just pain. Thanks!

FAI can also be caused by calcium deposits that can prevent external or internal rotation. Also torn labrum can cause the pain in the hip flexor and groin area. I recently had a 3 hour surgery to repair FAI and torn labrum.

When I bring my knees straight to my chest I get pinching in my hips, but if I let the knees go wide the pinching goes away. I have strong glutes (I think! I work them a lot). Should I be worried about my hips?

Blake, thanks so much for this video, it's the best description of what's actually going on that I've seen. You mention activation exercises to Jonathan below, do you have a video on what those are? If it doesn't exist, you've my vote for a video demonstrating some more exercises for dealing with FAI. :)

Wow - that knee over the calf stretch feels so good... I can feel my glute medius throbbing with thanks when complete. I'm just recovering from an adductor tear, and now my legs are a bit out of whack where might right quads are always tight and overcompensating...

Daniel Dosen so the glute medius pain you would say is good ? Ive just done this for the first time after 18 months of back and hip pain and came across this.
Just finished, lay down and my left glute medius (painful side) is throbbing like crazy. Is this good ?

wow man this was amazing help and it provided relief if not fixed my issue in a matter of minutes! I appreciate this information so much, thanks. How often should I be doing these stretches? I felt it when I've been squatting so should I lay off squats for a while? thanks once again

+Jonathan Vogel Awesome to hear that man. I would do these daily and couple them with activation exercises so the femur doesn't glide forward as much. I should say daily until you don't need to do it anymore.

Thanks! I got 60% immediate relief from these exercises. And much more ease lifting my leg front side and back as well. I was wondering if this type of stretch could be applied to the arm-shoulder articulation. I am a ballet dancer and I have the same kind of pinching when I lift my arms above head keeping my shoulders down. Thx!

Try hanging 2 mins a day. It Sets maybe 30 sec at a time. Palms face away from you and just dead weight hangs.

hey first off thank you very much for all your hard work and videos. it's changing lives!
also I am wondering if tou could provide more cues for these exercises on form check. e.g. double chin, core tight, flat back ? also u have been reading activating adductors is the way to go for FAI so these muscles can start doing the work they have forgotten to do.... so activating abductors during these exercises as well ? thanks again and God bless

A lot of your videos have really helped. I have a ton of problems that I'm trying to work on. One that I haven't looked into doing anything about is patellar tracking disorder. Basically when my leg bends, there knee cap moves towards the right and downward, and my tibia then moves into the place where my knee cap should be. What are some things I can do to correct that?
Also, I severely sprained my ankle a year ago. I was playing tetherball, jumped up saved landed straight on the side of my ankle, nearly 90 degrees it felt. I continued to play, with some pain, but im so used to they other health problems I deal with daily that this didn't bother me much. However it's been as year now and I still have a sooner pain there and the able feels weaker, and I've noticed when using my TENS unit on my ankle, if I bend my for inwards. The electrical stimulation goes away and I no longer feel it, even on max settings. I only used max settings to see if it made a difference, I don't continuously use it on max settings.
Thank you for any and all help. I usually find a video of yours I need to watch and then find myself letting your videos run for a long time. Just trying to learn.

Thank you so much! I knew there was an impingement but did not know how to fix it. After doing exercises just once the pain is slightly less and range of motion is better. This will be part of my routine before working out. Is it possible to say what the average recovery time is?
