    Hi, I really wish you answer my question. I am ambitious to become a doctor. I had physics, chemistry and biology in my grade 11 and 12. I then did my bachelors in computer engineering (GPA: 3.75) and then did my masters in computer science(GPA: 3.25) . I now want to give MCAT and then apply for Doctor of Medicine in Canada. I would like to know if I am eligible to apply directly or any tips for me to become a doctor? TIA.

      Thank you, Aubrey! I agree. I appreciated the 99th percentile videos, but it just wasn’t realistic for me and where I was at. So I wanted to tell a different MCAT story that still had a great outcome and shows that the score is not the end all, be all 🙏🏽

    You are such an inspiration! your story is incredibly relatable and also a very real experience for some of us who aren’t where we want and need to be. I also scored 492 on a practice exam which was upsetting but also put me in the mindset of “well, it was expected for me to do poorly.” Love, this is giving me an immense amount of energy to get my unmotivated self up to prove that I can do it and more.

      I'm so glad that this resonated with you Jacklin! I feel it's important to share the lows with the highs. This process is not easy, and some of the videos on UA-cam make it appear as though it is. I wanted to share my story to show that this is the reality for some of us, but we can come out of it stronger! 💛

    Wow! I just came upon your video here and I am so grateful I did! The MCAT has been my biggest hurdle and I'll be taking it for the 5th time... not a number I'm proud of at all but I want to give it my all and am aiming for a 508! I never thought of utilizing all of the Khan academic videos. Do you recommend only just using them for content review or does reading things like Kaplan books help too? Thank you again and congrats! Also, what kinds of practice problems did you use? AAMC material or outside sources too?

    Hi! I’m currently a sophomore in undergrad in a 4+4 BS/DO program. I have to score a 500 to still qualify and remain in the program. My scores have to be submitted by December of my senior year, do you think if I start preparing in may of my junior year I’ll be okay? I’m not a good test taker either and am worried I’m going to have to retake it a couple times. Is there anything I can do a year before to start preparing?

I enrolled in the Princeton review course for the spring semester as well and also will be solely dedicating my time to just Mcat studying during the spring. I’m kind of stuck on how to create my own study plan. I feel like it will take me forever to go through khan and Princeton review books since the books are so lengthy. I was thinking to use Princeton for practice questions and use khan solely for content because I like the way khan teaches content. How many months did you spent on just content review? If possible do you have an email I can contact?

    I come from a non-traditional degree in Biomedical Engineering. The MCAT wasn't that hard for me but my degree did help me out overall by being prepared for the math and hard sciences stuff. I did My tissue engineering courses help me out too. I struggled with chemistry but all in all, I got a 509 with a 2.95 GPA in BME which is what got me in due to having such a hard degree program.

      Hi Jariatuuu! So on average, I would watch about 5-10 videos a day (but this varied depending on the topic and how comfortable I was with it - if I knew it better, I'd do more and go through it faster). It took me about 1.5-2 months to get through Khan Academy working at a full-time pace.

      @thejuliacarter  3 роки тому

      Great question! My last practice test score was a 507, and my actual score was a 509. So I remember being happy that I scored higher (and it was predictive/in the same range).

    • @karamtahera4339
      @karamtahera4339 3 роки тому

      Good I've been recognizing a pattern that most people score within few points from the last fl which is good because it's my highest. Another question tho, did you feel you did as good as you did on the fl's or you felt like you bombed the test like many others but who ended up scoring well? My test is literally in few days and wanna be prepared for this mentally and not lose my confidence during the test lol!

  • @fk4866
    @fk4866 4 роки тому

    A 509 is a great score I'm proud of you. But to my fellow asians, a 509 will not get you a full ride ;-; our average is 514 so you'll need like a 519 to get a shot at a full ride

    • @thejuliacarter
      @thejuliacarter  3 роки тому +12

      Ehhh I'm going to disagree with you on that. I had a lot of qualifications and strong components to my application outside of my MCAT that made me a competitive applicant. So the same can be applied to others regardless of race.
      Additionally, a full scholarship isn't always purely academic. I expressed a strong interest in community service, staying at my institution for my training, possibly becoming faculty, etc. which is highly favored at institutions (retaining a student through to residency and faculty).

    • @fk4866
      @fk4866 3 роки тому

      @@thejuliacarter I never said that you weren't qualified, it's just that our MCAT averages are different that's it. It's true our average for MD is a 514, getting a 514 would be the average and wouldn't merit a FULL scholarship majority of the time. There's no denying that there are different averages for every race, it doesn't mean that person isn't qualified. There's just different standards. I could have 2000 hours of community service, but GPA and MCAT is really important for med schools, and with a 509 I'd be 5 points below the average.

    • @idasukar5701
      @idasukar5701 3 роки тому +4

      @@fk4866 I think I would disagree as well. The only average that truly matters is based on admission rates. While a 514 might be the average for Asians, it is still nationally recognized as the 90th percentile. A 509 puts Julia in the 77th percentile, which is really amazing. While GPA and MCAT are very important, there are other core values that admissions look for. I would definitely take a look at AAMC's core competencies, it is a really great resource for applicants! Having a 509, a strong interest in medicine and a range of meaningful extracurricular activities is more than enough to receive a scholarship, regardless of race. Great job Julia! You are an inspiration, thank you so much for your videos. :)

    • @fk4866
      @fk4866 3 роки тому

      I clearly said that she should be proud of her 509 that there wasn’t anything wrong with it. I directed my comments towards asians saying the AVG for asians it’s a 514. Which means it’s harder for asians to get merit scholarships if the avg for them is 514 in the first place. I never said anything was wrong with her score or anything. I understand MCAT isn’t the only merit, but when it’s being used asians are held to the 514 standard that’s all I’m saying. Why is it that if I bring up asians that you’re assuming I’m putting her down?

    • @thejuliacarter
      @thejuliacarter  3 роки тому +10

      Regardless of me personally and my journey, I still disagree. Across the board. I don’t think you are putting me down, I just do not think your statements are valid advice. As Ida said, you are not judged by your racial group and the average MCAT for that group. Everyone is judged on a standardized scale, hence the purpose of the test, regardless of what Blacks, Asians, Latinos, etc. score on average in their racial group.
      I do not think it is wise to advise students that their race’s average MCAT score is the benchmark and standard. That is simply not true, and I have worked with admissions to know that this is not true. Additionally, as I stated, many scholarships are awarded to individuals for various reasons. I just want to ensure that students who may be reading the comments are appropriately informed.
