All those years and I still love this video. I hope life is treating you with the same care you lavish on the music you used to play. We will never meet, but, for the little it's worth, know this: you have made an enormous difference in my life. Thank you so very much.
Every once in a while i have to listen to this, then the original, then this one again; then the original turned up really loud... her vibrato and picking makes this really unique while faithful to the original; killer.
Great job. Not only did you find one of the most significant blues songs of that generation - you sang the hell out of it. Geeshie would be proud. Hell, I'm proud.
Absolutely gorgeous! I don't think there is anyone else out there today who could capture the haunting beauty of that song as well as you. I also love your skip james and robert wilkins covers. With great admiration and appreciation, Ami, Israel.

I’ve watched 7,237 videos on UA-cam. This is the best one. The original recording, by Geechie Wiley, is absolutely stunning. Although I’d respect somebody who didn’t like it, I’d be dumbfounded. Anyway, IPlayBanjoNow’s (IPBN’s) rendition takes the wind out of me. I play guitar. I sing. I love acoustic blues. But THIS video is a masterpiece. IPBN’s rendition shakes me, to my core. I'm so glad that a younger, modern woman is honoring someone of a past generation. You are so cool! I'm just watching your finger picking and hearing your absolutely brilliant singing. Love your.
This is the first of your videos that I found. I've watched most of the others by now and they're all great, but I keep coming back to this one. If I listen to it in the morning, the tune stays in my head all day. You are a rare talent !
Thank you so much for recording this! Probably like a lot of people, the first time I heard this song was in the movie Crumb, and it left me stunned. I assumed it would have to remain a reproduction from a scratchy 78 but you brought it back to life.
I have been a fan of this song for 25 years now after getting the Crumb soundtrack. All those years I thought she said she went to the Devil. Now I know she said depot.
My word! Tripped over this, and geez, am I impressed! What is better than a beautiful woman that has a beautiful voice AND plays guitar as beautifully? I wish you lived next door!

Very nice guitar and vocal work. I'm a decent guitarist myself, and I'm here to say that this song is harder to play than I first thought. The guitar alone is not terribly difficult....until you try to sing it too. That's where this lady's skill becomes evident. Perfect voice for the material also. She understands the blues.
This is my answer to the SolarYT comment as I had some time to waist for a free session on reality: ............... Very nice guitar and vocal work. Wow! You are very sad and very sick. You have made your bed in hate and victimhood. I hope you get better. None of us save for a very few, very old people can have an idea of what it was like to live when these old blues were written.
Really fantastic, the guitar playing was really spot on and I just learned the guitar parts watching this but don't worry, after hearing you sing this there's no way I or anyone else can do as well as you did, you singing was beautiful and eerie at the same time and I declare this a masterpiece, have seen you do good things before but this is on another level. Geeshie was brilliant but she would have deeply approved of this I feel.
Brilliant cover as good as Geeshies and she gets the words right. Most people sing I can stand right here and see my lover on the other side, not what Geeshie sang that is I can see my face on the other side. The emphasis of this is crucial to the song.......she can see her ghost on the other side
It's always awesome to see people reviving these somewhat obscure old weird dark blues songs. Blues has been stereotyped and radiofied just like every other genre, people need to go back and discover what a varied, thoughtful, complex, and strange genre it can be. Great rendition btw!
know that song by a robert crumb documentary, now looked for it here and i stumbled bout you vid. as a german this song touches me because of our history which is a sad chapter. that very nice played, touching! lovely greez from germany. florian
Do you know her? I've been coming back to her videos many times in the past few years and I've been wondering why she hasn't uploaded anything. Hope she is well.
Her singing and playing are perfect, her phrasing is impeccable and completely natural. And so, in the authentic tradition of the blues singer, she came out of nowhere, recorded a few gems on YT, and vanished without a trace. I believe there were rumors that she had sold her soul to the devil. Little is known about her. She leaves her legion fans hungry for more, but it is not to be.
@@Barthali also very much in the tradition of old blues singers! I'm friends with her on Facebook and she's witty, funny, politically astute, and seems very uninterested in even discussing music anymore. Definitely an interesting person!

This is the best cover of this song I've ever heard. It's amazing. It's sad this channel seems dead. So much talent.
Joker
She captures the essence of the original. Overlay a scratchy 78rpm effect and it's suddenly 1927 all over again. So good.
Absolutely haunting! I hope you are well wherever this finds you

Lyrics:
The last kind words my daddy said to me
Lord, the last kind words my daddy said to me
If I die, if I die in the German war
I want you to send my body, send it to my mother, Lord
If I get killed, if I get killed, dont you bury my soul
I prefer you leave me out, let the buzzards eat me whole
When you see me comin', cross the rich man's field
If I don't bring you flour, Im gonna bring you bolted meal
I went to the depot, I looked up at the sun
Cried some train don't come, gonna be some walkin' done
The last word mama told me, just before she died
Lord, precious daughter, don't you be so wild
The Mississippi river, you know it's deep and wide
I can stand right here, see my babe on the other side
What you do to me baby, it never gets outta me
I hope to see you when I cross that deep blue sea
Christine, where are you these days? I would buy EVERYTHING you record. You are an amazing talent, I am totally hooked on the way you sing and play.
This is a staggeringly good cover !
Thanks to Ami in Israel for suggesting this song to Christine. You were right, Ami.
If I could play this well, I wouldn't bother doing my ironing either.
she's so good
in fact..... she's so good, i'd be happy to do her laundry :)
She was just about to do that. She only picked up the guitar for a second, and hours later she finally put it back down lol
hahahahaha! nice bants Aron
I was going to say a true artist doesn't care if there is bulshit in the background
Baffling how somebody could cover this classic so amazingly. Kudos! Kudos.
Your playing is not only expert but soulful. Wonderful.
You never fudge your way like many on utube who try to play beyond their ability.Very precise and beautifully timed with, voice to match.

Damn this is good!
Often the most talented are also the most tortured.
That music must be almost a century old. Listening and watching was eerie. I wonder what Geeshie would think.
That's great, Geeshie could never have imagined it would live on like this. Hope you're still playing and singing somewhere.
This is wonderful, so moving. Thank you kindly.
Excellent, best cover ive heard of this, true to the original, heavy.
Girl, you had me in tears!!! Your voice and playing of that song, is haunting and beautiful. God bless, You!
So stunning. So heartbreaking performance. You are a true Artist. Thanks for keeping this song alive.

It is wonderful to hear this unforgettable song in a fine clear tone.

Came across this tune while watching the documentary Crumb. It instantly made an impression. Love your version of it.
Why did you stop uploading? You're great
This amazing player captures the essence of the blues better than anyone else that I have heard, both porch picker and professional.

so rich and worthwhile.....should be the number one song in the nation

Oh Sister Where Art Thou? What an amazing vibe captured here. I love it.
The best thing about your cover is you captured the spirit and emotions of Wiley's song.
