Sexual Abuse & Binge Eating Disorder
Sadly, it is estimated that over half of all people struggling with binge eating disorder and related weight issues have a history of childhood sexual abuse! And while this early life experience can be incredibly traumatic to a child's emotional development, unfortunately this is an element of chronic eating and weight issues that is often not discussed. Consequently, many survivors of abuse who also struggle with binge eating and related weight issues feel incredibly ashamed of their bodies, and have little understanding of how their past influences their life today.
In this episode of WeighOut Wednesday, the co-founder of TheHealthyWeighOut, Dr. Ashley Southard, delicately tackles this very sensitive-in-nature and oh-so-important issue afflicting so many people struggling with binge eating and chronic weight issues. This is the first in a series of 5 episodes, so be sure to check out the subsequent episodes for a "deeper dive" into this issue.

I think it is far more than 1/3 in the eating disorder community.

Why does it have to childhood sexual abuse? People of any age can be sexually abused and can have same or worse impact.

If there’s a connection between childhood sexual abuse and BED, then can BED start when you’re younger? Or is it usually later on in life when you develop BED?

BED can start at any age. Children and teens can certainly struggle with BED. For others, food may be used for emotional comfort in childhood and this behavior doesn't turn into full BED until some time in adulthood. It all depends on the person.
