Sky Exchange, Project Ozone (which I was a reason why a the antibuilder reward was removed in PO2 since I found a overpowered block dupe glitch), I think it also inspired Compact Claustrophobia, FTB Infinity Evolved Skyblock, the entire thing of Ex Nihilio, but yeah.
I think everyone that sees this should have a look at slamacow's animation and a story in the comment section, it's really wholesome. Edit: the comments were disabled so I'm gonna have to explain what the story was. So basically a guy saw this animation many years ago without knowing what skyblock was so this was his first time hearing about it. the version of skyblock I enjoy the most is skyblock with modpacks(either custom made modpack or public available ones like SkyFactory), it (in my opinion) makes skyblock more enjoyable without it being too grindy well, hammering stones for gravels to sieve for iron is still pretty grindy
i think the ones with quest books really help give people direction with the mods, and the minimalist nature of skyblock means less distractions and more learning
One thing I think you missed is the influence on modded mc of Skyblock. If you look into it is is absolutely insane how much of modded is based off Skyblock
Skyblock is really an interesting mode, the ultimate survival challenge. And the many ways it can be modified is another thing that makes it really popular. I have a skyblock world that I kind of gave up on midway through :P Maybe I’ll get the new updated version or try one of the “mods” when I have time.
Don't forget about the endless branch modpacks that were inspired by this, such as, but not limited to, the Skyfactory series. I am inclined to agree that Skyblock was a huge step forward in the modded minecraft community.
I think skyblock is almost certainly the most recognisable map in the game. It's actually really fun, especially because you need conserved resources. I'm bad at it tho. Nice video.
Perhaps I should try Skyblock some time myself, being someone who is just awestruck with new Minecraft generation Also History of Modded Minecraft when
I remember watching Skyblock gameplay years ago and even now I could've never imagined someone would come up with an idea as insane as that. Because Minecraft is a game with endless things that can be created it's no wonder that it's still alive and active even now from way back then.
Can't believe how Skyblock went from 100 to 0 real quick then went back to 100 again, I think this happened in other minecraft related things, This just goes to show that some things truly never dies, It just waits for the right person to make it great again
Man, whenever I see your videos I read the title, pause the video, thumbs up and end up in a buttload of nostalgia that leads me to writing a comment like this one. Most of them I delete because its a long text of, well, nonsense, let's see how this one ends up xD I think when I first heard of Skyblock, it was pretty much when the Minecraft hype died down for me personally. I've played a ton of Singleplayer, ton of Multiplayer, and Mods (not to speak of Modpacks, which were just starting off or not even, I think) were a pain in the ass because every week a new patch would break them. Then you had to re-install them, just to figure out which of the mods you wanted causes your game to crash and why you can't open some chests any more (despite all the mods working again). When I first saw Skyblock it was the most idiotic thing I've seen in a while. Minecraft, the game about creating an infinite (well, to the eyes of most players), randomly formed and creative (in the sense of creativity) world, you dumb it down to a small island of what, 30 blocks and a tree? Due to the hype I gave it an extensive try and I had a lot of fun, but I gotta say that's also where it stops. Maybe 1-2 hours and that was it. The issue being of course that all you could do was generate cobblestone, have grass (and animals), as well as wood and planks. That's it. Later editions would have chests and more islands, as well as nether access, but in that version it was only the island. Nothing else. Edit: OMG you just caused a waterfall of even more nostalgia after showing the book of achievements you should aim for when playing, I totally forgot about that (and as it seems also some other details wrong lol, cut me some slack, it was 10 years ago :D) Edit End. Then I played one of my first modpacks. I don't remember what it was called, but it used a block where you could load in any item. Each item had an EMC value, and you could exchange it with other items. Every item's value was highly different, so e.g. a cobblestone has the value of 1, a wood block the value of 4, a piston the value of 60 and so on (made up numbers, just to explain). I got in touch with mods I never used before, not even in the first modpack I played (which I think was called FTB lite or so, there was a super popular modpack but it had too many mods for my shitty laptop to handle. The lite version of it worked though), and it was so exciting to farm freaking cobblestone. I mean you would end up automatically creating and inserting the stuff eventually, but its very interesting how quickly I'd get bored to mine cobblestone in normal skyblock or heck, even vanilla Minecraft, and there it's a ton of fun because it allows you to progress. It's grinding for better stuff. I don't remember how that modpack ended for me, I only remember it was a ton of joy. After that, I got a modpack called I think SkyCraft or SkyFactory or so. I always confuse them and either say Sky Factory and it was Sky Craft, or Sky Craft never existed and I do mean Sky Factory. That one I think also used EMC as main resource, but it was a lot more crazy and fun. Man, I can't believe how much time I spent in this game. And how nearly every video you make brings up a ton of nostalgic feelings in me. That game for sure has several ten thousand hours on my record. And all began when I saw a random video of someone placing down redstone torches in a super weird pattern I didn't understand. I thought it was a lego game and they never appealed to me, but watching that video brought up a German UA-camr for me, named Gronkh, who made an insanely epic and super long Minecraft series (1275 episodes in the first, main one) starting in October 2010. After seeing an episode of his, I got hooked and wanted to buy the game, but I couldn't. The purchase required a credit card or paypal (I think at least), but I was 16 so PayPal was no option, and in my country (Germany) credit cards are very uncommon, debit cards are the normal thing. And asking my father to buy a computer game for me, I could have also asked him to buy me an island lol, despite it costing only what was it, $7 at that time? So I had to pirate the game and would start uploading Lets Plays in German around January 2011 (its easy to remember for me, since it was the end of winter holidays and it was after getting together with my first girlfriend, which was in August 2010), had a ton of fun in content creation but a ton of no-fun with UA-cams monetization and copyright issues. Either way, a subscriber noticed I had the pirated version, and he gifted me a key. When he bought the game he bought it for 2 people and had 1 leftover. So for over 10 years I am using the key he gave me, bless him. And now you might understand why I often delete these instead, I talked about a ton of things and then started talking about whatever my brain thought of next lol
You totally missed the modded variations on Skyblock like Feed the Beast and SkyFactory. Feed the Beast came out very soon after the original Skyblock and has a rich history that has developed in parallel with everything mentioned in this video.
FTB Sky Odyssey is still my favorite Skyblock mod-pack. A combination of the challenging aspect of Skyblock slowly turning into modded madness over time. And seriously fun even the tenth time you restart it.
Back in the day I played on a classic skyblock server that was, admittedly P2W. Hell it was even taken down after it became "victim" of the 1.9 server blacklist. However, it had one really cool feature. Remember all those challenges included with the original map? Well this server had a plugin that would detect if you had completed a challenge (some from the OG, some added by the admins) and would reward you with more materials and things if you'd done it. I think that quest idea works really well on the classic map.
I remember playing Hypixel Skyblock for the entirety of august in 2019, it was grindy and fun, but i burnt out of it. I've heard that Hypixel wasn't doing very good before skyblock, and the beta of skyblock saved the server even
The fact that Stampy and Sqaishey made a series on a sky block map "Sky Den" and recently finished their 4th series "Space Den". At the beginning of "Sky Den" they weren't even together yet and at the end of "Space Den" they've been married for over two years. You can see their relationship form and thrive throughout Sky Den, Cave Den, Ocean Den and Space Den
Something I find fascinating about videos like this is it really highlights the different ecosystems within the minecraft community and what they see as significant/well known. I play more in the single player modded space, so all this talk of servers, PvP, gamemodes, minigames.. just not part of my community. For me, Skyblock is what started Feed the Beast, which became such a goliath in the modding community.
I used to play on the skyblock server in 2015, it was a great community to be a part of. I went back to the server in 2017 or 2018, they had a new skyblock mode and no one played on the original anymore. It was great to see how the original skyblock had not changed much over all those years and people still loved it.
Skyblock was so Simple yet was a perfect creation. I still remember Watching captain sparkles first episodes of Skyblock. Slamacow, egganimation, all those Minecraft animation UA-camrs, really caught my interest to keep playing Minecraft until now.
I'd love a video talking about specifically the modded side of Skyblock since it takes the "Complete a task list" aspect and runs wild with it. Not to mention the amount of crazy things mods allow like with Crash Landing where despite not technically being a Skyblock the way it was designed was that there was only a small space you could start out in or die to the environment. Plus the nature of modded can allow for Skyblock to start from a single block. In my opinion Modded Skyblock is where Skyblock can be taken to it's true limits.
I played for years on a Skyblock server called Sweeping Skyblock, probably spent more time playing that than vanilla honestly. It’s the reason I love making huge farms and other technical stuff today. Skyblock will always hold a place near and dear to my heart
It's my favorite game mode for years now. I really like the early game resource management in Minecraft, and Skyblock actually ensures this in a challengeful way almost the whole time, especially in order to build bigger projects. Also, you're learning a lot about the game mechanic through this.
The worse thing in the history of skyblock is really that not that much knows the original creator of the map he should be put in the minecraft hall of fame for creating his legendary and well know map.
An other thing to mention is than skyblock went beyond minecraft, some other games also gained their own version of skyblock, such as terraria that feature both skyblock and one block skyblock.
As mentioned by others. Skyblock still dominates the nodded minecraft scene. There are different spins such as stone block and ocean block along with some where you are in a dessert and die of thirst that type of thing
I kind of wish you had touched on modded Skyblock. I know it's not really part of the history of Skyblock, but a lot additions to mods really enhanced the challenge. One of the highlights was Agrarian Skies and how it took advantage of two new mods: Ex Nihilo (literally from nothing) which allowed people to create more dirt from composting and ores and such from cobble plus HQM (Hardcore Questing Mode) which led to an explosion of questing modpacks. At its most extreme, modded Skyblock allows a player to obtain nearly everything from a single tree and dirt block in a void (even accessing the End, with the right balance and mods) or obtain everything from a patch of dirt and some roots (like Garden of Glass with Botania).
My favourite challenge in Skyblock has always been trying to collect everything. In the original map, there's no structures, so trying to obtain everything comes from really hard thinking, exploration within the boundaries and being creative. For example: you can obtain copper by building a giant water cube in a river biome for drowned to spawn.
Stuff like Skyblock keeps my hopes up for the future of gaming. It's just like the Team Fortress of my day, someone creates essentially a mod for a game that's so innovative, it spawns an entire culture around it. Kinda like Skyblock, and how it spawned Skywars.
The thing I like most about Skyblocks myself is that you can completely control where mobs spawn. So if you're careful, you could literally make mobs either a non-issue or a farmable resource.
I actually learned so much while playing skyblock. My friends often comment on how I magically survive and magically know so much about spawning mechanics and trading.
I don't really comment a lot usually, you can look at my comments if you don't believe me, but I just wanted to say: Thank you! I love your videos, even if I know most of the stuff already, great voice and style of telling/editing :)
I have two Skyblock servers going, one for Bedrock Edition and one for Java Edition. Needless to say the whole challenge is quite fun, even to this day.
Skyblock is also the basis for bedwars, the difference being your skyblock now has a bed that you must defend because it is your respawn beacon. Skywars was great fun, but bedwars was a great evolution on the game imo.
Something to note about Hypixel Skyblock is the new gamemode now in alpha, called stranded. It takes the new features of HPSB and trpas you alone on your island just like normal skyblock. As a long time player of HPSB, it's incredibly refreshing to see both it and standard skyblock remixed like this and I love it immensely already.
I created a Skyblock map. I like to try and make the most possibilities with the least amount of starting items. With a blaze dust and a brewing stand (or 2 blaze rods) added to vanilla Skyblock, I think villagers could be obtained. Witches drop sugar, spider eyes and apples are common, a brown mushroom is needed, gold might be harder to obtain, but could slowly be obtained from older drowned drops or smelting gold swords and armor. I also enjoy trying to survive the various infinite snapshot worlds.
I recently started hypixel Skyblock and holy is it filled with stuff, it's been over 3 months now and I'm pretty sure I have not even gone thru half of it. I wud really suggest y'all to play it once, it is a bit confusing in the start but it really gets fun
does anyone remember a skyblock server that I joined in like 2015, where there were lots of different areas to hang out in at the spawn point such as an airplane and a place where people held skin competitions, as well as plots in a superflat world where you could build stuff? It honestly feels like a fever dream but I remember hanging out on that server all the time and I haven't been able to find it or remember the IP. It also had an area where you could kill mobs for XP and an area to kill animals for resources. I have so many fond memories of playing on that server and I want to find it again so bad 😭
all i gotta say is thatt TwoAwesomeGamer's series on skyblock was truly the most special minecraft series on youtube to me, and hopefully many others. that's all.
I thought I knew everything about skyblock. Until scicraft decided to do a series and expanded my knowledge not only on skyblock but minecraft mechanics in general
Really interesting. So far I almost exclusivly, watched German Minecraft content. So the Skyblock projects I know are Minecraft Aura and Minecraft Sky. Its cool to see, how much bigger the community is, and maybe I manage to digg into it a bit.
I can remember watching videos of modded skyblock a loooong time ago and it was certainly something else. It was really funny how materials were spawned from basically nothing by converting blocks into others through multiple interlocking systems one could build towards. I think turning leaves into strings and gravel into ores was a thing? I can't quite remember.
This is inane! Skyblock changed the game probably more than anything else that didn't come officially from Mojang. And man you didn't even start talking about how skyblock influenced modpacks aswell 😄
Okay, for a long time I thought this guy was just one of those sellout story channels for Minecraft, but after watching a lot of his videos.... I have changed my mind. This guy is just one of the older members of the community who may have been too young to tell all these stories at the time but needless to say he was there with us.
im pretty sure this has been said a few times already but SkyFactory was one of my favorite parts of my 12 year minecraft experience. SkyFactory was the best modpack ive played hands-down. I havent played in over a year so when i get back on i hope i can find skyfactory updated to a more recent version. 🙏🙏

It was great to see how the original skyblock had not changed much over all those years and people still loved it.
"I think Skyblock at its core is the ultimate challenge in resource management."
"You spawn on a tiny island in an empty universe."
Great title! Very intriguing! Also, once again a phenomenal vid, keep it up!
This is an interesting video. Skyblock is one of my favorite minecraft maps. My favorite skyblock challenge i'v seen is the scicraft one.
I'm surprised ender plays wasn't included in this, he has the oldest hardcore skyblock world (around 3800 days)
The worse thing in the history of skyblock is really that not that much knows the original creator of the map he should be put in the minecraft hall of fame for creating his legendary and well know map.
As someone who absolutely at every type of Minecraft Skyblock, this was a amazing video!
Howd you pump out quality content so fast?!
Amazing work as always
I really appreciate that you use the old textures in your videos!
My first addiction was Hypixel Skyblock, I can't get those hours back.
The best part in skyblock is getting your first sapling from a tree (:
And having to resort to a backup if you don't get it. ;-)
Even with skyblock, you have endless possibilities
An other thing to mention is than skyblock went beyond minecraft, some other games also gained their own version of skyblock, such as terraria that feature both skyblock and one block skyblock.
Anyone who remembers TAG's Skyblock series?
Legendary.
Skyblock is the most nostalgic thing for me. Played it ~2014-2015 when I was like 9 and had so much fun with everyone on there
One of my favourite long term worlds was actually a skyblock. I love micromanaging and building farms.
I actually learned so much while playing skyblock. My friends often comment on how I magically survive and magically know so much about spawning mechanics and trading.
Damn so glad to hear the full story of the amazing Skyblock and skywar
I don't really comment a lot usually, you can look at my comments if you don't believe me, but I just wanted to say: Thank you! I love your videos, even if I know most of the stuff already, great voice and style of telling/editing :)
Thank you!
I have two Skyblock servers going, one for Bedrock Edition and one for Java Edition. Needless to say the whole challenge is quite fun, even to this day.
10:32 Also dont forget about ProtoSky, started with one sapling and one dirt (with one water)
Finally got to watch this video, amazing one as usual MrEpic
Skyblock is also the basis for bedwars, the difference being your skyblock now has a bed that you must defend because it is your respawn beacon. Skywars was great fun, but bedwars was a great evolution on the game imo.
Congrats on 300k subs, a well earned achievement
Nice video! This definitely puts a lot of context behind popular pvp gamemodes.
And what wasn't mentioned is modded skyblock, playing modpacks like sky factory is another amazing take on sky block!
I loved skyblock ever since it existed and I still love it more than normal Minecraft.
I love skyblock, I’ve already fallen into to the void of hypixel skyblock addiction too.
I remember remaking Skyblock map, god the nostalgia
My favorite is the unusual skyblock,it’s amazing
What a coincidence: I was just making my own sky block map today.
I recently started hypixel Skyblock and holy is it filled with stuff, it's been over 3 months now and I'm pretty sure I have not even gone thru half of it. I wud really suggest y'all to play it once, it is a bit confusing in the start but it really gets fun
I never did fully play skyblock till the end. I should give it a try again
does anyone remember a skyblock server that I joined in like 2015, where there were lots of different areas to hang out in at the spawn point such as an airplane and a place where people held skin competitions, as well as plots in a superflat world where you could build stuff? It honestly feels like a fever dream but I remember hanging out on that server all the time and I haven't been able to find it or remember the IP. It also had an area where you could kill mobs for XP and an area to kill animals for resources. I have so many fond memories of playing on that server and I want to find it again so bad 😭
Is it possible to make a video talking about that "spiral parkour" map? the one with the big tower... I just enjoy it so much :)
all i gotta say is thatt TwoAwesomeGamer's series on skyblock was truly the most special minecraft series on youtube to me, and hopefully many others. that's all.
I thought I knew everything about skyblock. Until scicraft decided to do a series and expanded my knowledge not only on skyblock but minecraft mechanics in general
SkyBlock really was the first of its kinf
MisterEpic is a skywars god, legit did you see him win a match, with only leather armor O_O
Hahahaha, was my first game in a while as well!
@@TheMisterEpic hold on checking all your other vids, too see if you have skywars clips :P
@@TheMisterEpic you said" in a while " not ever, :/
Skyblock has made my childhood
Really interesting. So far I almost exclusivly, watched German Minecraft content. So the Skyblock projects I know are Minecraft Aura and Minecraft Sky.
Its cool to see, how much bigger the community is, and maybe I manage to digg into it a bit.
This is the first time I actually subscribed when a video asked me to LOL. cant believe you got the man himself to shout you out.
Shoutout from the Captain! Let's go!
I think at its core, sky lock is the ultimate challenge in resource management
The dark period one was basically skyblock EA edition.
