Matt Mercer's Blood Domain Cleric - Dungeons and Dragons

Everyone else: "Bloodbending is evil"
Me: "I'll be a doctor"
You just made my next character.
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
SKULLS FOR THE SKULL GOD!
Skulls for the Skull throne
Thrones for the ... throne god?
@@TitanGamingTV MILK FOR THE KHORNE FLAKES!
Wonder if Mercer created this after that encounter with Delilah Briarwood when Keyleth tried to control her body through the water within her
We may never know :) It is a good question though.
Mercer be like: "Wtf, my fiance just tried to blood bend."
I wsnt to know if that's true. You should tweet him. IIRC both Matt & Marisha are bith Avatar TLAB fans. So Blood Bender seems pot on as an inspiration too.
probably.
This is such a cool archetype! I LOVE that you're covering supplemental material outside of Wizards of the Coast as well, to help expose those things that really deserve it. Great video!
There's a lot of good stuff out there outside of WOTC material. Gotta showcase it when I can find it :)
If you're interested, I wrote some fighter archetypes and fighting styles for a new dark fantasy novel coming out this month. The document is free for download. I talked about it on my channel, here: ua-cam.com/video/5vcl9N-k_20/v-deo.html

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD, SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!
Oh yes... there will be blood!
MILK FOR THE KHORNEFLAKES!
I'm excited that my DM has officially added this to our world. One note on their alignment, though. The blood clerics and bloodhunters (which I am) are the two main classes of the Claret Order. This order is established in secrecy to combat the monstrosities and entities that regular men can not. While governments tend to not shed light on them and their use, sort of like the CIA, they're not necessarily bad. Questionable and functioning in the Grey, certainly, but it does not have to be an evil inclined PC.
Thanks Lee! How's that blood hunter treating you?
Titan Bear Gaming so far, so good. Level 7 possibly bordering 8 after a huge battle the party had with a Black Knight and Vecna clan. It's certainly a great blend between melee and spells, which bring up the challenging balance aspects. You need to keep track of what type of damage is best for each scenario, as well as if you can afford sacrifice your life to rite your weapons. But when it works, it can deal quite a bit of damage.
grey... like a certain... warden.
Both Knowledge and Trickery clerics also gain additional Channel Divinity options at 6th level.
Thanks Christian -- War Domain also makes the list with extra CD options :)
Bloody good Cleric domain :D
Nyuk nyuk. Too right though, this one has some strength.
Glad you are back to making videos. Your informative reviews and cheerful disposition are always welcome.
Happy to be back, Tosh! Thanks for the kind words :)
Man I've been thinking of a concept like this for a Sorcerous Origin for ages now! Glad to see it come to the cleric though, super creepy role play you could do with that one
Maximum creepiness here. Maybe you could borrow some mechanics for your Sorc Origin :)
At first, I thought 2d6 for the Vascular Corruption Aura was low, but given that it affects any and all creatures within range with NO saving throw means it never gets halved unless the creatures have resistance to necrotic damage. 10 rounds, no saving throw, and no concentration makes 2d6 powerful enough for my table.
Thats true about the lack of saving throw, Jacob, good point. Plus keeping the base damage down at 2d6 allows for other spells/abilities to augment the damage without becoming impractical.
I think the main kick is the "non concentration" aspect of this... this means you can pair it with spirit guardians to deal tons of over time damage.
Also, the "half healing" is epic against enemies with high regeneration, which can often be found at higher levels (especially with homebrew monsters i noticed, maybe bc in 3.5 high CR monsters used to more or less all have rapid healing/regeneration).
Against vampires for example, this is very good (although probably at that level you will have free access to Sunbeam-type magic
So glad to see you posting!!! Don't stop Titan Bear
Can't stop won't stop baby.
If you wanna go at least neutral with this class to better fit in your more classical, heroic campaign, I could imagine having this cleric essentially defect from a classical church and lend their aid to one of the blood hunter orders perhaps even serving a a bit of a mentor for another blood hunter in the party. There are monsters in this world willing to spill the blood of the innocent and you would rather spill your own with sacrilege magic than see those monsters get their way.
Easiest way from there is to then homebrew a god (I'm partial to the name the Blood Lord, God of Sacrifice and Kinship) that wouldn't oppose to such methods, but in Exandria or any setting using the Dawn War pantheon, that might easily be the Raven Queen.
Nice suggestions PPH :)
I really like your suggestion to ! And it would be fun to see your character develop from neutral to good too, it would make for a good story
In addition to the Knowledge Domain's two unique channel divinity options, the Trickery and War domains each give two Channel Divinity options in addition to Turn Undead. Trickery gives Invoke Duplicity (illusory duplicate of self as an action) and Cloak of Shadows (Invisibility spell until end of next turn without concentration as an action), while War gives Guided Strike (+10 to an attack roll you make) and War God's Blessing (+10 to an attack roll of a creature within 30 feet as a reaction).
I really wanna see more of these CR class archetypes! Like the Runechild Origins for the Sorcerer, or the Maestro College for the Bards! I *really* wanna play a Runechild
I'll be covering those two after the Campaign Setting! Stay tuned :)
What if CR did a one shot where each chose one of Mercer's archetypes
They could call themselves the Mercernaries
Awesome! So glad we got this video, I’ve been waiting for some critical role content to be shown on Titan Bear! Keep it up!
Thanks pal -- there's more to come.
And here I've been trying to figure out the next villain for my players... this is perfect *evil dm laugh*
I'm right there with you. Lots of great villainous ideas from folks in the comments and on Discord. Booomb thematic element here.
This is also perfect for my group since they're the ones who got me this book for Christmas. I think it'd be a nice treat/surprise in the middle of the game to pull out the book to reference what this villain is going to do to them.
Totally :)
I think 2d6 is enough to be honest as like you said it's free damage but also it's meant to be used against multiple opponents so that's damage, for free, against several enemies for 10 rounds. That's quite powerful just in itself
On Discord someone made the point, too, that since there's no 'save for half' aspect, its the free-est straight-est up damage around.
Yeah I think it's a great ability and I might roll up a character of this class to try it out for myself
Two years too late but I’ve been looking for the perfect domain for my Lizardfolk Cleric and everything didn’t seem to fit that primal Mesoamerican feel the death domain was too edgelord for me but this domain right here is perfect for my True neutral lizardfolk. Thank you for explaining it and thank you Matt for coming up with this domain
Matt Mercer has been playing to much Bloodborne or something haha. At least two of the Homebrew classes he's made recently are blood related
Maybe he doesnt get enough kills on Critical Role, and his thirst needs to be slaked.
Blood hunter is Witcher, but bloodborne i guess has a similar setting
gzerox2 he has stated that the class is based off of both the blood hunters from bloodbourne and off of Witcher’s. The mutation school is obviously Witcher’s, however the Lycan school is clearly bloodbourne. I love the class overall, especially the mutation school!
Alex Lanning Matt is very open with his appreciation for the Witcher series and as a big fan of the Witcher series myself I totally dig the blood hunter class and like the thematic elements of the blood domain amd slow, haste, and hold person are fantastic additions to a clerics arsenal.
For anyone who doesn't know, he's got a fun hot pepper gaming review of Bloodborne!
Just like any archetype in 5e you can spin it to make it whatever alignment or character type you wish. There is only one archetype that I feel is extremely hard to spin as good in any way shape or form and that is conquest paladin.
Yeah that one has a pretty strongly asserted 'oppression' theme. Hard to spin that one positively :P
Whenever I think of a Conquest paladin, I think that they can be neutral or evil, but not good. A character that seeks to protect their homeland by eviscerating his foes can be lawful neutral, but certainly not good.
You could possibly spin it as an oppression of evil. The only way to defeat evil is to bend to to your whim or something similar
Oppression of Evil just makes you a different kind of Evil. That being said dousing the flames of hope... hope isn't so much the fuel of Evil really to begin with.
Benjamin Frost yeah I forgot about the tenants when I made that comment
Blood Cleric: we aren’t really “good” people.
Me, with a history of atheist clerics: Hold my beer
Something for everyone here!
Hahahahahahaha my current Cleric, is Chaotic Neutral, but he's eventually turn Chaotic Evil, and multiclass into a Warlock.....lol
I’ve been trying to think of a way to make a blood-based magic class and I think I’ll definitely just stick with this LOL.
Thanks for covering it!
You're welcome! It's a good one.
Thanks for the overview! As a note, Trickery Domain actually also gains another Channel Divinity option at 6th level.
A friend of mine is playing a Tabaxi Blood Cleric in an upcoming campaign. He was inspired by the blood magic that the Canim people use in Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera series. I’m looking forward to how this class works in practice!
Excellent -- I'm actually unfamiliar with the Codex Alera series (I've heard of Jim Butcher though). What are the Canim people like?
Coming here in 2021, Right now in their Critical Role Campaign, they have exactly that as one of the NPC's. A Tabaxi Blood Cleric.
I see Matt Mercer and Tal'Dorei I click Like immediately!!
Don't we all :}
Sesimie StreetFighter why?
@@elgatochurro why not? Matt is amazing, as a person, and a dm
I could never say no to a new cleric domain. They're too useful for reskinned and multi classed npcs.
You got that right Hodge. Clerics occupy a practical niche in the dnd multiverse, ubiquitous and illustrative about how the world's religious practices operate. Blood benders cannot be taken lightly :P
well, that seems like a bloody good book! ;)
Nyuk nyuk. There are more videos to come -- there's a lot to like in here.
I’m currently playing 3 different Dhampir blood clerics in 3 different games (one homebrew campaign and two games of adventurer’s guild, a customised less restrictive adventurer’s league), having tons of fun playing them all. One worships Asmodeus, one worships the raven queen, another worships Canchelsis the vampire god from Spelljammer. They’re all lawful neutral to lawful evil so they’re still willing to do good things but they’re not necessarily good people, only doing those good thing if they and their gods can benefit.

Titan Bear Gaming I just came down here because I heard you say discord and I was going to ask if you had a channel - you've read my mind!
Just one correction: the knowledge, trickery and war domains all get 2 channel divinity options (one at 2nd level and one at 6th level). So the Blood Cleric isn't the only one with 2 options.
I was coming back to this video (I watched it yesterday) to make note of this. *high five*
Actually several of the Cleric domains have multiple Channel Divinity options, specifically the Knowledge, Trickery & War domain.
Ah good point out Erratication. Plus the CD options in those domains are actually pretty good no less :)
I think that you could take the damage die up to at least 4d10 since that seems more align with 17th level damage.
And the potential for a villain is pretty good since I could see a Blood Cleric acting as a priest to a deity such as Lolth or the Chained Oblivion. With the group having to stop them from using their power to sacrifice a village or town to their deity and use this as an opportunity to raise themselves in their gods favor to becoming equivalent to a demigod of sorts.
Well 4d10 damage for 1 minute ends up being like 40d10 damage in total which even at 17th level is a bit too much
When creating my character, my DM and I had an interesting conversation about how a blood domain cleric and follower of the RQ will go around resurrecting a fallen ally since resurrection is a huge no-no for the RQ. I can’t wait to play my cleric and see how it will affect her and how she’ll be treated!
Excellent -- a lot of RQ followers for this one :)
2d6 for 10 rounds of 30ft = 20d6 for potential of 120 passive damage on top of anything you do. That quiet a bit
I'm definitely going to subscribe.
Great to hear it Ben! Welcome to the party.
Titan Bear Gaming I am just so freaking loving your mood. Like yes yes please 😂
I would say this might be a great domain for the Blood of Vol for Eberron.
Very fitting, Nick!
When I was making my blood domain cleric my dm gave me a list of deity’s and there was a gem which was a god that’s all about protecting allies and bringing absolute death to enemies and collecting their blood as tribute to protect their allies hence Good alignment
That definitely delivers. Love it.
You got a link to this list? I wanna make a travelling doctor who wants to improve blood magic's reputation
@@OgunTheShogun ow I’m sorry but that dm was fully homebrew. I never got to learn who was in the gem fully. But from what I gathered it was a bloodthirsty angel who was trapped in the gem by an arch devil. He said the idea was a good aligned levistus
The Channel divinity is great to use on enimes but also on downed allies who you can get out of reach of enemies and then use healing word on them.
I'm thinking of making a Half-Orc Blood domain Cleric whose turned to a blood god for insight on healing and treating disease.
technically war domain clerics get an additional channel divinity where they can give a +10 bonus to hit a creature to someone else instead of just themselves.
trickery domain has a channel divinity at level 2, and one at level 6. So it's not the only one with 3 options
WoW !!! i see Matt and click fast like light, great video, insta sub :3
Welcome to the adventuring party Mariana! We're happy to have you!
Brooo so my dm pulled a fast one on me and tricked my light cleric into becoming a blood cleric, but I'm super excited to play as it and it'll create a very interesting story arc for my character
what happens when a spell like spike growth deals damage while you have bloodletting focus? each time spike growth procs, you get the extra damage?
I would say yes, each time the damage procs add the extra damage. I realize this adds a good deal to the final output of the spell -- but the spell doesn't exactly do a whole lot in the first place :-P At worst, you tune the damage back to once a round per target, and at best it encourages people to use some of the less popular spells.
i mean, spike growth is one of my favorite spells to begin with.. thanks for your input!
Then you should be real happy with the damage boosty :)
I'm about to play my first game as a Blood cleric.. a scysophrinic triton named Corus.. whenever I cast a spell that involves the dead I lose control.. should be fun
Rock that Triton!
This is really convertible to pathfinder, except for a few spells but those can be swapped pretty easily, nice :D
Compatibility is always a good thing. You looking forward to the PF-2 playtest later this year, Gameipedia? You know we're going to be getting copies in the store :)
Knowledge domain has two channel divinity as well.
Knew someone would find one. Good catch Conrad.
Titan Bear Gaming I mean to be fair they get one at 6th level as their second one. So it’s kind of bad.
Wtf I was thinking of making a sorcerer exactly like this for months
Someone else said that too! Maybe you can use this as a guideline!
Blood Hunter vs Blood Domain Cleric
can you do one on the way of the cobalt soul for monks? it's pretty bomb and i haven't seen anyone doing a video on it yet
It's on deck! It'll be out in a few days :)
awesome! my next character a cobalt soul monk who got her training in the library of alexandria and i was hoping to get some more information before rolling for her stats
Hey welcome back, I love to see the blood cleric getting some love.
How would you rule a blood cleric using hex? Would it proc on every hit?
My personal ruling would be yes, proc on every hit. 1d6+3 damage on every hit is quite good for a level 1 spell, but it still requires concentration AND landing weapon attacks to be productive. There's an argument to be made in both directions, though.
From the other perspective, a DM could say that the spell needs to deal damage directly at the time of casting to qualify. "When you use a spell ... to inflict damage" could be interpreted to mean that. My advice? If its in debate, try the direction that errs in favor of the player, and then back-off if it feels too strong in practice.
Never be afraid to experiment, especially when it creates fun.
Titan Bear Gaming Roger that time to use a 5th level warlock slot with hexblade curse for some stupid strong eldritch blasts
4d10+4d6+72? Seems good
Definitely good.
Thezerowulf can you explain this build for a newer player? Earlier in the comments I said I'm going to be playing a Blood of Vol cleric and I really love warlocks.
Deiby Barrientos absolutely go 3blood cleric/hex blade warlockX then you grab agonizing blast invocation and get charisma to 20. With hexblade curse level5 hex spell at level 17 you will reach that 4d10+4d6+72 damage. You can also cast spiritual weapon for An additional 2d8+14-18 damage.
All my tabletop bloodtinge fantasies are now reality
For the Vascular corruption aura I would put 2d8 rather than 3d6 because with the other effects, I would consider 3d6 to be a little OP
So, yay or nay... The Gentleman is a Blood Domain Cleric, Water Genasi?
This class makes me think of the Flagellant from Darkest Dungeon
Oo I'm not familiar -- what are they about?
Well, irl a flagellant is someone that scourges or whips themselves to enforce religious discipline and expunge sin. In game the flagellant can heal stress from your party via self inflicted damage. It's slightly different but this cleric domain could be flavored as one
Where can I find this? I've been looking for some time and can't seem to find it.
We have a couple more copies for sale at www.titanbeargaming.com.
www.titanbeargaming.com/products/critical-role-taldorei-campaign-setting
Blood Puppet makes me think of Nightmare on Elm Street 3
Wonder if anyone here might have a bit of advice. I’m likely going to be running Curse of Strahd soon and one of my players had expressed some interest in playing a blood cleric (we’re all big CR fans) how would people rule on the blood clerics abilities working on undead? I have no personal experience with them yet and given how prevalent undead are in that setting I wouldn’t want them feeling less useful when facing vampire spawn, Strahd himself etc
I know it's late, but... as a cleric, you now has an excuse to let the rogue go down, then bring him back up with a bonus action... after having used his body as your weapon of choice xP
SPOILER FOR CRITICAL ROLE CAMPAIGN 2 EPISODE 14:
When the party had their blood taken, could the npc had been a blood cleric?
Almost undoubtedly :)
That sounds awesome
Wait, is The Gentleman a Blood Domain Cleric? (Collection of a sample of blood)
I believe the Gentleman has a Blood Cleric in his employ -- I forget the fellow's name, but it was the one who recognized Molly as "Lucian" if that sounds familiar?
I think it was the creepy gnome not the tabaxi
Are you planning in doing one for gunslinger and Cobalt soul?
Yes and Yes. They're too good to miss!
Miss you
Makes me wanna try a Blood Domain"Fallen" Asimar. =p They have Resistance to Necrotic? Go for my "Blood Tap" to recover some spells. That wasn't so bad. *snickers*
Muhuhuhaha. Muhuhuhahahaha. Muuuuhuahaha!
Nifty on how I pull off an interesting RP concept to combine with a pretty potentially potent mechanical combo?
Who else is here after last night's episode!
Talk about timing :)
Is this for 5e adventure league
It counts as 3rd party material, so not legal for 5e AL alas.
A vampire cleric with the Blood domain!
Run with it!
The blood aura just kinda seems like a worse version of spirit guardians
I like this channel, you got yourself a subscriber
Thanks Seba! Welcome to the party!
It reminds me more about Hidan from Naruto
Whys he coming up with the edgiest sounding classes lmao
Niiiice
is it just me or does his facial expressions feel very flirty?
Wait, so molly's class was blood hunter because of his past (lucien) and his friend which he did not remember resembles this class (the channel divinity thing). What if they have a huge connection to the story of the m9? (Or idk maybe matt will cut it because molly died)
Ps. Sorry for spoiling
Also this class and warlocks are why we need alignment restrictions for classes. I had a two hour argument with my player that he was evil for having a pact with a fiend.
Nicholas Dryden yeah, but how can you worship a fiend and get powers from a fiend and serve a fiend and still be good?
I heard ghost rider, but ghost rider is either evil, or he is written as having to constantly run away from the devil. I think e was written just good once, but he wasn’t fully good then either. Unless the punisher is good
It’s like cleric who worships a good God being evil. Why would that God let him serve?
I didn’t agree with the older editions that spells should be restricted. Nor do I think every class should be restricted.
I think barbarians can have two alignments. I think druids can be good or evil.
I think there are different types of Paladins. I think there rogues can be good.
But if you worship and an evil or good god or have made a deal with them. Your alignment is severely restricted.
Plus then you have players argue with you saying, “it’s not in the rules that I have to be blank alignment. You are rail roading me”
Nicholas Dryden I mean I get the argument that if one has a restriction why don’t they all? And I can understand why they have it in the book, but it should be stated as optional rules. And suggested for those optional rules. That way there is a middle ground.
Though I can see why people don’t want restrictions. Not all tables or played want lore immersion
Pacts are not worship. People make pacts to gain power or to save others in danger. Sometimes pacts are formed through manipulation and force. Just because the warlock formed a pact doesn't mean he likes his patron. It is a relationship based on power and greed, and manipulation. Clerical relationships are based on trust and prayer. Two very different things. Also I wouldn't hold him to evil until he makes evil actions. And Ghost Rider isn't evil. He is somewhere between neutral and neutral good. Alignment can be a sticky subject so it's best to use it as a loose guideline. There are many characters in fiction whom have grayed/mixed alignment.
A pact could be forced or coerced... just because it's the source of one's power doesn't mean they're pleased with their patron. It's possible that a character doesn't realize the nature of the being they made the pact with, or made the pact at a moment of extreme crisis when they needed the power to save someone close to them. So there's certainly ways that the alignment shouldn't be forced. Of course, if your player was playing someone with a positive relation with a fiendish patron then yeah, I see where you might be coming from
Sajan Patel ghost rider burns souls and send them to hell. Not good. At best neutra. Unless you consider punisher good. If punisher is good then so is ghost rider. But sending someone to be internally tortured and burning their souls is not good.
A devil and fiend are not going to be tricked by a level 1 character
Which means no level 20 character will have 20 levels in warlock pact of the fiend unless they are giving the fiend something they want. So what do they want? Anything good? Nope. There is no way a fiend wants something good in return. He may want you to kill all goo characters. Sacrifice children. Burn villages down. Cause destruction. Corrupt souls. There are plenty of thing but you are asking for power and I return ylu have to do something they want.
Great old ones and get will be wildly unpredictable but all the players hand book warlocks will outright kill you if you disobey. Or if you tricked them then they will also kill you. There is no way you can be a good warlock
Also selfish, power hungry and manipulative is objectively evil according to the book
