Oh Eren & Mikasa. I remember sawano explaining how he made the song thinking about where the relationship between Eren & Mikasa. This song is really about Eren & Mikasa's feelings for each other and their dream of having that home together. Eren's dream all the way in Ch 1 that we finally saw in Ch 138.

@Noob S. Eren saw the ‘see you later’ in his dream, which she said in her dream and in reality. It was overlapped, that’s the point. I think the theory above being a shared paths dream is a good idea. It’s their deepest desires. Eren would want to go and ‘fuck Mikasa for four years’, but he’d never Be able to. His duty comes before his wants, so while it is something that they both want, it’s not something that could ever happen, and that’s the tragedy of it.
“She lost her brother a month ago.” In the OVA ‘Lost Girls’, there’s like this butterfly effect. And it shows Mikasa and Eren meeting eachother in an alternate timeline in which the robbers didn’t kill Mikasa’s parents. In this OVA, it’s revealed that Mikasa’s mom was pregnant with her brother, and she lost him too when her parents were murdered.
“She said she gave all her love to me.” This is Mikasa’s unconditional love, care and deep feelings for Eren. I think this specifically relates to that one scene in season 2 episode 12, where Mikasa shares her feelings with Eren before he awakens the coordinate power and of course all the moments she’s protected him. The scene in that episode is the first moment where Eren truly realizes the depth and truth of Mikasa’s feelings for him. He realizes that she gave him all her love and honors her feelings by promising to wrap that scarf around her (which I think is symbolic of or alluding to the ‘red string of fate’ ). Instead of admitting loss giving in to despair and death by giving Mikasa a kiss goodbye in what would be there last moments, Eren chooses to make a hopeful promise instead.
“We dreamt a new life/house, a place to be at peace.” I think this relates to the time loop thing that happened in the Lost Girls OVA 3 and Chapter 138. In chapter 138, Mikasa is in some sort of alternate reality with Eren in which they ran away to be together and live the rest of Eren’s years as peacefully as possible. In the OVA, Mikasa wished to have a peaceful existence with Eren, and one in which he could be safe. Towards the end of the OVA, a masked man tells her ‘that Eren carries death within him’ and that Mikasa ‘will never be able to keep him safe, so she should get out of this dream/reality’ or something among those lines. So Mikasa literally ‘dreamed a new life, a place to be at peace’. This lyric also connects to to season 1 episode 6. After Eren rescued Mikasa, he wrapped the scarf around her and said “Let’s go, to our home.” And Mikasa found new family, home and life in Eren and the Yeagers.
“But things changed suddenly, I lost my dreams in the disaster.” This could be talking about when Eren lost his mom, when he lost Hannes, when Shiganshina fell, when he found out about Annie, Reiner & Bertholdt, when he realized the truth of Marley and beyond the sea and many more moments. Eren even says when they reach the sea, how disappointed he was, and how different and much more brutal the world was than his dreams. Things continue to change, and the peace that was longed for is perpetually out of their grasp.
“And I got no power I’m standing alone.” Eren stands alone in the decisions and choices that he makes to protect and ensure the freedom of his friends and those he cares about.
“Oh, where is my lover?...Missing my lover.” I think this could relate to both Mikasa and Eren and what they’re both feeling as the war and violence rages on. Although they both have deep feelings for each other, (whether romantic, platonic, emotional, etc)- the love and peace that they desire isn’t able to occur/coexist with the violence that’s going on.
“I don’t have power on my side forever.” The curse of Ymir.
“All I know is my life is gone.” I think this is describing how Mikasa must feel after killing Eren (which must have seriously pained her to do and made her feel conflicted). Although she did what she believed was right, and what she thought would set Eren free- she still loves him and was so devoted to him. So, I think she would feel pretty empty, meaningless and purposeless after killing Eren, someone who she shared such a deep bond with.
Furthermore, this song closely mirrors Mikasa’s song to Eren “No Matter Where You Are”.

Thank you for this, you explained it so well. I think the crazy thing is that we all had our theories of these songs before ch. 138. People associated it with so many characters like Levi, Grisha, Bertholt exc. but only now do we realise that it was actually about Eren and Mikasa all along.

Worst choice of words for the ending, even if if the 139 is bad, Isayama could have end it with the opposite "you are free" and bird eren removing the scarf. As it is, Mikasa will just be a slave to a dead, never finding happiness. It is sad, her story is ruined, as is Historia's and Eren's.

Based on what we saw of her during the 139 chapters, I would say there is better a chance she becomes a depressed widow than a happy wife for Jean or whoever manages to make her forget Eren. Imo, with that ending, she will be a slave to the love of Eren for ever, like, a girl caused all this shit just by staying in love with her abuser for 2000s years, how is that impossible to predict the same for Mikasa?

CHAPTER 139 SPOILER ALERT
Yeah from the ending it definitely is. But I wish they developed or at least showed eren's feelings for mikasa a little bit more. A lot of people were disappointed with the ending because eren's confession seems like it came out of nowhere and just felt out of character. I myself can deeply emphatize with mikasa's feelings but not eren's because of that reason
@@nikewalker96 this is what is beautiful and cruel about Issayama's work : the only time his characters get to confess there feelings is when it's too late. Grief is somewhat pain caused by losing someone you love, you care about. It is through grief that love is explored throughout this manga. This is why it makes love one of the main thematic of this manga. They mourn their lost comrades, lost loved ones, their lost families...
because "this world is cruel" and because eren "was born into this world", he could feel only pain and resentment. There were no occasion for the characters to really confess their love for each other, live happily and all, because they were soldiers and warriors on duty, at war. They only had few peaceful moments
@@AR_198 but we still get character moments that show they have feelings for each other like mikasa for eren, ymir & reiner for historia, bertholdt for annie, armin and annie for each other. These moments serves for a build up of the relationships between these characters but we dont get that with eren. Throughout season 1-4 we dont see eren explicitly showing his feelings for mikasa not even through internal monologue like we got with reiner. Some eremika shippers will argue otherwise but they also tend to ignore the times where eren was kinda shitty towards mikasa and pushes her away a lot
@@nikewalker96 it was subtil. Eren acted like a kid throughout all the manga. But read again the panels and try to analyse eren's attitude and the way things are set. For example, when Mikasa "confesses" her feeling to eren (dina titan), she doesn't say "eren, I love you" and, when he gets up he says "I would wrap this scarf around your neck as many time as you need".
By the end of the manga, we understand why he rejected everyone, and why he was that cruel toward Mikasa and armin (because they were the closest to him, and he cared about them very much, but needed them away: the more you love, the more you hate. And since eren hated that much titans and all, its because in the balance he lost people he loved and care about).
If you read the panel from when eren and zeke are in the path (I don't know how they translated it for you), issayama set a certain way eren watching his younger self giving Mikasa his scarf...
They were few signs like that...
And if I read correctly the last chapter, he also said "i want her to only love me, live for me like she's always done" something like that. How childish and eren like. But he never said he "loved her".
Eren is extremely immature at every level trough the manga, it's only by the end with his sacrifice and he is honest towards his feelings, he admits them, that he becomes a man.
And as for the other characters, it is as I said. When they get to confess their feelings, it is already too late. And the "I want to mary her" run-in gag is just a run-in gag
@@AR_198 the words he said with the scarf can easily be interpreted as him caring for her and wanting to protect her just like everbody else around her. This is what I'm talking about. His actions that showed he "loved" her are not really indicative of him having feelings for her moreso that he cares for her as family/wating to protect her like him wanting to protect everyone. That's why I say eren's confession felt out of place. Through the events of season 1-3 we are shown eren ignoring mikasa's attempt to kiss him, getting angry at mikasa overprotectiveness of him, basically just ignoring the clear sign of her feelings for him. This was all before he kissed historia's hand and saw the future and decided to push everyone away. His actions before kissing historia's hand had never shown that he had special feelings for mikasa. That's why a lot of the fanbase thought eremika shippers were delusional. Eren and mikasa relationship was shown to be one sided with mikasa the one in love while eren is oblivious to it or just ignoring it. If you say eren cares for mikasa like his own family sure that I can agree with. His actions in earlier seasons has shown how much he cared about the people around him, mikasa included and how much he wants to protect everyone. I don't mind eren and mikasa ending up together as I feel like mikasa deserves to be happy but I wish they have developed the relationship far better to make eren's confession more believable

@BlaZe Excalibur I agree, that's what I got really in chapter 138. Eren doesn't need to erase Mikasa's memories since if this theory is real, then Mikasa would've understood in the span of 4 years living together.
Although one wrinkle is why Eren was weak in the "last moments" between Mikasa and him. Maybe it was to convince Mikasa that his death can't be escaped, whether it's from the curse of ymir or her blade.
So after showing Mikasa what would've happened in those times, Mikasa said "see you later, Eren" and went back to reality to kill him. And I think that's how Mikasa knew Eren was in the mouth instead of the nape.

I agree. And when I’m reading the Manga I do notice Isayama seems to draw Mikasa even more beautifully from Eren’s point of view. We don’t always know what Eren is thinking or feeling, he can be kind of a mystery box. But I’ve always believed he loved her

He mentions even if Armin didnt come stop him he doesn't know if he'd stop. He rejected Mikasas feelings for the reason he chose the battle of freedom over a life of comfort. However yeah sure that can be argued but more so then anything he wanted freedom until the end and he chose the path for freedom. Always has, If you remember the dream in season one when Armin tries to wake Eren up. Eren erupts his comfort in flames and chooses the fight for freedom. A example of him going from the want of freedom for the want of Mikasas cooch would be him giving up on the rumbling before hand and confessing his love for Mikasa. He still choose to wipe out hummanity and to die by the hands of his freinds. Throwing away his perosnal wants. The statement that he completely changed at the end as far as his end game goals go is just wrong evident from the story. That aside I think there are other valid criticisms and I respect others who didnt like the ending.

What he character showed up until this point is that he hated what humanity was doing all this two millennia since Ymir turned into a titan. He saw no real safe place for him and his friends to live their lives at peace, and his conclusion to this was "I'll just wipe out everything". Kinda like in a cathartic way. "I'm so done with this shit I'll just kill every fucking one."
In 139, however, he reveals he just did it so his friends could live longer and could find peace with whatever's left of the world. And acted like a pathetic child about his feelings on Mikasa, which I'm not sold on this
Guess I just liked his character more when he was an apathetic piece of shit.
