If the virgins who had oil represented a portion of the church members -- and they declared that they had not enough oil for themselves and for those who did not have...
Everything that Christ and the gospel teaches us...is to give and to love and to save...Everything. Why then would this parable be the exception? Perhaps Christ was testing his disciples to see if they were actually paying attention or just going along with whatever he said.
    Mark 10
"42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:
44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."
What manner of men ought we to be?!
    "Even as I AM."
    🙏🕊✌☮☯️
    From Mark 12:
"Which is the first commandment of all?
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with ALL thy ❤ (not just 10%), and with ALL thy soul (not just 10%), and with ALL thy mind (not just 10%), and with ALL thy strength (not just 10%): this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is NONE other commandment greater than these.
32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
33 And to love him with all the ❤, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, IS MORE THAN ALL whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God ("psst Now you're getting it!"). And no man after that durst ask him any question."
And Christ signals is disciples to come over to observe the treasury with him, and illustrates watching,
"how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in ALL that she had, even ALL her living."
Who among us would be willing to tell her that she's misunderstood, crazy, and not able to take care of herself now, let alone take care of others because of what she's done? That she's now become a burden on everyone else?
Who among us would be willing to share with her that she wasn't really supposed to take Christ seriously when he preached,
"31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."?
Love Him with ALL our heart??
My friends... may we remember, "where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
I will be there to give of my oil to those who want it 😌 afterall...the ones who asked for it -- wanted to be at the wedding feast. They wouldn't have shown up of they didn't have that desire.
We have oil to give. We ARE the oil keepers, makers, and sellers but at what price do we withhold it from those willing to acquire it? If oil was replaced with "light" or "life"... then he teaches us the entire gospel to let it shine for others and to give one's life for the benefit of others.
If all things are spiritual (D&C 29)... then mosiah 4 teaches us:
"And now, if God, who has created you, on whom you are dependent for your lives and for all that ye have and are, doth grant unto you whatsoever ye ask that is right, in faith, believing that ye shall receive, O then, how ye ought to impart of the substance that ye have one to another.
22 And if ye judge the man who putteth up his petition to you for your substance that he perish not, and condemn him, how much more just will be your condemnation for withholding your substance, which doth not belong to you but to God, to whom also your life belongeth; and yet ye put up no petition, nor repent of the thing which thou hast done.
23 I say unto you, wo be unto that man, for his substance shall perish with him; and now, I say these things unto those who are rich as pertaining to the things of this world.
24 And again, I say unto the poor, ye who have not and yet have sufficient, that ye remain from day to day; I mean all you who deny the beggar, because ye have not; I would that ye say in your hearts that: I give not because I have not, but if I had I would give.
25 And now, if ye say this in your hearts ye remain guiltless, otherwise ye are condemned; and your condemnation is just for ye covet that which ye have not received."

Totally agree that we have so much we can give. I think this parable is only to let us know in the end, when we are at the final accounting there will not be time to repent quickly or change or be the person we which we were. This life is a time to prepare to meet God. And personally I’m grateful everyday that I have just a bit more time to get it right and be better. It’s such a long journey for so many of us. It’s why I love Groundhog Day, it’s a big parable that God gives us time to learn it’s not about us.

The oil represents faith and testimony. You can't fill your lamp with borrowed oil and expect it to lead you to salvation. You need your own faith and testimony in order to be saved. We can share our testimonies with others, and we can share the gospel in hopes that the other person will grow. But in the end, faith is a choice, and each individual is responsible for making sure his or her own lamp is full. I can't give someone my faith or testimony anymore than I could give them the skills I've learned. I can teach, but they have to learn and apply it for it to do them any good.

@@BeadBlossom why did the others say they could buy faith and testimony? We know that's not true either. And from shopkeepers who sell it?! Certainly it appears easily transferable, no?
Isn't what we do in the temple sharing the "oil" we've obtained with those who aren't able to without us, by proxy? And yet even without a body and having accepted the gospel...there's not much to build a testimony off of at that point from the mortal experience.

    • @BeadBlossom
      @BeadBlossom Рік тому +6

@@j.e.9017 No one said they could buy faith and testimony. The women went to buy oil because that's how one would acquire oil. That is the literal meaning, which should not be confused with the spiritual meaning. Jesus wasn't just making up random stories when he taught. He used cultural norms from the time and applied spiritual concepts based on what principle he was trying to teach. That way they would make sense to those he was teaching. I don't believe this parable was meant to teach us how to acquire faith, but rather to explain why we need our own and that we should be doing everything we can to gain a testimony now so we are prepared.
That's not how I see temple work. Missionary work continues in the next life, and will until Judgement Day. Those who did not get the opportunity to learn while here on earth are being taught now by those who did. They do get to build their own testimony. But, just because they are dead, that doesn't mean they do not still have agency. We do the ordinance, but they get to choose whether or not to accept it. We aren't giving them our oil. We are providing an opportunity for them to be baptized or sealed to their families. They still need their own faith.
