Edwin “Win” Butler III is the lead vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter for Canadian band Arcade Fire. Known for their symphonic pop-dance-rock-noise arrangements, surrealist music arena performances and a savvy approach to the music industry, Arcade Fire have received several Juno and Brit awards.
In his 2016 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler talked about his roots, the band's discography, New Orleans and David Bowie.

The interviewer here deserves major props. He's asking really well thought out questions and is clearly a huge fan of the bands music.
Dude, he never even asked about the recording process of Funeral lol Yeah great
In fact he wasn't that good.
Booooo
Seriously. I agree. Superb interviewer.
what an interesting and kind man, i was so shocked at how he welcomed everyone to montreal at the start of the interview and offered everyone a montreal pass if they ran into trouble. my heart is warm.
I'm currently living my adolescent years in Suburb Houston, 1 hour from The Woodlands. This band just hit me so hard....
I Love Win Butler.
Turns out I guess I don't...
He has beautiful hips
@@SteBrazier2K9 lmao he does?
Not as much as I do
I'm from The Woodlands too and was in Will's grade. I remember his mom coming to our school to play harp.
This interviewer is one of the best interviewers I’ve ever heard
I love watching him tease Everything Now so early
So early? It came out that year lol
This interviewer really is top notch. He obviously is really dedicated to his work and wants the artists to feel like he knows them and their work. Makes Win feel very comfortable right away. What an awesome channel! Thanks for this. I am a really big fan of AF
i feel like it would be easy to get nervous interviewing a guy like Win Butler. He's non-chalant about it, but his intensity is not something you want to get tangled up in.
Well put!
damn that death star question was so unexpected
Alex Minassian I expect it now 😄
I thought you were trolling... but damn! :D :D :D
Lol
...and answered with candor, intelligence, and brilliant diplomacy. Butler 2024!
I remember seeing King Family specials on TV when I was a kid. Yes, I'm old.
Win looks like his grandfather Alvino Rey.
Hes a Genuis. To get accepted into Phillips Exeter you have to be a child genius with pure A+ 😭
I love you Win Butler.
Very informative insight into my favourite band, and the magnificent album Funeral.
Foreshadowed infinite content!!!
I just adore him and Arcade Fire
This is great
Such a great interview! Thank you
Are the parts where they listen to the songs available somwhere? I'm curious seeing Win listening to his own music. Great Interview! Great Interviewer!
You found the parts yet mate??
@@acc2876 no he passed away sadly 😢
@@scienceseason7059 Wait, seriously? You know the dude or are you just making a weird joke? Sad if it's true.
@@SnakesNSquids joke
@scienceseason7059 Ahh you had me 😂
1:18:20 Regine really wanted to play a keytar so we found a dude with a speaker in a shopping cart but it was making cheesy sounds and it sounded like crap!! 😂 😂😭 I'm so dead ☠️
Shout out to The Unicorns. Hells yes.
jaja, 01:29:00 he mentions the infinite content model, which would later pop up on the next record everything now...
Hey Win...if you ever have a need for a Canadian pianist who spent her teenage (and adult!) years listening to The Cure and The Smiths, I'm your woman!
1:35:45.... ASK YOUR QUESTION.. Stop rambling, what is your question that you'd like his response to vs trying to keep it going back n forth... Win handled that excellent. I'd be like, I'm sorry what is your question..
Made my Monday :) Thanks for the interview Win!
Really liked Reflektor never listened to Funeral or The Suburbs... Gonna check the earlier records out.
Funeral is a modern classic and so is the Suburbs, great albums
Not to rank on Reflektor, but the material only gets better as you go back in time. You're in for a treat.
John Smith I discovered them through Reflektor when it was first released but only now am I acquainting myself with their earlier works and honestly I'm not at all disappointed. There's this phenomenal sense of nostalgia in their work and I love it a lot.
listen to Neon Bible too it's great
@@tanner.n2304 I almost feel like it’s not talked about tho
I loved The Suburbs record but being someone who lives just south of The Woodlands I find his description here not very flattering. True, it's suburbia, all major cities have it...but The Woodlands is pretty nice as far as suburbs go. He railed on Mitchell (the developer) for his fracking, but The Woodlands is actually a very eco-friendly design which is amazing considering it's origin in the 70's. They basically took a forest and only gutted enough trees to put down the roads, houses, businesses etc. All the stores are buried behind a tall tree line so you feel like you are in the country driving around. No commercial signage is allowed over 3 feet high. It's very pretty and aesthetically appealing for a major metro suburb. If you had to live in Houston, it's a great spot to be. Lot's of wooded trails and not many ugly big box stores and home rooftops dotting the horizon. Compared to the usual suburb where they waste all the trees and throw up concrete and ugly houses, The Woodlands seems like a great place for a kid. Of course everyone likes to bag on their home town as being horrible...but seriously, come on Win. Could've been much worse. Hey Mitchell may have been a big oil fracker, but he saved most of the trees. Win's dad worked for Haliburton (ewwwwwwwww) yet he made Win. It's not all bad haha.
SOME ONE POINT ME TOWARDS THE FORGOTTEN RECORD THAT NOBODY SUPPOSEDLY LIKED! PLEASE AND THANK YOU
He was just jokingly avoiding the question there is no "forgotten record" at least I don't think there is
Arcade Fire -2001
Hate that they skip the music. the lcd soundsystem one they didn’t skip music, it was great.
This was so pleasant
the isolation part in estudios is so true you can tell just within the first seconds of a song and it sounds so sterile... most pop music nowadays is like that and that's why artists like mac demarco stand out (besides his talent obviously) he masters the acoustics of a music the feeling of waves bouncing back and forth...
Watching this in 2023 and 2 more amazing albums later...its crazy how much shit he says that is almost like unconscious clues and hints about these 2 records...infinite content (song on everything now)...regine on the keytar which she plays on a few songs and plays live now (started with songs like creature comfort and now onto age of anxiety) and his feelings about a lot of todays society and how shit is today all pours into WE and pretty much the whole album in its entirety and is his way of showing his distaste and emotions about feeling a sense of being almost lost and wanting to be found but not by todays standards if that makes sense...but the worst is knowing poor win had so much hope and believed we could do better...sigh..if he only knew Trump was coming
I swear something was like keeping ur music from me. I never heard it until this year in March. And if I knew anything about anything when we were together I obviously would not have ever left. But that chick that was outside calling u tim when i went to see if ur car was still there before opening any doors I shouldnt , and since u said someone was coming with ur brother , and already I was being blamed for why u hadn't learned "the drums on piano " yet, cuz I didn't know anything else about your music yet, I thought leaving would like protect you from what was killing us.
I didn't know anything. All I knew was I love u instantly, and that I only felt safe with you. I would go anywhere to be with you but since you called me the cab, I've been stuck in hell ever since. I didn't know it was with me in the cab, it just got way too hot and I couldn't breathe again so I got out and walked home , I guess thats how hell came with me. I couldn't ever connect any info of what I was guessing it seemed like and the shit I learned since then. THERE WAS AND IS NO OTHER HIT*(THE BITCH SAYING ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT IT IS WHO I WOULD NEVER AND CANT EVER TRUST AGAIN)* clearly we were spied upon and I don't believe u would just listen to bullshit like that , but it hasn't stopped this whole time, back to two years before we even met.
I just want us to be together again like we were. I didn't know u didn't know that I really didn't know anything. I just started watching ur live shows I can't watch too much it hurts to see how hurt u were. Everything I heard that u seem to think I choose over you is a huge misunderstanding. I had bad people, untrustworthy people surrounding me.
Everyone would rather throw me out in the street to be raped and murdered because they think a diamond or money will appear. Fucking idiots right?
Was I supposed to not hear it for another year?! Please tell me thats not the case. If it was true love is the only excuse that makes this acceptable but only when u get us out of here
Tf?
What does he mean by "we released a record a year ago, we just called it something else and nobody liked it" ?
HA ... I was wondering the same thing. Thinkin Win mighta been yankin our chains as a matter of 'deflecting' from the oft asked question. I know they've been bugged, relentlessly, about their next album. I suspect he was prolly sick of the question.
Arcade Fire strikes me as a band that doesn't, specifically, work on a set time table until they're ready & satisfied, albeit it seems like they've been on a 3 year time clock between releases. Maybe, why they keep getting pressed ... they're 'overdue'?
Anyway, I can't wait for the next one. I'd rather wait and get what they truly want out there (by their standards) rather than just rush into something that will, possibly, be crap cuz they caved into some sorta timeline pressure, if that makes any sense.
Thanks
That was awesome
so good
I keep thing, though, that the interviewer would be next to you on the couch asking-' so. you've got 5 minutes left to live. what's that like? '
anything else, though, would probably have ruined this awesome moment.... 'well... i wish i had you know... h'
18:32...yEAHHH, pOrtuguese in the House!!!
1:29:26 everything now foreshadow
YES. Win, my experience finding musicians has been the same. Flakes. Fucking flakes everywhere.
yupppppppp
which bands where on that list of influences?
Loves Montreal so much he moved to New Orleans 😂
The Clash
All good things begin with being exposed to the music of Depeche Mode.
35:12 guy on his phone. Randomly scrolling. What is wrong with people like that.
36:52 still on his phone.
Geeze what's with the comment section
no mention of MTV...
If you can't put the song, at least refer them so we can look it easily.... stupid copyright laws
WTF WAS THAT DEATHSTAR QUESTION 🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣
this interview makes me fell v uncomfortable
Love you tho Win
Interviewer is 17 going on 40
I can't get that out of my head now
Who else is watching this on the toilet?
oscars a poseur
"Hillary Clinton will be a great president" - WTF Win?!
bet you wish you had her right about now. the clown you elected instead is going to get you all killed.
Yeah, I really wish he (and many others) would just keep politics outta their 'talks'. I know it's always tempting to want to voice an opinion(s), but politics has a tendency to just turn people off ... especially when they don't agree with what you're portraying.
I do give much respect to working toward a worthwhile cause as they do for Haiti, but please, just chill on the political opining.
It's pretty obvious Arcade Fire is anti-Trump. Not to sound elitist or anything but I don't think there's any literary or artistic geniuses who support Trump. I doubt the writer of Neon Bible or The Suburbs could support a racist loony tune like Trump.
Art has and always will be tightly intertwined with every aspect of society. Fuck Donald Trump.
Fuck off Trump supporters
People be freakin out about him likin Hillary. WTF did you expect? Besides, if he said he was for Trump, his career would be instantly over.
BTW - Need to say it, he's a great singer and his band is one of the best in the world and have been since their first album. Unique band with great soul feeling, humor and fantastic melodies and instrumentation. Here Comes the Nighttime on Reflektor is a fantastic example of how good they are.
Win, stay out of politics, stick to music.
J M Why? Because he's not a Trump supporter? Fuck off!
Marc-André Giroux Chill the fuck out. For a lot of people, music is a distraction from bullshit like politics, and when artists start getting political, it reflects in their music.
Marc-André Giroux are you a Trudeau supporter? Hahaha
fuck off and let people think feely
@@iamdoriian114 the personal is political you dumbass, I bet you're the same sort of dumbfuck that would have pink floyd be "non-political" also.

why are you watching? lol
