That's not part of the original.
Francesca Howard is talented and I hope this didn’t ruin her acting career.
It's her first role, so... most likely.
titlewave I think so too
I totally agree with you titlewave! Its one of those movies like Nightmare Before Christmas where it tanked in theaters and then became super popular many years later. I actually enjoyed it. Once you forgot about the CGI not being the best it was very enjoyable.
Peter Graveldinger I liked some of it. I enjoyed the skimbleshanks scene. I think it would have been a lot better if they only hired actors that were talented singers and dancers, rather than hiring celebrities for the sake of it like with Rebel Wilson. Despite all the money invested I think the 1998 version still out-talents this film.
Oh I totally agree with you Ashodel. I think the background dancers some of them I felt weren't nearly as good as some of the other dancers. When I saw the movie the first time I had to put it into perspective of it's going to be it's own take on the movie and tried not to compare it to the play, And I found that I enjoyed it very much so that I didn't compare it. But by comparing to the theatrical play, the Broadway play was by far better. But I would say both were very enjoyable.

Imagine how good this could've been in 2D. All this wasted potential 😔
I looked up the concept art of the Spielberg/Amblin production that fell through. I think it would've been awesome.
Easily a high grossing film if it was 2d or got some talented costume designers and make up artists
I don't get why people want live action over animation
This was everything I wanted to see of modern day Cats. Animating it I suppose could be interesting. I prefer that for a spinoff Cats series. The sets and performers are simply too impressive to animate and convey the same grandeur imo.

Meh, it’s something to do in quarantine at least
I mean, after seeing this on stage prior to the movie being released, I can honestly say if they just dressed like they did on stage and filmed on a decent set, everyone would like this film a lot more.
So..... like the OLD Cats movie that was infinitely better?

Dancing: amazing

Background: beautiful
CGI: I’m not going to sleep tonight

@@Andy-lm2zp what do you mean? They are the songs from the musical. One of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time
Nah, songs and choreography are horrible too
@@dimetime35c isnt cats one of the most hated broadway musicals
@@miyubeilschmidt5351 its "hated" cause it had such a long run. People got tired of it. The musical itself won many awards. Its more to much of something causes burnout.
I fear no man but this.. thing..
It scares me
Marty, I’m scared.
Hahahahaha
Uhhh Meow
This is just oozing lost potential. The setting is beautiful, the ensemble is amazing, leads are fab. I think the CGI just gets in the way of everything. It doesn't land on the human body and react with the set and lighting as much as prosthetics would and the tentative camera pans and cuts seem be worried about the CGI in post. Audiences would have found that weird but still a little more accepting than this. Also the cockroach scene was just so uncomfortable, sad outcome of a movie.
Me and my dad saw this movie once
Even if the technology was flawless, the concept is fundamentally flawed. The musical works because the audience understands that the visuals are abstract and they suspend their disbelief. When you try to make the sets realistic, the effect is fundamentally ruined, because at the end of the day, cats are not human shaped, and there is no way of shaping and sizing them to make it look natural in the real world.
@@gorgolyt Absolutely, Steven Spielbergs 2D concept for cats could have worked because you can actually draw cats dancing. If you use human actors to represent cats you will always end up in the uncanny valley. Not matter if you use CGI or prosthetics.
@@gorgolyt Yes you can make cats human like, like in the puss in boots dreamworks movie.
@@lonelyscarygirl I'm talking about using human performers. If you did it fully animated it might look good. Although it wouldn't really be "Cats", which is a stage show.
Wow, this opening number really isn't that bad! If the whole movie was fun like this instead of having horrifying things like cockroaches with human faces I'd watch it tomorrow.
thank you for saying it!! I loved the movie, particularly the sets. I felt it was really fun throughout. Mr. Mistoffelees scene is always a favorite. I found the movie to be so much fun that I immediately forgave and busted at the sight of J Hud as a cockroach. XD
Don’t worry the cockroaches are only here for one scene, but...God...you hadn’t see the mice’s.

@@creepykidandinfinitedreams2987 I did, and she was a white cat who wasn't seen maybe once. Here, she's the main character and her face & entire look & movement is amazing.

@@Vousie yes because they gave this 2019 version a main person to give us something to be told the story to. But in the original she doesnt affect the other cats as much as she does in the 2019. All she did in the OG was get the okay to finally touch Grizzabella. Watch the sideways video of this movie it explains it more. and AND they took out jemima!
Jesus the amount of work the editor had to do.
The intensity of the dance movies so much doesn't match with the intensity of the song.
Everytime the song reaches to its max peak intensity, the dance moves become less and slow.
I mean whose decision was that ?
Andy Blankenbuehler, the choreographer.
Unrelatable Noone I know right!!? When they do that pop electro progression the camera just stoid still like wtf? I would like this much more if the movie was shot like a one take and all handheld

Professor TayTay Nope. I usually sing the 98 version tho. I heard that one first, so I prefer that one.

this looks so lifelike i thought they were all cats
I'm not gonna lie, this movie was bad, but not nearly as bad as others made it out to be. It was a guilty pleasure for me. I actually really liked the songs, mostly this one, Ian McKellan's song, and Memory. And the actors i thought did a decent job.
Thank god I'm not the only one
Mmmmm pretty sure there’s no hate that wasn’t deserved. The movie is so terrifyingly uncanny that I played it in my haunted house and it’s scared away the demons back to hell.
@Blair Bart II There was no plot to begin with, so idk... Maybe this simply shouldn't have been a movie. It especially wasn't worth pushing back Wicked, which would make for a far slicker transition to the silver screen.
I know I agree! I found quite a few things to enjoy in this movie. It’s not perfect but it’s not completely horrible like everyone says it has charm and talent put into it. And the songs slap
Blair Bart II The plot is “We want to go to Cat Heaven! Let’s sing to see who’s the most worthy.” That’s not a plot, that’s an excuse to lump songs together. Which is fine, but it doesn’t make for great cinema

You’d think with the faster, electronic beat they added to the song, that they’d have a high energy choreography to match it. But no.
This is art and people still can't appreciate that this is a legendary musical, the effort of the actors and actresses was really good and hard, they sang live while recording. The cats look weird but come on, see farther than that.

Even though "Jellicle" is a made up word, it is ingrained in my head after hearing this song! 😹
Nn
It’s not. It means “Private part”.
That makes sense, considering it was one of the few words that anyone could actually hear.
With the amount of editing that this movie needed, would it have so hard to sync the voice-acting a little?
Jellicle means
"Dear Little"
Lmao someone told me it was short for angelical. They were wrong 🤣
It genuinely makes me sad how much potential this movie could've had. Just watching Skimbleshanks's part confirms that.
I don't know why everyone hates the movie? I love it 😥🐈⬛
If you grew up watching the play like I did as a kid , you’ll understand how great this musical is .....no matter how crazy the cgi is 🤷🏽♀️

If they've hired actual talented AND fitting people to these roles it would've been a hit... even if there would've been some comments about how they look. Skimbleshanks was the only enjoyable performance in this movie and that's kinda wholesome but then again, quite sad.
Dude everyone can see these comments
@@thomasburnet2546 nah, really?
Fun fact: Most of the non-star casts are a bunch of professional dancers. In fact, one of the ballet dancers became the main protagonist of this film (I forgot her name). They also had to be “cat schooled” in order to be in the film. Even the director had to be cat schooled because he had no idea what catnip is.
God this is so creepy. I cannot imagine sitting through 2 hours of it.

Tbh. Music - great.
But seriously. I have no clue of choreography but even I can see that this is nothing compared to the performance of the stage version of 1997.

I disagree. I thought the dancing here was fantastic. Maybe I don't have as keen an eye as you.
You mean the stage version of 1982? If you’re referring to the production in 1998, that was just a videotape version of the play which was already 16 years old!
@@williamgreer1824 I mean the videotape because that is what I've of Cats so far. That's why i refered to 1998.
The design and appearance of these characters look like they were an idea by employees at Jurassic Park or something. 'Oh let's combine our human genes with cat genes! It's the next step in our evolution.'
The first time I saw the opening to this, I immediately thought...
"The whole film cast, production, and crew have all gone high off catnip!"
The songs are fun and, as the movie progresses, you get used to the looks.
This isn't true... You never get use to the look. Like a fever dream all the way through.
That's true, but this film still sucked because there's no plot, all the cats looked the same, the names are so bad I couldn't remember anyone's, hell I didn't even know the main chicks name till the last song.
The movie is great as an drinking game though, me and my friend did this last week (virtual) and I finished 5 full glass
@@shortstuff780 with all due respect, the names of the characters are actually quite easy to memorize (though I'll give you that some of the characters, visually, look the same, but I blame the people who were responsible for their designs. I wish they had stick a little closer to the way they look in the live musical). As for the plot, there's a plot, but it's not exactly Oscar worthy. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical isn't famous for it's simple plot, but for the songs and for its dance numbers.
It's got a couple of good thinsg, but it's a failed representation of what the musical really is... in fact, I'm one of the fans that believe that Cats is one musical, where part of the magic of what makes it incredibly beautiful, is the way the characters interact with the audience. You can't copy that in a movie, no matter how much you try.
AGREED. The movie wasn’t great, but the CGI was not to blame for this. The storyline and writing was pretty weak, but visually the whole movie is stunning, and you DO get used to the character designs, and they look quite cool in certain scenes. Rebel Wilson’s scene was straight out of a horror movie, though 😂

Love everything about this scene. The sets are amazing and I think the movie more easily conveys the story than theatre. I left my first performance of Cats very confused. I had trouble hearing the words. I wish I knew what a Jellicle cat was going into. I now get it and can't wait to see live again.
I know this comment is a year old but I had to just respond for a moment to say this. On the one hand you’re right that it tries to tell the story more clearly, but what baffles me is that they change a bunch of little things from the story that suddenly makes it even more confusing than it should be. I think I was the most annoyed that they reduced the hell out of Munkustrap’s part (among others) when he was meant to be the one to defend everyone else from Macavity
