Discovered a 28 yrs old Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black bottle(never opened) at home. Gave it a good shake, pulled it in the pen. Working just fine for me.
I have been enjoying your videos, especially the ink swatches. I tried several samples and settled in buying two bottles that I enjoy very much, really dark but safe on the pens and good for everyday use. I like my ink to be black and not dark grey. Aurora black and sailor the basic line in black work very well for me. They almost seem like the same ink! Looking forward to more videos.
Aurora Black is definitely a starkly black ink, however the long dry time bothers me. I also have J. Herbin Perle Noire, which is nice but can be finicky in some pens. Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin is a nice black. Sailor Jentle Black is a solid performer also.
Hi all 👋 I’m totally new to the fountain pen and ink thing - busy with my first order actually and I found Pelikan ink available in SA on Takealot if anyone is interested. I can’t wait to dive in, learn more and share in this new-found community 🖋️✍🏻
I ordered them from Takealot, very nice inks and I still have to try some of the colours. They weren't always so easily available here. I really like the Brilliant Brown.
nice one...i too have a few videos on my channel as i love the writing process and the fountain pen as my main writing instrument...with different inks...its such a pleasure truly...
I mainly use black inks on vintage pens. As such always look for easy to maintain, but more important, PH neutral inks. Quink is very acidic and can corrode very old metals, Noodler’s inks are PH neutral but the dyes are a bit harder to maintain. Pelikan 4001 and Diamine Onyx Black, even if not as acidic as Quink but are on the low end of PH levels, not quite neutral. So my winners have always been Aurora Black, Herbin Perle Noir and Waterman Intense Black. Aurora and Herbin have zero water resistance while Waterman has some. So if you don’t want to overthink it, easy, once again, Waterman inks are the safest, easiest to maintain and an overall great value. And of course the highly basic japanese inks and pigmented inks are out of the question, I wouldn’t even dare putting a sailor, iroshizuku or carbon black on something like a waterman 5 or sheaffer balance from the 30s
@@onemorepen pretty safe also, PH neutral and easy to maintain. I don’t know if they limited production but I’ve found it’s harder to find everywhere as before.
Thanks for the video, not many people compare black inks, but it's the one ink where I haven't found quite the right one. It is a colour I use everyday so I tend to buy bottles (which means I've really only tried two), and seeing a comparison with more inks is helpful. Based on your video I might give Waterman or Diamine a try. I have used R+K Sketch ink Lotte; a fine ink. It is pigmented like Carbon Black so it can, and has, clogged up my pen when I have forgotten the ink in there. I am currently using Noodler's Dark Matter for everyday writing. Another fine ink. Nice and dark and much easier to clean out than the Sketch ink...but it takes a long time to dry and I find it still smears days after if I simply even graze the writing slightly with my finger or hand. Between the Waterman and Diamine do you find one is smuggier than the other or one that dries faster?
Ok thanks, I will give Waterman a try. I like their bottle design and how it can be tipped over to get to ink when levels are lower, so it will be a two birds sorta situation haha@@onemorepen
@felixchengtk I have been afraid of trying it because it's permanent and scared of it ruining my pen. Do you find it hard to clean or have you had no issues using it with your pens?

Vintage ink... awesome
I love the mood and objectivity in your video. The pace and scribbling are so calm and relaxing.
Thanks!
Platinum Carbon black . Absolutely waterproof when dry. Ideal if you use watercolor over it.
Its on my list to order next.
Parker: redish;
Waterman: black pure;
Pelikan greyish;
Diamine brownish;
Sheaffer blueish;
Spot on!
Hi! I've really enjoyed your ink rewiew videos.
My favourite black ink is Aurora black, not just because i'm Italian 😂
Ciao
That's a great ink, I definitely need to get me some.

Thanks! And I agree, black should not be grey. I am probably going to do my red/purple inks next.
Im a new fountain pen enthusiast! And my first ink was parker quink and from the look of it, the one i least prefer
I have had good experiences with Lamy Black, Sheaffer Black and J. Herbin Perle Noire.
I would suggest pilot black ink. Its a good black.

Interesting, thank you!
Found a new fountain pen channel. Cool 🖋️😎
Welcome aboard!

Awesome, that is very useful. What is your take on Sheaffer black? It is one of my favourites.

@@oscarcalva2189Same here, took me so long to find a bottle.
If I could make a suggestion, you should try Aurora Black. It is very stable and provides a dark shade.
Thanks, I will put it on my list for the next batch of inks to order. I have heard good things about Aurora Black.
@@onemorepen one other ink that may intrigue you is Hongdian Black. It is dark with water resistance.

I haven't really used the Diamine that much, so its hard to compare. I can say the Waterman is a solid choice, I use it a lot.

De Atramentis Archive is a permanent black ink. It's performance won't disappoint you. Give it a try.
@felixchengtk I have been afraid of trying it because it's permanent and scared of it ruining my pen. Do you find it hard to clean or have you had no issues using it with your pens?
I have not really compared drying times, but I would say the Waterman dries fairly quickly.
Great Video. Not sure if it would be dark enough for you, but I really enjoy iroshizuku take-sumi.
I have never really looked at it, but it looks like a lovely colour and I will add it to my list. Thanks.
Noodler's Heart of Darkness for archives...
Is heart of darkness a pigment ink? and is cleaning it out difficult? I've used a pigment ink and find it takes a lot of work to clean the pen.
@@pilesofthings I use it in Noodler's pens only. Very saturated, then again waterproof and archival capable (i think)
@JussiTraskila ohhh ok, thanks 😊 Thinking that's not my perfect black I appreciate you taking the time to respond
Have you tried Noodlers?
I actually haven't been able to get hold of their inks locally. I will have to order some...
