I was born disabled and spent my middle twenties nursing my mother through terminal cancer. I will never forget what my mother's hospice nurse told me when she saw how ragged and exhausted I was: "You won't help your mom by killing yourself." Remember that the best reason to keep your house tidy is to make a healthy, peaceful environment for yourself and your family. Guilt has no place in this process. As Fly Lady says: "Seek progress, not perfection." Remember to be as kind and gentle to yourself as you are to your children. May God bring you peace.

Really liked this practical advice. I tend to do this in the afternoons, when I’m sewing. I set a timer for an hour and then get up and do a little task, laundry, meal prep etc and then feel refreshed going back to my sewing AND I’m fitting in my home tasks too. Love the way you simplify the thoughts and reasons behind it. Every little bit helps us maintain a cozy home

I've tried what you've suggested to Melissa, but in my actual workplace, I cannot have "fix" breaks. So I am doing them just as often as I can, and try to never leave a room empty-handed- always bringing something to the place it belongs. If I wake up earlier, or end my shift on time, I jump up to do whatever is left. I'm struggling with hoarding tendencies and trying to pass thru depression, so it will take time. But biting the elephant once at a time helps tones! Thank you Diane, for all the inspiration you gave and the great cheering-it's really motivating!:)

Yes! Top of the hour is really helpful on those days when I am sick or lacking sleep or just down. At the end of the day I’ve done at least an hour of activity maintaining my house. Sometimes, just getting started gives me momentum and I’m able to do 15 or 20 minutes. Very valuable tip.

Hello! As a fellow ADHD here, I have trouble staying on task, so what I do is write down the things of the routine that I want to do and an estimated time how long each task is going to take, then I set my timer for ONE task and try to beat my estimated time, so even if I didn't stay on task the timer reminds me. 😀 but.... I have to remember to set the timer every time

Thank you! Recovering from covid and related heart issues. S-L-O-W-L-Y getting back into routines. Sometimes I just have to stop in the middle of what I am doing and lay down. It takes me the longest to load and unload the dishwasher because I get dizzy bending over to reach the bottom rack. I have to take 5 or six breaks to empty the bottom. I have been using the work only during commercials method and it works great. Sometimes I need to finish when I feel more rested in the morning. Very important to cut myself some slack during this recovery period. That is a very important part of self care. The self talk awareness is so necessary because I am necessarily outside my normal fly-routines and I can feel the pull of missing my routines. That's ok. But I have to consciously dwell on the realization that, of course, it's ok -even if I can't finish my dishes at night. So I have been doing a little at a time during Olympics commercials. And that has been fun.

SOOOO helpful!! Thank you! Also useful for people with ADHD who need to keep to a list/schedule, but find it a challenge - once we get stuck into a task, we get stuck in hyperfocus, and later on realise that nothing else got done. And short bites helps counteract boredom factor in doing chores!

Thank you so much for this advice! If I may, here’s something that has optimized my “top of the hour”: I take the first 30 seconds or so to gaze out of a window ( I’m fortunatae enough to have a lovely vista to enjoy), take a few deep breaths and just see how the sunshine and shadows are shifting through the day, how the seasons are changing…just whatever is there to be seen. What a difference it has made to me!

What I have understood from your videos over the last year is that its little steps that helps you reach the top of the mountain. I've been keeping up with my routines even though my workload is sometimes frenetic.
That's another thing I've tried to limit.
Anyway by doing a little bit everyday my house is transforming and I don't have to spend my precious weekend time cleaning (and being grumpy).
    Thanks Diane 💕

I'm very much looking forward to this series, Diane. I've been struggling with establishing routines over the last two years, because things kept changing every couple of months so it was never long enough to fully build habits (in and out of home office, moving to another apartment, living part time at my partner's apartment, moving offices, you name it 😅)

Wow, that is a super tip. I start right now! And because I have so many things which are not in the right place, I use the top and the bottom of the hour this evening. It's 16:23 and I think I will use this tip till 19
o' clock. So 5 times. And tomorrow I start fresh with one time in an hour. And I also will use this time to drink a glass of water. Thank you from Germany.

I did the top of the hour when I was recovering from surgery. It was supposed to be 3 weeks but took 2 years. Lol. It never thought to use it in other situations. I work from home with special needs. Struggled to fit in zone cleaning. Wanted to do it in the afternoon but we’re busy with client. If I squeeze 5 mins at top of hour 1-3 I could get it done. Great advice Diane. I am going to try it and I know I will feel better getting my zone cleaning done.

Hi Diane. Great video! I have adapted the FlyLady system by bundling one routine with something I already do. When I naturally go to the kitchen to make my coffee, I unload the dishwasher which frees it up for the day. When I use the bathroom I do the swish and swipe and wipe down the sink. Linking what I am already going to do in a zone helps me feel more on top of things.

I am a retired lady/wife/mother/grandmother; visually impaired so therefore I have always had to maintain a routine and orderly home life. As a retired lady, I arise each day, do my self care routine before going downstairs to begin my day; after taking care of myself; filling my heart with worship music and Bible scriptures, making my bed, being dressed casually with comfortable shoes on my feet, I go to the kitchen to wipe down the counters (my evening routine in the kitchen is to run dishwasher, clean the sink and tidy up the kitchen area for another day); I prepare the coffee maker for our morning coffee, put on a load of laundry to wash, check my calendar; jotting down reminders for my daily life or the week; posting them on my bulletin board on my pantry door. Cleaning the bathrooms is the next task, turning on diffusers in the bathrooms; dusting/polishing furniture is the next task, decluttering areas that are needed putting away items in their correct place in the home. I check my house plants when I enter the room where they are placed, taking care of them if needed. I do not spend lot of time on each task (10-20 minutes) which is plenty of time to complete that task. Breakfast is prepared at the time I prepare the morning coffee. I clean up as I cook a meal or a snack; putting away dishes after each meal. I take breaks during the day to complete my vision therapy which is doodle art and faux calligraphy. Monday or Tuesday is the day I take care of my household budget, paying bills, making phone calls and other circumstances regarding our finances, appointments, etc. The laundry is folded at night while watching television, my husband folds his own laundry and I fold mine and he takes my laundry basket upstairs for me (due to my vision loss). I refresh our bedroom on Mondays, (linens are laundered, mattress is refreshed with baking soda and essential oils), my husband takes care of the carpet in the home, I use a swiffer to sweep the hardwood, ceramic floors and use an O'Cedar mop for mopping floors. This is a sort summary of my daily tasks within my home, but I have to be organized to manage my life (by no means is my home in perfect condition) but everything in my home has a "home" and we endeavor to keep those items in place in order to help me maintain our home and we do "live in our home"...it is not always tidy and clean but I do my best................I worked for over 31 years and there was times when I was unable to maintain my home in the manner I wanted to but self care was important and my husband being my helpmate gave me the encouragement and help I needed...Now being retired, I have established a system that suits my days and I am happy.

What a great tip, Dianne! To get to the end of your day and realize you accomplished things at work and in the home, and got up and had screen breaks AND got in some steps! A win-win! I think that’s the whole power of the Flylady system. She taught me how home management doesn’t have to take an hour a day. It’s really amazing how much I get done doing five minutes here and there all day long.

Great tips, Diane! I was very sick for a few days and I was taking care of a sick child at the same time. I used FlyLady’s timer idea and really kept up our home. I would set the timer for 15 minutes and focus on the task to be done for 15 minutes. Then I’d set it for 15 minutes to rest. Then 15 minutes work. 15 minutes rest. I alternated working and resting 15 minutes at a time, and I think I actually was more productive than on a regular day! (Eventually I did take an hour long nap😉)

Great tip Diane. I've been using Flylady and have adjusted my Daily Focus days and Zones to fit my life. My goal is to spend 15 minutes on my Daily Focus and 15 minutes in my Zone each day. With my morning swish\swipe and my evening sink shine, it works pretty well. If I have a busy day and can't do my Zone cleaning, I catch up on anti- procrastination day.

I used to do TOTH and BOTH back when I was on forums.... I don't do it these days, but I actually set my 5 minute reset alarms at TOTH a few times a day, and if I need a work day and don't have much energy I will set alarms for TOTH and BOTH.... I only last a couple hours those days those, so still don't get much done, but its better than nothing.
