They're 18
you got this all wrong. the numbers are something else. the age is random for them.
offtopic but i love your profile picture oms

In the boom their. Supposed to be 12 and eventually 13 and for gabriel 0 to 1 years old
I know I’m 5 years too late but we should just...actually make a movie like the book
What change? Im reading the book
One RaKu06 the movie is a**

Ok buddy. Lois Lowry (author) was an enormous part in the making of this. Every single idea, every single scene, was her idea (along with the directors obviously). She agreed to this. She wanted to create this world on the big screen.
yup
Ok but why doesn’t Jonas have light eyes?!
Bc of the mark
in the movie it’s a mark on their arms ..
ikr! it's literally the only thing that sets him apart!
what? they couldn't find an actor with blue/green eyes?
I agree, they could have easily given him colored contact lenses to put in his eyes. They do it in movies all the time.
Because for some reason they thought taking off your shirt isn't appropriate?
The trailer makes the movie look cool and action packed.
The movie is nothing like the book.
People who haven't read the book think it looks cool.
people who have read the books are pissed off.
movie logic
And on both sides, the movie is boring.
So boring.
Well, I haven't read it, but it was one of the most boring movies I had ever seen.
I'm reading the book at school
+Chloebugaboo me too! and the movie looks awesome!!
+Colleen Donovan I have read the book, and i'm even more pumped to see this
They changed the movie so much!
Jonas isn't 16 (according to wikipedia)
He was 11 and later he became 12!
We know
Ikr
Yea we know but every movie based on a book is gonna be different
They probably made him older due to acting skills
Bye the end of the book he was 13
Jonas: how much memory are u gunna give to me??
Giver: *yes*
PFFT BAHAHAHA...I laughed more then I should've
He gave Jonas 3 at first in the book
theoretically Jonas brain will explode any second when he's containing all memories known to humanity due to the abundance of neutrons
two movies that didn't match up to anyone's expectations:
Percy Jackson (lol)
The Giver (double lol)
A Winkle in time (triple lol)
The saddest part is that the books are awesome
@@naufalnoorizan1763 ikr!!! I mean if you're talking about Percy Jackson, then it doesn't even make SENSE that Chiron already knew who everyone's parents were! wow the creators could literally put fire and magic into Harry Potter, but they couldn't make a friecking ball of blue with a trident on it literally just floating on top of someone's head? they couldn't make war games and make Percy fall into a river? 1.jonas had light eyes
2.jonas is 12
3.the giver has to touch his back to transfer the memories
4.lily turns 8
5.lily's braids
The book is way better
Exactly! That’s all the stuff I noticed in one comment
I think that them touching the back to transfer memories was probably the least important detail they changed... the movie is just completely off
You do realize that not every movie is going to be the exact same as the book
@@tylunn180 Yes, but there's a difference between tweaking some of the details and making some major changes. like the character ages are rly important to this story
@@anwe1281 yeah, I see why they are for the book, but not a lot of people would watch the movie if they were 12. Ik Harry Potter actors were good even though they were young, but I feel as if it was good that they made them a little older with the movie version

Thank you. I loved the book, we read it together in class and my teacher read it amazingly but I also really enjoy the movie because I’ll be honest… which future society is really gonna trust a 12 year old boy the ability to have ALL the memories of the past? Like… I don’t even trust a 12 year old with a secret about a gift.
YESS I agree, any movie that has a book is going to get backlash like maze runner, Harry Potter. It's still amazing regardless

where is the baby gabriel…i wanted them to at least maintain that storyline 😩😫😪😢
yea thats one part of the story that could be considered important, as how he starts to show more emotions, i just hope they at least continue with the story thats in the book
yea but ughhhhh i REALLY wanted that storyline, they better effectively replace it or something
there ware rules in movies one of them shows that babies are not allowed to be hurt (or killed) so that's why Gabriel is not in the movie like in the book
Yeah but in the book Gabriel didn't get hurt? Nothing happend to him

What. I read the book. There is no war Jonas vs. Government. Wth
+Anders Lodin Towards the end, there sort of is. Jonas realizes the government is wrong for condemning the innocent newborns and elders to "Release" and plans with the Giver to basically overthrow the system by giving the Community the memories. He later OPENLY defies the government when he runs away with Gabe despite the risk of being put to death by the government. The government even sends search planes for him.
Anders Lodin I never read the book but if there was no Jonás vs govement what was the plot
Órale Wey
So basically through out the book Jonas learns that there is so much more to life than what the community shows. I suggest you read the book for the full experience, it’s a good read.

I don’t think you should hate a movie because it isn’t like the book. Personally I really loved it, it made me feel a certain way for days, and appreciate the luck we have to live this life.
yea but... the movie could've had a cooler message if it was 12 year old jonas in a dystopian society minus the whole sci fi thing
People are so fixated on pointing out that this movie is nothing like the book and they aren't realizing that this is a great movie. And people compare to other movies when it can stand by itself. It was shot beautifully. It is a great movie that I recommend highly. Every stop being cynical assholes and appreciate this movie for what it is.
I just finished reading the book and I loved it. And I just now finished watching the movie and the movie is great but the book is so so so much better. There are things in the movie that they should've changed so it could be similar to the book. I think that's why people are disappointed.
The whole emotions and morning injections is ripped straight from equilibrium.

In school, I'm reading this book, my class is in chapter 21
on
I’m reading it now in class, we’re on chapter 16 :D
Fiona was barely in the book and there was only two times where her and Jonas actually talked-but now it shows them kissing? Jonas is supposed to be 12..? Jonas didn't fight anyone either and Fiona never even acknowledged anything about the society and how there's something missing from it. Jonas was the only one having these thoughts and kept them between him and the giver, Fiona and Asher had no thoughts about changing society and never talked about anything of that sort. Honestly, neither character even made any difference in the book. The movie seems waaaay off..
zozo so true well if you see this it’s 2018 and you put this comet long ago sooooooooooooo hi 😋
First of all, its obvious that you came here to criticize the movie. In the book when Fiona skips her injection she realises that she feels something for Jonas but cannot name it which is a sign that shows that she acknowledges something about the society. Moreover you said that Fiona and Asher had no thoughts about changing society. Bro are u okay? The book nor the movie had given this kind of idea to us. You can clearly see that they have no thought about changing the society, they just trust Jonas and whatever he is doing. Asher doesnt even understand him a bit, Fiona does a little but surely not enough to have her own idea about it. Overall the movie is not "waaaay off". It is just altered and adjusted to appeal the targeted audience. So don't try to degrade the movie. Its a fine piece of work.
zozo the book said that Jonas was A twelve
uras asil um what book did you read?? In the original book Jonas and Fiona never kissed. The movie is TOTALLY way off from the entire book.
@@simplyskyeee Hmm, if it was way off, go make a more accurate one. As I said it is adjusted to appeal a certain audience. Also you right, they didn't kiss I got things mixed up but still it doesn't make the movie TOTALLY way off from the entire book. It just adds up a dramatic and appealing part to the movie.
They only took the general elements of the giver, like the black and white world and how the giver sees colors. They killed the book. It looks nothing like the book reads. But I'll still give it a chance. And Meryl's. Character seems like she thinks Jonas is bad from the start which isn't in the book and where are the job assignments because obviously he snuck to where the giver was. Idk I'm frustrated lolol
Its only the Trailer. Calm Down.
I totally agree. I was so excited about this movie when I heard about it, but the trailer majorly disappoints.
are you new to movies. They pretty much change every movie based on a book. This is nothing new, . Relax.
papitosabe Not always! Many book to film movies are fairly straightforward.
I agree with you. I'm not feeling this movie at all. It feels nothing like the
book.
i read the book and LOVED IT. it's true, the movie is very very different from the book, but it's still an amazing movie. both have their own strengths. i was a little mad that it was different, but when the movie also had me in tears, it didn't matter in the end. amazing film
So this is my thought on how the movie should have looked from the information we got in the book
First of, the homes are not futuristic but they have advanced technology. Secondly this takes part in a futuristic world with knowledge far surpassing ours, that would be controlling the weather, make memories something that you can control and much more.
In the book “I” didn’t see any information that could hint there being a wall or a drop around the city. I think it just was normal nature with animals and waterfalls, hills and city’s and so on.
The world is obviously shaped from war or similar, and that’s is why they did all those rules and things to keep the citizens safe.
I could explain more, but I read this book in one day as a school project and all this is from my memory and I could probably create a similar world that the author was trying to get.
But don’t take my word, this is just what I think from what I got in the book...
Now when I think about it. My book may have been a little bit different but I don’t think so
People are upset that it has nothing to do with the book, stop. When you go to watch the movie, forget that the book exists. Then judge the movie based on the actual movie storyline, not the relation to the book.
...No.
And how does this have nothing to do with the book? It's got the title, the characters, it picks from the storyline, and the writer of the book is supposed to be helping with the movie... -_-
RoxxySweets I didn't say it has nothing to do with the book. Other people are, however.
RoxxySweets Then blame the writer for taking a cheap cash in at the price of quality :/
From what I can see its seems like a good movie, its just not faithful to the book (not really a bad thing). I can see that some things have been changed to adapt to the new audience-like injections instead of pills- its seem that the movie will be good. My only problems are that it looks like divergent and i pictured it as more rural and traditional and the love with fiona that in the book he chooses to leave behind and where is gabriel? There are changes but i think watching the movie as its own will make those bearable for most, but for me its all fine. (Think about it the book has little to no action and it would be boring to watch the book line for line)
Preeeeeety sure that he is supposed to have blue eyes. That's the whole point why he can see color. With the apple throwing part. Why does the actor have brown eyes? Or am I just dumb and forget parts of the book?
No, you're right. The thing was that his eyes were light and the others were dark (since they dont see colors)
Im pretty sure they changed a lot of things from the book. Hes meant to be twelve - etc
Dimi V i agree. This movie makes him seem so fucking violent and older then twelve. I like the book better....
If you read the series, which The Giver is the first book in, you know that he have blue eyes.
And he's also supposed to be twelve but you're not bitching about that.
The colorlessness is actually a reference to the book. In the book, everything was colorless and Jonas was able to see beyond and see the color
Ok so um the giver is one of my fave books, just found out there's a movie, i'm watching this and wut. Lol they just took the name of the book, the name of the characters and made smth completely different
I'm not normally one of those people that are like oh this movie is horrible it ruins the book it's nothing like the book it's shit. I normally appreciate the difference b/w book and movie but I'm actually quite angry about this movie adaption tbh. The giver is my #1 favourite novel. It was one of the few original if not the original dystopian novels and this movie is trying to turn it into the hunger games and the Divergent series and that's making me angry. The whole point of the Giver is that it is NOT an action/thriller, it's meant to be a drama. It's meant to be innocent and naive not about Jonas finding love and rebelling. After the first half of the novel he doesn't even really talk to his friends after that. This is supposed to be Jonas' internal journey. And it's making me angry that 1. The movie is making the Giver seem like some vindictive mentor that wants to take down the council which is not necessarily true. Yes he disagrees with what the town is doing but he's too weak and too old to want to do anything. In my eyes he was always a gentle and nice man and the Giver in this movie seems mean and unpleasant. He seems unforgiving and cold. 2. The council is getting suspicious of Jonas when in the novel the council never even noticed what Jonas was doing. Especially since the Giver ultimately has more power than the council and he always gives the council guidance. 3. Jonas doesn't tell anyone about anything that the Giver has taught him except for when he plays war with his friends and tells his sister about animals but those are the few times he slips up and realizes it's better to not inform anyone around him about what he knows. 4. Jonas is 13 and he doesn't fall in love with the red headed girl and ever try to save her 5.The main reason that Jonas "rebels" or leaves is because of his younger brother. He doesn't want his younger brother to have to ever endure the pain of the memories. 6. Only light eyes people are supposed to be able to recieve the memories unless the person with the memories dies or if they run away.
I just don't like that they're trying to turn this amazing novel into something completely different. Most movie adaptions stick to the same plot but they remove things or change some endings but this movie just ignoring the original storyline all together and adding in things that never existed in the first place and that is why I'm mad because it really isn't the Giver.
If people watch this movie and end up reading the book they will be sadly dissapointed with the novel because the movie is making this book seem like a young adult fiction or something.
I havent read the giver (but i will now). I'll admit the film looks good, but I'm also getting fed up with all these film companies jumping on the dystopian band wagon.
Dont get me wrong, i love the hunger games and divergent, but in both cases they focused on the love aspect too much, and now it seems they're doing it again with the giver.
Like i said, i havent read it, but is the red head (Fiona?) an actual character from the book or was she made up for the film?
Jenny Andrews Actual character. Just read and you will see who she is. :) I'm glad you will be reading it!
Jenny Andrews actual character but her importance in the movie is stretched way too out of proportion from her importance in the book
This movie was AMAZING!! maybe they did change a few parts and stuff, but they kept true to the plot and the moral of the story. The way they put it totally gave the audience the same feeling it gvr them with the book. The scenes were beatiful and actors were fantastic!

for everyone asking why everything is so different it’s cause the director didn’t read the book. she asked this 85 year old man to read it to her then she read some major key lines, then she asked the 85 year old man what happened and this is the result.
That scene when Jonas is giving the memories to Gabriel is so emotional idk why
I don't think they should've turned the book into a movie. Everyone who read the book is just going to complain... Btw can someone explain the ending of the book because I could never make out what happened
This is a serie of 4 books, "the giver" being the firts one. At the end of the first book (SPOILERS!) Jonas fled. He then heard music and saw lights and it is not answered wheter he was hallucinating (tired hungry etc) or wether he found another place, different from his world. I believe that question is answered in the rest of the books serie but I haven't had a chance to read them yet. Hope it helps ;)
***** I always thought he died as well, but who knows... i guess it's one of those books where you have to decide for yourself
The other books in the series don't focus on Jonas they focus on other people in a different community so Jonas may have died but he may not have I'm not going to tell you if he did or didn't but yes he is mention in the other books the next book are Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son. Son is about a 14 year old birth mother who had a son and the son was stolen. So have fun reading the series you'll be surprised what happens in those books. I LOVED them.
No the other 3 books are completely different I had a chance to read the second one and it is COMPLETELY different
***** It's a very controversial book. but yeah I agree it might be better. I'm so anxious to see the ending!
Seeing this makes me mad they're changing it way too much their taking such a good classic book with the worst ending and screwing it up they're ruining it and Jonas is way to old for that part he's 12 not 18!!! Ugh
Well, the book is the first of four, so when you read the others it makes sense
Nicolas Feild
i guess i'll have to re-read those because i dont understand any of it.
I totally agree with you!
& I don't like that he can ask questions. In the book it was prohibited for kids to ask question because that was rude. I really doubt the movie will be better than the book.
Rose Castillo He's given the right to ask questions the moment he becomes protege to the Giver :P
I know right...the only hope I have for this movie is the song that they played in the background
Just watched this again . They need to make part 2 3 and 4 asap

No ever since The Hunger Games came out!
Both of yall are wrong. This is based off a very popular book that came out in 1993
I believe the book The Giver first came out.
FYI the giver came out way before both divergent and the hunger games.
Yes Tay Amanda is correct.
I'm kind of afraid to see the movie because it looks so different.
He looks like he's 18, they have injections, the Annex is off in the middle of nowhere, the colors come to him very quickly and he receives memories differently...
same!!!!! & i already have visions of what everything looks like & i just finished the book today!
DannI Jostes I finished the book about a week ago...
And I think the movie is gonna be better though cause its got some romance, better visions and seems like it has a better ending. The last 20 pages or so in the book seemed like the book was handed to someone else and it was just way too subtle and kinda sad...
Stephanie K I agree. The ending to The Giver in the book just sort of winded down. I watched the movie, and it definitely does a better job of building up to a climax and making it emotionally intense and satisfying. People are complaining that the movie is too different than the book, and I will admit, I was upset about there being such strong romance between Jonas and Fiona (I liked it better in the book when they were just kids with a small bit of affection for each other) but other than that, I have to remember it's hard making books into movies, and considering what they were given to work with, I think they did a pretty impressive job with it. Besides, Jeff Bridges plays the Giver! Awesome!!! XD
Emerald Skye
I like that they're older and there's a bit more romance though because I'm kinda like teens in love, its cute ^-^ Just not sex crazed couples..THOSE, I can't stand xD
They had morning injects or some kind or medication in the morning I don’t understand what’s the difference between that.
We read this book in class for the past month and a half and today we watched the movie.
Just watched this film, never knew it existed, absolutely brilliant!?! Why haven’t they done the sequel yet???
Probably because this is a Harvey Weinstein movie and we all know what happened to him.
@@michaelbolcato192 I don’t know what happened
Honestly I think I'll enjoy the movie more than the book for a number of reasons.
1. Meryl Streep
2. The Book Was Really REALLY SLOW
3. This seems more exciting
At the same time I hope they don't fuck the author over by trying to make a sequel.
But... There is a sequel. There are four books in the series
Nicolas Feild No sequel, just a loose puzzle of 4 books.
@nicolas feild their are four other books but I read them and they have nothing to do with the giver there all separate, not really sequels
Nicolas Feild What??? I never knew that, I only ever read the giver in high school. WHAT???
Sims3loser, The Awkward Simmer Yeah don't feel bad... I didn't know until the year before last but the books are fairly good, like he said though they have little to do with the Giver.
The book was great! I'm sure the movie will be one too(: I hope..
Omg let's go watch it together
I read the book in 7th grade. But I didn't know it took place in the near future. Bikes? Hover craft? Edge? They had to had change things.
grant pefferkorn Exactly why I'm scared to see it. I don't want to resent the story, it was so good! :/
Yea it was
Emmanuel Sanders Yes we should!
Swear I've been looking for this movie for years
I rewatched the trailer right now and IANNNNNN
Even though the movie is different from the book, it still has the same premise; Jonas wasnts to be free from the hidden society and explore the world. I love the ending of the movie. Sure it may not follow the script, but it's still worth watching.
The film is so much more different to the way it is presented in this trailer. I think that I'm in the opposite position to most of the people commenting on this trailer as I have never read the book by Lois Lowry and I sat and watched this movie this morning. The film by Philip Noyce totally had me enthralled from start to finish. I think that Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and Brenton Thwaites were perfectly casted. I just felt for Jonas and how the whole film was a metaphor for breaking free. This film was filmed so elegantly and the use of black and white / colour was perfect. Its not trying to be an action flick or fantasy film but a good analysis of society and the huge overstatement being made about the need to over protect everything. The music was amazing and I couldnt believe that taylor swift was in the movie until I saw her name in the credits. FORGET The Hunger Games. FORGET Divergent / Insurgent. The Giver is none of those. It is not even trying to be like them. Think Pleasantville meets The Truman Show. I know people have said that the novel is better than the film but the movie has inspired me now to read the novel.
I definitely recommend checking out the book and its sequels.
The ending was so frustrating tho
Daniel im not reading this ._.
We are reading this book at my school can't wait to watch this in class.
Talk about giving away the plot in the trailer, wow! The subtle reveals in the book were a huge part of the enjoyment.
I HAVE QUESTIONS
1. Who is that old lady?
2. Why is Jonah so old?
3. Where are the bikes they rode?
4. Where is that ceremony where they all get their jobs?
5. Dafuq are injections?
1.) the lady was the Chief elder
2.) Jonas' age is 16 I think, this is because of too many troubles with child actors
3.) in the movie
4.) near the start of the movie
5.) injections do the same thing as the pills
Awesome Wow, you answered that tremendously well. **without being rude**
Thanks, glad that was helpful. =^_^=
Injections is an equilibrium rip-off.
Lu Cena i think the injections was for the releasing thing (if you havent read the book yet ,sorry that i kind of spoiled some of the story)
This better not turn into some young romance film, because then I'll be pissed.
But I do understand why they're changing parts of the movie
Preci0usP00chie into futuristic divergent crap?!
nicogcid woah woah woah man. Divergent copied the giver. The giver was writen way before Divergent and it seems to follow the story pretty well from what the trailer shows. Thats the exact reason why i never read divergent and ill never see the movie. Its a shit copy of The giver.
*****
I just found out that battle royale came out before the hunger games
CoffeyBean1996 if you've never read or seen divergent, you can't say it copies the giver. I have read both and they are extremely different.
I just finished this on Netflix. Hands down my favorite book.
This is so amazing! I love the series!!
I read the Giver when I was in 7th grade. It was AMAZING and I can't believe this is becoming a movie :D Cant wait!
Hey I read it in 7th grade too.
Same
OMG hi thunderbow
Me too :)
whoa me too :D
I read this book in class and I loved the movie👌🏼❤️
Same
Yes the movie was amazing
My class is reading this and we r going watch it this Friday:DDD
Just watched the movie and I really enjoyed it, I am 16 and I have watched a lot of movies so far but I really felt this one.I see that there are a lot of disappointed people that think the book is much better and I am looking forward to read the book, tomorrow I will buy it ,I am very excited to start reading it 😀
I gotta say this is better than the first trailer. The first trailer was all color which made it seemed like a travesty to Lois Lowry's Novel. But judging by this trailer, it still seems to be set in a black and white world that was once color. This might turn out to be a faithful adaptation after all.
Except the whole let's murder Jonas because he found out about the Giver. I seemed to have missed that part of the story. Last time I read it, they not only knew about the Giver, but assigned Jonas to be his protege. Not Jonas accidentally stumbling over his cabin because he was trying to find the edge of the world because he was a rebel. Maybe you read a different version of the book than I did or just saw a different trailer than the one above because the book The Giver and the trailer The Giver are about as related at the spouse of someone's fourth cousin.
Red Vines i thought so to, because i recall (and its been a while, but) everyone got a job assigned at an age, or something, and he was to be the giver... and the ending- well it was beautiful, but nothing like this
***** Some things have to be changed in a movie, or else it would be predictable and boring
Red Vines we won't know exactly until it comes out, things had to be changed for it to hit the big screen and Lois Lowry is working on the film to so i have faith that it will still be a good film. its more like a modernized version of the book.
Just said to see it sold out to the action and random kissing scenes, I'm pretty sure the only romantic-ish scene was Jonas' "stirring dream" so kinda sad now there's gonna be a whole "I talked her out of the injections" thing
we're reading this book in class and it's really damn good. but why the fuck does jonas look 16 when he's supposed to be 12
because a bunch of 12 year olds acting will be very difficult to manage and made into somthing good . why are people asking stupid questions?
+shuhaib thawoos the movie itself actually wasn't that good (we watched it as a class yesterday). I don't know if it was because of the story where characters can't feel emotion or the writing, but it felt pretty boring. I didn't dislike it entirely, but it felt so different from the book.
mychemicaljulia That i can understand, plus its not a movie you watch at class either. This has almost no action . only story with not many screen grabbing moments.
mychemicaljulia hiring a 12 year old actor is a pain... their acting would be shit... and yes, this is the best book I have ever read in school... now in highschool, it's all shit
um if you think managing 12 yr old actors are hard and it wouldn't be made into something good, you haven't watched um, ANY movies/tv shows. And if it is such a stupid question why give a much more stupid answer?
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen
this movie showed us whats about to happen in 2020 and we were blind and what still happens
Go get your tinfoil hat, lol
More like 2030. But most may not know what Agenda 2030 or UN Agenda 21 is, they won’t even care about anything of it. Many don’t know who Klaus Schwab of the World Economic Forum is, let alone what his intentions are for a “better world”. In fact most people nowadays wouldn’t care about the reality of a global social credit system or how these mass shootings are pushing us more towards a police state, surveillance watching over us in the name of safety and security (you like privacy, well you can’t have it). Imagine people like the chief elder just wanting to barge into your home to discuss what’s mostly false accusations against you. Oh wait, we got police and federal agencies lol. Just sayin…
@@jaypee112233 😂😂
You see what others can't 👍🏽
a movie that is based off the book, does not have to be exactly like the book. this Is really different, they must have had a reason to do those changes.
They probably changed it because they thought that the noticeable adjustments would appeal to the youth. Thus making it action packed and making the love story a HUGE part of the story. But from the comments, the changes seemed to do nothing but make the targeted audience angry
Chanelle Akoto yeeeaaahh pretty much. I'm pretty pissed.
yeah but jonas is like twelve, not 22. and the first half of the movie should be in black and white in my opinion since no one can see colors until about half way through the book. Why are all of the kids over 18. And the book wasnt really action packed. they puked onto a great novel. I hope it gets them a paycheck
Not-An-Asian yeah, my first thought was he is supposed to be a kid. and it was more about discovery and now there won't be the sled scene.
Not-An-Asian but isnt it black and white in the first part? the trailer is.
This book was the worst thing I ever read
You shut you're fucking mouth. It was a great book
It's a free country I can say whatever I want :p
Vriska Serket I want to hate you for saying you hate the book but you're a Homestuck too so it's pretty hard -.-
What?
Gamzee Makara That only applies out in the real world. This is the internet, a fake world. You DO NOT have the freedom to say what you want.
I loved the movie so much , how can you not like it. 😍
I watched the movie when it had just came out and a couple years later read the book without knowing it was linked to that movie, I slowly realized it was through the lines. I had forgotten the title of the movie. The book was really good but I think they also did an incredible job with the movie. It’s extremely hard to make a movie as good as a book because when people read they imagine their own versions of the story they are presented even if all versions have commun aspects. When they watch the movie, it’s never exactly like what they imagined, so they get disappointed often. Not to mention that each detail is explained throughly in a book, while in the movie they have to fill in the gaps with some sort of action because the details are simply being shown on the screen. Details that we tend to miss at times if we don’t pay enough attention. Though I’m an advocate of freedom of speech, I don’t think it’s fair to say that the movie was bad after failing to consider those things.
As someone who read the book, this looks nothing like it. The book takes place in present time, this takes place in a generic future.
Well the outside world may still be modern day hopefully? After all medicine that can make you see black and white and suppress memories, it was a bit futuristic in the book too
Actually no, the book does take place in the future. It's a utopian world that's created eons after our time. We don't have a utopian community right now, and we don't have nearly as advanced technology as they do, like you know, the pills and the whole genetic black-and-white no-color thing. You can tell that it takes place on this same earth and not in another universe, because the Giver says "It's the memories of the whole world" (meaning THIS world) and he gives Jonas memories of what is happening right now on our earth, like birthday parties, Christmas, wars, etc.
Geets R I mean that there are no spaceships and whatnot.
Geets R I agree. And since the memories that are given to Jonas in the book are obviously from a time that we can assume to be our present, it's definitely a logical assumption that they're some time in the future. You had very good points.
***** Well, you never know what they mean by "planes" in the book.
They made the giver more futuristic...I love this book but this is kinda like hunger games know...there was no action in the book.
Then they shouldn't have bothered claiming that they could make it into a movie. It annoys me that books that intelligent kids love and earn accolades like the Newbery Award are deemed not interesting enough for the brainless brats who can't pay attention to things unless there's lots of noises and explosions and pratfalls and fart jokes.
Harry Potter series, The Hunger Games, Holes... (okay, just a coincidence they all start with H)
Very little was changed about these "children's" books, and certainly nothing about the main plot, and yet these were very popular and well-done movies. The problem is that Hollywood thinks they can turn any story into a movie and believes that all movies must be exciting in order to catch a child's attention so when they get rights to a children's book that is not exciting or tells a simpler tale (i.e. Dr. Seuss books), they add a bunch of crap to them to make them more marketable.
Many of my friends read this story when we were younger and some of us (teachers and librarians now) were so excited to hear they were going to make this story into a movie. Now I just feel sick to the stomach seeing what they've done to it. I'm surprised they even bothered with the black-and-white since that would be boring to their target audience (kids who have their faces glued to TVs and portable devices every chance they get).
isn't it supposed to be futuristic? it's a dystopian novel. Sure, maybe they went a bit too far, but at least it's futuristic.
Isabella Silver
The people they made this movie for lack imagination so they have to have everything scream, explode, and flash with lots of lights and colors to keep them engaged. I bet most of them don't even read more than 10 books a year for pleasure.
Joemari Neville Olea No they could do what the book did and rely on things like *dialog* and *proper pacing* to build tension. I mean great films like Citizen Kane, or even the Godfather movies didn't try to be actions flicks with requiem for a dream and hints of dubstep.
Hell the Great Gatsby wasn't like this! And it did well!
this is a great movie! I had to watch it a second time to truly understand it.
i've only read some parts of the book but the movie itself is nice imo, some parts might be different but if a movie is the exact copy and paste of the book i doubt anyone would find it interesting.
I think the movie and the book is wonderful in its own way. I like the movie, it's really touching especially the scenes where they show the memories of the past; the religions, culture, festivals, marriages, animals also the music is few of the reason why i think the movie is good itself. i doubt the book will show you these things, only a movie can. idk how to explain, the movie just shows realness but when you read a book you can only imagine.
One of the most amazing movies this year!!! The pictures are so breathtaking and I hope it'll get the credits it deserves!
this reminds me of divergent and the host combined together
I know I read that in the commets I am just saying it reminds me of it
I know it just the technology that reminds me of divergent and how everything is controlled
sarah easley it is also like "Brave New World". there sure does seem to be a lot of movies about controlling everything now. The movie does not seem to follow the book in the least.
No the host and divergent are like the giver because it came first
yeah same here! haha
Literally just like five minutes ago finished the book and started reading it today...
This looks very different...I WANNA WATCH IT
My school made me read the book and now I’m watching the movie
What in the hell did they do to this story? Why did they bother calling it The Giver when it is nothing like the book? I mean they could have just made a deal with Lowry to steal the only elements they used from her book - bicycling utopian community, a person called the Giver who holds memories of a less sanitized but more colorful past, a black-and-white world turned to color by seeing these memories - and then called it whatever the hell they wanted. Instead, they made people who liked the book falsely believe they were making a movie of it. Well, I hope Ms. Lowry made enough money from this. I've lost respect for her greenlighting this garbage, though.
again, don't judge by it's trailer.
Just clarifying - the author of a book has nothing to do with the movie. They don't make any money and they're not allowed to interfere with the movie making. Like if you're familiar with Percy Jackson, they completely changed the movie, and many PJO fans were angry with Rick Riordan because they believed he changed the movie. He clarified for them. Authors are not allowed to interfere with the movie in any way - it's completely the choice of the people who are making the movie. So yeah, Lois Lowry can't change the movie in any way.
They can be hired to write the screenplay and they do have to give permission to use their intellectual materials. I was also disappointed by Bridge to Terabithia (my students actually cheered at what had been a tear-jerking scene for them in the books because they hated how the movie changed the characters into annoying and spineless people). And she let them do that, turning her son's own story into jokes about peeing and was made mostly to recycle the CGI created for the Chronicles of Narnia movies.
Another case of not every book should be a movie. The movie version of Catch-22, another favorite, is one of the prime examples of why you shouldn't.
Well that's why movies say BASED on the book, it isn't a lm exact translation sadly, only using it as source material, they can then make it as close or as far off as they want. Basically as long as you use the same character names and very basic story pieces you can call it based. They should just say "loosely inspired by the book..." Because that's basically what they are saying
I AGREE WIHT YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS HOW I FEEL ABOUT THIS BOOK!!!!! (but i still think that the movie looks pretty riveting)
I thought Jonas was supposed to be 12???
Yeah exactly, this is why im kinda dissapointed for the movie
ya i know in the book he is
And Katniss was supposed to be around 16. It's hard to find good, young actors I guess.
They want to have an actor that is appealing to all audiences play him.
He was supposed to be 12 but then they changed him to be 16, although personally the movie would be cooler if Jonas was 12 (which he should be to begin with).
I f-fing love this movie and the book!!!!!!!!!!!!! I read it back in Middle School and I loved every minute of it!!!!! This movie is beautiful!!!!!!
I cried so much watching the first one
equilibrium rip off
Yep, bigtime
you're dumb "The Giver" was published in 1993, and equilibrium the movie was made in 2002, so fuck your self you stupid fuck.
just don't make your self look anymore stupid.
FlexArtz I know what u trying to tell me, but use avatar for example, one of the best blockbuster's
There's a guy from one of the countries in Europe he wrote a book called "tihana iz egipta" in 1984 which talks exactly story as in avatar, does that mean avatar is a rip off!?
Everyone remembers the movie that comes out first.
Anyway fuck off now I cbf arguing with u
Batlca you're just making your self look dumb
These complaints were so dumb. Them being 12 only works in book form, I probably wouldn't watch it if they were 12, they'd be shit actors for start. It really shouldn't matter if they changed things. What book doesn't change for the movie? I read the book and loved it, but the movie had so much emotion. I really need to reread the book too.
The movie is awful.
+jack beason *beautiful
I've only read the book xD
But it's amazing.
That's exactly why they made them older. People wouldn't have watched it if they were 12. Which really sucks.
So true
This is the most beautiful movie i ever watched
I haven't readen that book yet and I'm happy with that because I loved this movie.
