    I enjoyed your narration immensely. Your comprehension of the English language is superb and for lack of a better phrase a breath of fresh air.

    I heard somewhere, that the nazgul put armor and clothes on them, because in their pure wraith form they can’t interact with the physical world so well. Don’t know if it is correct tho.
    One question: do we know what the Witch King during his human time was able to cast? I thibk he is the only human recorded who was able to use magic (i didn’t read the books yet so probably i am wrong 😂)

      You're correct about the armor/clothes. Without a "guise" they can't interact with the physical world. We don't know for sure about the identity of wraiths in life beyond that a certain number of them were fallen numenorians so its possible.

      I wish I could experience my first time in Middle Earth again. I've returned many, many times, but nothing beats the first time. You have quite the treat ahead of you. The books are so much better.
      The interaction between the Nazgul and Frodo at the Ford of Bruinen was one of the best parts. I was so disappointed it was changed in the movie.

    Actually, Elves do "age" but not in the same way is humans. They don't get old and wrinkly looking although the weight of their trials can affect them as Elrond was said to look neither old or young. However their physical forms will wear down and fade and they will become only phantoms in the spirit world like the ring wraiths. This, I believe, was actually not supposed to be and was a direct result of Melkor corrupting the world making the elves "immortality" unbearable for them. They could only stay "healthy" and "young" if they were in Valinor, the most uncorrupted and virtually pure lands left on Arda. Valinor was what the who world was supposed to be like before Melkor's coming and the only place where the elves can be truly "undying".

    I like to think that after their steads were washed away, they threw off the robes and invisibly traveled back to Mordor. After centuries of enjoying 'invisibility" from the rings: invisibility would be the state they are most comfortable with. And they simply wore armor at the Battle of Pelennor Fields; for protection, status of rank, and intimidation I would imagine.

    According to letters from Tolkien about the subject Sauron held the rings of the Nazgul and in this way exerted his power over them. In a way a ringwraiths Phylactery was his ring, and so long as it existed so did they. Like Sauron their life force was tied to the One Ring, and after that melted their life force dissipated. Sauron himself was too powerful a spirit to truly die, but became powerless because he expended so much of his power so that he could not hold himself in the created world and faded into the spirit realm, or wraith world. Even so, for all of Saurons control over them the nazgul were prone to wander aimlessly about when not under a specific order. Even then they were largely independent, but their perception of reality was so warped by the spirit world that they had trouble to understand how the shape of the world worked. For them their world was a continuing nightmare with no escape, a testament ot the malice of Sauron!

    Great video! I wonder if the Nazgul wore clothing/armor for psychological reasons. Some attempt to cling to a lost humanity.

    They were not "...the Black Riders, the Ringwraiths, also known as the Nazgûl...", they were the Nazgul, also known as the Black Riders, the Ringwraiths, BIG difference

    Constructive criticism here: you need to work on you pronunciations. It almost sounds like AI (yes?) looking to get clicks.. No offense if you're real.

    The Nazgul wore robes at the beginning of the tale because they needed to appear as human as possible. They were crossing over middle earth not only questioning about the Shire but also trying to sell allegiance with Mordor before the war. They would need a human like form to be able to interact with the peoples of Middle Earth.

      You are right. But that doesn't explain why, for example, they didn't choose to become invisible during the Weathertop attack.

      Awe Yes! I wonder... I have a theory, but I have to ask: What happens if a Nazgul takes off a ring or can they?

  • @Erik-um1zn

    I'm not sure I agree with you on the Nazgul immortality. Bilbo described the beginning of the process as being like butter scrapped over too much bread. It is like a barrel of beer being continually watered down, to use the Tolkien Professor's analogy. At a point they became permanently invisible. Gandalf explains to Frodo that he was allowed to see thing 'on the other side' when he wore the One Ring. That is what the Rings did, give the user access to the 'other side,' the spirit world per se. He also tells Frodo that at the fords, he was half in their world already, and the Nazgul could see him and could have seized him. It would seem that after heavy usage of the Rings, the user is permanently drawn into this world rather than just half in as Bilbo/Frodo where upon donning the Ring. There after they would clothes and help to take shape in the visible world; it could be that they would abandon these visible shapes and return fully into the wraith world to avoid physical harm like drowning/falling from a great height due to a flying mount shot out from under them. I would not say they were completely immune to harm/being killed when they took on visible shapes, just harder to do so. It would seem they no longer needed to eat, drink, sleep etc. though.
    Also, is should be noted that there is a difference in power between the Witch King and the other Nazgul, and even some among the various other eight Ringwraiths. Most of the sorcererous power mentioned here can be attributed to the Witch King alone, as far as we know. Their main and chief weapon was fear, the Black Breath, and it was very potent indeed.

    More on The Nazgul, please. Maybe something on the army of the dead. Maybe, even, more upon the Barrow-wites. Thanks. It was a terrible pleasure.

    how the nazguls can control fire but are susceptible to? (Aragorn attacked the Nazguls with fire). It doesn't make sense to me. Great video as always.

    • @middleearthtales
      @middleearthtales  Рік тому

      Thank you! Actually, Aragorn did not fight the Nazguls in the attack on Weathertop as in the movie. Yes, just before Frodo faints, he sees Aragorn coming with burning wood in both hands, but there is no battle scene like in the movie. Later, Frodo learns that the Nazgul have retreated for some reason, but it is unlikely that it was the burning wood in Aragorn's hands.

    I still don't really understand how the hobbits manged to dodge the Nazgal. Why didn't they just kill everyone in the Shire and Bree until they found the ring?

    • @Crafty_Spirit
      @Crafty_Spirit 6 місяців тому

      That would have taken more time than continuing to track the Hobbits, which they did fairly succesful. Frodo and company took a detour and none of the other Hobits could have known and tell the Nazgul where Frodo was heading to.
