I'd still go with the CHL
The answer is it depends. If you’re a 3rd-7th rounder and you’re not going to be in the NHL for 3+ years then college is the best path. We see players like Adam Guadette and Dylan Sikura who go late in the draft and highly benefit from spending time in college and coming to the NHL when they’re ready. This because you’re playing against tougher competition which can really build your game. Basically if you’re a late rounder or a late bloomer college is the best by far. Although if you’re an early rounder and you believe you can play within 2 years then the CHL is the best. The CHL is made to feed the NHL. The CHL works with the NHL to feed them top talent. The CHL has a lot of games and is a lot like playing pro-hockey so the transition to the NHL is easier.
Max Lee but you don't know until you're 18 if you're going to evrn get draft. And if you play 1 game in the chl at 16 you can't switch and go the ncaa

For me being 19 years old and playing junior A this year. NCAA D1 would be my path only because I can play from 20-24 + get a degree on the side. A lot of life skills can be learned going the NCAA route as well, time management being the most important...
CHL without a doubt. Better players come out of those leagues than the NCAA. It’s just a fact.

@@drewkerpan1451 There is no division 2 college hockey, any division 2 school has the option to play up or down in college hockey. That is why Minnesota has only one full division school but 5 division one college hockey programs.
How I wanna get to the NHL:
Get drafted into the CHL
Go to world juniors
Go to the NCAA
Go to the worlds juniors
get drafter in the first, second or third round
if you sign a contract with a CHL team, you're considered ineligible for the NCAA. For some reason, they consider CHL contracts professional contracts even if you don't get paid.
Just go from highschool spend about two seasons somewhere else, and then be an NHL superstar

I live in Canada too, but I'd have to say NCAA. It's growing a lot and more players are coming out of NCAA each year now. I had multiple WHL/Chl teams try to sign me from age 16-19 before I went to play NCAA. At the time I wanted to sign but was strongly advised to go the NCAA route. That was the best decision I ever made. The level of hockey is faster and stronger than junior hockey, and many of the schools have electric atmospheres. Playing in front of thousands of your classmates every game or going into other teams barns and getting absolutely roasted by their student sections is like no other experience in hockey. I'm actually in this video lol

Thanks for this video! As a Norwegian hockey fan I'm always curious to find out how hockey works in North America, especially JR hockey. One of our countries top prospects Mathias Emilio Pettersen is going to play in the NCAA (Denver College) this upcoming season. He was signed to go there when he was only 13-14 years old. When he was 10, he had one of the most popular prospect videos on youtube. He got drafted in the 6th round by the Calgary Flames this summer. He didn't have his best days in the USHL league which explains his late pick, but I know he is a hard worker and he is doing great so far in this years summer camp with the Flames. I'm hoping he can get solid stats with Denver College and become the next Norwegian in the NHL. So far we only have two (Mats Zuccarello and Andreas Martinsen).

Well done my friend, I think it comes down to a player by player scenario. Each league could be better for different players. The. NCAA certainly has been producing more top players to the NHL in recent years and I expect that trend to continue.

In my opinion the chl is better because you get more media coverage and there is way more fans idk how many people a college rinkholds or the average chl rink holds but the London Knights arena holds just under 10k I believe and they usually have quite a big crowd there

Josh Brown I live in a college hockey town man. Come to a University of North Dakota hockey game here. Just under 12,000 people The Ralph holds. Sold out every game. And the arena is considered the Taj Mahal of hockey arenas.

It would be interesting if NCAA schools could contact kids as early as CHL teams can. Most top end Canadian kids are already swooped up by CHL before NCAA rules even allow colleges to contact them.

More players come out of the chl but even though there's less NCAA players there usual come out more high end mainly because of the age group difference.

It does vary person to person, however I might lean towards NCAA as the lighter schedule gives more time for physical development hitting the gym etc, however county of origin does influence it a bit as well.

It all comes down to preference of the player and their family. One thing to remember about D1 hockey is that there is a glut of American players with D1 talent that drop down to D3 college. So until the NCAA adds about ten to fifteen more D1 programs competition to make these teams even w scholarships is intense!

As a Canadian, you definitely make a good point. What I noticed is that the USA has a lot more money (they can afford better coaches, trainers, equipment etc...) and a lot more players to choose from, so I also think it's a matter of time where it's closer to equal. Also some players that don't make it to the NHl by 20 from the CHL go play in the States.
I would choose the NCAA if I were a prospect, but as a GM I would rather be choosing from the CHL. My reasons behind this are that as a prospect I do think education is an important thing, because not everybody is gonna be a “generational talent” also what if u get hurt, you’ll need something to fall back on and getting an education and degree helps w that. As a GM I would want the CHL because this way u get more time to have ur prospect on ur team to help build towards championships and some NCAA prospects like to play all 4 years, and sometimes don’t even sign w their respective teams. See Kevin Hayes and Jimmy Vesey.
You should do videos going over other leagues, like KHL, SM-Liiga, SHL, USHL, DEL, etc.

CHL is way better opportunity then College. First scouts most of the time pay attention to the CHL. Second the CHL offers players scholarships for college and pay for everything. Third, there are more successful (hockey wise) former CHL players than NCAA. Plus the CHL let's hockey players play real hockey which involves fights and not the NCAA making the men play almost women's hockey rules. One big thing though that the NCAA has over the CHL is that fact that on paper it's a easier transition to the pro game with playing against grown ass men.

NCAA, I'm American, I get a fall back career with an education, and a lot of skills you wouldn't get if playing in the CHL
Kind of Funny that Toews a Canadian player was brought up through NCAA, And Kane an American player came up through the OHL in London. Dosn't happen that often and both of them ended up forming part of the Blackhawks core which won three cups.
NCAA Div1 Hockey is full of Canadians. Some college teams have 90% Canadians on their roster. So it's not really that big of a surprise. And the CHL is still the place to be for top prospects so also no surprise that Kane played in the OHL.
In my experience, potential elite offensive players can choose equally between the NCAA and CHL, with similar future success. This is because elite offensive players can afford to make physicality a small part of their game.
But for other types of players, the CHL is the way to go.
The CHL is a tougher league by far. And speaking as someone who’s watched the CHL closely for decades, it is a proving ground for young men in terms of the physical side of the game. And this pays dividends for those moving onto the NHL that are clearly lacking in NCAA players, who never have to worry about fighting, for example.
Example: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fights Justin Holl. The Nuge played in the CHL, Holl in the NCAA.
Even though Nuge is far from a fighter, he beats the tar out of Holl, who is the larger man. This was probably the moment Toronto decided that Holl had to go. Because playoff hockey at the NHL level is a combat sport. Toughness is very important. Not nearly so for the regular season.
Just look at who wins the Con Smythe Trophy every year. It’s almost always a player from the CHL.
And BTW, just because college players are older does not mean the competition is tougher. If it was there would be more players from college getting drafted.
The top college team would loose to, for example, the London Knights. That is a no brainer.
Many players wait a couple years to play in US college, because they went undrafted in the CHL.

The college ranks seems to be preparing players to be ready to jump directly to the nhl must better than the chl. Most 30-40 pt ncaa guys these days make the jump to the nhl these days, while ppg chlers still require ahl time. No issue with either, but I say the ncaa is really proving it's a big time option now
NCAA all the way, gives you time to mature mentally and physically. If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to choose between them, pick the best path for you. As for me, I would pick the college route
NCAA is the route I would take. If you are talented enough to get into a relatively good hockey school, the facilities will be better, the training is better, way more practice time compared to game time, and potentially a longer development time. Not to mention getting a great education. Also, I would better control my destiny. EXAMPLE: Matt Read. Played for Bemidji state. He turned down pro offers and kept going back to school until he eventually got the offer he wanted from Philadelphia. Was a great decision by him to enter free agency. You could also do what Adam Fox did: Drafted by the Flames, didn't want to play for them (and told them as much) kept electing to go back to Harvard and continue to develop and play at a high level until the Flames finally traded him to Carolina in that Hamilton trade.
In regards to the CHL, they definitely get more support from the NHL, and that has more to do with the NCAA rules in regards to putting money in Hockey Programs. There was a decision made maybe ten to fifteen years ago that allowed the NHL to pay a "buffer company" that represented the NCAA so that they could better advertise the NCAA game globally, and put more money legally into hockey programs. You can actually see when the NCAA implemented this plan, and the uptick in quality hockey players coming out of NCAA. But for a long time the NHL was investing hundreds of millions of dollars into the CHL and only a couple hundred grand into the NCAA. When that started to change, the NCAA programs really started to take off.
The games vs practice time is a debate I love having with people. While a 68 game schedule prepares kids for the pro grind, in my opinion, it also creates horrible habits from over playing, being tired, and over worked. With less practice time you can't fix the little details, or pound home certain things (IE: a forecheck) when you play like 3-4 games a week and practice maybe twice. And those practices suck because the guys are so tired. I can tell you from experience that the higher the level you play, it's the small details that matter, knowing your role and having your play be reactionary through repetition. And that knowledge is gained, again in my opinion, more through practice than through game experience. It's also been my experience that if I were to try to compare the typical player that comes out of each league, I would say that the CHL player tends to have more skill set/ natural talent. But the NCAA player is more professional, more ready for practice, and being in the weight room and dedicating themselves to getting better.
Another thing to look at is the way CHL players are treated. For instance, this past year saw the WHL with the most trades ever at the trade deadline and it was celebrated by a lot of people heavily involved in the WHL for how exciting it was and how it was good for the league... And I sat there and was horrified by it because these are 16-19 year old kids having to up route their lives and move. Some kids might go from being in Everett Washington to Swift Current Saskatchewan in a night, it's a huge culture shock. Not to mention, some kids get traded multiple times in a career, that's hard on a teenagers psyche. I know kids who've been moved upwards of a half a dozen times in their five year CHL career. That's not easy with hockey, school, or just plain ol' growing up. But some people will also tell you it's part of the preparation of pro hockey. I worked with a guy who had a great five year career in the WHL, and he would not let his little brother play in the WHL behind him. Said the WHL was too much of a meat grinder to kids. Told him to go to NCAA if he could instead. While I believe the CHL does a great job with their scholarship money, by the time the over-age players are able to take advantage of it, they have been brainwashed by the idea that they are "PRO" ready and often choose ECHL deals over the scholarship. If you don't use your scholarship within two years of you finishing your CHL career, you become ineligible for it.
It's an interesting debate, but if my fake son is ever good enough that NCAA programs and CHL teams come knocking at our door, I will be more apt to send my kid to the NCAA. If it turns out that school is too hard, or for whatever reason we felt his development would be better in a CHL enviroment, it is a whole lot easier to go from NCAA to CHL... Due to NCAA rules, it is extremely hard to play in the CHL then try to transfer to an NCAA program. Just this week there is a kid whose done it with UND, but it seems as though he is an exception to the rule. He will also have to sit out basically a year and a half before he can play with UND as well.

Getting that degree helps when you maybe last 1 season in the NHL.

If I was a sure fire number 1 pick I'd go the OHL route (based on where I live, that would be the league I'd probably play in) because I wouldn't want to waste a colleges time as a one and done player but otherwise, I'd prefer the NCAA route.
I feel if a kid has a lot of talent and is a sure fire 1st round talent the chl is a great option, but if they seem to be lower in the draft rankings at 15 and 16 the ncaa might be the better choice. The extra years to grow seem to benefit the late round picks. Johnny hockey is a perfect example. A 4th round pick that needed time to mature in college. While he had all the talent in the world he was really small his draft year. While he is no beast size wise playing against the bigger older competition helped him adapt to the pro style bodies he was going to be playing against.
Saying the NCAA is tougher competition is kinda misleading ya when ur 18 it is but when ur 17 (most players draft year) you’ll be playing JR A or USHL neither on the level of the CHL and for every year of CHL u get 1 year of free school so the education should be a wash
I guess it depends on who's perspective you're talking about. If I'm a team looking for the best talent I'm going CHL 100% but if I'm a young player deciding between the two the NCAA might be more appealing because you get an education and if you don't like the team that drafted you then you can play out your college career then sign wherever as a free agent when you're done

D1 hockey has very little hitting and rough housery when I watch. CHL has more of that. D1 has no fighting at all. CHL does. What is point of being stronger and older if can’t fight and bang each other up? But D1 has fantastic football funded facilities. I went to college and the food is great. CHL depends on billet families to feed them. Only I lived in Quebec for their food.

The highest skilled players are from the CHL, McDavid, Stamkos, Crosby, Tavares etc. However, those were all picked 1st overall. 3-7th rounders you have a much better bet of picking a player from the NCAA than other leagues. Also, you'll find stronger players come from the NCAA, Boser, Eichel, Towes Werenski. Top 3 Picks CHL sure. But I'll take my Walhstrom Keller Werenski picks 4-30
One is a hockey program the other is a varsity sport. I think it depends on their career planning. I like the games at this level more.

When you go to a game at the Ralph, all the scouts are there to keep an eye on the draft picks. They observe and report how they are progressing...
The beauty of hockey is that you can be drafted 18. Similar to other European models. They should promote the lower level teams as school should not be so intertwined with sport...
Since the chl u can join once u r 16 go to that get those benefits then stick with it if u see a future in hockey if not go to the ncaa that is what almost all players in the Canada’s ncaa do

The CHL pays a year of tuition for every year a player is in the CHL. Players can also play hockey at canadian universities after their time in the CHL giving them 8 years of high level hockey if they don't make it to the NHL

NCAA is a marriage between athletics and education. There's only so much athletic scholarship to go around. University's like to be able to award academic scholarships alongside the athletic scholarships. It depends on how much education is prioritized. If they don't want to study anything then CHL is better. In the really rare case that you are in the top 15, then it doesn't matter and you'll be found/drafted no matter where you play. The CHL will allow you tryout for your NHL team without losing eligibility (rare senario).

Bobby Orr said a top player bound for the NHL should jump start his career by playing junior hockey.
I am just coming across this video now, 4 years late, so forgive me for that. Just to defend the CHL on education, they provide 1 free year of post secondary education, for each year played in the CHL. So if you play 3 years in the CHL you get 3 years free to any college/university/trade school you attend, if you do not sign a pro contract with a team, that includes pro teams in Europe or low level pro teams in North America.
So that was left out of this video, not sure why that is a well known fact about the CHL and I personally know people who got free university as a result of this system. Also, if you play in CHL chances are that someone will give you a job based on that and you will have tons of good connections and be able to use those to get a job doing something outside hockey, I also have seen this happen.
So nothing perfect, but the CHL should get points for providing its players who do not turn their JR careers into pro careers a chance at education.

In my opinion Jack Hughes should’ve done at least one year in the NCAA like his brother and some of his teammates are doing now.

The top NCAA team vs the top CHL team would be a great match up but the NCAA players are bigger, stronger, and older. If I were a GM I would rather take the kid out of college due to the maturity levels. 23-24 vs 19-20 year old is a huge jump. But that’s just my opinion. Either way it’s great hockey and that’s all that really matters.

Another advantage for the NCAA is that players can jump from college to AHL if their NHL team thinks they're ready. In the CHL they can't do that only go directly in the NHL.
Most guys get drafted from the ushl, not NCAA. Important distinction.

Because there's a bunch of 16 17 year Olds playing in the league
dilution of talent. There is about ten times as many major junior teams as there are serious University programs, only a fourth of the Division ones teams have the staff and coaches to develope talent. A lot of Div 2 and Div 3 programs are being preserved in the South and Bible belt because enough North Eastern, and Minnesota boys end up going there for college, and find they are able to walk on when they had no chance in hell of making the team. I saw a Div. 3 game between Citadel and Alabama(the flagship university) in 2011/2012 I am wholly convinced would have been slaughter by an average High School team in Minnesota, Michigan, or Maine.

Playing 1 chl game loses your ncaa rights so most hidden gems are playing junior a our local team just had a guy get a scholarship to bowling green and now he plays in the ushl didnt get drafted but still 2 more drafts for that

All statistics show the CHL is still the best league for development. There are more NHL players coming out of US College (and USHL, NAHL) simply because the US hockey grassroots are growing, not because the NCAA is getting better at developing players.
Hopefully NCAA will be on the NHL 19 video game?
College is more fun to watch that’s for sure
College programs are not made equal. Minnesota, MN State, Bemidji, UM Duluth, Wisconsin, ND are the elite in terms of talent, or rather recruit talent, there is simply no more competative region for high school aged players than Eastern Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. In terms of coaching, east coast fairs a bit better, since there is just better opportunities where you wont have a Badger Bob type coach locking down the job for thirty years. If the program was not Old WCHA it generally is not that good. The good thing about the CHL is that it has kept hockey a low-middle class game. Outside of Minnesota, Wisconsin, N+S Dakota, and maybe parts of new england, hockey is becoming the rich kids sport.
