The first car I bought was a Lancia Beta coupé 2L. Had it for my 19th birthday. Even if I bought other cars after, it's still my daily car since this day. Love it !!
As a 2-3 year old child I still remember our family car: A Beta Coupe 1,8L dark blue. After almost 45 years, this car still haunts my dreams. I wish I could find one. Not necessarily high capacity engine. I just love the looks of it. Wheels like your Lancia's', but the dashboard was the first edition (which I love more), as well as the front of the car which was the pre-facelift. I wish you all the best with your car! You are lucky indeed!!! Greedings from Athens, Greece!
My dad had one, I remember sitting in it as a kid. I remember my dad driving it to the limit, I remember the feel of the seats, the smell, the sound of the engine, I remember my dad throwing me to the side of the car when driving around a roundabout. I loved the look, especially the dash. Then I remember the rust, I remember it sitting not being driven… I remember the day it was dragged away. I don’t know what happened. It was gunmetal in colour, it was such a cool car. I wish I had it.
What a fantastic car and in such perfect condition. I used to own a 1,8 BETA COUPE HPE, but not the Volumex (and NOT Volume x !). Amazing car and its road handling was unbelievable. Like a train on rails !!! And the sound of the original exhaust, unforgettable !!!
Thank you for sharing this gem. As a kid i so wanted the Beta HPE volumex. My dad had the trevi saloon version. Still to date the best petrol 4 pot engine he's ever known.
For those who don't know, the Lancia Beta Coupé (and HPE) had the most comprehensive instrument cluster of its time and then some. Speedo, tach, water temp, oil pressure + temp + level, voltmeter, and of course fuel level. Almost unheard of today, impossible in the '70s. True Lancia!
The problem with them though was the panels. They were so thin that they could bend & warp with the wind & be prone to rusting very quickly. I think this problem was fixed on later gen model's though.
Extraordinary..... These things were hen's teeth even when new. I am staggered to see one at all, never mind in this condition. What a splendid, splendid thing. A bringer of joy.
I had owned 3 Lancia Beta HPE's in my younger years. Still have a soft spot in my heart for Lancia's. I wished they still made them. This video brought back a lot of good memories. Thank you.
I have owned two Lancia beta 1800 coupe, a 1976 and a 1980 model, I have never regretted anything as much as when I got rid of these nice cars, it is so nice and fun a car to own and drive, I used both two all year round and I have nothing bad to say about Lancia.
What an exceptional car Steve, and glad you are it’s custodian - a true enthusiast. This video has cemented the fact this is the next Lancia I want in my collection (if I ever find one)! 👌🏻
I was very fortunate to own one in the early-mid 80's . An upgrade from the standard 2000 coupe. Beautiful to drive , however a real rust bucket. Wish I'd hung on to it though.
Sweet! I have a hopped up Lancia Zagato Spyder FI. 2L with a nice FI. Engine has been hopped up by a Fiat Lancia Trained Mechanic, a bit of betaboyz and modified coil over Konis. I have subscribed, Thanks for your lovely share! I have seen a few nice ZA lancia Beta cars. Cheers!!! Oh, I also have a 77 scorpion as well. Very Montehospital. You have inspired me to get the Zag back on the road this weekend.
Amazing car, worth all the money one has to put into it in order to keep it streetworthy, init? Seriously: kudos to you to keep it in such condition, you have my utmost respect. We've been driving our Spyder from 1980 for the last 4 years, it was the best car-related decision of my lifetime. Despite of its demands regarding maintenance.
My first car was a Lancia Beta Coupe. Same lovely red colour as this one in the video except it had leather seats. I loved the car so much and as soon as I saw it I fell in love with its sleek lines. This was at time when 18 years olds wanted Golf's and Corsa's. It was so unreliable though, carbs were always out of whack, the expansion tank kept splitting, electrics were dodgy, I would randomly lose lights at night and one time I came to a stop in a car park and the front brake pads fell out of the calipers. Literally, heard a clunk, clunk and brake pads were sitting on the floor in the car park. However......... I still loved that car. My claim to fame was that the light stalks on the Lancia Beta Coupe were exactly the same as the ones in the Ferrari Testerossa!
What a rare and beautiful thing that is. I had a lovely 2000ie, a not so lovely 1600 S1 coupe and Monte too at one point. Still miss the Monte but that 2000ie was a fine car. So lucky your car spent time in SA!!
In the USA Lancia shipped the 1.4 engine, but my 1974 was simply the best handling car I've ever driven. I own an Audi TT now which is garaged most of the time, and with the turbo engine it is much quicker, but in no way does the TT handle as well as the Beta Coupe.
Great cars. I owned 2 Beta's from this range, a 1978 2000 Coupe and a 1981 Spyder. Rare to see any Beta on the road even then and now the ones that are left are probably locked away and used for summer days.
I've never seen 1 in person in America but this is just an amazing car! You can tell you LOVE this car. All I know about Lancia is from buying the Rally matchbox car last year AND remote control cars are very into the Lancia right now. I think LC racing has the Rally and a cheaper smaller 100.00 dollar Mini Lancia Rally is popular right now. BOTH RC's run very well and look scale.
Steve may be the Guy who did the clutch on my HPE back in 1989/90... I think Sparks' charged me £320 (all on credit card) then the head gasket went and my favourite ever car had to go! I still love the shape of the Beta coupe & HPE series (not the saloon mind you!)..
I almost bought a Lancia Scorpion, brand new.......I regret it! Back in the 70’s,that’s when Fiat and Lancia had dealerships in America (throughout) a very attractive automobile, just sitting on the floor would excite, especially with that Italian car smell and the leather, wow! ............it was a poor man’s Italian exotic.
It's best that you didn't, Lancia Scorpion's were a very dangerous car new. The problem with them was the brakes, they would just lock up & send the car spinning into a tree. Lancia recalled the car to fix the issue by removing the brake servo, so then you had no brakes at all. Nice looking car of course, like all Lancia's. But it's just too dangerous, don't drive it if you want to live.
I had a teacher of mine (and later friend!) who owned a Lancia Beta which he bought in 1982. It didn't die until 2005, and not due to rust. Not that it was infailible in that regard, but whats a little crinkling on the rear pillars between friends?😉
Hello, I have one just like your but with 120.000.kilometers and it is in the same red color but it is model for Europe and it is left side steering wheel. It is 2.0 liters volumex compressor. I wonder how much money could I get for it and It is rust free.
Great car, congrats! Just one thing... As Italian, I cannot hear your pronunciation of Lancia without having stomach aches! The correct pronunciation is like it's written Lancha. Lan-cha. Repeat: Lan-cha.
Sold my breg hpe when I was 17, 31 years ago due to rust if only we new just how rare they are now £150 ahhh all the ones I have seen on here don't have the rear sofa like rap round back seats mine were brown with hpe print on them that the one thing I loved about them way ahead of there time.
Hi back in 1985 I brought a lancia HPI ESTATE in blue and silver 2 ltr twin carb a fantastic car to drive ,until wifey parked in up the back of 3 other car at the traffic lights and then sold to a chap who was going to rebuild the front end and put it in his collection .On the hunt again for another , so off to Horndean to see a true English gent who had a red one for sale through auto trader , full service history and a 6 year rust warranty by the HERON COMPANY,, not worth the paper it was written ON.This time in red 2 ltr fuel injection HPI , out for a drive one evening coming up to the M3 ,at well over the speed limit in the middle lane a volume x pulled in to the inside lane ,I thinking well your not going to beat him looked in the mirror and a police car lights flashing coming up behind in the fast lane ,I took my foot off as the volume x did he scratched his head ,I looked at the police car, both police men put their thumbs up and his passenger mouthed if you want a race come on then I looked at volume x, by this time he had both hands off the wheel ,shaking his head .HAPPY LUCKY DAYS .
At least get the name of the car right. It was either a Beta HPE 2000, HPE2000 IE or HPE 2000 Volumex. There were also earlier cars with smaller 1600cc and 1800cc engines. There was a 1300cc for the coupe and the sedan.
Had one...my windscreen fell down one night onto the dashboard after snow covered it and the window surround gave way. Great beauty though the Beta VX coupe... like an italian/smaller 635csi coupe !
1272 VX Coupes made, approx. 220 RHD. Hard to say how many survivors but that's very rare. About 20 of those RHD models are here in NZ and almost all are minters.
@@paulthorpe766 Yes well they were badly built cars. You need to buy the model's built in 1984 as they rectified alot of the problems I think & hope. Great cars these beta coupe models but the volumex is not the best engine to have, it starts off feeling like a 3 litre but as you rev it runs out of puff. The ie 2.0L is very smooth but not as exciting as the 2.0 carb engine. The 1.6 revs like a lotus but has no torque. I have had all these beta models years ago and still have a beta spyder 2.0L in roso corsa 160. never used it for 10 years now! I need an 8 day week really.
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. I had 5 Lancias, the 3rd was an HPE that suffered from people behind not paying attention. Replaced with a Gamma coupe, and I miss that car even now.
