    This is actually quite funny - a fellow UA-camr from Toronto who lives in Berlin did a German grocery store video just a couple of days ago, and she stumbled upon the very same Pumpernickel bread and was also wondering what exactly was up with the couple in the photo.
    If you want Senf that's not so spicy as in not spicy at all you should try the blue one ("süßer Senf"). I myself really dislike the taste of regular Senf but the sweet one I love.
    Fleischsalat is pretty hit and miss though even here. There's some incredibly crappy ones out there which seem to have been carefully engineered to provide the most disgusting taste ever. Since I can never remember which are the bad ones and which the good I usually stay clear of all of them at the supermarket.
    But it's nice to see they sell authentic German products instead of local products that are just made to look like German. I remember I once saw a "Black Forest gateau" at the Delhi airport which sure had all the ingredients of the original but apart from that it looked as if the person who made it had never ever seen the original. It was clearly an Indian product just made to look German, probably designed after a washed-out photo of the original.
    Although I never traveled to West Germany by train during the days of the Cold War, we often did family trips by car as my father's family is from West Germany. And because we were traveling with two dogs we always had to have them examined by the official GDR border vets which could take several hours before we were allowed to enter the transit highway.
    Yes, back in the times of the wall a car trip from Berlin to Hamburg (~250 km, less than an hour by ICE now) would easily take you a day - just the one way car ride. So glad these times are over!
    Oh, and just to give credit where credit is due: The wafer thingies you were showing are actually Austrian.
    Speaking of Austria: One thing I have to strongly disagree with you on: Maggi Würze - which there was probably not a single household in Germany in the seventies and eighties that did not have at least one bottle of it at any given time - does not taste like soy sauce at all! That's blasphemy! Proof: I don't like soy sauce but like all civilized human beings I like Maggi Würze. You should be praying I won't tell the Maggi gods about your sin next time I go to Switzerland!

    • @ulrichlehnhardt4293
      @ulrichlehnhardt4293 6 років тому +8

      + Thiesi Maggi was inventend in 1886 and since then has been in every German household (especially for stews and soups).. until 2005 it was actually made with soy! They then changed it and only use wheat! So Kelly is not so wrong to say that it tastes a bit (!) like soy sauce..

    • @Thiesi
      @Thiesi 6 років тому +6

      Ulrich Lehnhardt Interesting. I personally find its taste to be significantly different from that of soy sauce. And yes - I particularly remember how we added it to basically all stews my mom ever made.
      When we were preparing for dinner and setting the table, getting the big bottle of "Maggi" out was as natural as putting salt, pepper, and cutlery on the table.
      And that also explains why I don't buy it and probably haven't bought it ever since I moved out of my parents' house: I can't cook so I never make stew.
      I wonder though how many bottles of it the average German of that generation has consumed during their life? ;-)

    • @ulrichlehnhardt4293
      @ulrichlehnhardt4293 6 років тому +8

      well, of course you are right that it IS not soy sauce and you should not use it instead of soy sauce but the taste can remind you of it. I perhaps use two small bottles a year.. I try not to exaggerate. Maggi is not the high art of cooking. You better try to create taste without using Maggi - but we all fail sometimes, don't we?

    • @Thiesi
      @Thiesi 6 років тому +1

      Ulrich Lehnhardt Yeah, I can see now how its taste does resemble that of soy sauce in some way.
      It might not be the high art of cooking but I find it quite remarkable that there's something out there you can actually add to so many different dishes.
      As I said - I can't cook but I can heat up stuff and I totally see myself adding it to meat and other stuff, probably even to salads, in the near future. Just have to go out and buy it. Will also go for the small bottle for starters though just to see how it goes.

      + Hauke Holst: kommt auf die Fleischtheke an. Wenn Du die Fleischtheke im Supermarkt meinst, dann ist der Fleischsalat aus dem Eimer und der Gleiche wie der Abgepackte. Bei einem echtem, guten und sauberen (!) Fleischer ist der Fleischsalat ein Gedicht. Ich persönlich kaufe aber nur noch den Abgepackten, da der frische schon öfter bei mir zu Magen/Darm Probleme führte (bin da aber auch empfindlich). Mir persönlich schmeckt der Abgepackte von POPP am Besten - (Homann geht noch so lala) alles andere ist eigentlich nur schrecklich!

    An interesting thing I noticed is when Kelly tells us about all the people she met in this German store who were complete strangers, but were quite willing to talk at length to her, one even recounting her memories from living in Germany. Is behavior like that typically German?

    • @mojojim6458
      @mojojim6458 6 років тому +4

      crappiefisher 13 Since the people she was talking to were either born in Germany who moved to the US or born in the US of German heritage (as we phrase it), the openness they exhibited could be a proof of the strength of environment over genetics, or nature over nurture. Or the adaptation of fruit.

    • @crappiefisher1331
      @crappiefisher1331 6 років тому +2

      yeah i would agree that at least "culture" is not in your "blood" aka genes.. i would even assume that someone who moves from germany to america - or vice versa - after 10 years living in their new country would become more american/german, because of adopting the cultural norms of the new society they live in

    • @rickr7333
      @rickr7333 6 років тому +5

      My belief is that the reason American's are so easy to strike up a conversation with strangers is due to the immigrant factor, that when everyone is away from home, with no friends, and are feeling uneasy, they are much more willing to show kindness to strangers. This, I believe is the American friendliness that is often mis-characterized by Europeans as falseness.

    • @mojojim6458
      @mojojim6458 6 років тому +1

      Heinz Yes, the Lb is the abbreviation for pound (odd that it involves the letter "L", I know) and means $8.99 per pound as an example.

    • @zorrothebug
      @zorrothebug 6 років тому +3

      it's lb because it originates from libra pondo = weighted pound.

    • @crappiefisher1331
      @crappiefisher1331 6 років тому +3

      ofc it is the price per LB, but still expensive.. if i am not wrong 1 LB is about 500 grams, even a little less..
      in germany you would pay (depending on the brand) about 5 euro including tax already (about 5.90$) for 2.2 LB (1 kilogram)
      but i also think that is nothing to wonder about. first of all the US in general is more expensive compared to germany when it comes to food... add the fact that she lives in the DC area and there you go...

    Kelly (& Misha); you are both so fun to watch and learn from! Guten tag from Canada... I am 1/2 German on my mother's side, (she is from Celle, another very beautiful city) I was fortunate to visit Germany in 1990, with my parents and my much-adored Oma. It was very soon after the Wall came down, and a trip I remember with so much love and happiness. We travelled over 2,000 kms. by car...Munich, Mainz, Kassel, Hessen, Ulm, Düsseldorf and Wolfenbüttel (both staying with relatives), Celle to see my mom's childhood home, Uelzen, Bremen, Berlin, and the beautiful Bavarian Alps and Neuschwanstein (have you been there?) There's definitely more but I can't remember them all! We were so lucky to stay as guests in the most quaint and friendly gasthäuser, ate such amazing food every day, and learned so much about this stunningly beautiful country! I completely agree with so many points you have said in your videos. OMG, the Autobahn is incredible! To me it was like we were driving on glass, not a single bump, crack, pebble... and SO much pride in the history of the cities and marktplatz areas-- no litter, no graffiti, all the gorgeous timber buildings so beautifully restored and cared for. It was a time that I will never forget and I sooo wish I could take my husband and 2 children to see what we did 😢 Thankfully, through youtube, I've shared a lot with them, and given them a tiny taste of part of my heritage.
    I so wish this store was here in Canada... when I was young, my Oma and Opa took me to several homey, quaint German bakeries/delicatessens near their home (near Toronto). From what I can tell, only 1 remains that I am SURE I have been to. We will definitely have to go. Just the atmosphere of places like that make me teary, remembering the smells, the delicious food I ate, the Gummibears and chocolate ladybugs they would surprise me with. My Oma passed away from Alzheimer's in 2007, and I learned so much from her (and my Opa too) We played endless games of Mensch Ärgere Dich Nicht and Mülhe, baked plum cake, and made Kalter Hund. I grew to love sauerkraut, we had the Farmer's rye bread open-faced for lunch with ham, liverwurst or salami, and jam with toast or cake as a mid-day treat. I have Stollen at Christmas in their honour, and a million other memories. You are very fortunate to have spent time living there
    Thank you for these fun videos! --Kristina

    With our own supermarket food becoming more and more narrowed in selection and artificial in quality, it is good to see that some of the artisan aspects of German food (bread, cake, sausage, meat, beer, sweets to say the least) do survive somewhere else. It needs a decent turnover to be able to keep so many different types of fresh food on stock. Amazing!
