I've always assumed that if something like this was bound to happen it will most likely focus the weaponry towards strategic places where they could disrupt the enemy capacity to respond or operate, basically areas where the higher profile government officials will be, military compounds that could retaliate faster and so on. Maybe right next to those would be to affect the supply chain to destabilize the country but even then I think for something this big something is bound to go off and sadly whichever country faces this scenario will have civilians more than anything as part of their casualties.
Some comments in regards to the current state of the world. 1) Assuming a NATO and Russia full on exchange, all involved would be radioactive wastelands. Billions die within the hour. Billions more after a few weeks from acute radiation sickness. If anyone survives the exchange, you're in for some bad times. The northen hemisphere as a whole, even non-nato or Russia, would be in for a lethal dose of Radioactive fallout for the first year and a nuclear winter plummeting the temperatures by up to -20C. It's highly unlikely China would follow suit in the exchange as it has already stated that it doesn't support the nuclear rattling put forth by Putin or North Korea. Colapse of all industry and supply chains would send the whole world back to the medieval period. Crops would wield a fraction of what they do now. Diseases like cholera and dysentery would be widespread among the population. Population would likely scale back to early medieval times. 2) Southern hemisphere would be mostly free from serious structural damage but still if we're talking about a full on exchange between Russia and Nato, some fallout could hit Central america and neighbouting countries. However, we would still face a harsh nuclear winter with food becoming the new currency. Collapse of all global chains of supply and manufacturing and fuel would also send the southern hemisphere to medieval-level tech. Smartphones useless. Money useless. The only new global currency is food becayse the offer suddenly becomes much less than the demand. There would widespread panicking and looting. People killing each other for food in radioactive snow. People hoarding and bunkering themselves with medical supplies and food to wait out the multiple-year long nuclear winter. Many people die in the strees from exposure as the southern hemisphere population is not accostumed to freezing temperatures. Diseases spread. Moderate loss of life, maybe millions or a billion or two - hard to estimate. So yeah, even if you are "safe", you're not really. Anyone on planet earth is fucked if a full exchange happens between NATO and Russia.
There’s not as many big bombs as they’re used to be. The titan II carried a 9 or 10 megaton warhead. That was retired in the 80’s. It’s just a waste of resources. They’re now intended more so for counterforce opposed to countervalue. Launching a warhead with MIRV’s allows you to hit the centre and all around the radius of the intended target creating a lot more destruction. There’s more than likely several countervalue options but it wouldn’t make sense to use that on a first strike. If nuclear war has you spooked, move near a military base, communications hub or oil reserves. You won’t even know it happened.
If your at a distance from a strike area a Geiger counter might be fine - Geiger counters are used for low level of Gamma and x rays - If the radiation is intense it will kill the detector - many Geiger counters can't handle high rads without burning out - You can look up Survival Lilly's on UA-cam video on what type of Geiger counters work well - Most of the problems with radiation is the cumulative effect you will have to look into that to understand it - You can watch old periscope videos on you tube on the effects of radiation on people after the bombs were dropped on Japan - The radiation neutralizes the polyphenols in our body - polyphenols absorb oxygen into our blood - when people get drunk the alcohol neutralizes the polyphenols and we become oxygen starved - Dark chocolate is loaded with polyphenols - you can get stumbling drunk then put a piece of dark chocolate between the gums and cheek on each side and don't swallow it and in 10 minutes you will be 100% sober and be able to pass a breath analyzer - If you put chocolate up put it in canning jars or mylar bags and dry charge it or vacuum it with a freezer bag saver if you don't the chocolates polyphenols will quickly activate and the polyphenols will be used up and the chocolate will become a powder - - chocolate is also a antidote to radiation sickness - Also you can look up lugols iodine on you tube - I take 70 mg a day and add it to my dogs water also - It's recommended men take 35 mg a day and women take 50 mg a day - Others recommend 25 mg a day - women's breast need 15 mg that's why some recommend women take 50 mg by many expert's - You can look on the net and find lugols sold at $100 a gallon - the small 2 oz bottles are pricey if you use a lot Amazon sells lugols in smaller bottles - if you get the gallon size you need some dropper bottles - it's the number one defence to fall out - but you would need to saturate your body before an incident - There is a lot to know about this subject -
Yes Amazon sells Geiger counters - you look at the show on you tube that Survival Lilly posted on Geiger counters - Ginger counters are not for detecting high levels of radiation - high levels burn there tube out
To understand radiation toxicity you really need to do some intense studying - If you live in a city that could be a problem - if I put down any serious information you tube will take it down before it posted - You might look up lugols iodine on you tube and do what you can to saturate your self with iodine before an event - that's your first defence - You can look at old civil defence videos on Pariscope and learn a lot - In the old civil defence video they said to first take a table spoon of baking soda in a glass of water as soon as you heard something happened - It cancels out the effects of radiation - you would do that the next two days then reduce it to one teaspoon a day from then on -
You would want a Field Survey Meter, not a geiger counter for a nuclear exchange levels of radiation. A geiger counter will max out meaning your dose could be a crap ton higher than its highest reading. Geiger counters are great however for measuring low levels of radioactivity.
It might seem like a minor thing, but light colored clothing (specifically white clothes) will reflect some of the light and heat of a distant nuclear blast away from your body. Dark colored clothes or black clothes will absorb more light and heat, causing more damage to your body.

If your at a distance from a strike area a Geiger counter might be fine - Geiger counters are used for low level of Gamma and x rays -
If the radiation is intense it will kill the detector - many Geiger counters can't handle high rads without burning out -
You can look up Survival Lilly's on UA-cam video on what type of Geiger counters work well -
Most of the problems with radiation is the cumulative effect you will have to look into that to understand it -
You can watch old periscope videos on you tube on the effects of radiation on people after the bombs were dropped on Japan -
The radiation neutralizes the polyphenols in our body - polyphenols absorb oxygen into our blood - when people get drunk the alcohol neutralizes the polyphenols and we become oxygen starved -
Dark chocolate is loaded with polyphenols - you can get stumbling drunk then put a piece of dark chocolate between the gums and cheek on each side and don't swallow it and in 10 minutes you will be 100% sober and be able to pass a breath analyzer -
If you put chocolate up put it in canning jars or mylar bags and dry charge it or vacuum it with a freezer bag saver if you don't the chocolates polyphenols will quickly activate and the polyphenols will be used up and the chocolate will become a powder - - chocolate is also a antidote to radiation sickness -
Also you can look up lugols iodine on you tube - I take 70 mg a day and add it to my dogs water also -
It's recommended men take 35 mg a day and women take 50 mg a day -
Others recommend 25 mg a day - women's breast need 15 mg that's why some recommend women take 50 mg by many expert's -
You can look on the net and find lugols sold at $100 a gallon - the small 2 oz bottles are pricey if you use a lot Amazon sells lugols in smaller bottles - if you get the gallon size you need some dropper bottles -
