@@jaydenko6568 Yusuke seems more chill about it than the others. Ryuji is straight up rude, Ann is a little dismissive, but Yusuke's response seems more in line with 'Don't worry about it, he got what he deserved.'
I feel like Yusuke is more gentle with Akechi because he openly admitted that, had he not joined the PT, he could have easily turned as bitter and twisted as Akechi. And I mean, that makes a certain amount of sense, given what Madarame put him through. Imagine if Yusuke discovered the Metaverse on his own, discovered how far Madarame's darkness ran, how deeply he's hurt not only others, but Yusuke himself, and how the warped, false Sayuri's he peddles like common cash cows was supposed to represent not just the purity of a mother's love, but HIS mother's love for HIM....
And Madarame, the man to whom he thought he owed everything, who he defended against all critics, who he worshipped and loved... let her die. To steal her work for himself.
Try to tell me he wouldn't have driven his blade into Shadow Madarame's heart, tears running down his face as he relished in that hatred, because he had nobody around him he could lean on, people who could soothe that pain and talk down that venomous hatred.
A part of me likes to imagine what the Phantom Thieves might have been if Akechi found them first. If he pushed them to embrace their hate, their rage, their despair, to weaponize it and feed those emotions to their Persona.
Try to tell me they couldn't have been pushed to the darker side of things if circumstances had only been slightly different.
Ann barely stopped herself from killing Kamoshida as is. Ryuji wouldn't have stopped her and has a history of letting his temper get the better of him. I just went over Yusuke. Makoto could have easily been twisted into a darker version of what she became if Akechi convinced her of his version of 'justice' and for her to embrace it. She felt powerless in her own life. How easy would it have been to convince her that the greatest way to reclaim her power was to crush the life out of the ones who oppressed her? Futaba is perhaps the only one who may not be swayed over completely, but it's entirely possible she could be convinced to use her power in a darker way, like modifying people's cognitions on a more subtle level rather than kill.
Haru..... Is tricky. Convincing her to kill her own father would be a tall order, but she's impressionable, easily led, and utterly alone. I don't think it's something he could do all at once, but by the end of the Palace, if he'd already corrupted the rest of them, she would have fallen in line and been a far more brutal Haru than we already met.
Like, it's fucked up to think about, but really, how close did they all come to becoming just like Akechi?

It has been stated in an interview with the developers that they deliberately made interactions between Akechi and Futaba/Haru scarce because they haven't forgiven him for what they did to their family members. Haru is still nice to Akechi in these conversations, yes, but I think it's more in a coworker kind of way rather than an actual friend. She's tolerating him because they need all the help they can get to defeat Maruki but otherwise doesn't want to deal with him. Futaba seems to be much the same although she's obviously not as polite as Haru. Ryuji, on the other hand, isn't one for pretending, so the fact he doesn't like Akechi is a lot more apparent, but even then he has moments where he actually agrees with Akechi's views.
I appreciate that they didn't go all the way with making all the PTs hate Akechi for what he's done, or instantly forgiving him for the harm he caused and instead there's more nuance to the way they treat each other. I feel like, outside of Joker and Sumire (who has no idea about what Akechi has done), the PTs that would be the most open to the idea of being friends with Akechi would be Yusuke and Ann, possibly Morgana as well.
On the case of Haru.....I feel as though, like she said after his boss fight, there's sympathy mixed in there, not just toleration. She deeeeeeefinitely still hates him, deeeeeeeefinitely doesn't forgive him.....but she also understands he was manipulated, used as a tool. So basically....besides toleration, she's nice to him because she sort of feels sorry for what he went through. At least, that's my point of view.

@@MaddyDoesStuff You're right. Haru is a very forgiving and empathetic person after all. Forgiving Akechi in the end does suit her character.
Yusuke does feel akechi's troubles a lot than others though. He even compares himself to Akechi at some point after he "died". Saying that if he would've been in akechi's place there is a good chance that he would've become someone similar.
They're in similar situations after all. Their mother died and they suffered under their father or father figure. Main difference is that Akechi had it worse. In addition to that Akechi also remembers his mum and how she had psychological illnesses. Shido also never cared for Akechi, while madarame took in yusuke out of a mix of guilt and empathy.

@@dennisleonardo2992 Despite Haru’s grief, I would like to imagine that if Akechi was still alive after the palace, she would have formally forgiven him. Or at the very least expressed empathy for his situation and how it was significantly worse than her’s. Futaba might have been a bit harder, but she would have forgiven him eventually.

@@xxProjectJxx haru and futaba do not forgive akechi. In fact, atlus purposely made them distance from him in the third semester to show them such as them not playing tycoon with him in the thieves den
It's understandable why Yusuke looks more open minded to Akechi, broadly speaking they are in the same boat where their mother died when they were little, then they are used as tools by someone who is also a father/father figure to them and the person who uses them is the cause of their mother's killed/suicide in Akechi case.
Akechi's situation can be compared to Joker's too--finding out that you were being relentlessly used by your boss for his own ends, and then trying to fight him

Akechi has a lot of connections to all of the thieves which is why when they start to introduce the idea that Akechi could have really been one of them or that without the support they had got they could have been like Akechi it's really impactful.
Haru is pretty ok around the guy who killed her father in cold blood. She casually talks to him like nothing happened.

Haru is kind of unhinged herself if you haven't noticed. She obviously cared for her father, but it shouldn't be surprising if her opinion on Akechi remains neutral.

Outside Sumire I think it's that they acknowledge hes a murderer but are willing to look past it (to a degree) because they recognize Shido used him and was partially responsible for who Akechi became

People seem to be surprised by all of Haru's seemingly civil responses to Akechi, but the way I see it she's constantly serving him passive aggressive goodness. The bouldering comment? "I hear you don't have to be that strong to boulder?" come on.... Got to love Haru
Kudos to Oracle and Noir to being open to fighting alongside the murderer of the parents. Not a lot of people are willing to work with the tool that sealed the fate of their loved ones. Plus they look like their getting along like real friends. Bonus!

But we know Akechi only got his persona two years ago, when he was 15. Maybe recheck that, as I was under the impression that Wakaba was the first target he was given.
I legitimately can’t believe Haru and Futaba are just casually holding conversations with this guy. They have every reason to hate him, but Haru especially is so nice. It baffles me.
He may be a serial killer, but he was weaponized by both yaldabaroth and shido, plus the fact that he wants to restore how things are even though he dies elevates him.

@@baciu14 I agree with your points completely but this drives me nuts: Akechi isn’t a serial killer, he’s an assassin. Serial killers choose their own targets and have very different psych profiles than assassins.
@@jonathanh.2483 iirc they blame Shido much more than Akechi, not that they forgive him (which Haru outright states she doesn't) but to his chagrin he's basically just a pawn and there's some level of pity from most of the PTs because of that.
But I do agree, I think they should have made Haru and Futaba's interactions with him way colder.

Yeah, he's supposed to have two distinct parts of him. Despite him supposedly dropping his facade, when he gets genuine with Joker about his past, he mentions he dreamt of being a hero as a child. That's why I've come to believe Robin Hood isn't a fake persona as some would think. His deduction skills aren't entirely fabricated, and he could've been a genuine detective had things gone differently.

Kinda wish there were convos talking about how Akechi feels about killing Haru and Futaba's parents. But from what I can tell and from speculation, I'm just assuming that he doesn't regret doing it per se since he can't really change things now and he probably thinks he'd do it again if the circumstances were the same but he probably just wished that his life was better so he wouldn't have felt the need to do it in the first place. But idk that's just my head canon
Im sure he does regret it but like you said, you can't change what's already happened. Besides, I doubt he would want to bring that up to them

See the problem with that is that the entire reason Haru is even apart of the group is because of her father. All of this nonsense, she didn't ask for any of this. This isn't her fight. This is not something she personally wanted. At least Ryuji, Ann, and Yusuke decided to stick with you guys. But I didn't really get any of that from her. All she wanted to do is maker her Dad nice to her again and call off the wedding to her dick of a fiance. A cat man told her that they have a way to do that, and having no other option she did. ALl of this nonsense about "Cognitions" and "Shadows" are new to her, and she can't verify it for herself. She is strictly at your mercy, so she is FORCED to trust you. But then all of it led to her dad dying horribly on live tv, through something as far as she knows she directly helped with.
As soon as she learns about Akechi I just can't see how she can be so calm around her. There's even no real tension between the two besides a throwaway line that most people probably don't even know about. It's why even though of course no one forgave Akechi, it's hard to not see it as that in all but name.

Not only did Akechi approach him, Akechi has done many stuff on his own accord. Remember, the plan to kill Joker and get you all disbaneded was his own plan. Furthermore, Akechi then decided to chase you down in Shido's palace, at a point when Shidou thought you were disbanded. He tried to kill you all on his own accord. That's why I just can't accept that Akechi isn't entirely responsible for his actions.

That's...uhh, pretty weak. Besides, isn't that technically not even canon, since those are the cognitive versions of the characters. The Thieve's Den is Joker's palace.

You just can’t see how Haru can be so calm around him? Well, so what? the character isn’t you. Not everyone behaves as you do. There are some people whose responses to things are different from yours, and you will never fully understand them. That doesn’t make their reactions invalid. (And for what it’s worth, there’s more than just a “throwaway line” to create tension. Futaba and Haru comment on it more than once in group chat and in safe rooms and make clear they’re just doing this because they have to.)
You’re just flat out wrong about Akechi planning to kill Joker, though. The logistics of the plan were his idea (ie, fake a suicide), but there’s no indication he actually came up with the idea of killing joker himself. In fact, the SIU director outright says that the plan to lift up the Thieves then plummet them in public opinion and sic law enforcement on them is Shido’s idea, not Akechi’s. I think he says it was “too twisted to be Akechi’s idea” or some shit. Considering Shido later orders Akechi to take out the rest of the Thieves and Akechi tells him that’s a bad idea, it’s not a stretch to imagine Shido gave the order to kill Joker.
Don’t get me wrong. Akechi is responsible for his actions. But “Akechi is responsible for stuff he did under Shido” and “Shido is responsible for him turning out this way” are not mutually exclusive statements. Haru-and you-can simultaneously look at Akechi and see both a person who decided to kill people (including her father) to achieve his goals, and a fucked up teenager who was explicitly groomed and used by a megalomaniacal sociopath. It just seems a bit silly to me to not focus on Shido as the worst person in the room, when the entire theme of the game is “shitty adults using teenagers.” Akechi is one of those teenagers. That’s the point.
They all treat akechi so well even though all the things he’s done which just shows how understanding the phantom thieves are. Especially, Haru & Futaba. They don’t forgive but they acknowledge his pain. I loved these little interactions in the game.

Kind of hilarious that he's classified as a mayadere; dangerous antagonist whom switches sides after falling in love with the protagonist. In this case harbour some feelings towards Ren through bonds and social links, more genuine love than the other social link characters.
Though he's a tsundere and yandere in battle through actions and words alone.

Joker and Akechis bond also feels so much more genuine to me than the rest of the confidants because akechis confidant is the only one where he's not crying on joker's shoulder, expecting him to help fix his problems or it didn't start because of a deal. Zobo Zo exactly!! That’s one thing that made me kind of dislike sumire tbh. She kept on relying on joker for help, which isn’t wrong per say, but especially the during her romance they made it seem like she had to be dependant on him to achieve her own goals

The big thing about her character arc is that she is sumire not Kasumi yet in the end, she goes back to putting her hair up like Kasumi which I hated. Also like you said, there's nothing wrong with relying on others but she goes on like "I'm no longer going to rely on others to solve my problems" but then she relies on joker to help solve her problems. It's so annoying that the writing around her character is so messy because the concept of her character is good but it's executed terribly

Honestly, the Phantom Thieves were doing Akechi a solid as much as they were for Joker and everyone else in Japan by taking out Shido. Despite his role as main perpetrator, Akechi also numbered among Shido's victims, albeit to a lesser degree than those who were killed or worse. So yeah, Akechi absolutely has the right to thank them, because contrary to what some of these kids are saying, especially Ryuji, they did do him a favor. Heck, why did Ryuji say that anyways? He was the one who yelled at Shadow Shido about using his own son. Given how messily Akechi's story came together in the original, it sounds like the writers were not all on the same page.

@@r.holtmangum5170 You're not wrong in the slightest, but for Ryuji to say that taking down Shido wasn't also for Akechi (to give some credit, probably a lesser extent than it was for Joker) is simply untrue, especially considering it was Ryuji himself who brought up Akechi to Shadow Shido when the time came to steal his treasure.
It's perfectly fine for Ryuji to show some animosity towards the homicidal maniac who nearly murdered his best friend. I'd be the same way, but I wouldn't go as far as to just deny facts like that- especially ones I already acknowledged. From a writing perspective, it's just inconsistent, isn't it? Once again, I blame the writers.

I feel like Akria is just sitting there minding his own business. I feel like Akria understands what Akechi has done and he believes Akechi deserves a chance to redeem himself. He doesn't mind that his friends doesn't like him because he understands what Akechi did was awful yet he still cares about Akechi. Even after Akechi is gone, Akria still cares about the man but he has to keep on moving forward because he knows that's for the best and Akechi would make fun of him for grieving over his death. Honestly the relationship between him and Akechi is really interesting also kinda queer coded. But that's just my opinion.

The relationship that Akechi has with the Phantom Thieves has to be one of the weirdest ones. For example in the dialogue where he thanks them for taking down Shido most of the Phantom Thieves reply in a very dismissive manner and Ryuji straight up says they didn't do it for him, yet when you still Shido's heart they directly bring up Akechi and what he did to Akechi. Adding on, though they would have changed Shido's heart anyways, they did agree to take down Shido in Akechi's stead, and also they all agreed that Akechi was a victim that couldn't be saved after stealing Shido's heart, so for them to act so dismissive to his genuine thanks is simply odd. Also a lot of people say that Ryuji hates Akechi and while Ryuji does have a lot of voicelines were it seems he isn't putting up with Akechi's shit, when Akechi dies again in Royal after Maruki's palace it's Ryuji who brings up Akechi's death saying he can't believe Akechi was fighting so hard the entire time knowing he would die again. It feels very inconsistent to be honest. In some scenes it feels like the Phantom thieves genuinely dislike Akechi, while in others it seems as if they are very nice to him and while not forgiving him can work towards a "friendship" of sorts with him.

From almost the very start the Phantom thieves knew that Akechi was lying to them about when he started being able to enter the Metaverse, so from the very start they knew he was gonna double cross him.

Add to that that they said it after believing that Akechi died in Shidos palace, he returns every as edgy as before. (which is like. the 3rd person or something that was assumed dead by that point to return alive) and their Resolve to "punish shido in his behalf" sounds hollow.

Like for all they knew Akechi was fighting hard and would keep on living, sure in police custody, but still alive and kicking. basicaly avoiding most "responsibility" as he would be a major eye witness, so it would be kinda akward, but when they realize he fought DESPITE(no, BECAUSE) he would dissapear of course they would view hima bit friendlier again. He did fucked up shit, but in the end he did sacrifice himself to make things right.
even their interaction going between "friendly" and "genuine dislike" isnt really iconsistent as most of the time the characters do have specific aproaches towards him
With Ryuji being the most "cold" towards him,(but its ryuji, he also was an ass to morgana) and whats his name(painterboy) being the most "genuinly Friendly" imo(given he himself did say that he could have very well ended up like akechi) HECK i can imagine that most if not all of the phantom thiefs do see a bit of themself in akechi and the fact that they could end up like him is what makes them reject some of his friendlier stuff.

I really dont like the responses to the “Regarding shido, thank you for keeping your promise” line. Everyone just brushes it off as just “Lol we had our own reasons to do it it wasnt about you lol” because, although it is true that they did have their own reasons, they kinda just shit on him like shido wasnt his problem too. Shido screwed up akechi just as much, if not more, than he did akira. For the rest of the PT to just brush it off... it doesnt sit well with me.

Also, all Shido did was just abandon him at birth (I'm not saying that's not wrong), everything after that is kind of on him. Sure, Shido may have ordered it, but in the end Akechi still did it. Akechi can say he was "manipulated" and all, but after the 10th person ended up dead from his actions, you can't tell me he didn't have a taste for it.
Yeah Shido literally had the most effect on Goro, seriously people keep acting like if Goro all of a sudden decided to not go along with Shido’s orders he wouldn’t have been killed 😭, plus it’s specifically stated in Shido’s palace that goro was being manipulated by him too

A lot of people are saying how casual Futaba and Haru are around Aketchi, but outside of mementos and the palace I don't think Aketchi hangs out with them, or anyone besides Joker really.
Also, Haru and Futaba won't play cards with him in the TD, which I find pretty funny.
Haru already had a bad relationship with her dad, so while upset by his death, she was probably able to get over it quicker than someone with the average father. Also she does have a bit of psycho energy, probably also from her fathers abuse, that is "helping" her cope with it.
Futaba had it way worse cause of him, and I think she has the least interactions with him even in mementos. She is only tolerating him cause she has to.
Being casual with someone you don't like/hate doesn't mean you forgive them. They are just working together to save the world and can put their feelings aside for that goal.
And again, he was just a tool for Shido and taken advantage of, which all of the others can relate to. Even if they don't like him or forgive him, they can relate and understand why he did the things he did.
I am amazed at how Haru and Futaba treat Akechi. Haru is perfectly civil and Futaba just ribs him a bit. The rest of the PTs also have reason to resent him, but joke around and/or converse with him like it's nothing. Ryuji is probably the most rude, and even he's capable of holding a conversation with him. They're very gracious.
It'd be interesting if akechi was ever so slightly scared of Haru, always a little nervous about her responses

-Mona is...complicated. He generally stays neutral, but when I bring up anything off-putting, he shuts me down fast. I find him alright.
-Skull is a brash idiotic fool.
-Panther is by far the most open of the Thieves. She doesn’t hold any qualms with me, as far as I can tell. Maybe in another life, we could have been great friends.
-Fox is odd, as usual. I generally try to sit far from him to avoid potential vomit.
-Queen is the most efficient, as usual. She still reminds me of Sae-San.
-Oracle and Noir are surprisingly open. Even I couldn’t have predicted their acceptance of my presence.
-Violet is the closest I have to an acquaintance, aside from Joker.

Man, I really feel like Akechi thanking the Phantom Thieves for changing Shido's heart shouldn't be optional easy-to-miss mementos dialogue. As much as I enjoyed the 3rd semester, they don't dedicate enough time establishing some much needed closure between Akechi and the other thieves in particular.
Edit: Don't even get me started on Haru and Futaba suddenly being ok with having casual conversation with him. And I'm not even against that idea at all. If Haru and Futaba are that open minded about Akechi's past, there's just a few heart-to-heart talks missing for those interactions to actually become believable.

The way that they talk so casually, it’s easy to forget that he literally killed two of his teammates parents.
It’s funny seeing how the story deals with that. Futaba and Haru are just like, “we can’t forgive you, but we’ll call it truce” and then hardly address it ever again. As much as I love Akechi, it’s really awkward. If they were going to team up, they could’ve at least had it that they’re both cold and distant with him in these mementos conversations, but they basically treat him like friends and it’s really weird.

Like said, according to Atlus, the other phantom thieves are being intentionally nice to not cause trouble or problems, but they still have their fair share of issues with him, and don’t play Darts with him. Futaba and Haru specifically don’t play Tycoon with him, ever.
I feel like they are doing their best to tolerate him, since that is their only option for now

Reminds me of when Kasumi/Sumire has her awaking and she ripped off her mask while dabbing. I highly doubt that was only for character design.
The only person I have a hard time accepting would be ok with talking with akechi is Futaba.
While haru lost her father to him fairly recently, she had a very intimate look at how he viewed not only the world, his business, and his employees, but also her, and just how much of a pawn he viewed her as.
And that was just viciously cementing the suspicions she had of him the last couple years.
Futaba though? Endured a targeted harassment meant to shift blame and focus from wakaba and her missing research, as well as losing the mom she loved and looked up to.
Even knowing in a basic way how akechi was and what he suffered (and who he suffered from) I can't help but think she'd be at least as frosty or biting as ryuji towards him
