  • Learn about the origins of Samhain and enjoy some previous festival footage from the Púca Festival; a spectacular, fun and otherworldly festival celebrating Ireland as the original birthplace of Halloween. Vibrant and contemporary in feel but strongly rooted in tradition.
Halloween is a globally recognised and celebrated holiday, which can be traced back to the ancient Celtic tradition of Samhain. Samhain or ‘Summer’s end’ in old Irish, marked the end of the Celtic Year and the start of a new one. It was the last great gathering before winter, a time of feasting, remembering what had passed and preparing for what was to come. We know that this celebration involved lighting fires, feasting on the crops of the harvest, music, gathering together and storytelling.
The links to the ancient Celtic past, as well as archaeological evidence, allow for a genuine grounding of Halloween in Ireland which will focus on the geography of County Meath, in Ireland’s Ancient East.
The Púca festival has been developed by Fáilte Ireland in partnership with Meath County Council to tell the story of Halloween’s origins in the Celtic tradition of Samhain.
