"I don't trust them. I trust her." - Drifter I think people are missing this very subtle declaration of love. For drifter to trust anyone at all to this degree, it means to let them in completely. and often times he won't even fully commit to saying he trust someone. But with Eris, no matter what is reported. No matter what the data may show. He believes in her in no uncertain terms. Even in this lore card he was concerned not with if she'll be able to control the transformation, but about how painful the transformations must feel. How the tithes to her must feel. He main worry was, above all else, "how is she feeling right now?" Yet instead of going out of his way to ask others about her or even to question her directly as most partners would do, he placed his trust in that whatever it is she's feeling shes not weak. She can handle it. If there's a job to do, Eris, as both a guardian and a witch, will find a way to grin and bare it to complete her mission. The consideration it takes to set your own worries aside and not voice them because you don't want her to think even for a second that she might fail is powerful. Ever notice how the Drifter is really only close with us, Mythtax, Elsie Bray, and now Sloan? His core motivation, core belief and tenet is to survive to see the next day no matter what. The only way to live up to that belief is to stay prepared even in the quiet moments. And the people on his friends list are all people who embody that survivalist affinity. But while we on the list embody the desire to survive, Eris and The Drifter ARE survival personified. Neither the Drifter or Eris are liars. if go so far as to say neither ever lies. they may not share everything they know, but they would never lie to you if asked a direct question. the Drifter said, "I don't trust them. I trust her." And to me, without him even realizing it. This was a small declaration of his growing affections to her. He may not admit it for a long while, but he's already proven it to her by sharing a dark moment in his past with Sloan. Not because he believed it would help her, but because Eris believed that HE could be the one to help her. And so, he set out to try.
I really like eris, she's ready to throw hands with the hive anytime we ask, and she makes us awesome guns. I think a good end to her story would be for her to become a full hive god after defeating xivu arath and then lets drifter turn her into a gun and give that gun to us as his most trusted friend
I could totally see a scene where the power starts to overtake Eris to the point she feels like she will never be able to make a comeback, only for the Drifter to step in and somehow pull her back to her senses. I dont know if Bungie would put anything like that in, but it would show just how strong the feeling of trust is between them.
Whenever my Grampa said I couldn't or shouldn't do something and I protested by saying how trustworthy I would be or that I would do it right, he would always turn to me and say "I trust you. It's the rest of the world I don't trust". The Drifter is giving me that same vibe through this
I just remembered a couple of quotes about vengeance: when embarking on the road to revenge, you must dig two graves, one for your enemy and one for yourself. The other: vengeance always destroys the avenger. Im also curious to see if eris, can give up the power of being a hive goddess of vengeance once xivu is gone.
My first thought when it was announced that Eris would turn was “Are she and Drifter still a thing?” Thanks for uploading this because I haven’t had time to log on.
I absolutely love that small line of dialogue. . "y'know, some days I still wake up scared. Even when I can't remember my dreams." "That is what it is to survive." As a survivor, seeing these two characters who are trying to heal and trust and work towards a better future is genuinely awesome writing.
A lot of happiness can be derived from our relationships with others. Like Byf said, positive relationships require trust between the two people, but it also requires us to trust ourselves in various ways. I'm glad to see that Eris and Drifter trust not only each other but themselves, and I wish I could hold the same trust in myself.
This really feels like a Carol and Daryl situation from TWD. They were my favorite characters to watch grow and change. Sure their relationship seemed more like a brother and sister one, but it was similar to what Byf said. The whole time I was thinking about how Daryl lost his brother, and Carol her daughter. They bonded over the loss and trusted each other to keep that from happening again.
Recently been binge-watching from Season 2 all the way to Acheron in Season 11, so I like this comparison alot, Drifter being the lone wolf survivalist like Daryl, and Eris the last member of the first fireteam to go after Crota, the one who’s had to make hard decisions to survive, just like Carol.
I totally forgot about the building trust and first step lore, but I still would like to see even if it's a silly dialog like "would you like some fried scarbs?" Between the two of them in this season, even if the new hand cannon lore pretty much makes it clear what drifter thinks
From the moment I saw Eris in the Dark Belows trailer. I knew she would be my favourite character in the series, and that still hasn't changed. I will follow her story for as long as they write for her, because it will always be one of the best stories in gaming
I think Eris made the best possible option for this terrible situation we've put ourselves in. We're unbelievably stupid to have gotten to this point, but Eris is doing the right thing. probably. I'm not 100% sold on the idea of tithing to a hive god in order to kill a hive god for another hive god.
This is one of my favorite videos you've made. Eris and Drifters relationship is absolutely one of my favorite side plots in the lore and imo the perfect encapsulation of the strengths of Bungie's writing team. Such a somber and deeply personal connection that is conveyed so eloquently, and you summarized it so perfectly.
I'm going to put money on Eris going too far into the darkness during this season and Drifter has to do something crazy(maybe give his life? but not sure if it needs to be that crazy) to bring her back. This relationship is the one I'm most invested in ever since I first heard Drifter say "Moondust". They've been building it for so long, hearing Eris' first quips with Drifter way back when felt so right knowing what they've both been through.
The start of the gambit match where Drifter is on about Hive eyes isn't random - He and Eris were discussing eating them during some quest on Titan if I'm not mistaken. They made it sound like some kind of drug lol
No matter how damaged you are, there's always that one person who's just as damaged. It links you both. That's what Drifter and Eris share. Damaged and slowly starting to lift each other up.
I've trusted Eris since day 1 since destiny 1. I always knew she'd become some sort of Hive/get some form of power back, and I'm proud of how far she's come despite all the bad stuff in her life
I love the Drifter and Eris's Relationship, whether it be romantic or platonic or somewhere in between or outside of, drifter came across as aloof, distrusting, and ever-confident of himself, as eris and drifter have gotten closer there's this hint of humanity coming out of him. I noticed it for a long while now, but it really clicked when he immediately had sympathy for Sloane, and tried to take charge of the situation, something about the way he handled that made my heart ache
Honestly im glad they're taking their time, theyve both been around for quite some time, they cant just fall head over heels for eachother immediately. Props to bungie's writers for taking their time
Immediately I thought Ikora sounded borderline like a KAREN. I have Eris' ship that has excellent lore that gave clues to her final shape. Excellent video Broseph love the lore, love the voice, love it in general you have a great narrative aspect that D2 is lacking for sure!
I am so glad that we have you as a lore master for the game dude. I am going to be experiencing the story through you from now on because I just can't with bungie anymore that last state of the game just put the final nail in the coffin for me personally, but we don't need to talk about that. Thanks for being you, can't wait to see more.
I think there is no proper word to describe this kind of relationship besides an understanding. But there is some kind of for lack of a better term, "love". A deep unending well of understanding and compassion, that defies explanation or description. It's wonderful and excelent.
This budding trust and understanding between these two characters is what makes me love thier bond even more. I can not wait for them both to find their joys (either with each other or elsewhere) 🥰💕
After Final Shape they really should get together as like the "Shadow blades" of The Last City. Basically they "operate where others cannot". And OF COURSE they should totally be shipped. They really deserve each other. I hope after this is all over they can just carve out a little place for themselves and settle down and let their pasts be in the past and move forward together.
Drifter has been through so much. I feel like he could have a mental breakdown at any moment, like in the middle of his scentence he just slows down his speech, everything hitting him at once, and he just screams full force. And i feel like the VA could accomplish this and put a ton of emotion in it.
Yeah, i agree that Eris and Drifter are not in a relationship. Obviously there’s some sort of feelings there, but I think like you said it’s more of an understanding between the two of them. They’re both hurt, and they can live alongside that pain together.
I always wondered when we started fighting alongside cabal and fallen if we would ever fight alongside hive and if some lightbearing hive joined eris' side that would be amazing
I would be really happy if those two ended together, I don't normally like couples in games that we are focused on soothing stuff because there is things more interesting but since we got Saint and Osiris, would be cool to see those two together.
I think the firefighter analogy perfectly describes the situation this season. As terrifying the idea of a new Hive god is, Im glad that its Eris, who knows the Hive better than any other guardian, and who knows what she is doing.
My immediate thought, when reading Kept Confidence, was "Jokes on us, he's into that shit." But then it occurred that Drifter characterized his survival (to Sloane) last season as running from things that scared him. And in that light, his trust becomes an expression of bravery and faith in her that no one else is equipped to express. Even his viagra joke becomes a means of expressing that faith.
The power of trauma bonding. lol Byf, I love ya, brother. But as someone from the southern US, your Drifter voice will always get a chuckle out of me. Keep up the great work, bud. You're doin' great.✌❤
Weird thought but what if.... Eris gets consumed by hyve power after killing Xivu. Drifter steps in, trying to rescue her, bring her mind back. Eris kills Drifter, regrets, cutscene..... Eris takes over Gambit in his memory and finally finds joy
I find it interesting that nobody, or at least few enough that it seems like nobody, mentions Elsie's list of how other futures ended - in particular, the one where Eris became a hive god and brought about the end of the guardians
"The assembled Guardians watched him in silence" implies the Guardians are standing by stoically, rather than dancing and making pretty colors in the air
You’ve said 4th Hive God in a few videos now… referring to Eris in addition to Savathun, Oryx, and Xivu Arath. However… wasn’t Crota a Hive God as well? Just wondering if I misunderstood something about him.
If the story doesn't have a moment where Eris is holding everyone hostage or going over the edge and Drifter rocking up saying "It's time to come home, Moon dust" then I'll rage.
I was concerned about Eris but with what the Drifter was saying... I have utmost confidence in her. And the dynamic they have with each other is so so heartwarming.
There is 1 bit of lore, in the new weapons or armor, I can't remember which, talking about how not understanding or being tricked by Savathun was a tithe for her, reminding us of just how tricky & manipulative she can be.
I genuinely hope that if Drifter and Eris do end up in a relationship, they can actually be happy together and not be used as one or the other's character development
Details about Eris Morn’s ascension and tithing that I stood out to me: 1. As far I can tell, Eris did not bond to a worm. It is likely that the worm sliver in our staff, and her naming the three Worm Gods, is her way of circumventing this particular issue. 2. Normally, when Hive tithe they hold onto part of the tithe to themselves to feed their worm and themselves. In our case, however, we don’t have a worm to feed, so all of our tithe goes directly to Eris. 3. Recall that for the Lucent Hive, their tithing system has been impacted by the introduction of Light, which as far I can ascertain, seems to help substitute for some of the tithe they normally need to collect. What effect does our own Light have on our tithe to Eris?

Yet instead of going out of his way to ask others about her or even to question her directly as most partners would do, he placed his trust in that whatever it is she's feeling shes not weak.
Beautiful.
Drifter: If there’s a hole, there’s a way.
He's eaten worse.
I though the same but holy.. 😂😂
Pretty sure there's a lore tab where Drifter talks about liking the taste of hive. Don't quote me on that though.
Drifter: wooooh, Moondust gotten on my shroms,
anyway
TRANSMAT FIRINGGGG!
@@beanburrito9215 thats a pre match gambit voiceline
"Hive bring a sword" Now has a whole different meaning coming from drifter
"Jokes on you Moondust, I'm into that shit"
Just staring the video but I assume the TL;DR is "It's not a deal breaker"
I could totally see a scene where the power starts to overtake Eris to the point she feels like she will never be able to make a comeback, only for the Drifter to step in and somehow pull her back to her senses. I dont know if Bungie would put anything like that in, but it would show just how strong the feeling of trust is between them.
Thinking we would end up having to do something to stop her or drifter would do something to stop, bring back, or end up killing her.
I’m thinking it will take the death of Eris to kill Xivu
My first thought when it was announced that Eris would turn was “Are she and Drifter still a thing?” Thanks for uploading this because I haven’t had time to log on.
I absolutely love that small line of dialogue. .
"y'know, some days I still wake up scared. Even when I can't remember my dreams."
"That is what it is to survive."
As a survivor, seeing these two characters who are trying to heal and trust and work towards a better future is genuinely awesome writing.
Eris: Becomes a literal HIVE God
Drifter: Oh no, shes hot
From the moment I saw Eris in the Dark Belows trailer. I knew she would be my favourite character in the series, and that still hasn't changed. I will follow her story for as long as they write for her, because it will always be one of the best stories in gaming
7:48 I love how this whole conversation between them is doublespeak. They’re saying things without saying it
I think Eris made the best possible option for this terrible situation we've put ourselves in.
Eyes up Guardian, Byf has dropped another vid.
That excerpt from the Purpose lorebook is so freaking sweet. It had me all kinds of misty-eyed. Excellent music choice for while reading it, too
The start of the gambit match where Drifter is on about Hive eyes isn't random - He and Eris were discussing eating them during some quest on Titan if I'm not mistaken. They made it sound like some kind of drug lol
No matter how damaged you are, there's always that one person who's just as damaged. It links you both. That's what Drifter and Eris share. Damaged and slowly starting to lift each other up.
I've trusted Eris since day 1 since destiny 1. I always knew she'd become some sort of Hive/get some form of power back, and I'm proud of how far she's come despite all the bad stuff in her life
thanks byf for all the lore!
These two have a healthier relationship than 80% of other people because of how real and honest they are😂
@My name is Byf this is probably one of your most deep and emotionally thoughtful videos to date! Well done sir!
“Woah-ho there moondust, your lookin a little hivey. More than usual…”
AWESOME video Byf!! The history of the older guardians is amazing! Eris’s and Drifter even more so due to there suffering.
"Hell yeah, Moondust! Bring over that hivussy!"
The drifters life parallels my own and i love eris, so seeing this kind of rapport is deeply satisfying.
As a firefighter in Kelowna right now, your analogy was apt.
Drifter has been through so much. I feel like he could have a mental breakdown at any moment, like in the middle of his scentence he just slows down his speech, everything hitting him at once, and he just screams full force. And i feel like the VA could accomplish this and put a ton of emotion in it.
I’m not sure she is gonna come back from this.
Nah we'll turn her into a weapon
@andrewsmith7285 I mean "technically" she's becoming a weapon already to kill Xivu 😅
Yeah, i agree that Eris and Drifter are not in a relationship. Obviously there’s some sort of feelings there, but I think like you said it’s more of an understanding between the two of them. They’re both hurt, and they can live alongside that pain together.
Drifter would definitely be like “nice”
I always wondered when we started fighting alongside cabal and fallen if we would ever fight alongside hive and if some lightbearing hive joined eris' side that would be amazing
Byf taking the black ops 3 revelations explanation for the drifter. i love it
Well...Drifter has already eaten some Hive....*ahemm*
I would be really happy if those two ended together, I don't normally like couples in games that we are focused on soothing stuff because there is things more interesting but since we got Saint and Osiris, would be cool to see those two together.
If this doesn’t make drifter want to smash even more, then man it’s joever
Huh, this was my exact question from the 24 hours into the season video. Glad I get answers.
I think the firefighter analogy perfectly describes the situation this season. As terrifying the idea of a new Hive god is, Im glad that its Eris, who knows the Hive better than any other guardian, and who knows what she is doing.
Sitting here, this in the background, then all of a sudden, I'm broken out of a trance by Oblivion music in a Destiny game video
I trust Eris. She knows what she's doing and I'll always support her!
Thanks to her we killed 3 gods, so of course
As someone who distrusts one's self and others all the same- its cathartic to listen to Eris and The Drifter connect this way
Man, to have two flames get transformed into something beyond human... Drifter has had it rough.
I find the Drifter more relatable about how I feel about highly anticipated movies or video games.
The part about the Guardians watching him in silence is hilarious, because that’s what we do.
It’s like the Sr Pelo meme “And they just stared at me”.
You're doin' great.✌❤
For some reason I really want fan art of drifter as a duck
I'm gonna be REALLY UPSET if eris dies at the end of this season....she's literally the only character in the whole game I'm genuinely invested in
Drifter: "No way they came out with an Eris flavored Hive!"
Drifter before Hive goddess: I wonder what her lips taste like.
Drifter after Hive goddess: I wonder what her lips taste like.
The story potential is so great! Excited to see how this plays out, esp since we saw nothing of Eris in the final shape.
The "i'll tell you when you're older" hit me. bungie writers had a field day with that one.
Yoooooo that duck/Drifter analogy is on point! I say that one all the time. "I'm just ducky" calm on the surface, paddling frantically underneath 😂
Ahhhhhhhh the lore video I (and Robyn) were waiting for
I just can't help but think of Sokka's reaction in Avatar. Except, instead of a Moon God, Drifter's relationship turned into a hive god.
That's rough buddy
"The assembled Guardians watched him in silence" implies the Guardians are standing by stoically, rather than dancing and making pretty colors in the air
You’ve said 4th Hive God in a few videos now… referring to Eris in addition to Savathun, Oryx, and Xivu Arath. However… wasn’t Crota a Hive God as well? Just wondering if I misunderstood something about him.
If the story doesn't have a moment where Eris is holding everyone hostage or going over the edge and Drifter rocking up saying "It's time to come home, Moon dust" then I'll rage.
He's the Yin to Eris's Yang. 2 sides of the same spooky-ass coin.
Not to mention Drifter's holstered gun is Trust (the hand cannon). If that was on purpose that's a really cool detail Bungie put there.
I was concerned about Eris but with what the Drifter was saying... I have utmost confidence in her. And the dynamic they have with each other is so so heartwarming.
Every time I hear the duck analogy, I think of BO3 Revelations with Dr. Monty screaming “I AM THAT DUCK!”
I hope Drifter shows up in a cutscene or end of mission discussion to speak to Eris. You know he's into it, he's just that way.
"If you both come out of it alive, it'll be great for your relationship" - Cayde, probably
"I've always wanted a pet Hive. The Ascendant Plane must be full of all kinds of .... I'm oversharing. Transmat firing"
Its funny that cayde mention about Eris in forsaken about her that she would be become the new hive God.
the firefighter analogy is really good
There is 1 bit of lore, in the new weapons or armor, I can't remember which, talking about how not understanding or being tricked by Savathun was a tithe for her, reminding us of just how tricky & manipulative she can be.
It would be really cool if this was all a plot by savathun to take Eris' body so that she could obtain the height of both powers of light AND dark
I'm worried Sathona Morn will be after us if Sathona takes over.
@@trepidplum5why are you deadnaming Savathun
@@Lazy-Lizard Bet they call Oryx, Auryx
@Lazy-Lizard Eris and Savathun- and I needed it to roll off the tongue better
@@wrymiedealieI prefer Aurash
I genuinely hope that if Drifter and Eris do end up in a relationship, they can actually be happy together and not be used as one or the other's character development
Great video! I do think their relationship will progress. Time will only tell.
Details about Eris Morn’s ascension and tithing that I stood out to me:
