He indeed did confirm that he did take intensive English lessons during that time in an interview that he did for Pain and Glory nearly 30 years later.
That said, however, if you watch an English language interview with him, Almodovar does actually speak some surprisingly good English, albeit with a somewhat heavier accent compared to Antonio.

Antonio Banderas is such a wonderful & open minded performer, very liberal. It’s a shame he’s categorize underrated.

Banderas couldn’t speak English in 1992 when he did Mambo Kings. A year later he’s talking like a pro. I don’t think Almodóvar was his teacher
