This set of videos about buying a mandolin are all about higher end models. What about someone starting out with the instrument who may not be sure if they will stick with it or not. I know of some lower priced models made by Stagg, Beaver Creek, and I might have seen some lower priced ones by Oscar Schmidt.

I just bought a nice Breedlove A-style that sounds good and is built real nice too for under $500. I don't care for the looks of their F-style and haven't played one, but after playing the A-style I'm sure they are as good for under $800. I also have a few Washburns. I didn't think they sounded that good until I took them to a music store and had them set up and had good strings put on them. They sound really nice now. My advice is to always have better strings put on and have your mandolin set up by someone who knows how to do it right.

Old comment, but if buying new, try to stay above $300 or so and buy from a place with an in house luthier that will set it up for you.
Below that and there's just too many places where quality will likely negatively affect playability, especially keeping the sucker in tune.

(05:11) "Do you think you need to spend 5 or 6000 to get a mandolin you're going to stick with for a while?" - "Maybe"
Absolutely NOT...... unless you are hung up on brand names, pretty inlays, polished surfaces and expert "hooey" speak. I know a man who builds them for fun, and gets a kick out of under-cutting the big names by several miles of bank-notes.
