    Oh C'mon. The video is intended to demonstrate 3 rhythms. I play each of the three rhythms along with a (pre-recorded) melody track of Whiskey Before Breakfast. The idea is to show how the rhythm style can dramatically change the feel of a tune even if the melody is played the same all three times. I never would have thought anyone would think that I was playing both melody and accompaniment at the same time. ..........Not quite sure how you go about that on this tune.

    Excellent!!... You mentioned in answer to a comment/question, that the 'melody' is pre-recorded...
    I mainly play Folk & Blues on the guitar, but to a lesser degree on the mandolin. When (trying to)
    explain to other musician friends what I 'do', i find it hard! :-) Of course there is basic chord
    playing, as well as purely melody playing, but I play a combination of both at the same time !
    While playing PARTS of chords, I intermix it with playing most of the MELODY at the same time,
    when holding mostly various chord SHAPES with the left hand, while picking the melody too.
    So the left hand doesn't have to 'hunt' all over the place to finger the 'scale' notes...
    Notes or chords are then always available for the choosing. I don't know what to call it though !! :-)

    Thanks Don for the variety, after all it is the spice of life. The two finger chords are also a great addition to any mandolinists aresenal, especially the ones in part three. I use them alot in blues and rock as they are good starting points for pentatonic runs and fills. And who cares about the BG police, cause they also work wonderfully in bluegrass. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

    Good lesson. The bluegrass barn dances are parallel to hornpipes, however, the timing differences, although tiny, make a huge difference in how they are interpreted and so how they sound. It is good to have several approaches in the tool box.

    Howdy Don I have a question due ya and I do believe it’s a question that a lot of new mAndolin players including me struggles with, it’s the ole boomchuck chop technique, for me it’s only the fast bluegrass songs, I find myself strumming the chop on the onbeats instead of the offbeat sound u hear mAndolin players using on slower to medium paced tracks

    • @donjulin
      @donjulin 6 років тому +22

      Abigail this is a lesson in RHYTHM playing. I am demonstrating three different ways of playing RHYTHM for a specific melody. The melody is pre-recorded. It is intended to simulate playing with other people. After all, the time that you play RHYTHM is when someone is singing or someone else is playing the melody. Playing the RHYTHM on it's own would not give you any context to how or where to use it. Sorry for the confusion.
