That is normal actually. There are many unsafe jobs, such as on a ship or plane, even mining or in a nuclear reactor, people would still work here but the fact that their life is in danger leads to a higher compensation than other types of jobs.
Often informally called 'danger pay' and it reflects the risks of the job. Train driver is an example, train drivers get a higher rate of pay to compensate for the risk of... collisions. The sort of collisions where you might have a breakdown afterwards and not be able to work anymore.
