This one is a bit experimental. I am genuinely curious if this is something anyone wants to build and tinker with, so let me know what you think!
Also, looking through the parts list there’s opportunity to get the cost significantly lower if I bought some of the basic hardware (screws, lock nuts, pulleys) in bulk and sold them in little kits (we could also use much higher quality hardware this way). Is this something you would be interested in?
    Thanks for watching

approachability can also come with good engineering design, so even if a final product is more complex, it can be easier to create/build/assemble/etc.
I'm not seeing any serious issues in the DIYson yet, i even have some of my own ideas that I'll try.
That aside, this simplified version is very cool! The modular light enclosure is a great idea and I can see its uses on the workbench, being able to swap out light head units for different lighting needs.

    • @StevenBennettMakes
      @StevenBennettMakes  Рік тому +6

Definitely! Maximizing approachability will still be a primary constraint on the full DIYson, the base level of difficulty will just be a bit higher.

Haha, funnily enough this was the exact name I had in mind originally. As tempting as it was, I had to accept that "Express" is just easier to say and search for than lite/light

I made some changes to suit my needs.
Modified the Carriage to my leftover IKEA hardware used.
Modified the base as I already have an old IKEA desk lamp so I reuse that one.
Modify so my regular noname 2020 rails and Creality 3d printer wheels fits nice.
Reused a pulley and belt from another old i3 printer required me to redo the Pulley mount a bit as well...
And added a LED strip running the entire length of beam instead of a spot at the end.
This LED strip is powered by a NodeMCU and WLED software with all options from that.
But hey, I guess I already made an express version :)

But now with this new and easier approach on the electronic side, I think I will start the build in the upcoming days ;) I've just got an idea, it might be interesting to use a power bank as counterweight. Just need to find one with the right weight and form factor. And maybe a flat micro usb cable can be used as the Y belt. 🤔

I am so hyped now to do my own DIYson express! as a start, the fact that clumsy carriage for the cables are not longer need is awesome, I think for the "regular" DIYson you should use batteries too or I will make one iteration like that and I will be happy to share and contribute, with this new approach you open the doors to lots of makers.
As a designer engineer I am really impressed of how well you tackled this project, impecable systematic process with clear set of goals, iterations, learnings... even including the dead ends, but reasoning every decision and step forward, and then the super clean videos you made for this channel, the cheery on top. I wish someday to address my projects like that, so thanks a lot for the teachings.
As a creator of an opensource hardware startup I think this project has lots of potential; expanding to the other range of Dyson products or even other cool consumer products, I am also big fan of their technology but we need to bring it to the masses which also helps to push innovation, the community is beginning to be active and good documentation you have in place. I think you need a discord and a website at least to start just if you wanna go that path happy to help, or if you wanna undertake even further with kits to sell to sustain your work also willing to advice you.

Cool project. For the DIYson wired version it would be easier to just strip down a Phillips Ultra Definition LED bulb with low flicker and a high CRI. One heck of a bargain at $3.50 and it works directly off 110v (220v where applicable). Good luck!

although I like the idea, I think I would personally mod the lamp so I could drive it from an external power source, and just deal with a dangling cable :P
great video though, I love the idea of one thats more easy to build, and I guess could also serve as a base for people who want to implement their own ideas, since cable management decides such a huge part of the design it seems

    • @StevenBennettMakes

If you used a small external power source to charge the battery, it still allows you to detach the power supply to move the light around, but could provide extra run time, nd only requires getting 100-200 mA to the lamp module... easy to do, never have to remember to charge the battery.... three-piece vertical and horizontal rails, with insulated center, and pass the small, 6 V power through the rollers...
Funny, no one seems to like my ideas, even though I have 35 years of electronics and system design, and more than 6 years experience in developing LEDs and LED driver circuits, 500 million at a time...Oh, well, seems that people take 'free' advice as 'useless' advice ;-)

BTW, I have found that someone else is trying to build a lamp like this. In case you haven't seen it, there are two shorts here: www.youtube.com/@user-zq1kp5cn3f
The build is not to your level of design, but he seems to have solved the cabling issue in an invisible way. Unless it is visible on the side he is not showing. On one of the shorts you can see a cable going inside the column but I haven't noticed any signs of how the power is transferred to the horizontal beam.

    Thanks !

    • @StevenBennettMakes
      @StevenBennettMakes  Рік тому

Hey there. The orientation that worked best for me was to place the long exterior face (the side opposite the belt side) on the print bed. This will require some bridging, but the bridges should be short and all of them will be hidden in the interior of the part. You could also experiment with carefully placed internal supports, but I worry that these would be hard to extract. Good luck, and let me know if you run into any issues :)

Yup, check out the Github repository: github.com/stevenbennett/DIYson
(The parts list is in the DIYson Express folder)
You will want to take a look at the individual items on the list because the price will fluctuate a lot just based on the hardware that you have on hand/have available to you at your local hardware store (a big chunk of the estimated price is hardware assortments).

Surprised I haven't come across your channel before! This is a very pragmatic approach. I love your iteration and explanation style.

I can definitely see myself building a DIYson Express for fun if I find a battery powered lamp that is funky enough to fit in a case. I could use one on a workbench that I don't use that regularly.
But to be completely honest, I think we're all looking forward to seeing what you're going to come up with for the "proper" DIYson. :D

I'm building a desk lamp according to your design. I simplified your project with no horizontal movement and I used two very bright stripes of led light attached under the horizontal aluminium profile. It's no so cool as the dyson light, but it's simple and it does the job to provide a wide area light source.

This is awesome. Someone sharing their creativity and learning to benefit themselves and others.
Forget the price comparison, lots who follow this would rather build their own than pay for an original!
    Following with interest! 👍🏼

Thanks so much for sharing all the details of this project!
One question: Some of the Amazon reviews for the Ulanzi complain about color being inconsistent across the beam. Have you experienced this at all?
Also - it looks like you did adapt some of the other lights to the arm, could you share those? (Apologies if they’re there already, I haven’t downloaded the files yet.)

Hey Dave. Looking at the reviews for the Ulanzi L2, it reads to me like they may be in reference to the RGB version of the light, and I have only tested the bi-color model. That being said, it isn't the best quality LED I have tested, but for the price it's totally passable (actually it's pretty impressive for the price IMO).
As for the other adapters; I have only had the opportunity to design two (one for the Ulanzi L2 and another for the "Ulanzi Handheld Light Want"). Both of those can be found in the project files on Github along with a. Fusion 360 template where you can try out making your own. Have fun!

@@StevenBennettMakes Ah, thanks for the reply! I was a little confused because the photo sure looked like a regular white LED, but he reviews talking about color mixing made me think it must be RGB. (Although if it were, there’s no way they’d get a decent CRI out of it.) I might pick one to make a DIYson Express. (I have a zillion other projects that I’m not getting around to though, and have a 2.5 week trip to Japan coming up, but who knows, maybe I’ll actually get off my duff and finally get some of the projects cleared :-)

What is that joint tubing mount holding your light at 8:15? I could use something like that.

It's funny how ideas that are so great are presented as obvious iteration moves.
I really like his narrative in the videos. But lets be clear, this man would be the genius of the office in any engineering department.
    Very inspirational content. Thank you!!

Super cool, I have wanted to build one for ages. Have most of the parts, ordering the rest 😀Thanks for all the effort and sharing.

Sometimes keeping it simple can lead to faster results and keep the motivation going. The two sided version is my favourite and making the back one to point up for an ambient light effect is what I would most likely do. Thank you for sharing your story, to see the evolution of this project is very inspiring, keep it up
