+Hans Beekhuyzen - Thank you for this review. You pushed me over the edge and I have been enjoying Mojo since May. I agree with your observations and conclusions - this is certainly a magical music machine. A majority of my listening is through my desktop system. I custom built a Hackintosh running El Capitan with Roon in charge of playback. (Thanks for your Roon Review as well.) The Mojo drives a pair of Emotiva Airmotiv 4S powered "monitor" speakers. The result is huge smiles whenever I'm home and listening to recordings that really sound like real music floating in a wide and deep soundstage. At least when the information is available in the recording. Poor recordings sound like, well, poor recordings as expected. Oh! The Mojo sounds great with headphones too. Thanks again!
Hello Mr. Beekhuyzen! I've heard the HUGO on a really good Hifi set and was blown away. My friend told me that there is a little brother called MoJo and I investigated. Your channel was at my favorites before because I'm using Hifiberry from the first minute. Your review ended with the placement of an order and now I have this little friend at home. And you are totally right. I have not much gear to compare but it sounds way better than a FiiO Kunlun (naturally) and even the build-in DAC in my Rotel RSX 1560. So, everybody out there, the search is over and, like Rob Watts said, the game has changed. This tiny little box has reinvented my relationship to music, at home and in the office. Thanks for your effort to give me/us new insparation and to rethink what really is needed to hear to music like it was ment to be.
We totally agree Hans! Our customers at our store in Denver, Colorado completely agree too! The Mojo is incredibly good! And it is chock full of proprietary technology that doesn't need to be any bigger than a pack of cigarettes, or playing cards...we don't smoke here :).
+Crescendo Fine Audio I just quit smoking cigars, but that had nothing to do with the Mojo. The Mojo does give me comfort though:-) Enough foolery, I agree, Chord and Rob Watts did a great job.
I have been! Marvelous with headphones. But, it really shines with speakers. Wide, deep, detailed and convincing soundstage. Have enjoyed many hours of listening pleasure - Thank you again!
I just bought this DAC with some Audeze LCD2's. I auditioned them in the shop and was astonished at the sound quality. Would love a Hugo in the future but for now this will be fantastic.
Hans your excitement and positive review for this small but mighty product has helped me to now focus on the Cord Mojo for my modest home system (Arcam AVR600/Kef LS50 and MacBook Pro) software is going to be Audirvana 2 (again based on your positive review of this software), please keep up the great reviews as it really helps as, not all of us live close to decent and friendly hifi specialist where we can sit back and listen before making the necessary purchase.
+John Grant Thanks John. Again I advise you to await my next video which is a kind of follow up on the software players. Sorry to do that to you again but I can't work any faster than this:-( And, as I say in the video, spread the word. I really need to keep growing at even a higher rate to keep this going.
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Hans, of course I will wait reference the software side,, but I am now sure now that the Mojo from Cord is the Dac for me. Hans it cannot be easy being a one man show (I hope I not left anyone out) product testing/review, filming/editing, then uploading to YT. In anticipation to your software review, thank you for your own professional reviews and findings hat help and guide us in our final decision making. Regards John.
+John Grant You're wrong there John, it's great to be a one man band!. I have ran a publishing company for 21 years and that brings all kinds of work I didn't want. Reviewing equipment, producing the videos and text on theHBproject.com, I love it. But it eventually will only work when enough people visit my channel and site. For in the end bills have to get payed. And I don't want to be put under pressure by advertisers. Advertisers must use my media since I have the eyeballs. Ant the close to 20.000 views per month is not yet sufficient.
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Hans, I fully understand as I also worked 27 years for one international company and of those 27 years 17 years as a international buyer I am enjoying the freedom that I now have and then independence to do as I please (within reason) I for one will try to spread the word about your channel as much as I can (now living in Germany), Regards John.
Thanks Hans, love your channel and knowledge. I've just bought a Mojo for £100 on eBay, it looks immaculate, but I'm hoping the battery is good. I guess it is an old design now. I bought an optical cable to feed it from my Wiim Pro Plus (I'm assuming the Mojo's chip is superior), but now I have learned coax supports a higher sample rate, which presumably makes it the best option? So I've bought a coax interconnect and a 3.5 to 2x RCA lead so I can play around a bit. I'm a real newbie, and am beginning to regret the vintage amp and cd player I bought don't have digital connections, but I can live with that for a while, and in anycase my speakers are the weakest link now. One thing I've learned- there is no going back in audio, I forgot my IEMs at the gym and had to use my old £40 earbuds, which then sounded like they were faulty!
The Mojo still is a good DAC and if the battery is end of live you buy a new one. The Mojo is still worth it. The bottleneck now might be the vintage equipment. Like vintage cars that drive less favourable and consume more, vintage audio equipment can't normally outperform modern - up to ±10 years old - equipment. Apart from that cd-players wear and are often not repairable for sensible money.
It’s very important for Mojo the transport (source) , the cables also in order to sound great; in my case, I use various sources from my old Digital Audio Player Fiio X5 (first generation) on coaxial, iPhone 6s with Kaisertone app and Lighting camera adaptar to USB up to MacBook Pro with Audirvana. With all of these sources, the Mojo performance it’s stunning.
Thank you Hans for another great review! I now have the mojo at home and my advice is to try it as a PRE-AMP, it has been a second great surprise to me, besides the excellent sound quality of mojo as a dac. I have a NadC320 BEE connected to Dynaudio Audience 72, i could bypass the Pre section of the Nad and everything improved further, like if another veil between listener and music was removed. I suggest that you give it a try, Hans you could eventually update the review if it's worthwhile!
What cables do you use to connect? I am trying the same with my Doxa 70SE Power Amp. Does anyone else have experience with this as opposed to setting the volume to Line Level and connect through a passive Attenuator as I used to do with my old DAC?
Hello Hans just wondering if you ever came across a DAC that is absolutely amazing that I can connect to my home AVR, that would be significantly better than the internal dac?
Very nice review, Hans! Subscribed. I have been a keen music/HiFi listener all my life and immediately related to your descriptions. I don't have the finances to change my components quickly so am very careful about stepwise upgrading. For me the proof of the pudding is in my listening - and my wife's musician's ears. If we both like it - it's definitely an improvement! My oldest part is the amplifier: maybe one day... Primare CD32+Exposure VIII/XI/XII+KEF Reference 4.2+Townshend Maximum. Cables Audioquest+Kimber.
+RobWhittlestone There is a Dutch saying that translates to something like this: you can dance, even if it isn't with the bride. Does that make sense in English. It's something like: you can enjoy the party even if it isn't in you name. Or: you can enjoy music, even if it's on 'experienced' gear. I know far more people that have to settle for less;-)
Hi Hans, I use a Mojo with a pair of Hypex nc400 class D power amps. These amps have balanced inputs. I connect the analog head phone output of the Mojo to the balanced inputs of the nc400s via a 3.5mm jack - RCA cable and RCA to XLR convertos connectors. The problem that seems to appear is that I loose high frequency response. I checked Mojo output- and nc400 input impedance and these are far greater than 5x apart (widely accepted standard). Did you encouter any of this in your sets? I now try to compensate with super tweeters to add the missing highs…. Can you think of a solution to this? Further I think the Mojo is a super d/a converter: nice thick sound with a good sound stage and very good timing 😉 Thanks in advance.
haha, cant belive i found such a great channel by missclick on my gf's ipad, ill sub as soon im on my machine.thanks man, informative and your way of speaking is very plesant
Thank you for your superb review of the Mojo. I'll been waiting for a review of the Mojo with more focus on usage in a audio system as opposed to headphones, and this review is exactly what I was looking for. I'm currently using a AQ Dragonfly v1.2 and have also used an iFi nano iDSD, but am looking for something better (< $1000 ) to use with my main audio system (Simsudio Moon i-3 and Totem Acoustic Model 1 Signature). The Mojo now goes to the top of my list which also included the Resonessence Labs Concero HD and Teac UD-501.
Hi, please could you advise me? I own the Yamaha rn 602 receiver you have also reviewed. Would the chord mojo pair with the rn602 ? For headphone use? Would it be a big upgrade to audio quality over the 602's dac? Also would it be a big improvement over using the 602's headphone Jack? Finally, could the mojo also act as an external dac for the 602 to use with other sources?
Hola, por favor me decís que cable comprar para conectar la salida coaxial digital (RCA) de mi DVD a la entrada coaxial 3,5mm del mojo ? Muchas gracias !!
Excellent review, as always, thanks. I'm now tempted to get this to replace my Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital in a 'table top' system connected to Mac Mini using Audirvana + & would appreciate your reply as to how much better (or not?) you think the Mojo is (& I have watched your 'What DAC is best video ;-) )? [I'm prepared to sacrifice MQA as I have read that Chord will not add that to their DAC's]
Informative review as always...it does beg to ASK more questions regarding it as more value vs to a comparably priced DAP...perhaps further discussion is needed. Like the idea of the design does not require a linear PS...that is a big plus...audiophile sound beats out convenient switching if it keeps price lowe imho.
Hans,I very much enjoy ALL your videos!...can you please advise as to what cable to use between the mojo and my Nad C236BEE amp,...and is it worth buying expensive shielded cable.I am looking at running it about 5m from the computer, thank you in advance,....AND keep your good video's please.
No it isn't. As you said, it is an input, not an output. If it's about stereo, you probably get a better sound using the Mojo as d/a-converter by connecting the Mojo output to an analogue (aux) input on the receiver using a 3.5mm jack to 2 x RCA cable.
My mojo was delivered tomorrow. When used in line with a integrated amplifier, what the volume color mojo should to be to have better performance? I've heard much distortion setting volume to maximum level. I have a Wadia 121 and is best used with maximum volume.
Just lower the volume until you hear no distortion. The output of the mojo is rather high at full volume and that is only intended for headphones listening.
When I connect my MOJO via a mini 3.5 to double RCA at "Line level" or otherwise, the receiver/preamp only outputs Mono audio, or of the right channel, i am not exactly sure. What could be going on here? the RCA cable is known good.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thank you for the reply, I will do as such. Greatly enjoy the videos you have given me fantastic insight into the audio rabbit hole.
Dear Hans, Greetings from Bulgaria. I follow the channel and enjoy your videos. I ordered myself a Chord Mojo today, I plan to use it in tandem with my Bluesound Node 2i - as a source - but I’d like your guidance according to 2 questions I have, as follows: (1) You mentioned in the review of the “Mojo” that if the software of the source is used to lower the volume - the resolution will be lowered as well /I don’t want that because I’ve got some nice, well recorded Hi-Res files/. Since the Node 2i is a computer with software as well - How should I use this combo in order to keep the full resolution intact, maybe the volume of the Node 2i should be fixed, or at 100 % all the time? (2) I’m up-sampling all the 16B-44,1kHz CD quality files in Roon to 176.4 kHz, should I continue doing that - with the “Mojo” added to the chain - or maybe I should leave the DAC to do its job without me and Roon messing with the signal before it goes into it. Thanks in advance. Kind Regards, Ivo
The Mojo is fantastic with headphones. I use the Mojo with all of my headphones, Audeze EL-8, B&W P7, Shure se846. And I will use it with my upcoming headphones, the Focal Utopia. Its absolutely mind blowing!!! The amp in it is fantastic. Try it 👍🏻
Great to hear. I am about to purchase Mojo or Grace Design M9xx. Have you also tried M9xx? I heard great thing about it and it compete neck to neck with Mojo. Love to hear your thought if you also tried M9xx. Thanks.
Im working in Protools software for mixing Songs..I dont need any preamp or mic input from audio interfaces,I just want flat frequency response analogue Audio from Digital to Analogue Convertor So i'm going for DAC..i'm confused whether to buy Audioquest Dragonfly® V1.2 or Apogee Groove DAC?
+dinesh yuvi Having a flat response is the absolute minimum a DAC must have to be even considered to be reviewed by me. Any decent DAC is flat within 0,3 dB or less, including the Dragonfly.
Hi Hans, great review of the Mojo. What is your take on "Audio Specialist" USB cables? I've been mostly skeptic about them but a few months ago I was at a demonstration with a Hi-End system & there were quite noticeable improvements first changing to a medium quality cable & then to a high quality one. I could not see anything being changed other than the USB cable between audiotions. Additionally, what would you recommend to connect the audio out to my Classé Pre-Amp.? Thanks.
Like with analogue cables (seeua-cam.com/video/p8-zItJDMHM/v-deo.html) they can make a significant difference. And the reasons are the same as with interconnects plus that for digital connections a correct impedance is specified.
Hans I have a quick question. When you use the mojo as line out to your speakers, do you run it off from the mojo's battery? or do you have it connected to a power source constantly? if so would that damage the battery as speakers are power hungry than iems or headphones?
Hans, thanks for your reply. My speakers are powered active monitors. I have heard people connect the mojo by line out mode directly to the monitors. Will this cause damage to mojo or the monitors? The line used is single 3.5mm trs to 1/4inch dual ts jacks
You can use the Mojo directly connected to active speakers in both standard mode and Line Out mode. In standard mode you can adjust volume on the Mojo as well.
Hey man I have an iphone 7 and use a reg laptop computer. Would this be good to use? I have a stereo with its own seperate amp and speakers to be powered with. I have all the rca cables and other cords needed as well. I was looking at either this or the dragonfly red. Was wondering if there were any subtle differences between the two as well. money's not an issue but if I save a good chunk buying the rational one then so be it.
The Mojo is clearly superior to the Red; it better be at 3 times the price. And yes, it will work with an iPhone 7 and your laptop. You do need a Lightning to Micro USB cable to use with the iPhone and a USB to MicroUSB cable for use with your laptop. If your laptop runs Windows, you also need a driver that can be downloaded from Chord. Mac's and Linux computers need no driver.
Hey, thanks for this very comprehensive analysis! Have you by any chance also tried the celsus sound companion one, to compare it with the MOJO? Thanks 😊
+nicolas0pierre Tnx, And how can I refuse such enthusiastic viewer😀 I Requested a review sample and expect no problems getting that. So subscribe and be patient for the celsus sound companion one review to appear.
Do you find the Mojo still relevant in terms of sound quality on today's market? Can it still compete with more costly DACs? Thank you, love your channel, please keep up the amazing work!
It still is one of the better DAC's in its class. There appear to have been battery problems though. I didn't track that so you might want to check that.
I’m curious to know how the battery holds up. I have read about when the battery starts to fail the mojo just keeps resetting or rebooting. Have you had any issues with it so far?
Hello sir, i would like to have your opinion on the chord mojo vs ALO audio International Optical Edition in terms of the amp that they have, which is better?
no problem sir! i was just curious becauseit about the same price as the mojo and it's 45% sale right now here in our country(from 600$ it went down to almost 350$). thank you for the nice review!
This mini amp promotes smartphone use. Do you think my LG V10 will still improve its output esp. the soundstage, imaging, etc tapped with this unit? Thank you for the excellent review.
Thanks Hans - another excellent video. I have learned much by viewing your channel but still have beginners questions. Will good quality portable DACs such as this (or the iFi) work OK as an-line DAC linked at one end to the outputs of players such as the Mircorendu or sms-200 (fed by my computer storage)and, on the other, an input on my audio amplifier?
how is the amp section of mojo is it capable of driving high demand headphones like HE-500 or HD800, also have you done battery test. will you consider comparing it with LH Labs Geek Out V2+ to prove yourself wrong ;)
+Lone Star I don't do headphone listening so I have no opinion on driving HP's. I reviewed the Mojo as stationary DAC, as I clearly stated in the video.
+Kamil Kloch There is no specific line out mode. The outputs are dimensioned so they can function as line output or (not and) as headphone output (headphones need a higher volume setting so you work with either the amp of cans connected). Since I'm no headphone listener, I did the whole review with amps connected to the 3.5 mm output using a cable into 2 x RCA. So the review is exactly what you wanted:-)
+Kamil Kloch , HI Kamil ,,, I just uploaded a video showing that exact thing ;-) The sound is stunning. Superior separation, detail, resolution, powerful / etc. & I seldom use it to my system though as my Denon's 16 DAC's, are of very high quality already.. Hope this helps.. It is one of the best DAC's to come along in awhile & may be a long while b4 any other DAC beats it.. Also know,, Hans is the BEST.. His words are Gold! I bought my Mojo within minutes of watching this video. When He speaks, one should listen. He won't steer you wrong..
Hans trying to reach you for a project im working on. I have a Raspberry pi car audio setup.. I am looking for a good DAC to run off the Pi.. I can considering the IDAC2 and the Mojo.. my issue with the mojo is having to hold the volume buttons at the same time to get line level out... I only need line level out for my use.
A Mojo seems like overkill to me and a bit complicated since you have to switch it on manually. Why not go for the Allo Boss v1,2, It is not the quality of the Mojo but I can't believe you'll hear the difference in a car, not even a high end car. Besides, it will automatically switch on when the RPi is switched on.
When it comes to staging and Time alignment with a proper DAC it is pretty amazing. Competition is done with the car not running so ambient noise from the vehicle does not cause issues. Is teh ALLO BOSS V1,2 as good as the IDAC2?
+Kamil Kloch Depends. In theory the COAX has wider bandwidth thus less chance on jitter but offers no galvanic separation which could introduce jitter. TOSlink offers galvanic separation and thus less risk of jitter but has a smaller bandwidth that comes with the risk of jitter. The question is if in your situation ground potential causes a bigger problem than the bandwidth limitation of TOSlink. In plain English: just try.
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Thanks for clarification. Checking COAX is not straightforward with a Mac :) If you were to connect Hugo/Mojo to your (i)Mac(mini), how would you do it?
+Kamil Kloch You don't wanna know😗 Robert Watts (the software designer of the Mojo) uses optical. For that reason that might be the best input on the Mojo. The USB is rather critical on ground potential and - as you painfully pointed out - there is no COAX on a Mac (Although I occasionally use an M2Tech USB to SPDIF converter). I currently use the Raspberry Pi 2B with HiFiBerry Digi+ Trafo with piCorePlayer and Roon (see ua-cam.com/video/2l8W71vrBh8/v-deo.html). As I said, you don't wanna know.
Great video. I'm using the fioo x5 audio player, it has coax and micro usb output ,.. Is there any difference in coax and microusb when it comes to quality ? Is coax and optical better than micro usb when connected to a dac/Amp.
There are theoretical differences, but the biggest difference often is in the implementation. See ua-cam.com/video/AWM8fOCCVW4/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/grzoqEb2KMk/v-deo.html
Thanks for the link. The Audiophile world is pretty complex hehe. Now I use coax to toslink cable, coax out from the music player and the toslink input plugged in to the Chord Mojo and using Denon AH-D7200 headphones , it's a killer Combo for good quality sound☺️ Best Regards From Norway.
Great video; very well spoken! Would there be a substantial difference in using a typical smart phone or a dedicated player such as the Fiio X5 as the source for the Mojo?
+f4phantom2500 I'm no expert on portable players, head-fi.org might be a better source for you. Purely as an educated guess I would say that it is likely there will be a difference.
Sorry to bother once again but my speakers are powered speakers, will it still work with the mojo? I do not want to break it before using it so I am being very cautious. So usb from pc to mojo then optical from mojo to speakers, would that work without any issues?
You have to make an analogue connection from the Mojo to the speakers. Use a 1/8 inch jack to two RCA's cable, connect the 1/8 inch jack with one of the headphone outputs of the Mojo and connect the RCA's to the RCA's on the rear of the right speaker. Set the switch to 'Line'. Set the volume on the Mojo so that the volume knobs colour blue. That will work without any problems.
Thank for your very interesting review. It encouraged me to buy a mojo. Im very pleased with the sound of the dac. But when it is charging there is a very enoying high hiss. Did you experienced such a sound as well and do you maybe know a way to overcome this hiss? I would be very grateful for any advice.
Fabulous review, Hans!😎👍 I will use this DAC primarily with my MacBook Pro and headphones. But is it possible to hook the Mojo up to my Naim 5i amp? Only analogue inputs available I am afraid (RCA and DIN).
You can connect one of the headphone outputs to a line input op de Naim, for instance the cd input using a 3.5 mm jack to 2 x RCA cable. I use this one: www.audioquest.com/bridges-falls/evergreen. You need to connect a digital source of course, for instance your Macbook Pro. But you can also use the digital output of your cd-player using an optical cable. Set the volume control somewhere between green and blue.
Hans, I´m very convinced to buy a Chord Mojo after this review. I would go for Hugo, but it´s too much for my budget now. Using a 3.5mm jack to RCA adapter give me no loss? As Mojo has not volume control, how is the power it transfers to the integrated compared to Hugo? Can I get as much volume power as mytek brooklyn and Hugo?
I can't say what loss a 3.5mm jack to tousling cable will give, but it might not be optima. You can use an optical cable, of course. The Mojo does have a volume control, two of the three knobs are used for this.
I meant 3.5mm jack to interconnect. This one www.amazon.com/Audioquest-3-5mm-Mini-Plug-to-2-RCA-Adapter-Hard/dp/B003VJX2F2 The optical and coax are input, are they not? Or are they output too?
Totally disagree. 1. The Unit has poor heat dissipation especially in line level mode above 5 hours. 2. Chord DAC's may be resolving with classical and acoustic music but are unable to control low frequencies and deliver weight, punch and drive or fast transience with Electronica/Hip/Hop/Reggae/Dub/Dubstep/Grime.
Hi Hans - an excellent review and really valuable channel. Many thanks! You mention that you used a Raspberry Pi with HifiBerry Digi+ as one of the test input devices to the Chord Mojo. This is exactly the set up I'm considering at the moment. Can I ask what you used to connect the S/PDIF output from the Digi+ to the Mojo? I'm guessing an RCA (from the Digi+) to mono 3.5mm jack adapter/cable (to the Mojo coax input) is required. While there are plenty of these available online they all seem to be very low cost and basic items and I can't seem to find anything of this sort on audiophile sites. I suppose it's logical that interconnection cable quality is less important for a digital signal than an analogue one. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm just starting out on the audiophile journey. I'd very much welcome your thoughts.
Hi Vera, the fact that you consider the quality of cables proves you can't be dumb😉. In contrast to what you might think the digital connection is rather critical. All the bits need to be perfectly on time and bad cables might cause a slight variation. If you want a more in-depth explanation, see ua-cam.com/video/grzoqEb2KMk/v-deo.html. Digital interconnects need to be 75 ohms and they hard to find having a 3.5 mm jack on one side. Therefore a proper optical connection might be easier and better than a non 75 ohm cable.
Many thanks for the advice Hans - that's really helpful. That link was very useful. You'll be pleased to know I've now bought your ebook to get me properly started. Such trustworthy and respected sources of info and advice as yourself are rare indeed online. Thanks again.
Any rumours of additional adapters past the cable adapter recently released for the Mojo like Bluetooth, WiFi or SD? Saw something reported in a recent award they won.
Hans, I will not dare to ask for buying advice. I will try to be more slippery... 😀 If you could only listen to Tidal, would you prefer to listen to 44.1/16 through the Mojo or would you prefer to listen to MQA Masters through the Dragonfly Black? Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos even though I don't understand half of it!
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Great video as always. How does this compare to the Dragonfly Red and is it worth selling ones Dragonfly Red and invest more on the Chord MOJO. Also, does the MOJO do MQA like the Red? Thanks
Using the door that was opened earlier. If you were using Roon and listening through Chord Mojo or Pro-Jett Pre Box S2, which would you prefer. Thanks for your kind help.
Dag Hans, even een vraagje: zou je deze DAC ook aanraden om op te nemen in een audio opstelling thuis? Of kan je dan beter kiezen voor de Chord Qutest? Dank!
Fantastic review Hans, your yrs of publishing skills def. pays off. I too sure hope they come out with a TT version. I just watched your recent view on the iFi Micro, can your share your feelings comparing the two? Would you consider the move to the Mojo to be a worthy 'upgrade'?
No, of course not. I was just pulling your leg😜 Why should I praise a product I reviewed? Perhaps because it really is a lot better than other products in the same price bracket, let alone devices that come at two to three times lower prices. Having said that, if you are truly happy with the Explorer 2, be just that: happy with the Explorer 2.
OK :). Ordered the Mojo before and it didn't work with my computer so I returned it, but guess what, I just ordered it again to use portably. Hopefully this time it works for the computer. Remembered the sound was nothing I've heard before, just top notch. Thanks again for the great review.
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel I had a software installed on it called boom that enhances the sound which I bought the Apple. Thought maybe they don't go together. But when used with the iPhone 6s plus with the sennheiser hd 650, the sound was nothing I've ever heard. For that alone, I ordered it again. Should get it by Thursday. Will keep you posted :)
Hans, the Mojo isn't the best dac sub 1500 money. The DragonFly Red is better in spatial information and nearly as good in providing transient information. Have a listen if u haven't already
Hans i have auditioned the moji and I love the souind signature and thing that it is exactly what my stereo needs. now i cant afford the unit and im not interested in buying it used because of the battery in the unit. so im on a quest to find identical sound signature from other manufactures that dont use battery? i have noticed that you have reviewed a nice variety of budget and also hi end dacs and I know that you are intimately familair with the sound of chord mojo
I know of no alternative for the Mojo. And I son't see the problem of the battery. If you don't use it, so always use it with the power supply connected, it's not in the way.
between 12 to 18 months every single one of them the battery fails and the company charges 200 to 300 USD to replace it. unacceptble to me and the reason why wont buy it secondhand. I have decided the give audio-gd R2R DAC a try. thanks though.
The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel I would suggest a quick search "chord mojo battery replacement" and see the pain and anger. Of close if I didn't have budget concerns I wouldn't care because I loved the way it sounds.I liked Hugo even better and my usage is only desktop.not portable
That's internet wisdom. I am sure there are a large number of complaints. More interesting is what percentage has problems. The Mojo was sold by the shiploads. But I wouldn't buy one if I were you for you don't trust it.
The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Those especially the ifi micro black label is the nearest competitor right now with people preferring it over the mojo. Of course I understand that some people’s reviews will be skewed because of the ifi’s beast of an amp for headphones but I would really be curious about your thoughts on them compared just as pure dacs.
Thanks for the great review Hans. How close is the explorer2 to the Mojo sound wise? I've just invested in the Meridian but I can exchange for a mojo if the sound difference is wide enough
+James Stanley Go for it. The Explorer2 is great for the money and promises MQA but I wonder even with MQA if it comes even close to the Mojo given the fantastic WTA filtering.
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel - thanks Hans, looking forward to your review of the Aries mini and if it's good enough to replace the pi2 digi+ in my main rig :)
Thanks for this fantastic review on mojo. I have questions which i hope you or anyone can help answer. Q1: Mojo is so compact, mobile, battery operated and relatively cheap but it's able to drive any headphone in the world today with ease and with outstanding sound quality too. Question is, how does it works technically? How can a small battery operated mojo drives 2x hardest headphones with ease wherelse my Bose Companion 5 which uses wall power supply has to crank up the volume to the fullest to get similar dB? Q2. I understand that it requires big amplifiers to drive huge home speakers. Therefore, we are paying top dollar for amps that can output more current into those drivers. But, headphone drivers are very tiny and i reckon it does not need much current to drive them. Then, why do we need to pay top dollar for a reasonably good quality headphone amp, e.g., McIntosh, Chord Dave, Woo Audio and etc.? I believe there must a reason other than high gross margin that we are paying. Hope anyone here can help enlighten me on these questions. Thank you.
+chandrakiranraju This type of batteries have about 500 too 1000 cycles. When you use 50% of a charge and reload it again, that counts as half a cycle. The Mojo housing is screwed so it can't be difficult to replace the battery.
+chandrakiranraju Chord Electronics gave this answer: "The battery will last for at least five years. If you charged Mojo every single day for this period of time the battery capacity would, typically, only reduce 20%. At the end of the batteries life we will be offering a service that replaces them for approximately £100."
A very good d/a-converter is a very good d/a-converter and the Mojo works like a charme as stationary d/a-converter. I use both the Mojo and the Hugo this way.
Hi Hans I know the Mojo, and all the Chord DACs have received excellent reviews in the European "press", but because I respect you & your reviews so much, I now have to give those other reviews more credence. Anyway, have you had any experience with the Schiit Bitfrost Multibit DAC. It is the same price as the Mojo in the US, so it could be a valid comparison. Steve Guttenberg just gave it a good review on Cnet.com, but I don't consider his reivews meaningful. He's too much of a fanboi. www.cnet.com/news/the-good-schiit-bifrost-multibit-digital-converter/ The Bitfrost Multibit uses an off-the-shelf DAC, Analog Devices AD5547CRUZ, but with their own digital filter. I wouldn't expect it to out-perform the Mojo, but I would like to know how close it comes to it. Schiit makes some interesting, reasonably priced components and they might be worth exploring. The things I don't like about the Mojo are the headphone amplifier/outputs and the mobile form factor. I know it's designed for mobile use, but I would love to know what percentage of owners actually use it for mobile, as opposed to just putting it in their stereo system and forgetting it. Thanks for this and all your other great reviews. Your reviews are thorough and as unbiased as they can be. I started learning about stereo by reading Julian Hirsch reviews in Stereo Review many years ago. His measurements seemed very accurate, but I learned that he seldom compared one component to another, and he liked anything advertised in Stereo Review. Later, Stereophile, The Absolute Sound, Audio Critic, IAR and many others made me realize what good reviews actually were. Unfortunately, it seems we have come full circle. It used to be that these magazines existed to do reviews, and accepted advertising to be able to exist. Now, they exist for advertising (income) and have reviews to be able to exist. C'est la vie.
Unfortunately schiit doesn't answer my request to lend me a review sample. And to be honest I doubt whether their conventional technology can come near the advanced tech Chord has developed. I think that schiit's social engineering does outperform that of Chord......
Hans, thanks for responding. You're probably right, and I like your "social engineering" comment. :) I doubt it will do much good, but I sent Schiit an email suggesting they give you review samples. I also said that even if they don't provide review samples, they should at least respond to you and let you know that.
From what I read online based on impressions and comparisons, the Bitfrost outputs a similar level of detail with a meatier sound. And the Gungnir Multibit, according to everyone I asked (People who own both the Gungnir and Mojo) say the Gungir straight up outperforms it and delivers more detail. Although I have heard the Gungnir Multibit with a Lyr 2 at a headfi meet I couldn't say it was anything special. I'm thinking it had something to do with the Poor quality usb and rca cables I saw connected. I'm almost positive that they negatively affected the sound. Anyways, I think you should try to put both the Bitfrost and Gungnir against the Mojo and see which you prefer. I'm going to try to email Schiit and convince them to send you a review unit. I think you are more than qualified to review their unit and It angers me that they didn't bother responding to your email...
@Yoo Anto It actually isn't that hard to tell dacs apart. You just need to listen and focus on particular differences. For instance: One dac may present greater sound stage width. Another may sound bright and harsh. One may sound overly warm. It takes time but it isn't impossible to tell them apart. All you need is a decent ear and the will to put effort into finding differences.
I have recently listened the Mojo My self. I was left totally unimpressed in fact I couldn't wait to return it back. I will not be dramatic in my comments but to my ears it is not worth its asking price as It sounds totally artificial and not so special in any other aspect.. Nice marble balls though.. To my ears competitors from the likes of Meridian of ifi totally trounce It sound wise..
@@dixienormous2440 all opinions are respected but that doesnt change mine. I still think mojo is not worth It. My cellpgone's amp sounded better. Of course what I say is not the "holy quran" so If It works for you enjoy It.
How can we compare the sound signature of chord mojo and schiit modi multibit dacs. I want to buy one, but really confused. Haven't heard any of these.
I'm high on illegal substances and got the Mojo working. Great review. The mojo sounds so good.
you don't need illegal substances.. These kinds of devices give you a natural high😁
HI, I am from Romania, this is definetly the best review! God done, thank you,
+Hans Beekhuyzen - Thank you for this review.
+Wilhelm Grau It also sounds better than the DAC's in my Arcam AVR600 (which costed € 4999!!)😐
Great review. This video pushed me to buy a used Mojo off of eBay. Money well spent.
It's a great review Hans!
+Crescendo Fine Audio Tnx, spread the word:-)
Thanks for this great review! It moved me to action and now I'm impatiently waiting for a Mojo to show up.
+ezlog49 Enjoy the music!
+Adam McCartan-Mooney Enjoy the music!
Hej Hans, I'm wondering whether you had a chance to spend some time with Mojo 2? Thank you for top quality presentations. All the best from Sweden!
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel
Hans, of course I will wait reference the software side,, but I am now sure now that the Mojo from Cord is the Dac for me.
Hans it cannot be easy being a one man show (I hope I not left anyone out) product testing/review, filming/editing, then uploading to YT. In anticipation to your software review, thank you for your own professional reviews and findings hat help and guide us in our final decision making.
Regards
John.
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel
Hans, I fully understand as I also worked 27 years for one international company and of those 27 years 17 years as a international buyer I am enjoying the freedom that I now have and then independence to do as I please (within reason) I for one will try to spread the word about your channel as much as I can (now living in Germany), Regards John.

That’s it I’m buying it thanks
👍🏼
At last a proper review of a quality product. Not like the bedroom bound, rambling Zreviews videos
Glad you liked it!
haha, cant belive i found such a great channel by missclick on my gf's ipad, ill sub as soon im on my machine.thanks man, informative and your way of speaking is very plesant
+Mafalda Fonseca It had to be:-) And thanks for the compliments.
The Mojo is a better DAC that the one in your Yamaha. I can't judge whether you will appreciate it like I do, of course.
Informative review as always...it does beg to ASK more questions regarding it as more value vs to a
comparably priced DAP...perhaps further discussion is needed. Like the idea of the design does not require a linear PS...that is a big plus...audiophile sound beats out convenient switching if it keeps price lowe imho.
Great review!!! 👍🏻
Can you connect the Mojo to an external headphone amplifier like Violectric HPA V281 or Lake people and use it just as a dac?
Yes, you can use the outputs of the Mojo to connect to a headphone amp.
Good day Sir. Is it possible to use the optical input from the chord Mojo to the receiver? To play music from the pc via optical.
No it isn't. As you said, it is an input, not an output. If it's about stereo, you probably get a better sound using the Mojo as d/a-converter by connecting the Mojo output to an analogue (aux) input on the receiver using a 3.5mm jack to 2 x RCA cable.
Cool. Thanks For Answer. i just got the chord mojo today, its charging ^^
I can't say. Contact your supplier or the local Chord representative.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thank you for the reply, I will do as such. Greatly enjoy the videos you have given me fantastic insight into the audio rabbit hole.
Dear Hans,
Greetings from Bulgaria. I follow the channel and enjoy your videos.
I ordered myself a Chord Mojo today, I plan to use it in tandem with my Bluesound Node 2i - as a source - but I’d like your guidance according to 2 questions I have, as follows:
(1) You mentioned in the review of the “Mojo” that if the software of the source is used to lower the volume - the resolution will be lowered as well /I don’t want that because I’ve got some nice, well recorded Hi-Res files/.
Kind Regards,
Ivo
Do you think the mojo is worth the price for mostly portability and despite already having the nad d1050 which I use for headphone listening etc?
+Stafa Thiam I don't know. I don't do headphones.Look at headgear.com.
Thanks.
+Jim Kim sorry I don't know the Grace
+Jim Kim Mojo can also be used on the go and you can't with the grace.
Apart from the obvious input advantage and remote, would this be better than an m-dac+? Thanks
Please see ua-cam.com/video/EykkzxUstL4/v-deo.html
Im working in Protools software for mixing Songs..I dont need any preamp or mic input from audio interfaces,I just want flat frequency response analogue Audio from Digital to Analogue Convertor So i'm going for DAC..i'm confused whether to buy
Audioquest Dragonfly® V1.2 or Apogee Groove DAC?
+dinesh yuvi I don't know the Apogee from hands-on so I can't tell. Sorry
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Does Audioquest Dragonfly 1.2 has flat frequency response for Accurate Monitoring?
+dinesh yuvi Having a flat response is the absolute minimum a DAC must have to be even considered to be reviewed by me. Any decent DAC is flat within 0,3 dB or less, including the Dragonfly.
Is Mojo MQA enabled? Upgradeable firmware or is the FPGA set code?
No, and I think that will not happen soon
Good evening Hans, I have the Oppo ha2 and ifi nano. I am interested in the chord mojo. Would this be an upgrade and justify the $$$
Thank you
Russ
I really can't say. Depends on many factors. And I have not reviewed the equipment you have, with makes it even harder.
Hans I have a quick question. When you use the mojo as line out to your speakers, do you run it off from the mojo's battery? or do you have it connected to a power source constantly? if so would that damage the battery as speakers are power hungry than iems or headphones?
I presume you use an amplifier in between the Mojo and your speakers. You can't use the Mojo uitput to drive speakers directly.
Great. Thank you very much for your expertise Hans. I sincerely appreciate it.
my pleasure.
I had my battery replaced.
Fantastic review!
+stipsazg Thanks! Also tell the world;-)
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel it'll be my pleasure.
Hello sir, i would like to have your opinion on the chord mojo vs ALO audio International Optical Edition in terms of the amp that they have, which is better?
I have not reviewed the ALO so I can't have an opinion on it. Sorry.
no problem sir! i was just curious becauseit about the same price as the mojo and it's 45% sale right now here in our country(from 600$ it went down to almost 350$). thank you for the nice review!
just aks yourself why the ALO is discounted and the Mojo isn't....
The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel i guess your right. great products don't come cheap, thanks for that point! :)
This mini amp promotes smartphone use. Do you think my LG V10 will still improve its output esp. the soundstage, imaging, etc tapped with this unit? Thank you for the excellent review.
+Benj D.B.S. I don't know the LG but I would be surprised if it didn't. Depending on your playback system the difference might even be enormous.
That is exactly the way I use the Chord DAC's. I rarely use headphones, they make me feel claustrophonic.
Is combination with airport extrem over optical a good idea? Alternatives or is the airport even very good anyway?
Some Airport's sound fair, others very poor. The switching mode power supply causes a lor of jitter in some of the Airports.
Thank you
How does the idsd black label micro compare to mojo? Kinda torn between them. The mojo looks so cute and elegant at the same time..
Please watch What DAC is the best: ua-cam.com/video/EykkzxUstL4/v-deo.html
how is the amp section of mojo is it capable of driving high demand headphones like HE-500 or HD800, also have you done battery test. will you consider comparing it with LH Labs Geek Out V2+ to prove yourself wrong ;)
+Lone Star I don't do headphone listening so I have no opinion on driving HP's. I reviewed the Mojo as stationary DAC, as I clearly stated in the video.
Hans, could you comment on the quality Mojo delivers when used in line-out mode, connected via mini-jack -> 2x RCA cable to a stereo amplifier?
+meutubedou 😚😱
Hi Hans, thanks for your excellent review! I am just wondering which one is better, SONY PHA-3 or Chord Mojo? Can you give any advice?
I have not reviewed the Sony, so I can't say.
If I were to connect Mojo directly to a Mac, would you consider Toslink qualty on-par with COAX?
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Yes, I would follow your path (bitperfect streaming to a renderer) if only Roon was more affordable...
+Kamil Kloch Yes, but then again, A Mac via TOSLink to a Mojo - I've seen worse! And a lot of it!!
Hans, regarding the build quality, do your buttons rattle a bit in their case when you move or carry your Mojo? Thanks :)
+Rhett Johns No, mine is silent.
Does it work with speakers I have a pair of klipsch pm15?? I want something for my pc, a good DAC but I mainly use speakers with a sub not headphones
Sure, but some amplification will be needed. So you need to use a separate amp or use active speakers (speakers with the amp built in).
thank you once again :)
my pleasure entirely
No I didn't. You could try another power supply.
The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Thanks Hans! I will buy that cable. So curious to see how it performs on my KEF LS 50 speakers.
How would you compare mojo to sony pha-3 with balanced audio out?
+chrismariani530 I haven't reviewed the Sony, so I wouldn't know.
great review! will the volume controls work in line out mode? so you can plug directly into a power amp without a prescription amp?
Yes
This one www.amazon.com/Audioquest-3-5mm-Mini-Plug-to-2-RCA-Adapter-Hard/dp/B003VJX2F2
The optical and coax are input, are they not? Or are they output too?
I don't have experience with the plug. The Mojo connectors on the side of the optical connector are inputs only.
So how did you plug the mojo into your system? How did you test it?
Totally disagree. 1. The Unit has poor heat dissipation especially in line level mode above 5 hours. 2. Chord DAC's may be resolving with classical and acoustic music but are unable to control low frequencies and deliver weight, punch and drive or fast transience with Electronica/Hip/Hop/Reggae/Dub/Dubstep/Grime.
Ok, let’s agree to disagree.
Any chances of comparing Chord products with PS Audio DirectStream? :)
+Kamil Kloch It's on my list, but I might go for the Junior.
The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel
hans.. do you use your mojo with your phone combined with some iems when you are out and about ?
Andreas Tzimboukakis no, I only use it in my setup 1
You make me blush Very. Thanks.
Any rumours of additional adapters past the cable adapter recently released for the Mojo like Bluetooth, WiFi or SD? Saw something reported in a recent award they won.
What rumours, I don't know them.
www.eisa.eu/awards/hi-fi/18/european-usb-dacheadphone-amplifier-2016-2017.html
I really don't know about rumours, there is a cable pack on the Chord site: www.chordelectronics.co.uk/product/mojo-cable-pack/
Chord "Poly" Bluetooth/WiFi/SD announced at CES 2017 add on for Mojo. Also the Hugo2 and a DAVE class companion product
So educational!
+Elvis Thank you kindly. Tell your friends about it and help me further gain public.
Hans, I will not dare to ask for buying advice. I will try to be more slippery... 😀
If you could only listen to Tidal, would you prefer to listen to 44.1/16 through the Mojo or would you prefer to listen to MQA Masters through the Dragonfly Black?
Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos even though I don't understand half of it!
I'm glad you didn't ask for a buying advise😉. Perhaps this video will help you: ua-cam.com/video/EykkzxUstL4/v-deo.html
Dank!
I didn’t review the Qutest so I can’t say.
Fantastic review Hans, your yrs of publishing skills def. pays off. I too sure hope they come out with a TT version. I just watched your recent view on the iFi Micro, can your share your feelings comparing the two? Would you consider the move to the Mojo to be a worthy 'upgrade'?
+audioman99 Yep. The Mojo is in a class of it's own.
Thanks Hans. I heard an Exasound E12 the other day too that was quite impressive. You should try to get your hands on one for a test drive.
I might, although there is European distributor. And it's three times the price of the Mojo... so not too relevant in this thread.
It is really better than the Meridian explorer 2 ?
No, of course not. I was just pulling your leg😜
Why should I praise a product I reviewed? Perhaps because it really is a lot better than other products in the same price bracket, let alone devices that come at two to three times lower prices. Having said that, if you are truly happy with the Explorer 2, be just that: happy with the Explorer 2.
When you say this hits way above its price range. Are you including desktop DAC/Amps or only portable ones?
Yes
Haha already got it :) I agree though. It's crazy how much better it is to another 500€ DESKTOP Amp/DAC I own.
both
Hi Hans, is it safe to assume that the Chord Mojo can satisfactorily power any headphone?
ps great vid! just subbed
ANY headphone would be a bolt statement but any normal headphone will work. The Mojo has more power than your smartphone, for instance.
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Thanks for the fast response!
we aim to please😀
more than enough for my 300 ohm sennheiser hd600 and 650
When are you going to test the Chord Quetest?
It is technically identical to the Hugo 2, so there is no point doing a separate review
What do you think about the NAD D1050?
+Stafa Thiam Nothing;-). I haven't reviewed it and thus have no opinion on it.
OK :). Ordered the Mojo before and it didn't work with my computer so I returned it, but guess what, I just ordered it again to use portably. Hopefully this time it works for the computer. Remembered the sound was nothing I've heard before, just top notch. Thanks again for the great review.
There is no reason why it shouldn't work with your computer (regardless the computer you own unless it it operated on steam).
+Stafa Thiam Also heard you say that you used the Audioquest Nighthawk. How good are those headphones?
Hans, the Mojo isn't the best dac sub 1500 money. The DragonFly Red is better in spatial information and nearly as good in providing transient information. Have a listen if u haven't already
well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Let's just agree to disagree.
Good to see you back in good health.
Not my Mojo...
In terms of overall sound quality: iFi iDSD Black Label , CEntrance DACportable or Mojo?
I only reviewed the Mojo, on the others I have no opinion
The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Those especially the ifi micro black label is the nearest competitor right now with people preferring it over the mojo. Of course I understand that some people’s reviews will be skewed because of the ifi’s beast of an amp for headphones but I would really be curious about your thoughts on them compared just as pure dacs.
how does oppo ha-2 compare to chord mojo?
I haven't reviewed the Oppo so I can't tell.
How about Chord Mojo 2 review?
that's not planned right now.
@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel no problem. I enjoy watching your video!
Thank you.
I wish it had a balanced 2.5mm output.
Can i get replacement for battery?
I understand that batteries have limited recharge cycles.
+chandrakiranraju This type of batteries have about 500 too 1000 cycles. When you use 50% of a charge and reload it again, that counts as half a cycle. The Mojo housing is screwed so it can't be difficult to replace the battery.
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Thanks, Great work!
+chandrakiranraju Chord Electronics gave this answer: "The battery will last for at least five years. If you charged Mojo every single day for this period of time the battery capacity would, typically, only reduce 20%. At the end of the batteries life we will be offering a service that replaces them for approximately £100."
+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Could you also tell me how long the battery lasts only in line out.

Did you like the sound of Nighthawk with Mojo?
I don't enjoy listening to any headphones so you'd better ask someone else. Sorry.
But Hans, isn't the mojo primarily built for iems and headphones??
A very good d/a-converter is a very good d/a-converter and the Mojo works like a charme as stationary d/a-converter. I use both the Mojo and the Hugo this way.
Are you looking forward to www.chordelectronics.co.uk/product/poly/ ??
I have applied for a review sample right away. We must be patient, I'm afraid.
Hi Hans
I know the Mojo, and all the Chord DACs have received excellent reviews in the European "press", but because I respect you & your reviews so much, I now have to give those other reviews more credence.
Anyway, have you had any experience with the Schiit Bitfrost Multibit DAC. It is the same price as the Mojo in the US, so it could be a valid comparison. Steve Guttenberg just gave it a good review on Cnet.com, but I don't consider his reivews meaningful. He's too much of a fanboi. www.cnet.com/news/the-good-schiit-bifrost-multibit-digital-converter/
The Bitfrost Multibit uses an off-the-shelf DAC, Analog Devices AD5547CRUZ, but with their own digital filter.
+Hans Beekhuyzen ....but I would love to be proven wrong.
Hans, thanks for responding.
You're probably right, and I like your "social engineering" comment. :)
I doubt it will do much good, but I sent Schiit an email suggesting they give you review samples.
Totsipaki yes. that's what I was thinking. maybe they're worth it for 250-300$. more than that ? nope. stay away.
It does not sound artificial at all, it sounds extremely natural.
@@dixienormous2440 all opinions are respected but that doesnt change mine. I still think mojo is not worth It. My cellpgone's amp sounded better. Of course what I say is not the "holy quran" so If It works for you enjoy It.
this guy not do a review , just talk talk talk like news host
+Daniel Honoardjo Might be true, but he does it in proper English;-)
How can we compare the sound signature of chord mojo and schiit modi multibit dacs. I want to buy one, but really confused. Haven't heard any of these.
I own the Mojo and it's great. Schiit doesn't seem willing to lend me a review sample, so I can't say anything about the Modi.
Thank you Hans
