    In all my years as a bird watcher (and feeder), one thing I've learned...Blue Jays absolutely LOVE peanuts! We used to buy one of those gigantic 40 pound bags of peanuts and they watched us unload the bag every time, screeching like crazy! I also learned that you should never feed them roasted peanuts either...it's best to give them the raw kind.

    • @VideoSaySo

      @@moraloeval851 Actually two reasons: Sometimes places will put that powdered salt on them after they're roasted. Like they do sunflower seeds. That's really bad for them, but they can also make them choke if they're not raw. I'm not sure why,

      I feed them ever morning. They wait for me to put them out. They are so mean to the squirrels though. I felt bad for them so I put a pile in the wood shed where the Blu Jays can't get at them. But now they wait for him to leave and ambush the squirrels as they come out.

    Whenever I see a lot of blue jays together, it seems like there's always one red-bellied woodpecker hanging out near them.
    Maybe because the jays provide good cover from predators, and the woodpecker can actually hold his own around bullying jays.

      Could also be that Blue Jays cache their bits of food and maybe the Red Bellied Woodpeckers are onto that game and steal from the Blue Jays' caches. I have seen squirrels and Blue Jays steal each others' caches for what it's worth...

      @Dana William Agree. The Blue Jays I see at my feeders always flee from other birds. I've seen Cardinals run them off. Doves run everything off, though. Even the Red Bellied Woodpecker doesn't tangle with Doves for some reason.

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 3 роки тому +13

      @@paulburns4721 Huh. The blue jays I've seen are the ones doing the bullying. Then again, there aren't many birds their size or larger around here. We've got woodpeckers and mourning doves, but they usually show up at different times or just aren't that interested in where the jays hang out.
      Well, that's not entirely correct. Grackles will run off *everything.*

    Update; Recently added a small, plastic porch table to the feeding area, and split the peanuts between that and the basket. With one crow, at least three jays and around seven magpies, it’s gotten the birds to stop being aggressive over who’s turn it is to take food. They also all really love plain cooked eggs, which I encourage you to try.

    This is somewhere in North America, right? It so amazing to observe your birds. We also have jays in Russia, but they look pretty different, we have woodpeckers but they are also not like that. Very exciting to watch those of yours!

      Yes, eastern North America. There are at 10 other "jays" in North America. The "Steller's Jay" is the western counterpart of the "Blue Jay." I looked up your Eurasian Jay and Siberian Jay.

      But you Russians are winning with UA-cam videos of people who own large pussycats (pumas, cheetahs, lynxes, bobcats, and leopards).

      Yes , I noticed when I went to Ireland that the blue jays and just about every bird and flower had a slight difference. Except sparrows they look the same everywhere.

      That is consistent with birds of the northeastern United States, not sure about the rest of "eastern North America."

    Bluejays are just about the most aggressive species of small bird you can find. Yet 5 Bluejays will haul ass away from a single mockingbird.

    • @Bacopa68
      @Bacopa68 3 роки тому

      That's because blue jays are corvids morphed into a songbird. And like all corvids, their natural aggression is informed by their high intelligence. The mockingbird is just a stupid songbird with a chip on its shoulder. The Jays are willing to negotiate, the mockingbird is not.
      I bet while the mockingbird was off being tough he lost his dead lizard to one of the jays who hung back.

    Love watching the blue jays but, they are greedy. I feed them peanuts out of the shell, amazing how many a blue jay can scarf up and take back to the nest.

    Awesome! I don’t have a backyard, as I own a third floor apartment condo suite. But I attach a basket to my balcony railing, put peanuts in it, and have fun watching the crows, bluejays and magpies pig out.
