Bought one this morning.
Are you using EQ or any kind of compression? This snare sounds remarkably focused and dry for a steel shell. Usually steel shells are quite ringy. Does the Gretsch throw on this snare work as smoothly as the DW MAG throw?
The Lightning throw-off is pretty smooth, not sure about the comparison with the DW MAG. The only downside of the Lightning throw are the lack of square head rods to adjust the snare wires. Same problem as most Ludwig USA drums. Just that.

I agree. That's the fattest and driest sounding steel snare I've heard.
I have the 13x7 version and it's quite dry and fat sounding. It's a really great snaredrum, especially for the money.
I have this exact drum and it’s really cool, great value for the money. I can definitely confirm that it sounds fat and dry, the video captures the vibe perfectly. The stiffer hoops add to the dryness for sure.
Steel is probably the least expensive metal snare and best value.
Gretsch Bronze snares , are probably the best sounding metal snares..
