Googling "does behringer make a Moog system 55" killed me.
Absolutely a literal Laugh Out Loud from here.
Fabulous. What a history. I just picked up a Behringer System 55 complete. Stoked to dive in.. especially after this gem. Bravo.
When you typed "does Behringer make a system 55 clone", I nearly fell off my chair laughing! Great video!
That was one of my favorite moments, taking a subtle jab... Ok, maybe not so subtle!
@@Syntaur It was brilliant. Thank you for the video! I am currently in front of my dotcom sequencer, thanks to this content! I have forgotten how bloody lovely it is!
@@xa1a me i'm in front of my grandmother moog that has the same Circuitry As the system 15
Can't fool me. It was the divining rod that did the trick!
You're right! But we edited otherwise to make for more drama! 🤣
A day when I discover a new episode of Synth Wizards is inevitably a good day.
That gives me a nice smile, thank you.
@@Syntaur you're very welcome! The videos are really well done and always interesting...even my wife, who knows nothing (nor cares) about synthesizers enjoys them. I'm registered on the forum as well. All the best!
These are so heartwarming. What a great result.
Btw 16:26 was your finest joke to date.
And such heartwarming feedback from my synth-video hero! Thank you, Alex.
I wonder what’s the synth in that shot.
Synth Wizards is the best show on UA-cam
Those are very kind words! And motivating to do more - thank you!
Cannot disagree!
Aw sweet, new episode of my favorite UA-cam occasional docuseries dropped! My complements to Sam and the production team!
Thank you! We have such fun making these, and I feel so blessed to be able to!
Another brilliant episode - I love the style of these, the drama and the comedy and the SYNTHS. Wow, my heart started racing when he finally opened that first box and we got a proper look at the Moog.
Yeah, I wish I had gotten to see it!
These are so wonderful and this is the best episode yet. As good as anything shot for mainstream TV but WAY more interesting!
Your kind words warm my heart...
I agree, but I'm not exactly objective on this episode. :)
i am REALLY having a good and expensive laugh on your humour and all the love you put into these wonderful movies.
Aw, man… this is so cool! I got “Switched-On Bach” for my birthday in 1973, and instantly fell in love with Carlos’s extraordinary work-and also that Moog modular synth behind JSB on the cover. In short order I bought all the other Carlos albums, and many of the ones that came after. A teenaged keyboardist myself, I knew I would have a synth of my own someday, and when I got older I started buying them. But none has been modular. At least so far. But maybe one o’ these days…
I always enjoy your videos, and this one was a treat. Congrats on all your finds, and thanks for the fine work. 😎
That is so cool - a birthday gift that takes your life in a new and wonderful direction! Thanks for the kind words.
Glad to see Walter Carlos mentioned. I once emailed Wendy from our mutual home city, Pawtucket.Rhode Island. To me, she replied telling me she had grown up in the same library. She later became my lifelong curiosity making music on a thing called a synthesizer..
This reminds me of those reality shows I always get stuck watching when I visit my parents. Except this was... entertaining. Great show guys! Congrats and keep up the great work. ♥️🙂👍
santa couldn't have got him a better gift!! .. woow
Cracked me up when you googled for a Behringer clone, great humour! 😂
I love poking a little fun...
this is better than a Netflix drama...Well done!!!
Thank you, those are very kind words. And very gratifying.
I agree. Very exciting, I loved it! I am in the process of my second viewing!!
Totally agree. Best regards from Germany
Great video! I"m up in Canada and snow is normal for us in the winter. Had to laugh at his terrified!
@@jeremythornton433 That snow is slippery, and cold. Isn't that terrifying?!? Lol, yes, I'm a snow sissy.
Just bought something from you guys. And then discovered this. Awesome work!!!
Best reality TV show not on TV. Well done, and thanks for parts over the years.
Thank you! It's those repair parts - and folks like you who purchase them - that allows us to be able to make this content!
The biggest mystery of this episode isn’t how he was able to find this rare synth, it’s how a bass music producer was able to afford one. Lol They don’t make shit for $$
They have day jobs. ;)
another fabulous film from Syntaur.
Thankyoul.
My God !!! What a wonderful world!!!
Carlos!!! Long time no see! Surprised to see you pop up here. I’ll definitely visit the place soon
Thank you Sir. Such an inspiring and beautiful documentary. I give you literally my last £2 in my account until payday. Thank you! I look forward to discovering your channel. Excellent voiceover.
Thank you so much, Kate!
syntaur alwasy has some great story about the synth like no other.
Thank you! I love diving into the history of synths we are after - there always seems to be an interesting story there!
Oh I've got three of these, one for each bathroom.
I don't think there's any other type of technology that's truly free to develope to be the best it can be for the benefit of humanity even automobiles and air space and communication are constrained by the invention secrecy act of 1955 but music technology is going to the stars
That's a cool perspective! And I think that music itself has a much deeper benefit to humanity than most people realize. In my case, I grew up in a fairly racist environment, and as I discovered more and more music, I also discovered that my musical heroes were not the right color of people that I was 'supposed' to admire. So it's very interesting to me how loving music can lead to a fundamental change in a person.
Synthesizers 4ever
Yes - I think this fad is catching on!
Yes
Wow wow wow. What a great story!
"Not to be used as a flotation device" XD
It works for floating in sonic heaven maybe....
I must say very beautiful video.
Great video guys! And, now I know who to call when I need parts, advice, or a System 55😅
Haha, we do love a challenge! Thank you.
Im surprised capacitors didnt dry up sitting for years. Amazing
Well that was fun! Thanks for your contributions to the Synth community! We are a lucky lot to say the least 😊
The synth community is indeed a special lot - and it is an honor to think we've made a meaningful contribution to it. I feel like we Syntaurians are the lucky ones!
Its like watching morning TV when I was a kid. Goes great with a nice cup of coffee. My comfort synth show!
If only we could make a cartoon episode... What fun that would be!
@@Syntaur Great idea!
Random thoughts while toking a bone while zoning on this scroll:
Wow, it's been a while and I was starting to wonder if I'd ever see another episode of the Synth Wizards, but it seems y'all have really upped the ante and outdone yourselves once again. Keep it up!
REPRESENT KALAMAZOO(zoo-zoo-z00z00z00oo。
If you ever require a designated, professional winter-weather driver, I'd like to think my services would be helpful...but you did just fine, and in an ad-hock Synthmobile at that! Bravo! Bravo!
Fascinating to see how exceedingly rare, monolithic, and iconic synthesizers change hands nowadays... not too dissimilar to massive quantities of Peruvian Fishscale, or the political fortunes of those students of Machiavelli and Sun Tzu, or so I guess.
On an unrelated note...at this point, when is Syntaur just going to come out with a new take on a legendary synth or Frankinstein's Monster of its own Taurine Simulacran design? I mean, with the amount of knowledge, experience, and access to components that you have, you could really give somebody like Black Corporation a run for their money, and I for one would love to lay down a few grand for whatever you might come up with in favor of buying a Deckard's Dream or an Ise-Nin. That's highly speculative...about as speculative as my feeling that the people at Black Corporation may not be of the utmost integrity. I mean, dude got run out of Japan...JAPAN! Like sure maybe it was just political, and I'm all but SURE Black Corpo pissed off the wrong people at Roland *and* Yamaha, but I mean damn. How shady does one have to be before even the Japanese drop their polite facade and run you out of town?? Carlos Ghosen shady, apparently...
That was a tangent... Bottom Line: BUILD THE SYNTH WIZARD HIS STAFF! Like the 20, but a one-off - no expense spared. ALL THE FILTER TYPES AND ALL THE FILTER TOPOLOGIES. 🗿
HOLY iSH*T THE SERIAL NUMBER IS PRIME - a 45.4545(repeating) percent probability, out of the 1-55 prime set.
I love that Kalamazoo-zoo-zoo-zoo-zoo-zoo song!
And we have discussed building our own keyboard instrument. I'm not sure it will ever happen, but we're knocking around some ideas....
@@Syntaur Honestly, the level of dedication you guys have for synthesizer necromancy is unparalleled in the industry, and if any thing we need more people doing what you do than we need you to build an original synth. But I think that building a one-off synth or even extending that to a limited edition based on prototype/proof of concept would be a worthwhile endeavor to test your mettle, do something the whole team finds fulfilling, and moves you ALL further toward becoming self-actualized (and/or maintaining self-actualization, for those who have already achieved it).
I think the joy you all bring people by sourcing and selling them the vintage equipment they *know* they want is WAY more honorable and responsible (for the planet) than drumming up new GAS in potential customers by creating and then trying to convince people to buy more hardware that they didn't know they wanted (and probably don't anyway).
@@Syntaur I wasn't so sure you didn't already build one when I saw that "Juno 107."
Great documentary 👍
18:58 This CANNOT BE A THING. It made my brain explode just looking at it :D
I loved that 'suitcase sculpture'! It's not really my wife's luggage - she doesn't even bring half that amount, lol! Another commenter pointed out that there are similar things in several airports (this one was in Sacramento).

Every day Syntaur uploads is a good day!
That is wonderful to hear, thank you!
As often an Excellent Video!
What an adventure, I realy hope you'll try this System 55 one day.
This line ended up on the cutting room floor, but I actually got to spend some good time with a Moog modular in the electronic music lab at LSU, my alma mater, back in the early 1980's. I'd love to know what became of that system - I hope they didn't scrap it and get a DX7 instead!
@@Syntaur come hang out and play!
Hi. Greetings from Finland
Very interesting video and so well done.
And yes I got CS-80.
Thanks for sharing this inspiring movie.
Now you're making us all jealous with that CS80! And you are probably better at dealing with snow than I am, lol!
Keep doing these as you can. I have to ask, was some of the background music I heard from the Juno-107, namely using the patch sweep?
Yes, there was one track in there that started with the 107 patch sweep. Good aural synth spotting!
wow! y'all were up in my home county! so cool! next time you're up in Nevada County for whatever reason (hopefully when it's less snowy) yall should stop by Nevada City/Grass Valley! quaint couple of small towns up there with a vibrant music scene
We did, in fact, stop there! I have a relative in Nevada City, so we snuck in a visit. It is a beautiful area!
Great episode!
Excellent episode, again!
Thank you for the impetus to keep making more!
As someone who just got himself a Moog, I have to say I love that this released today. I love your channel!!!
My Moog love is plenty apparent in this vid, but since you bring it up, I gotta tell this story:
My very first synth was a Moog Satellite (about as bare-bones as you can get, but still a Moog!), and one night in New Orleans, just before a gig, our sound guy backed the equipment truck over it. The top octave was flattened, the thing was crazy bent up and smashed. I got a pair of pliers and a screwdriver, and pried up the flattened keys, plugged it in, and played it on the gig!!! Now THAT is build quality!
@@Syntaur That's amazing! You truly are a WIZARD!!! That felt like a bit of bonus content and I can't thank you enough for the kind reply! Now I'm off to play with my new Subsequent 37! Cheers! :D
@@Syntaur wow! My first synth was a moog satellite as well! Never saw anyone else with one, but I think I was the first kid in my county to have a synthesizer! I ended up trading it for a clarinet. My second was a Kitten by Octave, and the third was an oberheim two voice.
@@garycitro1674 Satellite -> Kitten -> Two Voice - that is a wonderful ascension up the ranks of synthesizers! I'm holding back on any clarinet jokes.
Okay but Behringer DOES make a System 55 clone
Your wife's look in the intro is priceless!!
She is priceless! She is so supportive of this crazy stuff that I do - how lucky can I guy get?!?
@@Syntaur I couldn't help but think that she is one patient and understanding woman. She must be wonderful!

Thank you
Hi! That's me :) Search for Freq Noir and you will find all the things
Hi I’m new to your channel. You all make great videos. Thanks from Arizona Gary
Welcome aboard, Gary! Syntherily yours, Sam.
I'm very sorry to bother you, I just wanted to let you know something about Emerson, Lake and Palmer.. In your video here, you'd mentioned that it was Keith Emerson who'd played the Keyboard for Emerson, Lake and Palmer. It actually was Greg Lake, and not Keith Emerson. Keith Emerson was the lead vocalist for E.L.P, Carl Palmer was the Drummer, and Greg Lake was the Keyboard player. It was Greg Lake, and not Keith Emerson.. I didn't want to be the one person who had corrected you on this, just kinda thought it was a much needed correction to the video.. Oh before I go ahead and forget Love your channel!!.. Keep up the amazing work you are doing fantastic job all across the board...
LOVE ITTTTTTTT !! Love you guys x
The respect is mutual, my man!
What a great story. To get a new one out the box not used. I’m saying any item.
Great work Sam.
Thank you, m8! We had a blast doing this one, despite the anxiety!
Best Episode ever!
Epic ; )
Thank you so much! We're learning as we go, so I hope they keep getting better...
It’s pretty interesting how you nailed the traditional TV voiceover tone, but you aren’t constrained to 24 minute runtimes or gimmick segments!
Thank you - I worry the voiceover gets too monotonous...
@@Syntaur I don’t think so! Quite to the contrary - the traditional TV approach is intended to keep aural interest up! And you’ve got good pacing between voiceover, inserted clips, and B-roll :)
I LOVE this stuff!!
Thanks, Thomas, because we sure love making it!
Hey Sam! Isn't that Michael Boddicker's Original System 55 (and system 15) you show early on in the video? He told me that you paid him a visit here in LA not too long ago...
Yes indeed! He generously let me come in and film that bit. He is always so busy, and yet so generous with his time - wonderful guy!
@@Syntaur Indeed! We recently have become good friends, even though he’s been a hero and inspiration since the 80’s. They say that you should never meet your heroes; he is a notable exception. Speaking of folks I admire, I had the good fortune of meeting you at SynthPlex this year when I was acting as one of the docents at its Pop -up Symth Museum.
@@pacathomas Yes! And what an unbelievable room full of history that was! Not just synths, but Tom Oberheim, who put up with me asking him to sign my OB-Xa end panel... You must have had a blast being a part of that!
@@Syntaur It was a gas! My favorite memory is Steve Porcaro showing up, going over to an OBx and playing the opening chords to "Africa". And Stevie Wonder's 4-voice replete with the Braille DynoLabel stickers all over it.
“Flotation device”?! 🤣
It's nuts the warning labels we see on products, at least here in the US. So I like poking fun at that nonsense. I once bought a small metal rack that simply had to be screwed together (I mean with small, screws about 1/4-inch long), and seriously - according to the instructions, I needed ANSI-approved safety goggles before I took a screwdriver in hand to assemble it.
Must have cost a fortune
Always a pleasure to see another SW episode!
Thank you - it's always great fun to make them!
Am I missing something? Who buys a synthesiser for £55,000 and doesn't even take it out of the box?
A rich speculator
Well, he had plans to build a super synth studio, and then some other things took priority. So he graciously let that beautiful instrument go to someone else. Very cool guy!
Thats exactly what I would do, if I had to much money: buy everyting and put it into my storage. And call myself a collector.
Like before watching.
Well, I admire your confidence! Thank you.
@@Syntaur Totally worth my time as always. Keep up the good work.
Back to reality.
I actually have a Moog but it’s the rogue the budget version they made for radio shack. Unfortunately it’s missing a key and the knobs and slider’s don’t work very well. If you check my videos you can see that I have a collection of “bad gear “ that has gone from Old school to just old. Roland MC-307, micro korg, korg esx1 and a few other things that I have no idea even where to start to get them fixed
The Rogue is a great-sounding lil synth! The MG-1 was the Radio Shack synth, but it too sounds great. People in the synth community are great at helping each other out - maybe you can find someone nearby who can get you going on some repairs to that cool stuff!
Still in the crate, never opened. Why do people spend so much money on a limited piece of gear? Investment? Moog and such should prevent that behaviour. It's such a pity that there are System55 never truly used.
It's hard to wrap your head around how a modular synthesis works.
It's a great way to learn synthesis - but you have to start simple! If you look at a huge modular system, like those we show here, it is very daunting and complicated. But if you start out with a basic system, I think you would catch on quickly - and have a much better understanding of how a synthesizer works, compared to tweaking knobs or parameters on a 'self-contained' synth.
@@Syntaur definently, I actually am pretty adept at using a Prophet-V and even then I had to read up how all the parts talk to one another, just to get it to make a simple string sound.
A different Sam (LMNC) mentioned the Make book on Analog Synthesizers a few weeks ago, so I got a copy. It goes all the way from a chapter on how to solder, to building the "Noise Toaster", which is a patch-less synth with six modules. That can give you a starting point as to which modules usually connect to which other modules, and how they interact with each other.
I was already at the level of knowing how the stuff worked. It's the actual circuits that I'm interested in. So I'm getting parts together to build one a module at a time. (Actually, I already had most of the parts.)
I need to know how much 😂
Sorry, some stuff we like to keep secret, out of respect for the parties involved.
@@Syntaur haha no problem I’m just messing around anyways haha better to keep the mystery alive
In the early 1980’s my friend had one and I was into prophets etc and thought it made a nice door stop
I always find collecting for the sake of collecting when it comes to instruments so strange. It's like collecting brushes and never painting or something lol.
(I know that wasn't stated in the video, the guy who had a Moog in a crate just made me think of it)
Ben (the seller) does indeed have an impressive collection - but he 'paints with those brushes'. In fact, a lot of the music used in this episode was his.
I too have mixed emotions about collectors who never use the instruments - though now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever met one! But I do think there's something to be said for preserving these for future generations.
👍
I WANT to get into Modular synths sooo bad! Oh oh! I think I wet myself. Don't tell my wife. At least I have a Moog Grandmother to start with on my modular journey. Several other synths to but they're not even semi modular. But my Korg Kronos rocks!
It's very cool, because you can basically design your own synth with modular. But it's a rabbit hole - I'm warnin' ya! Don't worry, though, I won't mention it to the Mrs.
Is that his wife? You know when you see some women who are so homely they transcend it almost becoming cute. Well that's one there
💙
I wonder how much this was? 50? More?
Sorry, out of respect for all involved parties, we don't share that info.
Well the italian guy wanted into 6 figures. So you if you're talking a guy into selling it, you know it's gonna be somewhere damn near considering how many were made.
You should be making proper films ..I would hire you. All you needed was the Afrika Corp on that journey. (Indiana Jones)
Sam et al. Thanks for going on this adventure. The people involved in the vintage synth world are the best people in all of music in my experience. What adventure will we go on next? who knows! heheh. I will be posting videos of making different patches and explorations on my channel @freqnoir I really love you guys and your energy. -David
Thanks, David, it was an amazing adventure, and I'm glad we could share it with the synth world!
17:30 Seems that's what this all boils down to...
I hope I didn't portray that this is all about the money - I was just trying to find a dramatic movie reference. Maybe I should have yelled, "Show me the oscillators!"
