So I ordered a very nice 5A 1 piece top Les Paul Custom and when it came, I felt the pickups were too hot (490/498 combo)... I swapped them out with the under-wound Custombuckers and I love the tone now... perfect.
You'd definitely have to A-B them using the exact same pickups. I have 5, custom, standard and 3 traditionals all ranging in weight, appointments, etc. When swapping pickups between any number of them, it sounds exactly like the one that used to have those pickups. Took me a long time to unsubscribe to the tone wood, shape, weight, finish, age thing but when i did experiments with my all my strats and Gibsons all sounded identical to the previous (provided a nearly identical bridge and nut were present). Ironically, years ago all the Paul Reed Smith rants pushing tonewood,is what made me test it and actually ended up proving him wrong. I swapped pickups from an LP into my custom 24 10 top and Viola! It sounded like a Gibson. Imagine that 😂 ever so slight difference, but the nut and bridge attribute to that slight difference imo

The Slash sounds brighter to me a touch
That is so interesting! Wow....it's amazing the different tones people hear, it's subjective for sure. Thanks for the comment!
@@Rocco11510 I could just be dumb too lol
Aye yo Mikey!
The custom sounds nicer to my ears
Are fishmans a new standard in the Customs? This is a bizarre comparison it's not really your normal Custom and Standard is it?'
