I already have a good paying job and I've dabbled in photography as 'extra money' and I can say for sure, I'm very happy to keep it as a passion only. I can do what I want, when I want (or nothing at all photography related) and not have any issues. No concerns or worries about customers, etc.

Thumbs up x100, I don't see a lot of videos like this and no one is talking about this at all. Best video I've seen yet!! Thanks.

The best video of you. Honest, truthful, awakening... 👍🏻
The dilemma between feeding your own soul and feeding your family. The idea of dating beautiful girls is not same as marrying someone (a real person, possibly not looking like a fun Instagram girl) and looking after kids, dressing them for the school, taking them to the dentist... Spending your time -for working- for others, rather than just for your self... You need more than love to be able to do all these 🔹

I keeping saying that "I don't want it to stop being fun". When I go to a wedding as a spectator everyone loves my pics and they say "We should have hired you". I do candid shots from a spectators point of view and not the traditional photographers positions. Creating shots from those angles are fun, and that's what I don't want to lose. Love this segment... thank you

There is a flip side to this. If you are working in a job that you absolutely hate that's not good for you either. You really have to like what you do to be successful at it. Otherwise you are just twiddling your thumbs until it's time to go home, waiting for the weekend to start, dreading Monday mornings and can't wait until your vacation. I have a family member who is a manager. When he hires people he asks them questions to find out if the employee is going to like working and be a good team player. He told me about an instance where he noticed an employee not up to par with what is expected on the job. He sat down with the guy and said if he didn't like that kind of work he needs to find something he likes to do and do it. So, if you don't have any kind of passion for your business or your job then it will be torture and you really need to find something you like to do whether or not you are working for yourself or a company.

Great video, Pye. I love photography as a hobby and passion, but I wouldn't want the stress of doing it full time and relying on it to pay the bills (ESPECIALLY weddings). I've done some shoots for friends and they paid for my restaurant bill, but I've never done it professionally. However, I still put a lot of time and effort into my post-processing and compositions. I take my photography seriously, even though it's not my primary employment. It's something I will always love to do for fun, but I feel like any hobby that is turned into a job no longer is a hobby, and the passion slowly decreases over time. This video is great for anyone wanting to turn any hobby into a profession. Well done, and well said. 👍

Great advice, especially the 80/20 part. After retiring from a career in anesthesia and grandchildren playing sports, I started a sport photography business ( photography has been a hobby ) and it was fun and without pressure as I don't rely on it for income. Never having had my own business, I had to learn about that 80% which takes time like state sales tax, applying to high schools to be a vendor, replying to numerous e-mails and networking with Athletic directors etc. Thanks, sage advise...

This is something I have thought about even with y hobbies. I hear, "If you love working on PCs and photography, why not turn that into your job?" It's just that I don't want to be forced into having a set schedule and deadlines. Being able to just work and shoot on my schedule is important to me. The therapeutic aspect of just creating is something I really appreciate.

Nicely worded. The whole problem is the difference between "have to" and "want to".

In today's climate lines become increasingly blurred between passion and business. Almost anything can become a side hustle. And for many people photography is that. it's not their primary source of income but it's something they do as a passion and they're willing to take on some selective contracts for payment.
Ultimately, I think this is the best way to dip your feet into turning any kind of passion into a business. If your livelihood doesn't completely depend on the income from your passion you'll get a taste of what it's like to work for clients I'm still be able to be selective about the contracts you take and earmark more or less time for passion versus process.
Personally I think a happy medium can be found with multiple passions in your life. And while they might not amount to the income of a salary job one can do pretty well for themselves operating this way.

Very well thought out video. I like how several of the points are really reiterated of the point before with the finer nuances. While watching this the news channel announced a blurb on changing your hobby into an business. I wonder if they will give the whole story.

Great video to bring realism to the fantasy side of the discussion. I did commercial graphics work on a contact basis for many years and that can definitely frustrate the creative side of you. A happy customer is a paying customer! I used to teach cycling spinning classes for several years because, well, I enjoy cycling and the workout inside during the cold months and getting paid to do it sure beats sitting on a couch. The problem comes in when that fun thing becomes a job and management gets in the way, etc. Finally dropped that and spin on my own if not outside cycling but definitely ride more outside year round now as well. Back to being all fun! I've considered doing some contract photo work to help offset this hobby expense and to be able to pick and choose what I want to do, but in no way plan to make it a primary income source. Good advice video. 👍👍

Agree mostly, but running your own business compared to working a standard job allows a greater deal of flexibility in most circumstances. You can pick the times you want to work instead of some manager scheduling your hours for you. Admittedly, you might need to accommodate to your customers needs occasionally, especially to start, but that is ultimately your decision to make.

If you, as a photography amateur, fail with a photo, nobody - not even you - will care, because it was just for fun. But if you fail as a professional photographer, this will create trouble, because you need results, to be able to pay the bills for your company.
Also you can see a lot of professional photographers, which are starting to sell videos about photography, because they have got problems, since Covid has started everywhere.
And here in europe, the governments seems to make a contest, to figure out new ways of restrictions during the lockdowns. That´s not a good moment, to start a business. It´s exactly the opposite: you are lucky, if you (your company) can survive.
I would say: In the next years, i will be sticky to keep photography as a passion. So i can complete my equipment with things, which i would want to have in the future.

I respect the video but need to change perspectives because social media promotes this phantom nonsense ...
Passion and business can go together. Just because you run and manage a business for yourself don't mean you automatically don't have a passion for it and it's just purely "business only/My job". It's why we start businesses because we expand on the passion we have for it and want more ... WHILE CREATING REVENUE at the same time. Don't let social media erase the difference and develop false perception between "doing your job" VS "Being passionate about your job". Elements of passion and business are hand and hand and how one chooses its' path is 100% on that person. I see people especially social media believe because one makes revenue, they're not passionate which makes 100% no sense. 20 years in this business happy every day and doing what I love FOR MYSELF vs quitting or simply not happy and sad when I wake up knowing I have to do something I don't like or want to do (whether for me or the man). Money don't determine passion for what they love, I quit my $19.00/hr job to start my career at the time, haven't looked back and I do more unto others more than anything.

Some jobs are intended for professional photographers. Amateur photographers can't really feel that sensation. Some people do things they don't like for the rest of their lives. In order to wait for the life that you like after retirement Don't be afraid to go out of the box

Yeah i think it just depends on what kind of photography you're doing in your business. I watch professionals all the time who absolutely love what they do
