When I was a little kid, our neighbors came home with a new 59 Lincoln Premier, I can still remember it, its was a Pink color ( I think it was called coral) with black fabric interior with white trim I was so impressed. My Uncle had a very nice 58 Imperial but to me that Lincoln was something
Only thing about this car, was Lincoln Mercury lost millions building this car, and with the Glamorous new Lincoln came out in 1961, it made this design look old in a hurry

Yegads!! They were a block long and half a block wide. Had a neighbor who rebuilt one and had a chance to ride in it a few times. The ride was phenomenal. The owner took it over some railroad tracks and you would never have known it. I have never experienced a ride like that since.

I can't think of a more radical transformation in automotive history than the 1960 vs 1961 Lincoln. I mean the 58-60 Lincolns were so overwrought, a really kooky, tacky, IMO ridiculous design. Personally I think the 58-60 Lincolns are a lot of fun in an ironic sense, just because they are so overwrought and kooky. Cadillac was kicking their butts from 58-60 in terms of styling/design.
Then all the sudden the new understated 1961 Lincoln came in and introduced a new design language that resonated thru the rest of the decade. Gone were tail fins and any extra ornamentation, it was all about the sleek lines and minimalism.

    • @Johnnycdrums
      @Johnnycdrums 2 роки тому

Horrible design, and they knew it.
Too long, too low (rode on 14's), and with a hideous looking front end.
They wised up quick and went back to the minimalist ideology from the 55'-56' Continental.
Following the success of the next generation starting in 61' (like you said), they never looked back to the point that when they came out with the new Mark III in 68 1/2", it was as if the old one never existed.
Unfortunately, the gaudy look came back with the new Mark IV in 1972 with that stupid opera window, longer length, and get ready for the malaise era attitude.

There will never again be cars with this type of craftmanship! If you ever get a chance to own this convertible or four door hardtop I gaurantee you will be the talk and envy of all people you meet.At the time the 1958-1960 lincolns were competing against cadillac and in my humble opinion though cadillac did better sales wise in those yrs the lincoln designs were by far better and classy distinction that cannot be duplicated!I am a owner of a 1959 lincoln premiere white four door hardtop and a get crowded with admirers everywhere I go!Hard to believe ford, lincoln lost $60 million making theses beautiful beasts! It truly was the american dream car to have then and its an honor to own one now! you might want to search out the issue of Automobile Quarterly that features this cars development, if you havent already , pretty interesting.Good Luck with your car. If its running fine I think the one thing I would do if not too difficult is drop the oil pan and change out the pick up screen, many older cars , even lots of newer ones die because the y get clogged with cooked oil .

The craftsmanship on these cars was nothing to write home about. You're probably thinking about the 1956-7 Continental Mark II which was hand built. These cars lost Lincoln money because they sold so poorly, not because they were so well built. Cadillac trounced Lincoln and Imperial during these years. If you drive one of these barges, yes, people will talk, but not because they are envious. They will talk because the styling is in amazingly bad taste.

@@califdad4 Exactly. In my opinion, the 1961-'63 Camelot Continentals are design icons of that period.
I've always wanted one. There is a website called Automotive Milepost. It features full specifications, colors, standard equipment, options, brochure photography, and show car history of these cars.
I love the frenched in power antenna molded into the deck lid chrome strip of the '61 and '62 with the added power of the '63.
I dream of Nocturne Blue w/ Silver or Honey Beige leather interior or Presidential Black w/ Silver Black & White, or Honey Beige leather interior.
I wanted to be a automobile designer but my career took a different path. However, if I had to restore a total wreck, the only custom touch I'd try would be to give a '61-'63 hidden headlights.
Correct grille. Just obtain a second one, recess the headlamps and try using a updated, all electrical system from a late '60's Cougar, Thunderbird or MK III.
I'd never do it to a decent survivor, but their prices are so astronomical, I doubt I'll ever be able to afford anything but one that needs a ground up restoration I can buy at reasonable cost and restore over time.
      Me and my car dreams..lol
