    In this episode we take you to our journey to Italy we made in 2019. While having way too much film cameras to choose we took my beloved POINT & SHOOT film camera to the trip. The Konica Big Mini HG. It doesn't matter which camera you got as long as it suits your needs. And keep in mind. The best camera is the one thats with you. Since I got the Konica I take this everywhere I go. Just point and shoot. It's great because you stay in your moment without thinking to much about metering focus f stop and shutter speed. The only concern is should I pull or push the film .. ahh .. don't know ... click ..
    We shot about 10 rolls and some of these photos turned out great .. I think.. hope you like them too.
    1 roll of Cinestill 800 T
    2 rolls of Kodak Ultramax
    the rest is shoot on Kodak Portra 400
    no Fuji Pro 400 H this time sorry for that but it was really hard to shop film in Rome and kind of hard in Neapel.
    Please feel free to like share and subscribe.
    Thanks for watching.
    Cheers analoge film lovers.

      Thank you very much. It's the camera we take with us pretty often and are amazed by the results with every roll we shot. But sadly 2 out of 3 BMs broke shortly after each other just by using them. So I'm kind of skeptical about the reliability. Thankfully the one we used in this video is still by our side. We love this little camera and would try to fix it, when things went wrong. (:

    I have three versions of Olympus Stylus. Not bad cameras but.. My go-to pocket camera is my Konica Big Mini HG. :)

    • @raisinggrain8672
      @raisinggrain8672  3 роки тому

      Similar here, but we have three big minis and no Olympus stylus, but an af twin..
      I think the big mini is a pretty overlooked camera. but being honest: I don't know why.. it's not that overshaped in terms of design, it's relatively good build, and if it breaks it has done an amazing job... it's a go to and a go for camera :)

      @@raisinggrain8672 I think that one of the Big Mini's attractions is the lens. Konica made outstanding lenses and my Big Mini's 35mm f/3.5 lens is excellent. Olympus made great lenses, too, but I don't think the ones on my collection of Styluses (Stylii?) are quite as good. The Big Mini's automatic exposure system is, to me, outstanding. Again, the Stylus is good but I think the Big Mini is better. It also fits my average sized hands better, I think. One advantage of the Stylus is that it seems to be better sealed against moisture: it isn't waterproof but drizzle and condensation don't seem to bother it much.
      Another advantage of my three Styluses is that I gotten dirt cheap: my first (black Stylus) was $5 at a thrift store, the next gold one was new in the box $0.25 at a neighborhood yard sale and the third was given to me. I may have only paid $35 for the Big Mini online years ago but it's hard to beat my investment in Styluses!

    amazing stills my friend!
    Can i ask you which film roll you preferred to shoot in this particular camera, from the above mentioned?

    • @raisinggrain8672
      @raisinggrain8672  4 роки тому +1

      Facu Bartucci Thank you very much. I love the photo of the gasstation scene, which was shot on the Cinestill 800 as we walked by. We loaded the cinestill the night before the flight, but the rest of the roll turned out only okay. It was pretty hard to color correct, because of iso 800 and the „not too fast“ max. shutter speed. As always the Portra 400 brought the most lovely pictures on that trip. Beside this the Portra 400 and 800 is also my go to film in 120 for portraits and casual stuff. Fuji Pro 400 for shiftet architecture shots, but i will make the switch to portra again, because it is more versatile in my opinion. Most recently we decided to shoot more kodak colorplus on sunny days with the point and shoot. If you love a bit of grain in your stills and want to save huge money, the colorplus is a good , but slow alternative. If your question is a „one film forever on a lonely island“ question, the Portra 400 will come with us. Lovely colors, very push and pullability, nice grain structure and good price compared to 800. :)
      Thank you very much for your comment.

    Lovely editing, man! On @0:40 for that vhs look- did you use something off red giant universe presets in after effects to get that look? I wonder :)

    • @raisinggrain8672
      @raisinggrain8672  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you. Actually this is not a filter. I used the red giant vhs filter for other videos, this is a pretty amazing filter they created. But since this is the only universe filter i used, i descided to use our not that old mini DV camcorder. (Panasonic nv-gs 1, black magic ultrastudio minirecorder, some sort of chinch to hdmi converter... a filter might be a bit more convenient, i guess 😅 ) thank you very much for your comment. Cheers

      @@raisinggrain8672 Ok, man. A few things:
      1. You're a genius :)
      2. I thought it was a plugin cause you also used a "Super8-like" plugin later on (what was it btw?)
      3. I am all up for organic VHS footage. I do have a similar Panasonic nv-ds model (my nv-gs has hiccups😅 ), and I have an old SONY Hi8 camcorder too, but I think the mini-DV format has better look/resolution to works with digital 1080 while still keeping that VHS look.
      My question is- I never knew about this Blackmagic mini-recorder! I use an Elgato converter which isn't a live recorder. Does this mean you're getting a 1080 video out of that Blackmagic gadget? Because the native resolution of mini-DV is 720x480 tops!

    • @raisinggrain8672
      @raisinggrain8672  3 роки тому

      @@eladbari Thank you very much :) it's great you enjoyed the video and are interested in how it was made. I don't know the native resolution to be honest, but what I recognized was a bit strange: after digitalizing hundreds of hours and editing a 45min mini-documentary about my family, I was pretty sure that the old VHS footage is a bit more pleasing and better in color, skintones, maybe also DR …compared to the Panasonic. The NV-GS has more sharpness, I guess, but it seems more like a computer generated sharpness of a smaller pixel image… Keeping in mind that VHS is an analog and MiniDV is a digital format it’s becoming conclusive… more or less..i think.. :) …. BM UltraStudio MiniRecorder made a 720p 60p file, but I think the noname Cinch to HDMI Converter made a silly upscaled version of the original (maybe pal) footage.. …The filter is actually not a ready made one. This was made by layering frame boarders and light leaks captured by Ezra Cohen or Tropic Colour on top of my heavily color graded bmpcc footage in fcpx. I would love to shoot real 8mm and 16mm film, but we develop and scan nearly everything by our self, and shooting real motion picture film might be a bit time and money consuming for yt.. ..Currently we are working on two more episodes simultaneously, which need to be tweaked a bit before releasing.. but we will, very soon.. I would love to hear your thoughts on that, because we tried to implement a kind of film, narrative style.. Would love to hear your thoughts. cheers :)

      @@raisinggrain8672 First off, sure thing, man. I hope to catch your next uploads. Just subscribed.
      Now, regarding Super8- I shot one roll before and it's an amazing experience. Find something worthy to shoot, choose a sunny day and do it!
      Now, regarding the MiniDV thing:
      1. First, I originally thought it was a heavily modified DSLR image because the motion of that footage felt like DSLR [apart of the zoom ins]. You kept that camera very steady and you swinged from side to side...so it felt like it. Again, great touch adding that to the mix.
      2. If I understood well, you meant that you expected that Mini-DV footage to be more high quality/res than what you really got at the end?
      I get it. I think you can also see by how you kept it windowed in your 4k frame.
      So, of course you blew up the image about x2 x3 times it's original size and it still looks good. So, how did you do it?
      I think Davinci Resolve has an ability to blow up footage and still keep details well.
      What method did you choose?
      And what's the original captured file? 720X480 you say?

      Thank you very much. It was filmed with a Panasonic (NV-GS1) Mini DV Camera, which was forgotten on my shelf for years, but still working great. Because only the later models have a to-pc-port it had to be digitalized via BlackMagic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder and a Cinch to HDMI Converter Unit. Cable Spaghetti at its finest. Auto flash? Can I leave the flash off?

    • @raisinggrain8672
      @raisinggrain8672  3 роки тому

      Yes, it has auto flash, when the metering tells it should fire with flash, a red light nearby the viewfinder indicates it. But you can turn the flash off or switch it to red eye reduction mode. Whatever mode you are shooting in, turning the camera off resets it to auto flash.

      Hi Leeroy,
      Might be a contact Problem of the shutterbutton?:
      We have 3 Big Minis and one of them only shoots after clicking the left side of the shutterbutton in a specific angle.
      If the camera seems to capture but you end up with blank images, the leafshutter might be stuck..

      As I know: The LCD is big mini’s achillis.. Small issue, but due to missing spare parts not really economically fixable. ..With some luck you can order a flex cable to repair this by yourself.. but be carefull, these types of cameras do have flash capacitors !
