In addition to his standing as a renowned scholar and antiquarian, Montague Rhodes James (1862 - 1936) remains one of the most influential and revered writers of ghost stories in the English language.
In his 1929 essay "Stories I Have Tried To Write", James alluded to a number of stories, which were never completed to what he deemed a satisfactory standard. One of these is described as the tale of ""two students at King's College in the sixteenth century ... and their nocturnal expedition to a witch at Fenstanton". Many years after James' death, Rosemary Pardoe discovered the unpublished original manuscript for this story entitled The Fenstanton Witch and published it in the twelth issue of the newsletter Ghosts and Scholars in 1990. The story was also included shortly after in Richard Dalby's enjoyable 1991 anthology Tales of Witchcraft and has since appeared in several more recent collections of James' ghost stories. However, it still remains one of the least widely read and anthologised of his works.
The Fenstanton Witch is actually set in the 18th Century - during the reign of Queen Anne - and concerns the strange exploits of two students at Kings College, Cambridge. Quiet and withdrawn in their outward habits, the inseparable pair are in fact practitioners of black magic. However, when they pay a nocturnal visit to the newly dug grave of an alleged witch at nearby Fenstanton, they encounter far more than they bargained for...

I have an inherited neurological condition, semi related to Parkinsons. My life is now spent on my back, on a cheap mattress, with my knees and back both propped up by a big pile of pillows & blankets.
I can see a PC screen, on a table near my bed. My right hand rests on my stomach. It holds a PC mouse. Which I can manipulate quite well.
From this situation, thanks to people who give their time to post wonderful things on UA-cam, there is so much I can do.
I can roam the earth, learning about plants and animals that died out 250 million years ago, or listen to fantastic and fantastical stories.
I'm not complaining about my circumstance. I am SO lucky that I live in this age, and that there are people, who I've never met and never will, who enrich my life hugely.

I agree Patricia. James wrote far more effective and terrifying stories than this, but the description of the university, etc, in this period is still very evocative and fascinating.
