Liberal MP speaks out on vaccine mandates, calls for roadmap to end restrictions

- Liberal MP Joël Lightbound criticized some of the stances of his own party on Tuesday, saying the various public health measures have become confusing to many and called on the government to provide a clear roadmap for when restrictions would end.
"(People are) worried because they feel it is becoming harder and harder to know where public health stops and where politics begins," he said.
Lightbound encouraged the government to provide measurable targets to lifting restrictions, though did say he was not implying that public health measures should be lifted right away. He also asked for epidemiological data behind restrictions going forward be published so people can see the information determining what measures need to be in place.
The Liberal MP also spoke about the ongoing anti-mandate protests that started as a response to cross-border vaccine mandates, saying that messaging amid the demonstrations is dividing Canadians.
"I fear that this politicization of the pandemic risks undermining the public's trust in our public health institutions. This is not a risk we ought to be taking lightly," he said. He called on those who were still protesting in downtown Ottawa, but added he has "enough respect for my fellow Canadians not to engage in these easy and absurd labels."
Despite the concerns, however, he said he has no plans to leave the Liberal party.

Absolute turning point. In 1½ weeks, the trucker convoy effectively got rid of Erin O'Toole; created an emergency debate in Parliament; and made one Liberal MP (from Quebec!) to speak out (for others, too).
And so far 2 provinces drop mandates and Quebec rescind on thier vax tax threat
AND costing Canadians and Americans millions in food wastage, disruption of the economy resulting irreversible damage, harassing and attacking fellow Canadians, and beginning to turn a civilized society into pre-historic barbarianism. Good job.

I'm gonna do the same and email him my gratitude. I had to flee Canada a few months ago before the travel restrictions were put in place to be free because my mental and physical health was suffering and there's no support available. I am overcome with emotion and in tears right now listening to this in a public place. As a conservative, I honestly never thought I would see someone stand up to Trudeau
I'm not a liberal by any means but I do appreciate the fact that there are some within the party that actually do some research and voice their findings without joining in the dangerous rhetoric of the pm.

Are you saying you like seeing swastikas and Confederate flags in front of our Capitol building? You will notice that he very clearly denounced those who tar everyone with the same brush; he specifically denounced the way some were protesting, the very uncanadian messages sent by some, and things like personal threats. At the same time I felt he gave a good voice to some of the legitimate concerns people have. The political climate is very polarized right now, and personally I'm happy to see someone who is willing to talk about some of the nuances in our current situation. I wish more people could employ critical thinking skills rather than thinking purely from an emotional perspective. This goes for people and politicians in both extremes.

Not a Liberal by any stretch of the imagination but I can respect a man who is brave enough to stand on his own when he knows he is right. What he said and did took guts and he very eloquently shared what so many Canadians are feeling right now. Bravo!

Thanks for speaking up finally. Although I find it sad and disturbing that many MPs were contacted by many people who shared their heartbreaking stories and yet no action was taken by any MP. Even though MPs should represent people. It took the Freedom Convoy to make finally some of MPs to stand up and speak up. The policies should always be focused on a bigger picture, assessing various factors and be made for the betterment of society. These policies should never abuse the constitutional rights of Canadians.

I applaud this Liberal MP for having the backbone to speak out and be heard, and most importantly for listening to and respecting the concerns of Canadians from all walks of life. He went on to say that he will not engage in name calling. I lean conservative and I agree with him. My 21 years in uniform may have taught me tolerance but I'm still sorely lacking tolerance when it comes to radical and extreme views no matter what side they're on.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Joel for having courage to speak up and try to find pathways to end the toxic polarization of Canadians. I might not agree with every Canadians opinion but I do think each persons sovereignty of choice and opinion should be respected. What Joel has done as a public figure today has shown both vulnerability and great strength.

"Kids in windowless rooms, let that sink in" that is exactly the kind of thing that's gone on and why I just got back from Ottawa and will continue to return until our children are safe from such insanity, there are many children in Ottawa currently, they are now watching the police take the drivers fuel then arrest someone for having it, children ask "why?" And the answer as disturbing as the windowless rooms.
I should also add, they are also threatening to take the kids from their parents in Ottawa. That's a great idea isn't it? This thing is fixed around the entire country in 10 minutes, remove the use of prejudice and segregation and it's over! It's that simple and yet justin cant figure that out. The majority of Canadians are all for removing these mandates on shots whether they have them or do not. I applaud you for stepping up and speaking, I don't agree with 100% of what you said but I could easily negotiate a middle ground with you if it came down to it. I do not have shots and had the virus, I take vitamin C and D was sick 3 days with a couple residual days of blah. I'm 52. I was responsible and stayed home until I was better and even added another 5 days. I'm not the only one I know that has a similar story, I have friends that have shots and friends that don't. Our relationship hasn't changed whatsoever because of our choices. It should be just that a choice. I can't go to a restaurant for dinner, yet my immune system probably better than most having had the virus.
