  • Performed by Judy on 'The Judy Garland Show,' taped October 11, 1963 & February 23, 1964. There are only 2 known performances of Judy singing this beautiful Jazz song ... Both from her show ... This is one of them. A rare, sublime rendition of a song that many have sung ... but few have felt as Judy did.
'When Your Lover Has Gone' broadens our experience with knowing the spectrum of Judy's musical genius. Historically, she has not been associated or recognized with this genre of music ... I think that's changing ... And this song, among others, gives us reason ...
Words and music by Einer Swan, 1931.
What good is the scheming, the planning and dreaming
That comes with each new love affair
The dreams that we cherish, so often might perish
And leaves you with castles in air
    Judy sings:
When you're alone, who cares for starlit skies
When you're alone, the magic moonlight dies
At break of dawn, there is no sunrise
    When your lover has gone
What lonely hours, the evening shadows bring
What lonely hours, with memories lingering
Like faded flowers, life can't mean anything
    When your lover has gone

I LOVE this beautiful song! "When Your Lover Has Gone" is a favorite of mines and Judy Garland is divine with this song, expressing every bit of emotion that the song requires. Also the musical arrangement is soft, tender, and heart moving. Excellent performance by Judy Garland.

Thanks for posting this. Most people prefer Judy's full orchestra version of this song. And although I agree that version is stunning to watch as Judy goes through a rollercoaster of emotions (and a few vocal sommersaults), it's this quiet, gentle version that tugs at my heart....

Judy's rendition of this song in episode 24 almost reaches operatic proportions and she did it in her own inimitable way but this version is just a little more poignant in my books. So glad this version was posted. Thank you.

Christian Tassin.

I agree there is a resemblance in the their 'philosophy' of singing if that's not too grand a term. Both of these ladies had the hihest respect for their audience, amounting almost to love. Another singer I would include into this group is Elis Regina.

and yet that is exactly why it is moving, she is singing a song about a woman who has for her, nothing left to live for. like her at the time. I love this because of its dark undertones

There seems to be no option to save to a playlist.

@BuzzStephens1 The music in this version is Judy's voice ... a lovely instrument ... & the reason I shared it rather than any other. SMILE.

Such a sad rendition. You can see she is almost ready to die, and in this condition she did one of the best works in pop history. Van Gogh is getting into my mind.

One wonders if this was inspired by Julie London's version

If you mean the other versions don’t matter to you, that’s entirely your call. If you mean they don’t matter, period, that’s ridiculous. Some perfectly reasonable people prefer Louis Armstrong’s version, or Ray Charles’s, or Sinatra’s.

Francis could sing the blues. It's a shame she didn't sing more.

This is Garland at her absolute worst: all the empty mannerisms, no communication. She looks as if she's sight reading it for the very first time. .
