Could an old laptop for guitar amp sims and ez drummer be mixed with analog and use an iPad with other apps all be used together?a hybrid set up analog, windows,Apple all living together. 🧐🤷♂️
Yeah, I think that is the way to go, Timothy. I saw an interview with Spoon in which they talked about using some digital plugins because they thought they sounded cool. I'm not sure if they record strictly analog but it seemed like a great idea, running sounds out to a computer, with the availability of digital plugins and effects, especially for gear that might be hard to get a hold of otherwise. @@424Recording iPad apps are so much less and sound soon good these day, amazing actually for the price. My big problem is I’m lazy and addicted to channels like yours🤣🤣👍🙏
very good, I have a similar setup, but I'm not able to use the preamp, can you please tell me how you routed the signal? Are you using aux1? I appreciate if you can help me...
It was a choice between the Model16 and the DP24sd. The Model16 won because the simple fact that all your value settings for the mixer channel on the DP24 (eq,pan and routings) are not visible at first glance, you would have to check the tiny screen with the jog wheel and somehow roughly remember the settings you done with your multifunctional faders in some way as you progressing on your recording, or flip through the screen for lots of check ups. It also has only 8 analogue preamps with only one dedictaed HiZ,and limited options to hook your precious outboard gear to the console. The advantage for the DP is that you theoretically have a fair chance of recalling a song and their mix position if you want to get on with another project and return to continue working of the unfinished song before, something that is near impossible without taking pictures of the Model 16 consoles fader and knob position...but... to finish a song before you start on another is not always bad. And oh....The Model 16 is MUCH prettier LOL.

Awesome setup and kinda similar to mine lol. Having a drum pad is awesome, for a long time I recorded drums by playing on keyboard but pads stuff with real drumsticks is just so much more fun. I have the Yamaha DTXM12 with some Alesis kick pad and now I can record cool drum track quickly that also sounds much more natural
That's exactly what I wanted to do, wiencheck, physically hit the pads and have a kick pedal. I gotta say it's been an amazing change of pace so far. And way more natural sounding like you said!
like your setup. i am currently trying to learn a mini mac / reaper / behringer x air set up to replace my roland 2480, not fun. i still have songs on 4 track. i have at times bussed all four tracks from my tascam to the roland and been happy with the results play on
Thanks, richard. Good luck with the new tech. It sounds like we're going in opposite directions. I think I'll focus mostly on the 424 and run the final songs out to the 12, similar to what it sounds like you've done with the Roland
Hi Freddy I made this video on the Nord: ua-cam.com/video/KSQ7K7eOwew/v-deo.html I'd say around 3K? A lot of this stuff was acquired used over the years and even some of it people gave to me
Do you use midi in model 12 ? Do you sync it to Digitakt or do you just press play on digitakt syncing by ear to click track from model 12 ? Or do you do it all by ear ? Cheers
Hi ! I'm going dawless too and I'm very curious about the Nord Drum Pad : how do you set it up and make it work without daw ? I intend to purchase one and use it with my Korg D3200 recording studio (mixer/multitrack recorder)
Cool! Your gadgets are really great! Sometimes doing it on the actual instrument is still great, not saying that going digital is not good, but when you're used to play it on the actual instruments then it's really a different thing. :)
Hi Boone, due to the limited amount of tracks, if you have two mixers, you can make a stereo mix of multiple channels to be recorded on one of the Tascams. In this setup, I've got Digitakt, Minitaur, and Nord 3p hooked up to the 424. I can send a stereo mix out from the 424 to the 12, effectively summing 5 channels to 2. You can squeeze more channels onto less by submixing like this
i've been thinking about using of this kind of setup, but not because making music on the computer sucks or anything...its incredible what can be done with just a DAW... I just get heavily distracted with an internet connection. Still, I'll most likely end of with a mix of both lol
Yeah, I think 2022 will result in a hybrid setup for me. And yeah, the Internet can be a big time sink. I try to only log on at certain times and only for a few minutes here and there!
Hey, thanks a lot, Roy. I appreciate that. I made a video a couple years ago. It should answer the cassette question for you: ua-cam.com/video/FM3FryHyjmY/v-deo.html
Would you have already guessed by now I would have put a VCR there to replace the cassette deck (if both used for the same purpose), judging by the few comments I made about it?
How is the sound quality of the model 12 vs the 424? I’ve been conjurings way to expand tracks on the 424 Bc I enjoy the tape sound so much. Currently looking at acquiring an analog sub mixer(like an M-208/216/308) to hook up to the 424 and bouncing tracks into a DAW. (freeing up more tape tracks to be later bounced into a DAW for syncing) I haven’t fully acquired all the gear just yet. Is the tape sound still worth the effort? Or should I cut and just go for the model 12? Thanks!
That's a tough question. The sound of the 424 is definitely a unique sound but the machines have gotten out of control in terms of the price. I'd be tempted to recommend going with a 12/16/24 tbh. Unless the sound of the cassette is what you're looking for, it'd be easier to grab and use a 12 and see if you like it. You could always try one out and see if it works for you. It might be harder to do that with the 424 depending on the seller
Thanks, TAU! It's a big learning curve and daunting in a lot of ways. But I guess that's how you get better, with challenging yourself and working outside your comfort zone. Thanks for asking! Cheers!
@@424Recording Thats awesome to hear. Yeah it can be daunting at first but the more you go at it you can build something pretty nice. Like I said last time, let me know if you need any ideas, I'll gladly help out :)
I went from 424 cassette recording, to mixing into a 2 channel zoom recorder, then to ableton and a focusrite 18i20. Just to end up trading it in today for a tascam model 12. I miss the on the fly capturing. Are you going to miss the ableton/daw features and will you still master inside a daw? What do you think of the model 12 bit rate and Hertz? Is it of any noticable lesser quality?
It sounds like you've gone full circle. Tbh, I think the main features I'll miss are more composition based; the DAW has always been a great tool for that. Also, some of the plugins, perhaps, but I could always run some tracks outboard. I have a feeling by 2022, I'll have some sort of hybrid setup, but I'm also hoping to get away from the computer and screens a bit. I think that the bit rate/bit depth sounds great but I've never recorded beyond the max of the Model 12 (24/48) in a DAW. I think the biggest difference is the sound of the preamps but coming from a UA unit, which have the best out there, it's to be expected I guess. Good luck on your DAWless adventures!
@@424Recording I'm glad I won't be losing audio quality. Weird going from high biased good cassettes to an h8 zoom blew me away sound wise and now I'm worrying about tiny sound detail. I won't be completely dawless. I'll still probably buy a cheaper multi audio interface just so I have it. It's nice to have many ways to record. Cassette, Into my mpc, into a mixer, through the mixer into ableton, etc. Having a variety is nice.
Question : Is there a smart way for jumping around the timeline in a project ? If I wanted to rewind the entire arrangement in increments of 5,10 or 20 seconds for listening and recording...Is that possible ?
Hi, William, I want to play some on the Nord and sequence others on the Digitakt. A big reason I decided to get the Nord was so I could 'play' drums; unfortunately, I can't rock out with a live kit at my apartment
@@424Recording I have a 424 mkiii and a Model 12. A bit of rack mount reverb. Also using a mix of small semi-modular synths, one bigger one (Hydrasynth), one groovebox, and a 4-row Eurorack.
I'll have to get back to you on this! I might do the final mix down to tape. I'll probably check every time to see what the saturation sounds like for each instrument
@@WAZA___ it's a completely different work flow. If u use a DAW chances are you know very little about sound design in production, a lot of what this guy does is colouring sounds, resynthesis, and all the old school ways of processing, but most importantly monitoring. I'm sure if you understood how all the equipment worked , you'd maybe have a different opinion. DAWs certainly kill a lot less time for a beginner, but in the end, everyone adjusts to their setup.
Is there any way to know what the difference is between the Tube MP Studio (not V3) with vu meter, and the plain MP which you show here with no VU meter? I ask because my Studio MP was 49$ while the plain MP is 95$ even tho it has no meter. Just want to know if mine is in fact a cheaper quality version (even tho the Studio V3 is 119$) !!!
Hey bun I wrote a bit about the song on my website if you want to check it out: 424recording.com/be-cool-cowboy-bumbler The SPX90 is a reverb unit from the 80's. It has a slew of digital effects but the big one is the reverse reverb setting on guitar
Hey, I am working my set up around my tascam 488 and wondering if placing my monitors on each side of it (about 6-8 inches apart from the unit on each side) could potentially mess up the the tape heads somehow (magnetically?). I see your 424 up there in this video is fairly close to your monitors too. Do you know anything about this? Maybe I’m trippin’.. if you got any info I would appreciate it!!
I've actually stood the monitors up upright since this video thanks to people commenting about it. I guess these weren't designed to be placed sideways, so that might be something to keep in mind about yours. In terms of the magnetism, that thought has crossed my mind. So far, I can't report any changes or issues and everything has been sounding great. I think it's a good thing to consider. I'm sure it could effect the magnetism but I guess it depends how close everything is
Mike- May I ask a question. My Tascam Porta 02 1/4 inch inputs will only accept line level at a maximum. Anything hotter will burn it up, so I’ve always mic’d my amp and run the microphone into the inputs. I’d like to record direct. Can you recommend a DI box that will take the instrument level of my guitar and put it into a line level, so I can record direct in? Hopefully a cheaper one. Thanks!
True but if you’re 15 not best way to start! Possibly never know, that said it’s totally possible that you can do it but learning piano and lessons not a lot but enough. Can’t sight read but slowly coming along. Learned how to overlap vocals and old fashioned way of music. Point editing and mastering and some stuff would be very good for DAW but young kids end up not mastering anything and then they don’t know what to do everything I have is digital they can call it analog but it is a digital signal . So unless you’re a DJ but if you’re a true musician get great while you’re young because once you’re old all the stuff is gonna do is break your heart when you figure out he can’t play or sing or do anything just a l 2:40 esson I learned a long time ago
I'm not sure. It actually is a drum synth and dynamically creates the sounds as opposed to playing back prerecorded samples. So I would think that any drum machine that uses synthesized sounds could be synthesized on the Nord. Tbh I'm very new to it but this was a big selling point for me vs other electronic drums out there
how are you connecting your monitors? I'm trying to hookup my monitors and subwoofer and I can't get any sound out when plug in the 'Main Out' and 'Sub Out'. I've read the manual, and still nothing. Please help
It depends what your goals are. If you want to share your music online, and just want a stereo mix/master WAV, you'll need any two channel standalone recorder. It might also be easier to use a computer, since the MX-1 syncs with Ableton
I am so happy this channel exists

Called symphonic...the delay on it is really good too and the reverb ain’t half bad..love my spx
Toda i recorded my instrumentals on the 424
I make Them on my Software Controller and everytime if worked with the 424 you helped Alot.
I remember buying a magazine called computermusic long ago. It had a free vst synth called atom. I had no idea what I was doing so I dug in. I purchased a program called micro logic and I was on my way with a digital computer set up. Never thought I would ever think of taking all my analog gear out again. I have a question I have been wondering about.
Hybrid 2022
@@424Recording iPad apps are so much less and sound soon good these day, amazing actually for the price. My big problem is I’m lazy and addicted to channels like yours🤣🤣👍🙏
The HS series monitors aren't designed to be laid on their side. If you find things aren't sounding right place them vertically.
Thanks, Curtis. I did not know that. I'll have to try them vertically. Cheers
also own the Nord Drum 3p; wonderful!
Awesome, Roy! I've really been enjoying it! I haven't dived too deep into creating my own sounds yet. How have you been using it?
How do you mix and master what was recorded?
Fan - bloody- tastic!
Thanks, Rob!
very good, I have a similar setup, but I'm not able to use the preamp, can you please tell me how you routed the signal? Are you using aux1? I appreciate if you can help me...
Looks tight my friend!
Thanks, Ira!
I love that DAWless life - F-- a Ableton
Ableton rocks bub
It rocked my world for 12 yeArs bro - I am the most advanced Ableton user on earth- former major sample. Library kit designer 👩🎨- ... once you have sex dawless, you don’t go back
Awesome setup and kinda similar to mine lol.
Love this good job!
Thanks for watching, bill!
like your setup. i am currently trying to learn a mini mac / reaper / behringer x air set up to replace my roland 2480, not fun. i still have songs on 4 track. i have at times bussed all four tracks from my tascam to the roland and been happy with the results play on
Thanks, richard. Good luck with the new tech. It sounds like we're going in opposite directions. I think I'll focus mostly on the 424 and run the final songs out to the 12, similar to what it sounds like you've done with the Roland
awesome setup!
Thanks!
damn dawg you legit now ! i totally need to go DAWLESS ! but i have to go to strabucks first
Thanks, petey! Do it up! Enjoy your coffee!
i like that nord drum 3 yes do a video please , question around how much for all your toys ?
Hi Freddy I made this video on the Nord: ua-cam.com/video/KSQ7K7eOwew/v-deo.html I'd say around 3K? A lot of this stuff was acquired used over the years and even some of it people gave to me
Do you use midi in model 12 ? Do you sync it to Digitakt or do you just press play on digitakt syncing by ear to click track from model 12 ? Or do you do it all by ear ?
Cheers
Great advice and ideas! Thanks!
Thanks for watching, Jeff!
Bro. you should upgrade to the Tascam 488mk2 8track recorder 👌
Get a used Roland VS-2480. They are the most feature capable, all in one recorders ever made.
I'll check them out! Thanks for the tip, John!
Very true! There's something about the tactile nature of hardware for sure
What’s the benefit of using two tascams? ‘Submixing” Thanks for video
You can squeeze more channels onto less by submixing like this
Does the Tascam Model 12 Sound as warm as your Portastudio?
I came here after trying all day to integrate the Model 12 to my DAW. I almost lost my mind.
I think Tascam USA might have a video about it that could help
DAWless for the win
i've been thinking about using of this kind of setup, but not because making music on the computer sucks or anything...its incredible what can be done with just a DAW... I just get heavily distracted with an internet connection. Still, I'll most likely end of with a mix of both lol
Yeah, I think 2022 will result in a hybrid setup for me. And yeah, the Internet can be a big time sink. I try to only log on at certain times and only for a few minutes here and there!
love your videos very much, thanks a lot; but why record to a cassette?
Hey, thanks a lot, Roy. I appreciate that. I made a video a couple years ago. It should answer the cassette question for you: ua-cam.com/video/FM3FryHyjmY/v-deo.html
I do not use a computer in my studio,
Never have.
I run everything into my Tascam portastudio and our into my final mastering equipment, works great
Nice, Robert! That's where I'm headed I think. Cheers and happy recording!
Nice setup, looks decent.
Thanks, George! Hopefully, I can make some cool stuff with it. Cheers
@@424Recording Looking forward to hearing it!
Would you have already guessed by now I would have put a VCR there to replace the cassette deck (if both used for the same purpose), judging by the few comments I made about it?
Do it up!
@@424Recording Is that a good thing or bad thing? I have no way of changing your setup in case that's what it means.
Looking sharp
What do you plug your pedal board into?
Awesome stuff! How are you doing with electronic music?
If I wanted to rewind the entire arrangement in increments of 5,10 or 20 seconds for listening and recording...Is that possible ?
can you do a video of the autotune on the pv10.....like use it to max retune on a good beat.....really wanna hear how it sounds.
Hi andy, sorry but I do not have a pv10
Cool nord drums!!! #nordnerd
Are you gonna be tracking drum machines exclusively, or some live kit as well?
Hi, William, I want to play some on the Nord and sequence others on the Digitakt. A big reason I decided to get the Nord was so I could 'play' drums; unfortunately, I can't rock out with a live kit at my apartment
@@424Recording Excited about using those cool Nord Drums too but need help ! How do you connect them to your setup ?
Definitely fun to see several major similarities between your setup and mine. But that has a lot to do with why I am a viewer!
What are you using, Tracy?
@@424Recording I have a 424 mkiii and a Model 12. A bit of rack mount reverb. Also using a mix of small semi-modular synths, one bigger one (Hydrasynth), one groovebox, and a 4-row Eurorack.
Actually I have the mkII. Forgetting the model number is a sign that I haven’t been using it enough.
Dang, that sounds like a cool setup!
What percentage of the time are you recording to tape vs running things through the Portastudio pre amps for saturation? Thanks!
I'll have to get back to you on this! I might do the final mix down to tape. I'll probably check every time to see what the saturation sounds like for each instrument
Do you do Clint Eastwood voiceovers? You had me fooled! Good vid.
Thanks for watching! Yeah! Clint actually kicks me any he doesn't feel like doing
I adaw your setup LOOOOL
I am completely confused with this set up. I think I'll stick with the DAWs.
Me too... don't see the point in all this.
@@ehvmixedit You are correct OLD SCHOOL WAYS
Is there any way to know what the difference is between the Tube MP Studio (not V3) with vu meter, and the plain MP which you show here with no VU meter? I ask because my Studio MP was 49$ while the plain MP is 95$ even tho it has no meter. Just want to know if mine is in fact a cheaper quality version (even tho the Studio V3 is 119$) !!!
What does the yamaha spx 90 II do? You said you use it for bumbler? Was just wandering how you use it.
Hey bun I wrote a bit about the song on my website if you want to check it out: 424recording.com/be-cool-cowboy-bumbler The SPX90 is a reverb unit from the 80's. It has a slew of digital effects but the big one is the reverse reverb setting on guitar
@@424Recording Oh! cool. sounds interesting, i'll check it out thanks. I love reverb pedals.
Amazing !!!!
Sweet!!!
Thanks, Mike!
I'm sure it could effect the magnetism but I guess it depends how close everything is
Dope!
Thanks!
Thanks!
ART Tube MP should do the trick. Just watch the gain staging and I think that would be a good solution
@@424Recording Thanks so much!
If you don't mind me asking..why no DAW?
I work on a computer all day. I don't want to work on one all night, too
DAW = Life
True but if you’re 15 not best way to start!
How many classic drum machines does the Norddrum have samples from?
I'm not sure. It actually is a drum synth and dynamically creates the sounds as opposed to playing back prerecorded samples. So I would think that any drum machine that uses synthesized sounds could be synthesized on the Nord. Tbh I'm very new to it but this was a big selling point for me vs other electronic drums out there
Nice!!👌👌
Thanks ✌️
Can I use the Tascam Porta02 with the Model 12? To buy more tracks for the Porta
You could integrate them somehow for sure
how are you connecting your monitors? I'm trying to hookup my monitors and subwoofer and I can't get any sound out when plug in the 'Main Out' and 'Sub Out'. I've read the manual, and still nothing. Please help
Do you have the buttons pressed in for each channel?
In your dawless setups, what do you use to record audio?
424 or Model 12
@@424Recording Thanks. In my case I use the MX-1 Roland, what do you suggest?
It depends what your goals are. If you want to share your music online, and just want a stereo mix/master WAV, you'll need any two channel standalone recorder. It might also be easier to use a computer, since the MX-1 syncs with Ableton
Y'all should use Luna by UA
Maybe next year!
