I get what he’s trying to say by comparing Dwight Howard to Russell because Dwight Howard has always had a relaxed not intense personality but Dwight had a really good NBA career so the comparison doesn’t really work. He should have used Andrew Bynum or Kwame Brown as a comparison to Russell.

In this man's defense he had a number of real problems in his life he wasn't dealing with and didn't have the same support structure he needed to cope with the things he was very much dealing with. But as already stated no matter the circumstances, he still had a choice.

Evan Martin I know he's had some very debilitating circumstances along the way and that's completely understandable, but he's one of many who share similar experiences. The Raiders paid him a shit ton of money under the contingency that he abide by some very, very simple things like staying under 265lbs, sleeping a certain number of hours over the 2 days leading into a game, staying awake in meetings, and doing just a little bit of homework each night to prepare for Sunday. If he had a problem, then I have no issue with him not being able to live that life effectively. He decided to wait a few years before throwing everyone else under the bus instead of just saying, "Hey, I fucked up. I learned from that, and I'm better now because of it."
Al Davis was the only one willing to spend a top-10 pick on him regardless of how many other teams said they wouldn't risk it. From what I know, almost everybody aside from Al wanted Calvin Johnson because Moss had just been traded, and I honestly think that's a courageous decision to tell someone you believe in them when no one else did. JaMarcus then proceeded to hold out for a ridiculous contract because he thought he was the best. He was so enamored with his ability to throw a ball 60 yards on his knees and scouts were dropping jaws when he threw a ball 80 yards at his pro day. He came into the league at the right time, because there's now like 6 QBs who throw 80+. The whole situation is just baffling to me. I still wouldn't blame him for any of it since he legitimately need help.

To be completely fair, Russell claimed he had narcolepsy, which, if true, would explain a lot of his lack of focus. Still, if he could overcome that to star in college, he could have at least tried hard to do the same in the NFL.
